I hate having to deal with these people. If they would just do their jobs, as the trash service here did 20 years ago, it would be fine. One should never need to contact the trash people. It should just work. As it is, when I call to get something done that should be automatic, it is as if the people on the phone are concocting their own policies in their head, with full confidence. Posting this as Recology has been skipping our trash pickup frequently (for years now). Sometimes we'll have a month or two where things seem to be going smoothly, but looks like we are back to missed pickups and waiting on hold forever to talk to a customer service agent to get things sorted. Recently, our recycling was skipped two weeks ago. Then, it was skipped AGAIN last week. The driver came by and we watched him pickup the building next door's bins and seemed to have intentionally skip ours. We are tired of these monopolized services having zero impetus to provide standard services we PAY for. This has been an ongoing issue with this specific driver for years, and all Recology admits is that they can't cover his shifts when he takes vacations... We expect a better explanation and resolution and at this point a refund for the trouble. We are tired of this and our bins are full. We hear Recology is going to rollout cameras to automatically charge for over-filled bins as well??? Seems scammy to force residents to overfill their bins and not receive weekly pickup we pay for. The reviews people leave are ridiculous. This company is a good company with good employees who value good business, and good service to its customers. All these jerks that left one star or two star or three star reviews were extremely nice, courteous and respectful when in front of the business, when speaking with business employees, however, They would never mouth these concerns out loud because they're cowards, they do it in secret behind the employers back. This place is a bargain compared to what other places charge.. the drivers the employees here are exceptional. They go out of their way to help the customer. They're always cheerful and happy.. and I can't say enough about the service that the drivers provide. If they accidentally swallow your bin, it's an easy process to get another one and they don't charge you for it. The service here exemplary. The employees, the staff and management all work equally to provide service and accept and resolve all service requested . They went out of their way to help me and I won't forget it. read more

The cases when Recology does not pick up the garbage become more and more frequent. Sometimes, the garbage truck comes next day; sometimes it doesn't. The latest case: the pickup on December 23rd did not happen; there was no pickup on the next day either. So, we are stuck with a full garbage can over Christmas. Last week our recycling bins were not picked up. So I called last week and provided my address. The person who I spoke to was able to determine the account since I live at a Condominium complex. She said our HOA has callled and has arranged a pick up service for Thursday or Friday. Well on our recycling bins haven't been emptied. On 12/22/24@ 9am I called Recology's main number. This is only for one person who failed to assist me on the phone. I informed her of the situation and that gave her my address. I told her I don't have the address that is associated with the account since we have HOA. She refused to assist me unless I gave her the address. I told it issue should be noted somewhere. How was the other employee able to assist and not her. I'm sure with a research she would have found it. She has very poor customer service. Maybe it's time for her to retire or find another job. read more

This company is a disaster. They frequently miss pickups. Their website seems like it was made by the owner's nephew in 1997 and every time I try to log on it tells me my "account has been locked." Why? No idea. I call, get it unlocked and then it works for that day... until the next time I need to use it. Why? Because we have no choice but to use them. read more

Recology has a few angles I've interacted with. There are some challenges they're facing, like any business, but overall it is an awesome an comprehensive operation. I'd like to start with their educational program I've participated in before the covid times. It was a free tour in their recycling facilities. It was an eye opening experience, how huge the operation is, and what they do on a daily basis to keep Bay Area clean. Then, their bulk collection days are amazing. Yes, to take a full advantage on this service, you have to plan ahead: scheduling is typically a week or two in advance. Each customer can schedule up to 2 free bulk collection days per year, or pay a fee if you need more. Also, you have to pack your things, so it will be easy for the crew to pick up. Then, you have to take it to the curb before the collection time, typically the night before. The operator will ask you what are you trying to get rid of, in order to help you navigate the pick-up rules. Additionally, you can drive to their dump center and get rid of excessive stuff. Something like extra carton boxes, old medicine, electronics and more. All of that is for free! There is a Recology worker to help you navigate all different bins. Finally, there is a weekly operation for garbage collection. Sure, sometimes they miss a can or two due to a human factor: New or substitute driver is most often the case. However, operators are pretty responsive and will send someone to pick up the next day. Moreover, even though the waitlist is long, but broken cans are being replaced if you ask for it. In addition to picking up our trash, recycling, and compost every week, we've had good experiences with the bulky item pickup and the in-person services. My wife will strategically figure out how to use our two pickups a year and amass items from our home to junk; it's nice to clear things out when necessary and not everything finds a home through our local Buy-Nothing group. I stopped by early Saturday morning to drop off some large cardboard boxes from the holidays (it only took me a month to get my act together and load up the car). They've got a few dumpsters set up for cardboard, as well as a lot of other containers for electronics, batteries, paper, metal, motor oil, etc. It's nice to know that we can come here to get rid of these things when they are dangerous or won't fit in our containers. read more

The lady who took my call (she didn't give me her name) not only quickly solved both problems for me but she absolutely couldn't have possibly been nicer. They have fabulous customer service. I've always been promised my requests from new bins to forgotten bins to the curb by us and they resend the driver without any complaints. They did get terribly messy on pickup day leaving tons of debris in the street but this has resolved. I often spent over a good hour cleaning up in front of my house. Recology Redwood City BLEW the Holiday pickup Monday 12-25!! 50% of customers on Madison Ave were not advised when the cans would be picked up due to the Holiday on our regular day. How do I know that? Because today, Wednesday 50% of us had our cans out for pick up. Its 6:56 PM and the blue bin/recycle still has NOT been picked up. There is a rumor going around we should have put them out for a Saturday pickup. It doesn't say that on the calendar for my address!! How is it Recology supposedly communicated the date we "should" have put our cans out? This sounds like a breach of service contract on Recology's part. They should refund all of us for the month........or maybe a date in court will get the Judges sympathy? Next year Christmas is Wed. Came here to recycle a carload of cardboard boxes and it was plenty easy. Pulled up, located the labeled dump for cardboard, piled it in, and went on my merry way. I asked about recycling plastic bubble wrap but unfortunately they do not take plastic packing materials. For hazardous materials like paint, there was a sign indicating that one should wait for assistance. Nice to have a recycling and disposal option nearby. read more

Recomogy sucks! I didnt break down one tiny amazon box in my recycling bin (and the bin lid was fully closed and not overstuffed) and they didnt take my recycling! Third tume this has happened. The customer service on the phone sucks. I broke my arm the day before and couldnt break down my stupid little box. One two separate incidents, they took our garbage bin and then our recycling bin and it was a pain to request new ones!!! All previous complaints listed here apply to our situation, in one way or another. Poor phone customer service and did not pick up composting cart on scheduled day. I called and was told they would be out the next day. Didn't happen, so I called again and was told the ticket was given to the driver that day, but that he already left to go home. And that they would pick it up the next day. Didn't happen again. I called again and was told they'd be out the next day (that it was being elevated to supervisor). Never showed the next day either. Monopoly allowed by San Mateo City. Management should be replaced with competence. Drivers make $140/yr. plus over time of about $20-30K/yr. Thats $170K/yr. on our tax dime. Should be cut in half at the most. Boycott if we can. On going problems for years. Stop paying the bills. read more

I've been at the same residence for the past 20 yrs and never had a problem until this week... Wednesday am is my pick up date. I always have my bins out early and never worry about when or if. Wednesday pm, my black bin is still full (WTF). I give them a call, they say sorry and we'll pick it up tomorrow. Fine. Thursday pm, black bin is still full (WTF). I call again but this time they are like really? It shows that it was picked up at noon. Ah no that's a lie, my bin is still full (I got a pic). Sorry we'll be by tomorrow. Are you sure cuz you said that yesterday. Anyways. Friday am I call just to make sure I am on the list to be picked up. Can't tell me what time but by 5 pm cuz that's when the drivers are done. I ask for the supervisor's name just in case I needed to call back and speak w them. Noon, I'm having lunch and I hear the all familiar break sound. I see on my cam they are here and taking my garbage...yahoo it only took 2 extra days & 3 calls. I've read other reviews and looks like I am not alone in my frustration w this company. This is the fifth time in this year they missed picking up my cart. They picked up my neighbors cart, but when they put it down, it fell right in front of my cart and blocked. Then they just drove by my cart straightly and didn't pick up mine!!! Ridiculous!!! Not to mention how many times after they picked up, the carts lie on the street!!! Recology's website is a waste (of time). They haven't updated it in 10 years and it feels very clumsy. Hard to navigate, hard to login, and hard to make a payment. It gives you a feeling they hate their customers. If you have questions about the website, nobody there can answer them. There's no point dealing with that monstrosity. It's honestly a hit or miss with this location. I feel as if they look at your load and just hit you with a random number. I come here a lot as i work as a mover. Some days are low, some are higher. Nobody likes going to the dumps...well maybe my dad did when I was a kid growing up he was a regular at the dumps by Shadow Cliffs in Pleasanton; he'd always haggle/bullshit with the guy at the gate about the prices of garbage. Back then it was like 15 bucks for a TV, 10 bucks a couch, and 10 bucks for a cubic yard. I've been here a few time and finally got around to writing a review. 41 BUCKS for a cubic yard of residential garbage and 38 bucks a couch! Damn these guys don't play, their rent must be crazy high. Anyway, waiting in a long line every time doesn't help with the experience either. I'd say I usually wait around 25 minutes in line before I get a chance to start dumping my garbage. My interactions with the employees have been nice though: friendly and helpful(its probably a really good gig with great benefits). Except for the guy at the gate who probably gets crap from half of the people that dump garbage there so he has to be a hardass. read more

what a terrible service. I have contacted recology many times since moving to Sonoma county. I learned not to call them right away after 30 min+ waits with multiple disconnects. they do respond to emails promptly, but everything is a 3 week wait (ie drop off bins after moving to a new address). then they "forget" when the scheduled day finally arrives, resetting for another 3 weeks (I'm on my 4th try to have them pick up an excess bin they delivered to our dead end street which is crowded with bins and my new neighbors are getting annoyed). worse service I've ever dealt with in 47 years. read more

I live on Patricia Avenue in San Mateo. Unfortunately and overnight two nights ago somebody had dumped a bunch of Chinese food takeout in my green recycling bin. I'm talking cartons of food, trays of food, bag and soda cans. The grease and the sauce if you will has pooled at the bottom of my cart as you can see in the picture. I called them yesterday to tell them that I wanted it noted in my account that this was not my mess. I also asked what was I supposed to do because I have a bad neck, back, and wrist. I am unable to clean up this entire mess myself. She said it was my responsibility otherwise I would get charged for it if the driver picked it up and saw what was inside. I then called back this morning to try to talk to somebody else to see if I could basically just switch out the cans so I could get a new one. This person was worse than yesterday very rude. She said if I wanted a new can I was going to have to pay for it, $92. So here I sit with a trash can full of disgusting decaying food. I also asked on the phone this morning what do the elderly or handicapped people do...is it their responsibility to clean the stuff out and her answer was I guess it is. I detest this company.
