We rolled through town on a motorcycle road trip after camping in Big Bend for days. We wanted a hot shower and some good food. Let me tell you we definitely got the good food at Reata. Of course, I relied on my Yelpers to make our dinner choice. Definitely call and make a reservation. This place fills up quick and we stopped in a Wednesday night. Our only choice was sitting in the bar and you can tell by the decor it was cool with us. Beer was cold and staff very friendly. I had the chicken fried steak and was it amazing!!! One of the better I've had. I savored every bite. The mashed potatoes were obviously homemade and just as good. Now the beans I had were just ok but not bad at all. One of the guys had the burger and said it was remarkable. I ended the night with their pecan pie. WOW !! So scrumptious. Flaky crust and out of this world flavors! This restaurant was recommended by the check in hotel staff. This is a busy weekend with car shows and music festivals so it's a good thing we made a reservation for 5 pm when it opened as it was totally full by 6. There is free dinner time parking at the bank across from the restaurant which is super convenient. Rustic design with high ceilings, heavy solid wood furniture, taxidermy animal heads on walls. Several dining rooms big and small - we were in one with a fire place and a big western painting with 4 tables set up with 2 and 4 tops. Had ceasar salad with steak, chicken nachos and pecan pie. All quite delicious, pecan pie had very nice melt in your mouth crust although pricey at $10. Service was good, food came quickly even though they were busy. Definitely a good restaurant anywhere and an absolute must try in Alpine. read more

Was staying in Alpine and apparently this was the go-to place for a nice date night. Reservations are currently required. Ambiance - Very Texas steakhouse-y, typical of West Texas. Service - Efficient and attentive. They have a limited COVID19 menu. Food - We had the chicken fried steak and Penne Pasta with Grilled Shrimp in Alfredo Sauce. Both were decent but nothing outstanding. Also had the azul margarita which was very sweet, but that was to be expected. Overall, nothing special but it's probably one of the few places in Alpine for finer-dining. I felt like it was a bit too expensive, but once was enough for me. read more

Service was great! Joseph was very friendly and attentive. The biscuits were good. We got the jalapeño poppers for an app. I thought they were ok. My boyfriend really enjoyed them. We both loved the grits that came with them. We spilt the steak. I must say I had high hops but we were let down. The quality was not there. It was bland, chewy, and over cooked. The mashed potatoes were the best thing! We also really liked the max and cheese. The house wine is the only cab you can get by the glass. I have ordered food from this particular restaurant a couple months ago and the food is the bomb! I ordered both my fiancé and myself an enchilada plate and man, it tasted so good! Driving through Alpine on our way to weekend in Big Bend (no joke, make sure you have all your provisions for your trip before leaving Alpine!) and looking for dog friendly lunch spot. Yelp directed us perfectly! What a beautiful enclosed and landscaped shady back patio! The staff couldn't have been more friendly and welcoming with fresh water for our dog bowl and treats offered to our pups. The food was really tasty and not just the standard you find at every restaurant. Especially enjoyed the huge portion of tenderloin tamales with pecan on top. Service was prompt and friendly. My boyfriend and I attempted to eat here during our visit in October 2020; unfortunately it was closed due to staff COVID outbreak according to the sign on the door. Excited to be back in Alpine and Reata was open for business! Our food and the service here were nothing short of amazing! The server had a very spunky, outgoing personality and joked with us throughout the night. We asked for her recommendation between the house Merlot and Cabernet; she suggested the Merlot and we were quite pleased (especially for the price). I had the Fried Poblano Chile Rellenos and 2 Bacon Wrapped Crab Stuffed Jalapeños which was to die for, I was stuffed after halfway through and kept nibbling because I couldn't stop!! Boyfriend had the chicken fried steak (he's a cfs connoisseur) and he said it was delicious; he cleaned his plate ;) Lorrie (hope I'm remembering her name correctly, but posting receipt she wrote her name on because she) deserves accolades for such fantastic service and conversation. I am a local here in Alpine. I've eaten at the Reata for almost 20 years. You used to get bread with dinner and you used to get a lot of food and didn't mind paying the price for it. Now, you get nothing. My wedge salad was to go. It was yellow and wilted with not enough dressing and barely any pico. The wedge was 2" wide! I am tired of paying top notch prices for mediocre food. My wedge and a BLT sandwich cost $46 with a tip! I will not be eating at the Reata again. read more

On our recent trip thru Chihuahuan desert, we spent the night in Alpine, TX. For such a small town we were pretty surprised to find "cowboy" restaurant with such an impressive service. It was a quiet night in May, they were still surprisingly busy.. honestly we were shocked when we were greeted by the hostess on the entrance. Definitely didn't expect that level of service in such a small town. The waiter really took his time to explain the menu and since we were really hungry did give us a warning that portions are big. Still till we actually saw our food come out, we didn't know how big. I couldn't even finish my tortilla soup, which was absolutely amazing. Cheese enchiladas were suppose to be my main dish, took them to go. My teens barely made a dent in their chicken pasta dish. Stopped in here for an order of some long awaited tenderloin tamales with pecan mash and they didn't disappoint. Unfortunately the reported Texas Monthly magazine's top 50 burger that they sell was very average at best, even with bacon and avocado added. Plus the bun was the coldest hamburger bun I've ever endured. The jalapeño and cheddar grits were good but served a little cool. The Dutch oven apple crisp dessert was a little disappointing- Overly sugary with a little apple filler or crunch. Looks to be one of the fancier place in town. It has a good Texan-fusion-modern menu. The bar and courtyard is beautiful. Service was great, folks were very attentive and friendly. The pecan biscuits and herb butter was the best. I could totally just eat those for my meal. Otherwise the entries were decent, some dishes were too greasy and oily, the kind that doesn't make your stomach feel great afterwards. The portion is very big, true Texas sized meals. However the food made me extremely thirsty afterwards which is a sign that they used MSG in their cooking. Be aware. Not a bad place for a stop to have a meal. read more

After reading a few reviews, we took note, and when we were 20 minutes out of Alpine made a 6:30 reservation. We were immediately brought to our table. The server, Joseph, arrived with a friendly smile and took our drink orders while we surveyed the menu. It's a one page menu but a good variety of entrees, appetizers and desserts to select from. Since we are on vacation and didn't want take home we asked if they do split orders. Yes, they do and do the split in the kitchen. Mom and I shared the chicken fried chicken and it was served with corn, mashed potatoes and gravy. It came out hot and tasty. My sisters split the chicken fried steak and served with mashed potatoes and gravy. They also ordered a side of jalapeno macaroni and cheese which was split between the 4 of us with a generous serving for all. Again, based on previous reviews I asked for biscuits. YUMMY Pecan honey biscuits. They are on the sweet side so we didn't need desserts and also because we were full. They didn't charge extra for the split orders nor for the biscuits. Okay, this place has character. There's deer mounts on the wall wearing masks, paintings of cows, and heavy wooden tables. We called in a reservation for the 5 of us last Tuesday. (They had outside seating as well, but we were told it was fly season, so we opted inside). Our server was helpful and gave us many suggestions (like my roomie and I splitting the Reata's salad, more on that later...). My friends had said that the drinks were good and strong. To start off with, my friend had a cup of the tortilla soup which was literally like a bowl and we had to try an order of the calf fries (on my bucket list- dont ask). It came out hot and topped with onion rings. They are interesting... the first bite good, the second not so much, the second calf fry better than the first. Definitely not like chicken, not like seafood with a gamey aftertaste. Would I get them again? I don't know. Unfortunately, close to $10 is a lot just to try something you're not sure you'll like and should come in smaller sample sizes. The menu was a little more extensive than what is found online and consisted of a variety of burgers (noticed a teen boy at the table next to us barely even touched his burger before he and his family left), enchiladas, salads, chicken fried steak, and blackened salmon- to name a few things. Our table got two of the seasonal pasta (sun dried tomato and chicken with a side of cheesy garlic bread) that were absolutely massive, the field greens salad topped with steak (our server's suggestion), goat cheese, and candied pecans, and a split order of the Reata's Salad Bowl for $9.95 (which was a good choice to!). Prices ranged from reasonable to a little more expensive depending on the item. Reata's salad consisted of a pasta, ranch, a subtle pecan mash, romaine, chicken, and supposed to have a pesto sauce. Although we only had takeout here, while I was waiting I could see that the place had all the markings of a very popular restaurant with the locals. We had bacon-wrapped asparagus on grits, which was very good. I'm not a grits devotee, but this was well-seasoned and tasty. The calamari I would not order again because it was cut in strips about the size of French fries. I'm accustomed to the skinnier rings that have a much crisper texture. However, the dipping sauce was quite good. For our "entree" we had tenderloin tacos--small pieces of excellent beef cooked just the way I ordered it. The sauce was very good. If you're spending a couple of days in Alpine like us, you should have at least one meal at Reata. read more

If you're ever in Alpine, Reata Restaurant is a can't miss spot. It was especially meaningful for me due to it's connection to the movie Giant. The historic Western was filmed in Alpine's sister city, and rival, Marfa. Reata pays homage to the classic with a beautiful mural on the patio of a scene from the movie featuring Elizabeth Taylor and James Dean. The mural is huge and serves for a nice backdrop as your dining. Even if you're not familiar with the movie, hitting up Reata is a couple of hours well spent as its one of Alpine's most popular, if not most popular, restaurants. We were seated on the outdoor patio and we had a reservation. The hostess wasn't the friendliest to start out with but things picked up from there. I started off with a vodka cherry limeade which tasted just like a cherry limeade from Sonic that's been spiked (like you used to do in high school). From there, me and my buddy split the carne asada and the citrus crusted chicken. They both were interesting dishes. The carne asada was seasoned well and flavorful and comes with Reata's famous cheese enchiladas. They weren't my favorite but they are unique compared to your typical enchilada. The star of the show for me was the citrus crusted chicken. Not sure if I've ever had citrus crusted chicken but what stood out for me was how delicious the sauce is. My dining partner was in agreement. Reata makes for a beautiful restaurant with great food. Service can be a bit of a wild card or it would be a five-star restaurant. read more

Made a reservation for 6 at 8:00 for inside! The hostess greeted us as rudely as I've ever been greeted at a restaurant. We waited outside for our table as directed and she finally stuck her head out screamed our name and screamed "outside is all I have!" As we went outside she peeled off and we proceeded outside u til she raised her voice again letting us know NOT to go ahead. By the time our waitress even reached us the night was definitely off to a very rough start. 30 minutes in, still no appetizers. Appetizers began trickling out. 2 salads, then 5 minutes later 2 warm appetizers, then 5 minutes layers the cup of tortilla soup. The skin on the cream gravy was so thick you could tell it had been sitting there a while. No explanation, no apology. Entrees rolled out the same way. A couple here a couple there and then finally the last two. The taste was good but the meal experience was not up to par at all. I'm writing this as we sit and wait on our starters. I went to Texas last week to see the eclipse, and that night ended up staying in Alpine, TX (incidentally, the Holland Hotel was awesome). We visited Reata Restaurant and loved it. It may have been a little busier than usual due to the eclipse, and there was a wait for a table. I know that because the couple in front of us, probably in their 60's, were trying to get a table. I think it was the first time they ever had to make a reservation, which they did not already have (though the restaurant accepts them). The reason it seemed to me like their first-ever reservation was because, when told there would be a 30-45-minute wait, the woman said, "what am I supposed to do, stand here and wait??" Seriously? The woman who worked there was so excellent and professional and patient, despite her shock. She had owner vibes, but I don't know if she is, or a manager, or what her position is. She probably doesn't deal with "Karens" very often in the Big Bend region of Texas, but she knew what to do. She asked, "would you like to put in your name?" The rude customer started walking away from the employee, then said curtly "put it under Bruce," as she continued to leave the restaurant. The employee said, "hold on, there's more information I need." The Karen said "OH, IT'S COMPLICATED, IT'S NOT EASY!!!" All she needed was to give her phone number to get a text when the table was ready. Geez! Anyway, they gave the info, and they left. I shared my shock and disgust with the employee at how a person can behave that way simply because a restaurant is full. I don't know if that couple simply didn't want to sit outside (I arrived there when she was already complaining that there was a wait), but needless to say, my daughter and I were promptly seated outside in the lovely back of the restaurant. The grounds were great; there is artwork and trees, and the tables and chairs were beautiful, too. The service was wonderful, and the food was excellent. I had the carne asada with enchiladas, and my daughter had the grilled chicken sandwich. We loved it. If we ever visit Alpine again, I will definitely have a meal at Reata Restaurant again. read more

Ordered a Dos Equis beer with onion rings. Beer was cold and some of the best rings i ever had. Sour cream chicken enchiladas were awesome loaded with cheese and the sauce was outstanding. Girlfriend had the poblano chile reneo. Super good. Server was great. The outdoor patio was in full swing and great vibes all around. All in all a super great experience and great food. We went to Reata for a belated birthday dinner on our trip to Alpine and the Big Bend Region. The ambiance was fantastic, and the food surpassed that. We had the Chicken Tortilla Soup, which was very good, and a Jalapeno Cream soup that was amazing. We split the Chicken Fried Chicken entree, which was definitely in the top 3 I've ever had. Even splitting it, there was almost too much food since we were saving room for dessert. We decided on the Chocolate Bread Pudding Tamale. It came out with a little birthday candle and a card signed by the staff, which was so nice. The pudding was absolutely delicious as was the ice cream on the side. I'm quite glad it was my belated birthday dinner so I got a bit more than half of that dessert! At Reata in Alpine, Texas, the culinary journey this time (have eaten here many times) was akin to stepping into a comfortable, yet unchanging world. The chicken fried steak, a Southern classic, was satisfying in its simplicity, but lacked a certain flair that could elevate it beyond the ordinary. The hamburger, while hearty, echoed a similar sentiment - competent but crying out for a modern twist. The vegetable plate, was okey dokey.... And provided needed freshness to the meal, yet it too seemed to yearn for a dash of innovation. It's clear the menu, steadfast in its offerings for a long long long long long time is in dire need of a culinary facelift to match the evolving tastes of its patrons. Our server was great. I am here at the Reata where I came with my family to enjoy a 50 dollar steak. Though my steak was cooked perfectly to my liking today, Medium well. However the steak was over seasoned. The mashed potatoes over seasoned. The broccoli was good. My wife ordered the blackened salmon was cooked very dry, the rice was salty and mushy. We really liked the bread and had 2 pieces each in 50 minutes while we waited for our food. When our food reached us they had no more bread. The coffee was great. There were 5 in our party tonight. Our meal was horrible. The chicken fried steak was thin, dried out and over cooked. No part of the breading stuck to the steak. I guess the kitchen ran out of mash potatoes because there was very very small portion. However, steam broccoli was on point. My girlfriend had the shrimp and grits. During the wait, another couple entered the restaurant, told the manager that they had an 8:00 reservation, and the couple were sat instantly. Mean while we continued to wait for our 8:00 table for 2. When our table became ready, the hostess told us "the table is ready, it's over there," pointed to it, and rushed off. Our server was very nice; no complaints about her. We did have interactions with, what I am assuming was, the manager. She was not a pleasant woman and not welcoming.
