Our meal was horrible. The chicken fried steak was thin, dried out and over cooked. No part of the breading stuck to the steak. I guess the kitchen ran out of mash potatoes because there was very very small portion. However, steam broccoli was on point. My girlfriend had the shrimp and grits. The bacon wrapped shrimp were good and cooked well. The grits were dried out and tasted like cardboard. We also had a spring greens salad and jalapeño mac and cheese. The kitchen was out of spring greens so they were replace them with spinach; however it worked. The salad was good. The mac and cheese was mediocre. We had an 8 o'clock reservation. We arrived early hoping to be sat. We were told that our table wasn't ready. That's understandable so we went next door and grabbed a drink. We went to Reata at 8:00 and were told that our table would be ready in 10 minutes. During the wait, another couple entered the restaurant, told the manager that they had an 8:00 reservation, and the couple were sat instantly. Mean while we continued to wait for our 8:00 table for 2. When our table became ready, the hostess told us "the table is ready, it's over there," pointed to it, and rushed off. Our server was very nice; no complaints about her. We did have interactions with, what I am assuming was, the manager. She was not a pleasant woman and not welcoming. Overall, there isn't a reason for us to go back. There's better food in the area. read more

If you are in Alpine this is the place to eat! The food was delicious and the place was full of locals, generally a good sign. I started with the chicken tortilla soup which was amazing and as close to authentic as I've ever seen inside the states. My main dish was the stuffed Chile rellenos that comes with stuffed jalapeños wrapped in bacon. Need I say more? I will anyways... the cheese that is in the rellenos is so rich and delicious, I struggled to finish but my taste buds couldn't get enough! I was happy to be able to enjoy a semi-local beer with my dinner. Cheese Enchilada plate: sauce is more of a sweet red mole sauce, not red chili sauce, it was a little too sweet for us. Heat level a little low, cheese was barely melted. Beans and rice served on plate. Beans would be better served in a cup. The rice was a plain rice pilaf with bits of asparagus. Tasty, but not the expected spanish rice, and only about 1/3 of a cup. A little chintzy for a rice side. Fortunately we were not too hungry. A few tortilla chips would be appreciated. The bread was very sweet and was ok on it's own as a dessert, but too sweet for bread. The servers were working their tails off. They were pleasant and helpful, but they need more help. The salmon,green beans and mashed potatoes famously done I also had the Moulton cake I think is what she called it as good as the dinner! Won! Der! Ful! The lady that waited on me one of the finest servers I've had wait on me in a long time she explained everything and made sure my glass was full very helpful, not enough stars for this restaurant or the server. Lunch at Reata was our first meal after arriving in West Texas. It's a nice restaurant - the decor (and the outside patio where we ate) has a lot of character. You feel like you're at an old steak house in Texas for sure. The lunch menu isn't thrilling. It's pretty classic: soups (tortilla, jalapeno and cilantro), salads, burgers, sandwiches, etc. My problem with the lunch menu is just how heavy everything is! (This was my brain: Tamales? Maybe! Oh, tenderloin tamales with pecan mash? For lunch? Nah.) Bacon wrapped crab stuffed jalapenos. Smoked quail with jalapeno cheddar grits and BBQ molasses glaze. Stopped in for drinks and came back for dinner. Staff very friendly and nice, attentive. Loved the Texan margaritas, just the tight amount of sweetness and blue. We have dined at the Fort Worth location, and noticed this original spot two years ago on a visit. It was as much a reason for our trip as anything else we did. We were not disappointed. Despite not being able to book a reservation ahead of time, we called to see if there was a cancellation, and we got it at 7:30pm on a Saturday night. Although we were early, we were seated within 5 minutes. We started with the tamale appetizer. I have to say that I expected a few mini-tamales. Instead, the dish comes with three full-sized tamales that are clearly hand made to perfection. They had just the right proportion of filling to masa. For adult beverages, I started off with an adult version of a Cherry Limeade while my girlfriend had the "Cowboy Cosmopolitan." Both were good, but the Limeade was by far the better! My girlfriend got the 14 oz ribeye with an extra side of the jalapeño bacon Mac & cheese. I ordered the Chile Rellenos with stuffed jalapeños. The ribeye was a perfect medium rare & the compound butter simply melted into the meat. The jalapeños are wrapped in bacon & filled with a crabmeat stuffing. They are not for the faint of heart. These puppies have some serious heat. My rellenos was definitely unique. The filling seemed to be similar to a Boursin. As they offer this on another item, I feel it may be right on the spot. The breading was light & crispy. The pepper was cooked through and quite delicate. Service was friendly and not over-bearing. She was very efficient throughout. The decor is Classic Cowboy, as is the FTW location. It is much smaller, and parking is a bit challenging for a small town. It wasn't bad, though. I seem to recall reading something about valet. Don't quote me. The food is amazing and well-worth every penny. I still want to try their calf fries, but have been asked not to do so. One day! Do not feel compelled to dress up like city folks here, even at these prices. Clearly, the restaurant is Cowboy-formal (Stetsons, pressed Wranglers, and real Cowboy boots are welcome - for the ladies, i do believe denim skirts & boots will do the trick). The have a place by the entrance to hang your ball cap if that is your style. As for those who feel some of the food under-seasoned or "under-whelming," this is a real steakhouse, not Saltgrass or some "road house" manifestation. read more

I had a wonderful dinner. I was new to to town and didn't realize that this place does take reservations. So for a Saturday night walk in I had to sit on the back patio. It was a beautiful patio and even though it was warm outside the temperature was great with the shade and the umbrellas. The food was on the gourmet side, I had a wonderful stuffed poblano, Some crab stuffed jalapeños wrapped in bacon and some asparagus. My food was excellent and my friends said they like their food as well. They were only two cons, and that is that the flies got really bad outside so much that we had to leave. And the rolls were really hard didn't feel fresh. But other than that I would recommend this restaurant and hope you enjoy your happy eating read more

There's no other place to consider eating than Reata in Alpine, Texas. It's the best in West Texas. The bread is out of this world. We had the tamale appetizer and then had the enchiladas, citrus chicken and steak tacos and weee blown away. We were even considering coming back to eat here on our way out of Big Bend. Reata is a must stop if you are within West Texas and within 100 miles of Alpine which includes stopping in if you're on your way to Big Bend National Park. Lots of ranch inspired design as the family who owns it also owns a ranch. We had the: Onion rings with Serrano ketchup Tenderloin Tamales with Pecan Mash Reata's Cheese Enchiladas Buttermilk pie crust pecan pie The onion rings were the best I've ever had. The tamales had ground/mashed pecans as a topping, I had been expecting that the tamales were served atop a pecan infused mashed potato (which now that I think of it would have been weird) Resta is famous for their cheese enchiladas. Our waiter recommended the cheese enchiladas on the carne asada as one of the best dishes but we weren't hungry enough for a steak this night. The warm pecan pie was incredible! We ate here when spending a night in Alpine prior to heading to big bend. We enjoyed the crab stuffed jalapenos. My husband enjoyed the salmon. I had the Caesar salad with steak and, although the steak was a bit too seasoned for my liking, my husband loved it. Veggies were fresh and good. We loved the pecan pie for desert. We made reservations for an early dinner and we were definitely not impressed. My wife ordered a pasta dish which was subpar for $27. It was very oily tasting. I've tasted better from grocery store microwave pasta. I had the $27 chicken fried steak which was extremely tough with cold bland gravy. The waitress got my wife's order wrong and also forgot about my drink refill, there was never an apology or an option given to correct the order issue. I'm usually pretty easy going about issues at restaurants but at these prices everything should be spot on. This was our first and last visit. read more

((((READ BEFORE DINING)))) This was our first time to dîne here. We recently moved to terlingua and were looking foward to dining here for quite sometime. The ambiance was nice as was the friendly server, that is as far as it went. Our wine glasses came out filthy as the wine droplets stuck to the side of the glass inside, the biscuits were delicious the first time the next round requested were dry and burnt. As we waited for our meal, the table beside us got calamari and the fishy smell was so bad it was in the air . That is not how fresh calamari smells and can't believe the guest were eating it. Finally our food came out and it was disastrous my wife's salmon was dry and overcooked her rice was cold and corn just average. My son ordered a pasta dish that was very bland and had no flavor I thought it was him but no I tasted it and it was horrid, the lady told us it was a white wine sauce which was inaccurate because you could not taste the reduced white wine no flavors of seasong just overcooked watery buttery noodles,FYI my boy loves white wine reduced pasta. Next my dish the asada with enchiladas was good but lacked sauce as my rice was cold as well and here's the big thing who and I mean who decided rice with ginger would be great on a Mexican dish it was inedible was just a very poor decision on the chefs behalf, the lady said they only make one rice of the day and that simply is inexcusable unless you're cooking at home for your own palate. We thought gringos food was bad but this place was right there with them. The owner needs to have a sit-down with the prep chef and executive chef about food temps , freshness of seafood, preparation and last cleanliness of wine glasses. Just look at there posted pics of the asada enchiladas every pic is different preperations , plating and crema on top which mine never had, inconsistent. If you find yourself and guest in Alpine do not be fooled by the stars on this establishment they are either from people that love bad calamari or locals that haven't been out and tasted what the world has to offer. One family came in and were told they were packed and let's just say as they walked out I talked to them and their children and said they were not missing out and three miles down the road there was a restaurant called Spicewood which supercedes Reata by leaps and bounds as I tell this to anyone reading this. Even Sazzon has better quality food and I feel there service is not that great but would dîne there because their great menu and tres leches cake(In-house made). Any how take what you want with this post what do I know I'm sure the owner and chef are pondering the thought. Well I'm a retired executive chef that has been preparing many cultural dishes for over 25+ years. Spice wood and Sazzon are as good as it gets in alpine , I you have a large group than Spice wood as Sazzon it not setup to entertain a party of 5+ without dishes coming ot in an untimely order eating in front of your guest while they wait for their dish or eat a cold dish , but as long as it's a small table your good other than that Spice wood has a beautiful ambiance with gorgeous mountain views and cocktails that will have you craving more especially they're smoked old fashion. I hope this helps you on your venture out here in Alpine with your loved ones and guest. Do not be fooled by the antiquish building and decor that's as far as it goes. The biscuits were hard & cold, in FW that wouldn't have happened! Additionally, the salad greens appeared to be wilted & a bit to old. One of my agenda items in my second visit to Alpine, Texas, was dinner on the patio at Reata Restaurant! I had never forgotten the vegetable plate I enjoyed several years ago and ordered "Martha's vegetable plate" once again. It was as tasty and healthy as I remember! We made it in time for happy hour and enjoyed two "happy hours" under the wisteria of the pergola where we enjoyed dinner. Our server, Lorrie, was the best! We made a new friend! We are in town visiting some friends and found Reata on yelp. I've been here before but it was several years back and it was good. This time is was just average. They had a reduced menu due to the Rona but it was broad enough to represent what they used to be. I had calf fries and a Caesar salad. Friend had black pepper chicken fried chicken and his son had chicken fried steak. Their fry batter was very good but their gravy was mashed potato thick and flavorless. The salad I had was generic, at best. 4 croutons.....Cisco shaved Parmesan. We ordered Ranch Water for an adult beverage and they were terrible. I switched to a Malbec which wasn't bad but hey, it's a Malbec . Friends said there has been a major change in the restaurant and things have moved away from their original feel. Maybe it's the entire change that Alpine is facing more than anything. I neglected to get food pictures in my hanger. I'd go back but it's not like there is a huge selection here. read more

Saved by the chicken fried steak. Started with a cup of tortilla soup. Watery chicken broth over some shredded chicken, some cheese, and some chunks of avocado; all buried under a mountain of cilantro. Like an entire bunch. Then a few seemingly fresh fried tortilla strips. Pretty bland. OK, very bland. We opted not to get the jalapeños but a dish should be dependent on that to be flavorful. The side of broccoli was pretty much raw. I'm sure many people like their steamed broccoli like that but I don't so I left it alone. So, how do they climb out of this hole to get 4 stars? A brilliant chicken fried steak with very robust pepper gravy (although it could have used a touch more pepper but that is nitpicking) and some fantastic fresh mashed potatoes. The steak was very tender without being pulverized and it had a nice crunchy coating. The gravy was rich and just the right consistency. The ratio of gravy to steak and potatoes was spot-on as well. The potatoes had just the right amount of skin and lumps to make them just like at home. The pecan pie had a very soft and buttery crust. The pie (actually a tart) had small pieces of pecan and the filling melded beautifully with the crust. Nice close to the meal. So, kind of a rough start but the steak saved it. read more

We've eaten at the Fort Worth location and it was special...rooftop dining in downtown F.W. Had no idea this was the original location. Who knew?? The decor is Texas ranch chic. My wife had CFS. It was very tender, hand-breaded and HUGE. Great taste. The French cut green beans were bland. The mashed potatoes were definitely home-made, but needed some salt. The gravy was peppery and excellent. Overall, good not great. I had the asada steak and cheese enchiladas. Overall, quite good. The disappointment of the evening was the buttermilk pecan pie. I was expecting a rich, buttermilk chess pie or gooey pecan pie like my grandmother made so well...or some amazing hybrid of the two. This dessert was like a tort, about 7 inches across. Unfortunately, it was very thin and dry.....over-cooked? We love desserts, but this one wasn't worth the calories. Waitress was pleasant, but slightly inattentive during the meal. Giddyup, readers, we had quite the experience here for dinner tonight starting with the fact that we had to switch tables three--yes, THREE--times. Once was our fault, but twice was theirs. OK, so we were finally seated with a kid on a booster seat on a barstool (yes) and the first nice thing that we have to say about this place is that cocktails are a good deal ($6/pop). Four Corners IPA was $7/pop (???). Ambience inside is Western chic and since we had a tour of the grounds, we can say that the outside is just a bunch of metal tables strewn wherever. If they don't like the looks of you (and believe us, they smelled the Austin on us from a mile away), they will put you at the one table in the sun while it's blazin' saddles hot out. Anyway, food! We ordered our daughter the $20 penne with shrimp. Guess how many shrimp came out with it?! THREE is the magic number with this place! Yes, three freakin' shrimp with a bowl of penne, all yours for $20 in Alpine, Texas. The cheeseburger was actually OK and those be some damn-well seasoned fries you got there, Reata! The greens salad came out with some unadvertised green apples, which were unwelcome, but the dressing was good. The salad, which was essentially a side salad, was $9, but the burger was a fair $11. Guessing that the pricing person here does not have a PhD in economics... We figured out that we had actually been to a location of Reata at DFW Airport (since closed) a couple years ago, where we had had a surprisingly great experience. We're kind of baffled by this place; one of us would be willing to go back and try again but the other one is still put-off. Only time will tell, but three (fitting!) stars for now. read more

Nom nom nom. Cheesy jalapeno grits that taste like there's whole cream in there. Cilantro Jalapeno soup. Roasted asparagus rolled in bacon. Creative Texas food offered in a charming old building with great service. Did I mention the blue margaritas? I'm not a fan over overly sweet silly drinks, but this @zz-kicking margarita (yes it is blue) rocks. Not icky sweet, just blue. And good. And big. Served in a big ice tea glass. Will return, most definitely. PS: it is expensive, so plan for it. It's worth it. And call for a reservation. The soup was a thin broth and mediocre. Certainly not like the rich flavorful tortilla soups that I have had at much more reasonably priced restaurants. My husband and I were in Alpine last week and went to Reata twice for dinner, enjoyed it both times. We didn't have many other options with so few places open (traveling during Covid-19 is weird!) but we'd have still returned to Reata for another dinner because we enjoyed the food so much. I had the citrus crusted chicken and field greens salad and my husband had the carne asada. On our second visit we both ordered the field greens salad (so good!) but this time he got the tortilla soup which he said was delicious.
