I came here with co workers to get some work done and the service was absolutely awful. There was a bug in my salad. Then we were told we had to move several times for an event, which is fine, but the staff was very rude about it when we were paying customers. When I went to close out, I was told I had to wait while the bartender served three other people instead. Then he proceeded to say, "it's a bold move to close out when it gets busy." As thought that's my problem, or I need to close out on his terms not mine as the customer. It's a shame because the food and drinks are decent but the staff is so rude.The manager even came up to me asking how I could be served and I said, "i just want to close out," and he also did not help me. Recreation post-pandemic has been under new management with all new cocktails and menu items. It's a great place to have fun with friends and family. Kid-friendly games like pac man and skee-ball as well as a whole half court all within the lounge space. My favorite drink is the 'Nothin but Net' a watermelon cocktail. They also have trivia nights, live music, fantasy nights, and DJs coming in on the weekends. Definitely a hidden gem in the city. read more

We're staying at the Moxy for a week through the new year and you have go through this restaurant to go to your room. There is a game room with a basketball court on one end and free arcade games with Pac-Man and skew ball on the other. The vibe is very chill. The drinks were made very strong which isn't a bad thing. We ordered a pretty in pink and risky business. My girlfriend has to have them water the drink down it was so strong. And in the risky business you could taste the ginger. It was really strong. To eat we ordered a 4 cheese and bbq flatbread. One is big enough for real people. I liked the four cheese a little better than the bbq. The also gave some cold options but on a cold day you want something warm. Around 5 pm there was a dj playing music. He played some hip hop and r&b. The lights were dimmed and the vibe was super chill. This spot actually surprised me. It was busy, but not overly crowded and indoors so away from the cold. If I could give a zero I would, honestly the hospitality is so off here. Came in with some friends to grab a few drinks & we sat at a table waited for about 10 minutes no one came so one of us went to the bar to order. While we're finally enjoying our drinks we ask for water and in disbelief the manager comes over damn near yelling at us asking how are we going to pay in a very nasty tone as if we didn't have money. Mind you we weren't even done ordering drinks but that just made us not want to anymore. And it was around 12:30ish am and they close at 2:30 am so we were confused. The manager went around slamming the connect 4 into the pins & was rude to other customers there to the point everyone by the game section were just looking at each other like what's wrong with this guy? The servers were very kind, the atmosphere was great, but the drinks were absolutely horrible. I would pay that high of a price for a really nice drink, but most of ours tasted like dirty dishwater. They all looked quite nice, but my group found it hard to finish any of our drinks off of their menu, especially at the higher price point!We gave them one more chance by getting a basic lemon drop, but it still was pretty gross, again, like dirty dishwater! My boyfriend and I ordered the same thing, and the two drinks tasted completely different. I will start off by saying that I always read reviews whenever travelling for restaurants, hotels, etc however I rarely write reviews unless my experience was so horrible that I want to warn others. The motivation I had to try it out was for my teenage kids who love basketball and were intrigued by this half court inside the restaurant. So I braced myself and went and had zero expectations .. well boy was I so pleasantly surprised by the whole experience!! First of all I emailed them in advance because I wasn't sure if my teens would be allowed in as I thought it was more of a bar than a restaurant. I received a very professional and helpful email in return explaining that the kids were welcomed and just weren't allowed to sit at the bar (obviously) so that was perfect. We headed there for a late lunch and from the extremely patient hostess to the lovely, polite and professional waitress and the lounge like decor- the ambiance felt extremely comfortable and fun. The food was tasty, fresh and fairly priced and I also found there was a decent selection of what to eat for a bar.. oh and they have a great coffee machine if you love good coffee! The lounge area was so cozy and eating/drinking there while spending time playing board games, skee ball and of course basketball was such an added bonus!!! My kids met other kids and loved their experience there too.. another bonus!.. so yes!.. I would definitely highly recommend this place to anyone, but especially families with kids (tweens/teens) who can spend some time in a cool fun place with their family while in NYC!! Great food. Loved the avocado toast. Came with a soft boiled egg which I'm glad they took the time to do. It was really filling and had lots of flavor. My SD had the parfait with a muffin. He swallowed it so I'm guessing he liked it. The half of muffin is still there so it wasn't bangin, but still a decent muffin. I went to Recreation after the 4th of July fireworks this year. For such a popular night of the year, I was pleasantly surprised to see that the bar was not incredibly crowded, but had enough people around to give it a nice amount of energy. The space is very well decorated with many interesting artistic details and has a nice modern feel to it as well. It is located a few floors up from the initial reception in the building, with many people staying at the hotel going in and out of the bar, which was distracting but not necessarily a negative. As other reviews have mentioned, the service was slow considering it wasn't overly busy. We ordered two beers, then spent the rest of the time playing all of the different games in the bar. They had a small two-player arcade machine, a shuffle board table, two skee ball machines, and board games. I recently visited Recreation as part of my wedding weekend, and discourage anyone from bringing a group solely due to the poor service habits and standards of bar/event management. Long story short: I liked Recreation as a space for the night-before "pre-wedding drinks," and asked during a walk-through months back if they accommodate groups. They said they did, and while I didn't need to book a private event, I mentioned it would be nice to set aside 1-2 tables for our guests just in case the place was crazy and a few folks who need seats showed up. In the 2 weeks leading up to the evening we planned to visit, I called Recreation directly at least 2 dozen times. Didn't matter if it was during business hours or not, no one answered. Finally, I reached out to the front desk of the Moxy to help me reach someone. The front desk agent was kind and patched me to the bar manager, who *yet again* didn't answer. I called back to the front desk and the kind woman said she would make a note and talk to the bar. Again, we only asked for 1-2 tables for 2 hours. Nothing huge. Our group showed up at 9p and quickly grew to be about 40-50 people. It worked out that it was a slow Saturday night at the bar, so we were about 80% of the people there. Guests were having a good time. The bar staff was good, the vibe was good, the drinks were good. So why only 2 stars? When we entered the bar and found it to be 1/3 full, we found a table and sat down. We were quickly greeted by events manager Brittany, who told us that the tables were all reserved, and quickly ran through 2-3 names of people. Apparently, others were able to get through and make reservations, but she had no clue who I was. I explained the situation and said that we have at least 30 people coming, nearly all tables are empty, so what can we do? Really, we only are asking for 1-2 tables (8 seats tops), just to help accommodate our older guests. Slipping me her card, Brittany made the most passive-aggressive comment that when I want to bring a big group, to give her a ring. I get it - people reserve tables - but her response to this situation, the fact we gave the business at least 50% (if not more) of its revenue that night, and we couldn't even get a respectful reply to our ask, ruined the experience. We watched the famously-reserved tables, and they were empty all night. Literally, we were the only group there, and Brittany would not allow us to sit down. The best part? She sat there the whole night with papers and a laptop out, doing work when not talking and walking about. As I said, our guests were having a good time. The bar staff was good, the vibe was good, the drinks were good. But it only takes one bad service experience to cement an opinion, and that is exactly what happened here. This is a great after work spot in fidi when you don't wanna go to the nearby Irish pubs. It's pretty spacious so it works if you're having a crowd, although it might be standing room only. Was staying at the Moxy, went to the bathroom and when I came out, the bouncer was yelling at my 17 year old brother saying he would fucking kill him and beat his ass, I had to literally get in between him and my brother. And he started to get into my face. I told him that it was not appropriate. When I asked my brother why, he said because the guy said he was too young to be there. Spending a few days at this hotel where I got the chance to sit in Recreation numerous times. The food and drinks are great, far exceed my expectations for a hotel bar. That being said, the service is terrible. The first time I sat down, it took the waiter about 20 minutes to come to my table despite the area being fairly empty. Not sure if it was my fault for not going up to them and asking for service, but I've never had to do that anywhere so I can't imagine that was the issue. The second time was about the same. No one in the bar area except me. I kept trying to make eye contact with the servers, but it seemed they didn't want to help me. Came here on a Saturday night with my boyfriend. I was in the restroom and he tried to order but the bartender refused to get him his drink until I came back. His excuse was because he wanted to put in a full order. Let me say, I have worked in the service industry as a bartender and a waiter, and that's bullshit. To add insult to injury, the cocktails are on tap. It's not like he had to muddle and whatever. He literally had to walk ten feet and pull a lever. The manager apologized and said that the bartenders were overwhelmed and like to take full orders but that's no excuse. No it's not. We weren't asking him to memorize an August Wilson play. We were asking him to get a drink, and if he couldn't remember what my boyfriend ordered by the time I ordered, he could ask, "hey man, what did you get again?", then put it in the computer system. And, if the bartenders are overwhelmed, maybe get another bartender. Keep in mind that when we were there, the place was 1/3-1/2 full. It's not even that the bar was rows deep with people. This is New York- you can't afford to be lazy and make excuses for what is just terrible service. read more
