Would love to have tried the food, but we were not seated for dinner because we did not have a reservation. We let them know we did not know a party of two needed a reservation at 5:30 pm. We were told no reservation was needed but they were very busy. Looking around at all the empty tables, my wife and I left unconvinced, surprised and hungry. We've been a few times and really love it. At one visit, they had made a mistake and taken our reservation when the restaurant was booked for a wedding. Our meal celebrating a birthday at Reata was absolutely excellent! We arrived when Reata first opened at 5 pm. The staff were helpful as we arrived early, escorting to the bar to await our table. The atmosphere is true Texas! Even as the restaurant filled up, it remained reasonably quiet and we had no problem conversing. Our server Julia, was truly above and beyond she was busy, yet was attentive and provided wonderfully personal service. The onion ring appetizer was the best we'd ever had. Both entree's - steak/Caesar salad and chicken fried chicken were cooked perfectly and delicious! The chocolate cake rounded out my birthday meal beautifully. We're from the Austin area with many fine restaurants to choose from and Reata exceeded those in quality of service, pricing and food. We came to Alpine for my BDay as I was born in Marfa and raised in Alpine. My Dad was stationed at the Marfa Army Airfield. My parents were from Ohio but fell in love with the Big Bend and moved back after WW II. We are so pleased we selected Reata for my birthday celebration. We were a party of six that came first through the doors at opening. Service started well. Drinks and appetizers came out in a reasonable time. Then service nosedive. Drinks were taken care of but mains didn't come out for over an hour. Other tables were served during this time. Two of our party decided to get it for take out and the rest of us canceled. The manager came by and comped the two who wished for take out but nothing else. At least the appetizers were good. tldr we got appetizers but not our entrees. Manager handled this poorly. read more

A great find in a small town. The food was excellent and so was the service. Now every time I travel out this way I will eat here. There is a bar next door that has live music and good drinks. Perfect if you have to wait for a table and need to kill some time. This place gets packed and rightly so. The steaks tasted amazing. They have a nice bar area too. This was one of the few restaurants in walking distance of the hotel we were staying and, for some reason, most other places were closed on Tuesdays. Also, the reviews were pretty good. We were quickly seated and looking forward to a cold drink and food after visiting Big Ben. We ordered drinks and began looking at the menu. I am a firm believer that all appetizers should not be more than $10. This place's prices were all over the place. Most of the appetizers were the price of an entree. And the most shocking was that they charged more for their signature dishes. One signature dish was $10 more than all other main dishes. Seriously, who does that? Unfortunately, it was the dish we wanted as my husband was craving Mexican food. Needless to say, we ordered two appetizers to share amongst four adults. We were tempted to walk out but after a long day of driving and sightseeing, we improvised. I will say the bacon wrapped crab stuffed jalapenos and chicken nachos were pretty good. And having a couple of local brews from Big Bend Brewing was a plus. This place leans more so to three dollar signs. The service and atmosphere were decent. We hadn't been here for years but wanted to try it again as we had good memories. We had lunch as the dinner reservations were all too late. Special note - you need a reservation at of the time so call in advance. We started with tenderloin tamales and onion rings. Both were wonderful and could be shared by three or more easily. The tamales are tenderloin with just the right amount of masa. Rings are super crispy and in a chicken fried batter. I opted for cream gravy instead of the ketchup. For the main we had the CF burger and the tenderloin and enchilada. The burger is local beef and perfectly grilled your way. The hand cut fries are a bit greasy but expected given that they make them here. The tenderloin and enchilada is a Reata classic and a wonderful combination. The tenderloin cut with a fork. Service is fast and friendly and prices are mid range to high but worth it for a treat or special occasion. The eating area is small so small kids may not fit in. read more

While I love to decor and the service I've had was pretty good. The food has gone downhill in the last few years. Once we went for an anniversary- we started with the app (terrible). Sent it back and paid our bill- left. Next time with a group. A few orders were just wrong and the last dish came out when almost everyone was done. The best Alpine has to offer, although not open on Sundays. The restaurant itself is a quaint converted house that opens up to a dining room with ample seating. Walk further back and you are greeted by friendly staff who are ready to take your order and serve you your favorite adult beverage. Feeling like eating alfresco? semi-shaded tables are available out back. When talking about the menu, the small menu is printed (no-frills) on a sheet of white paper. Meals are hearty and you will not feel like you got ripped off. Now with that said, this is not cheap food $$$, but if want something easier on your pocketbook, there are other options in this little town. The atmosphere is not fussy, but certainly okay for a business meeting power lunch. Now I have read other reviews about the cocktails missing the point, but if you are going to this restaurant for cocktails, you're kinda missing the point. if you have a larger party, it is probably a good idea to make a restaurant. read more

Cold day, riding around sightseeing. Great Yelp reviews, so this was our lunch stop. Neat decor, very Texas. Menu had so many items we wanted to try! We opted for the lunch special, grilled cheese(Swiss and cheddar), spinach, bacon, and tomato on sourdough, with a side of sweet potato fries. All delicious! We also shared a chicken tortilla soup. The waiter poured the chicken broth table side over the chicken, tortillas, avacado, cheese jalapeños and cilantro. Wow! Great. Portions were big- we took half with us. Came to this restaurant after a long day at Big Bend. Although receiving food was slow, it was worth the wait. I ordered the citrus chicken with honey mustard and that was wonderful! We went to dinner at the Reata. Upscale eatery in downtown Alpine, TX. The Reata was recommended by the folks at the hotel and it's kitchen stays open until 10:00pm. Perfect for our late evening arrival in town. Western themed, based on the movie "Giant". We were seated in the front room. Started by the owner of the CF Ranch, a "hungry west Texas rancher hankerin' for some really great food". They also have a newer location in Fort Worth. Nice selection of brews on tap, a good drink and wine menu. We order the CF Burger, the Chile Relleno and Jalapeño grits on the side. Great burger. The Relleno was huge, stuffed with a quest cheese, creamy and sweet. The Relleno had an almost chicken fried steak like coating. Crunchy and tasty. The Relleno came with 2 bacon wrapped crab filled jalapeño. Yum! A great food destination in the Big Bend area. read more

My family and I have come here fairly regularly for a long time. Overall, we've been pleased with it. Tonight I ordered a hamburger and made sure to ask for no cheese as I'm lactose intolerant. The first time it came out, it had cheese on it. I don't mind a mistake and I understand that kind of thing. I reminded the server that I asked for no cheese. My wife mentioned that I was lactose intolerant to explain that I could not eat the one they initially served me. After a couple of minutes, the server returned. I lifted off the bread and they had tried to scrape the cheese off of the previous burger. The meat was still covered with a layer of cheese and they had flipped that side face down. I also noticed that the cheese had melted into the bread and that was still there. After pointing out that they'd just flipped it over and served the same burger they offered to make it again. At that point, I was honestly too annoyed to mess with that place any more. Having worked in food service, my wife and I are pretty forgiving of mistakes, but this was an attempt to serve me food they knew would make me sick. At no time did a manager come by and address the problem. I didn't mention the lactose intolerance when I ordered but did make it clear that I did not want cheese. On the second round, my wife did mention that I couldn't have cheese due to being lactose intolerant. There aren't a lot of options for food in Alpine, but I'd encourage you to go somewhere else. read more

I come to Alpine once a year and I've tried Reata 3 times. First time I had a ribeye it was undercooked and no flavor. Second time I ate at Reata the rib eye was cooked to my liking and was seasoned well with good taste. This 3rd time I ate at Reata the ribeye was over cooked and had no flavor no seasoning was used. For the prices they charge for the ribeye I believe they should make certain the chef can cook it to order and season for taste. I know for future visits I will not be ordering my steaks at Reata, the quality in how the meat is prepared is not worth the premium price they charge. They do serve other food items other than steaks and if I decide to try Reata again I will try something else but 2 out 3 times having a poor tasting steak I do not recommend the steaks . read more

Very nice place for a small town in West Texas. I think what we ordered was not the best the kitchen had to offer and was only "good" but not great. I would go back, but order different things. 1. Bacon-wrapped grilled asparagus served on a bed of creamy cheese grits was the best thing we had by a mile. It is a side dish, but we asked for it as an appetizer. In every way it was out-of-this-world good. Bacon and asparagus were perfectly grilled. I probably could have eaten an entire bowl full of those grits. OMG. A+. 2. Wife ordered a grilled chicken breast with a tomato blue cheese topping. The chicken was a tad overdone (execution mistake) and the blue cheese kind of dominated the flavor, to the detriment of the overall effect. Order only if you adore blue cheese. C+. 3. I ordered the cheese stuffed chile relleno with 2 bacon-wrapped crab-stuffed jalapenos. The poblano was large, perfectly breaded and fried, but the cheese stuffing was too rich and there was too much of it. I scraped out about half of the cheese to finish the chile. I would recommend re-thinking the stuffing on this dish. Less cheese and a more complex stuffing (carnitas?) would have made this a fantastic dish. The bacon-wrapped jalapenos were great, although the stuffing seemed (again) to be a lot more cheese and a lot less crabmeat. The ranch-style beans served in place of the usual refried beans was a nice upgrade. B. Service was spot-on and the prices were reasonable for the quality. Margaritas were flavorful and refreshing, but a bit stingy with the tequila. Decor and comfort of the small dining room was nice. We saw some great looking steaks but neither of us were hungry enough to tackle one of them. Overall, Reata is very West Texas, minus the dust storm. So if you are going to eat here make a reservation but I can tell you when we called they said they only had a 5:00 or 7:30 available inside otherwise we would have to eat out in the patio area We come to the restaurant and we wait outside until they open about 5 minutes because they open at 5:00 When we are seated we see there are open tables which I think means they did have room because people came in without reservations The food was good but we had to send back a plate because it was cold This place is a toss up they are not about the customer they are about them Plus the bathroom door is hard to lock maybe because the restaurant is in a converted house Mash potatoes where cool but the chicken fried steak was hot, but the grilled chicken was rubber I would not recommend this place read more

4 visits, and each one gets worse. The waitstaff is lovely, service great but that's where it ends. Couldn't bring myself to go there for my birthday, because I'm bummed about how bad it has gotten. Almost everything is pre cooked and re heated.....nothing very fresh. That Ben E Keith truck is delivering a lot of pre prepared food. For the price, it just isn't worth it. I find it a bit arrogant too. Not many restaurants in Alpine, so ya stopped trying. How about cooking, sourcing some local game meat and trying something fresh and new? How about if I'm going to spend 100 plus on 2 people, I get something good? Guess your just going to sit back and scalp the tourists and locals who don't have much else to choose from. This place was very tasty, and I would gladly eat here again. We came in at 6pm on a Friday. Half the tables were empty, but since we didn't have a reservation, we had to sit in the bar area, which was full. No problem, someone sitting in the bar area didn't want to move to take their reservation, so we got their table in the main area. Reservations are fine, but when half the tables are empty...... Meh. We didn't have a reservation, so we ate at the bar. The bartender was friendly and attentive. We split the chef's special of the day--an 8oz ribeye with mashed potatoes & green beans, and added a wedge salad and the calamari. On the whole, nothing was seasoned well. It was like going to that friend's house whose parent cooks an extravagant meal, but nothing really well. The steak was cooked to the appropriate temperature, but had NO SEASONING. We ended up adding salt & pepper, but wished we had access to the kitchen's spices. The calamari was perfectly cooked, but, again, lacked salt (at minimum), and the cocktail sauce had an odd flavor to it. The wedge was a wedge, but they used Italian dressing with the blue cheese crumbles. It would've made more sense to use a blue cheese dressing. We ordered sparkling water--they give you a big bottle, so you can split it. That was nice. People are friendly and the service is good, but you need reservations or you sit bar side. The food is okay. If the kitchen can figure out how to season its food this restaurant will become a winner. Until then it's just meh. read more

We had such high hopes for this restaurant as the vibe and decor is really five star! However, the food failed us. The menu looked interesting and complex, but it's execution was a FAIL. My partner ordered the chicken fried steak as our waitress ( who was delightful) mentioned it was very popular. The dish came with mash potatoes and today with broccoli ( not exactly traditional Texas, but we were going with the flow). I ordered the cheese enchiladas with ranch beans and rice. We also ordered a side of jalapeño and cheese grits. Our dishes came out within an acceptable timeframe. Plating did not equate with "fine dining" or the price tag; Chicken fried steak was $26. The chicken fried steak had a ring of oil underneath and the breading had detached. It also came with a small amount of gravy on the steak. No gravy was on the side or on the potatoes due to the fact that they were partially under the chicken fried steak. We called over the waitress who agreed that the dish did not look typical although she told us that sometimes the breading falls off and is often soggy. Since another version of the same would not be better we decided to try something different - the burger, which we ordered to be cooked medium. Let's move onto the cheese enchilada entree. Again plating was messy; the enchiladas were clearly made earlier and reheated when ordered. The problem was that it was not reheated sufficiently as the cheese within the enchilada was still solid and not melted. The corn enchilada shell was dry with little sauce to rehydrate. The rice was spicy but overly salted. The ranch beans, were fine but nothing amazing. The additional side of jalapeño and cheese grits were very disappointing as the grits were very coarse, not creamy and very salty. It tasted more like a very moist piece of cornbread or cornbread dressing, not grits. The burger arrived. We cut the burger in half and noticed it was well done. The condiments were delivered in small containers that had been sitting around for a length of time as the mustard had a dried mustard skin on the top. Again we were disappointed. The fries were cold and inedible. My partner ate half of their burger and left the fries. I ate the rice, beans and took a bite out of each of the enchiladas. I did eat most of the small cup of grits (price tag of $8). As mentioned at the start of this review we really wanted to enjoy a meal at Reata's. We cannot recommend this restaurant. I would not return as the food was awful and expensive. I suppose they can get away with poor meal execution as this is a very small town primarily servicing guests to Big Bend National Park. The service was great but I am SO confused by the great reviews, I'm not sure a single thing was seasoned at all.
