Dr Kornfeld and Inna N.P. Are con artists. They did not interact me the patient. They created a triangulation of misinformation to benefit their agenda and pockets. I am afraid that I have to agree with the review about Dr. Kornfeld's propensity to overmedicate. I went to him post rehab to taper off long term low dose Benzodiazepine use. It should have been a straight forward proposition. 5 months later I am on over twice as much Benzo, I am on Bupenorphrine, an opiate, and I have had an ER visit when he substituted a different medication for the benzo. This medication was more than 6 times stronger than the already elevated benzo he had me on. He also insisted after the ER incident that my daily medications be hand delivered. This cost me $ 1,750 a week for a once a day pill delivery. This was done without my agreement or any explanation of what service was supposed to be provided. If you have addiction problems I would caution you to stay away from Dr. Kornfeld. read more

I was forced by yelp to rate Dr. Kornfeld with at least one star, but I would not have given him any if I had my way. My review differs from the two I just read completely. I went to Dr. Kornfeld for chronic migraine pain, and nothing he gave me, save a valium-type medication, helped. The valium helped only because it made me not care about the pain as much. But I was on an old, long-acting benzo drug called librium, which my girlfriend, a nurse, said nobody uses anymore, because it's so addictive. Finally, I wanted off the 8 medications that Dr. Kornfeld had me on (on top of the 5 hormone medications I was already taking), because none of them were really doing anything for my pain, and being up and down and all around with all these meds made it increasingly harder to manage my two small boys or have a relationship with them or my husband. Dr. Kornfeld had me get off the librium so quickly, I had a nervous breakdown which resulted in my being hospitalized. He, of couse, denies any part of this. I am now seeing a new doctor who helped me get off the librium over a six month period, which was one of the most difficult things I've ever done. She said it's easier to get someone off of heroine then off of a benzo like librium. She also said that her peers over the years have nicknamed him "the Drug Dealer," and just recently she has taken on two new clients of his, with the same exact story of overmedicating. I've also met many others throughout and since this ordeal who saw him and had a similar experience. I resorted to going to a women's AA group to help me come off all the drugs he had me on, and told my story. Several of the women there came up to me afterwards and said they knew of many others who had been through the same experience with this man, and who had ended up in AA telling a similar story. I think Dr. Kornfeld is reckless and irresponsible, and should have his license to drug people revoked indefinitely. read more

I was a former patient of Dr. Kornfeld between 2003-2004 and am lucky to be alive! When I initially consulted with him, I was on low doses of pain meds. Over the course of several months, he increased my pain meds with a toxic cocktail of opiates, as my organs were shouting down...I was on a death spiral. The following are daily doses of his lethal combination: Methadone 300 mg, Bupenorphrine 150 mg, Benzodiazepines, 150 mg, Dilaudid and Fentanyl. My sister, a physicians assistant, was working for a board certified (Stanford trained) anesthesiologist who specialized in pain management. When she reviewed the list of meds, she thought there was a typo! Immediately, she contacted several rehab institutions, including Betty Ford and Scripps. They stated the maximum amount of methadone for detoxing their patients was 30 mg per day. I was on 10 times that amount, 300 mg of methadone! As my organs were shutting down, my sister realized the urgency of my condition and feverishly sought alternate solutions. Learning the term "URD" from her colleague, ultra rapid detox was on my only option. The URD facility stated I was on the highest dose of opiates, etc. ( based on body ratio) they'd treated. The effects caused by the egregious amount of opiates could result in death during detox. I pursued, realizing this was my only option to live. Post detox, I met several Kornfeld patients who shared similar horror stories. I'm lucky to be alive and am sharing my experience with this "addiction specialist" to spare others from the pain, suffering and iatrogenesis imposed upon me. read more

I owe my life to Dr. Kornfeld. He pulled me out of a dark, deep hole. My case is atypical. My addiction was not to recreational drugs. Years ago a rheumatologist prescribed for me an off-label drug to relieve severe muscular pain. I am 5'7" and had fallen because of pain, without intention, to 104 pounds in 6 weeks. My rheumatologist feared an internal organ shutdown. Both diagnosis and medication in those days were limited. The drug was psychoactive, but was prescribed for me for "little studied muscular effects." That doctor died and my primary care doctor continued my regimen on that drug, telling me that the side effects were minimal. He was very wrong. My white blood cell count fell to dangerous levels, and the side effects were dire. That doctor abruptly, over-night, took me off that drug without any support or guidance, and I, after years of usage, went into a horrible withdrawal. I hate to think what would have happened to me without Dr. Kornfeld. Through alternate, non-addictive medication; kind, deep and patient verbal interaction; recommendations as to changes in lifestyle; and, most of all, emotional support, I have made an almost complete recovery. My life is restored, my interaction with friends has made great strides, and I am sure that the path ahead is very promising. I recommend Dr. Kornfeld with the greatest gratitude and enthusiasm. read more

I started being treated by Dr. Kornfeld almost ten years ago. I had major illnesses that required a tremendous amount of pain medication. The pain meds were destroying my life. But the illnesses demanded I numb the pain to even function at a minor level. Dr. Kornfeld is a miracle worker who saved my life! I have been under his care for almost 3 years. Before him my life was a nightmarish existence of chronic pain caused by ovarian cysts and the multiple surgeries I had to remove them which in turn caused severe nerve pain. Other Dr's kept telling me the cysts could not be causing that much pain and that I was hysterical, overreacting and/or just trying to get pain pills. I went to countless doctors, even the UCLA pelvic pain clinic, I took out an ovary. I was desperate! No one could help me. I was ready to give up. I could not stand living every day in agony anymore. I had no life. When I went to see Dr. Kornfeld and his nurse Inna (who understands a lot about women's issues) they really listened to my story and actually believed it, they didn't judge me. I was put on a medication regimen that stopped the pain for the first time in years and it didn't make me feel out of it. I could take it and go to work! We constantly spend money on items designed to give us short term pleasure, like wine or vacations or gifts to worthy causes. But there is nothing as important as pain relief or addiction relief. This is an investment that not only benefits you, but all those with whom you have contact. Pain and the accompanying mental stress effects your personal life, your business life and all your relationships. My wife and I were both suffering from permanent pain due to a parasite infection that damaged our spinal cord. We had been engaged in multi year programs from our HMO that had us on various regimes of Oxycontin and Vicadin. When we tried to taper down, the years of pills had made it hard to distinguish between the pain and the withdrawal. The HMO was perfectly sympathetic, but they are too overwhelmed to give the individual attention that might provide relief. Furthermore, in my situation, the pain had affected my work and I entered an unfamiliar and unsettling dark place. The HMO had me taking Ativan for a year, when two weeks is supposed to be max and was starting me into Prozac. I could tell immediately this was not going to work. It was generic pharmacology that was dumb and dumber. My blood pressure was soaring to 165/105. I was not sleeping, I was wiped out by minor exercise and I felt like a zombie. So I went to see Dr Inna Zelikman at Recovery Without Walls. My wife had gone to see her three months earlier and Dr. Zelikman had proscribed a regime of treatment that got her off six years of Oxycontin in 48 hours. She had more energy and was transformed. My situation was more complex. Dr. Zelikman prescribed a variety of drugs and timing and monitored me every 24 hours for the first week and then every 48 hours for the second week. It was remarkable. I kicked the ativan in 48 hours and my mood began shifting within a week. The goal with Recovery Without Walls is not to substitute one drug for another. Buprenorphine has been taking some flack recently for Doctors or patients who demean an effective treatment by abusing. But this is Marin County, not back county Georgia, where bored teens are obsessed with prescription drugs. The stigmatization of certain pharmaceuticals, has more to do with pharm-chem politics and poor controls. We are not trying to get high, we are just trying to get normal. The goal of RWW is to wean you of all dependency, so you can live a normal, drug free life. This requires close attention and regular shifting of a variety of meds, based on your personal physiology. My HMO refers to this as "concierge medicine" and confesses that they will never be able to match this level of attention or creative chemistry. At my HMO, a simple appointment with the chemical dependency doctor can take six weeks. In some situations you do not have that time. Nor can you wait years for the experimentation process involved in determining what is correct for you system. It is now five months into my treatment. My situation has been transformed. I am feeling like the person I knew two years ago and the previous decades. It could never have happened without RWW and Dr. Zelikman. RWW does not take insurance and is not cheap. I was in trouble. A pinched nerve caused excruciating pain. My primary care doctor prescribed Oxycontin to relieve the agony. Although effective, once the pain subsided I was left with a dependence on the narcotic. Stuck between a rock and a hard place, Dr. Kornfeld at Recovery Without Walls was recommended to assist me with an Oxycontin dependence that was ruining my life. Dr. Kornfeld guided me on a gentle transition off the Oxycontin using Buprenorphine as a substitute medicine. After several months working with Dr. Kornfeld, I now have my life back. For me, Buprenorphine does not interfere with any activities of day to day life. There is no longer a hazy filter between me and the world. Dr. Kornfeld appeared in my life at the moment I needed his guidance the most. He remains extremely caring and has always been available to receive and respond to any of my communications. It is as if I have a personal on call doctor available to tend to my medical needs. He remains the best doctor for me to manage my dependance on opioids as I begin tapering off the Buprenorphine. I have never written a review on something as personal as my physician but I feel compelled to because there are so many people dealing with the kinds of issues Dr. Kornfeld treats. I have been a patient of Dr. Kornfeld's for several years and could not be more pleased. I am amazed at the scientific knowledge he has on the complex interrelationships of brain function and chemistry as it relates to pain and addiction. He's a bit of a therapist as well and always has a sympathetic ear in helping people deal with the psychological side of pain and addiction. His associate John Calella is a brilliant therapist. He has that knack for cutting through all the clutter and getting to the heart of the problem. This man has a great sense of empathy for the suffering of others, even folks he barely knows. I have not had direct dealings with the other folks in the office but they all seem calm, competent, and non- judgmental. The fact that they've been with Dr. Kornfeld so long speaks to their competence as well. There are many articles in the local media, including the IJ and SF Chronicle about Dr. Kornfeld's work. Why 5 stars? When someone helps me as much as Howard Kornfeld has there can be no other rating. read more
