Well organized, well lit, with pleasant chairs to sit on and laptop desks. Prices on ordinary books are quite low -- $1 paperbacks, $2 hardbacks. Yes, expect to find them picked over by online booksellers, so don't expect to find some textbook that's going for $95 online. But that doesn't mean you won't find good books -- e.g. a complete ex-library set of Anthony Powell for $12. The collectibles section had lots of intriguing books, not exorbitantly priced. read more

This is not the place to go looking for a specific title (unless it's pretty mass-market). If, on the other hand, you don't mind browsing through a genre and grabbing some interesting looking titles for a couple of bucks (for the hardback), then beat a path to their door! We visit here just about every week, usually leave with an armload of books, and never spend than more than $20. Usually a lot less. One dollar paperbacks, two dollar hard backs, and the Discount Rack is 50% off (you do the math). Nothing like walking up to the counter with an armload of hardback books and a ten dollar bill and walking away with change! Fair warning though, they have very limited hours (thu-sun I think), so double check before you go, just to be sure. This place is a hidden gem! I stumbled upon it when looking for a place to donate some old reads and movies, and boy am I glad I did. Donating is a breeze and I felt good about it because the proceeds from the sale of my items goes directly to the Austin Public Libraries. On top of that, I took a whirl through the store and picked up 4 books for $5. You read that right...paperbacks are $1 and hardbacks are $2. The prices cannot be beat. This place blew my mind. I am a used stuff junkie, and I don't mind getting a little grimy for cheap things. I've noticed that there's usually a tradeoff: the better the prices, the more one has to go through to find the things one might want. Recycled Reads is a wonderful exception to this rule. This store is impeccably curated! The books are lovingly sorted into categories, just like a library or a pricier used bookstore. The surprise is that almost all of them are two dollars or less! Hardcovers are $2, paperbacks are $1. There were some cabinets near the counter with premium books for higher prices, but even those seemed reasonably priced. There were a lot of records for $1 each, but I'm a vinyl hoarder and I was scared to even look through them. They even had laserdiscs for $3 each, if that's your thing. The hours are super limited; they are only open 12-6 Th-Sun. It's definitely worth making time to go. The best part is, the little money you do spend goes to support the public library! read more

I have been going to recycled reads weekly for a couple of months now. Although it is cheap and well organized the scanners have taken over which makes for an unpleasant shopping experience. Some of the things that I noticed on my last trip: *the constant beeping and talking of the many different scanning machines all throughout the store. *scanners having stacks and stacks of books piled up in their area to go through *scanners hovering around you while you are trying to look at books--it is like they are afraid you are going to get something valuable *after looking at several different books the scanner then quickly grabs it to scan--when it is not worth anything they then put the book anywhere put its place on the shelf *one of the volunteers coming out of the back with a stack of books--going up to a scanner saying I thought these might be worth something so I pulled them for you *a lady shouting from her seat that the internet was not working--she never got up just sat there shouting the internet doesnt work, the connection failed, is wireless working, then finally shouting it is working now I don't have a problem with scanners who are respectful of others, but these people seem to have taken over this store. They make a mess and it seems they have the workers there wrapped around their fingers. When I brought up my concern to the lady checking me out she was very rude to me--she quickly told me it was noted and was just ugly the remainder of my transaction--she was ready to let me walk out without even offering me a bag for the 40 or so books that I bought--when I asked her for a bag once again she was just flat annoyed that I would bother her again. I am so disappointed in what should be an awesome place to get books. read more

I agree with most of the reviewers here: inexpensive books for a good public cause. But I get the idea that they set the hours it's open by throwing a bunch of numbers up in the air and seeing where they land. If you work 8-5, you can only go to this store Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday. Generally speaking if you're going to be open different hours on different days, you want something that will be sticking in people's minds. If I'm over on N. Lamar some Tuesday afternoon and want to buy a book, unless I have extra time, I'll probably go to Half Price because there's not an obvious rhyme or reason to these hours. read more

A bargain hunter/book lover's paradise. As others have said this book store is neatly organized (like a library...) and has a decent selection of very cheap reads. Not necessarily a great place for collectors, but as a casual reader I found more then enough to keep me occupied, all at $1 or $2 a pop. this is kind of like the library, but better! you go in, pick out your books, pay just a buck or two (or sometimes less) for each, and keep them as long as you like with no threat of nasty grams if you forget to return them! when you are done with them you can keep them or even just give them back! :) i picked up several near perfect condition books that were on my list, and a couple that weren't. 6 books, $10. awesome deal. *and* i was helping out the library, which is even better. am also with davonne - i will be donating my books back to them after reading, as well as a stack of cd's that i could probably get a couple bucks for at one of the resale places, because i know really, taking them in and going through the process of selling them is not usually worth the pittance i get in return (and the store turns around and sells it for 5x or more what they give me). i'd rather these guys make a dollar or two on it and someone else get an awesome deal. for you collector sorts, they also have a bunch of manga and other comics. i didn't dig deep, but i did recognize some of the titles and characters... there is also a pretty large children's section - everything from toddler storybooks to middle-school aged fiction. give yourself an hour or so and go in and get yourself a stack for summer reading! read more

Why oh why oh why is this in Austin and not right by my house in Seattle?? I LOVE this place. I was in Austin visiting a friend and actually made two trips in a week to Recycled Reads. I ended up taking 8 books home with me. The books are mostly in great condition, but even if they're a little worn, you're only paying $1 for paperbacks and $2 for hardbacks! Most of the selection is from the public library, so you know they will always have a good collection, a wide variety and new stuff every day. They accept and sell: Vinyl, VHS, DVD, one or two Blu Rays, cassettes, audio books, comic books, graphic novels, many languages including a large selection in Spanish, Korean, Chinese, and Vietnamese (media, literature, and kids' books), maps, coloring books, some computer games, absolutely anything but magazines. When I found out they were books donated from the Austin Public Libraries that made the offer even more tempting. My fiancé and I are both HUGE book lovers and our wedding has a vintage book and library theme. I had been hunting around for a good place to buy vintage books and I hit the jackpot at Recycled Reads. I walked in and saw the vintage book selection, but felt they were a little too nice for our purposes. So I explained what I was looking for to the staff and next thing you know I'm being taken to a back room with tons of vintage readers digest condensed books with GORGEOUS covers! They gave me a box and said I could have as many as would fit for $10. I came away with 18 lovely lovely books that are going to look amazing at our wedding. Most of them are still in good condition, and man, they're cheap - $1 paperbacks and $2 hardbacks. They've also got CDs & DVDs, and a big children's section. There is no better store to find used books in Austin if you're looking for a great value. Everything here has been taken care of well and had been removed from the Austin library system for final sale. Hardbacks go for $2, soft covers for $1 and kids books for 50 cents. All the books are well sorted and easy to access and look over in their ultra comfortable chairs. They also stock a small selection of VHS, computer games and vinyl. They also host free readings, craft days and other events on site. The staff is very friendly and easy to locate. read more

I love this spot! Everything is very nicely organized by genre and alphabetical by author. Prices are great too, 2$ for hardbacks and 1$ for paperbacks. Children's books are 50 cents each. They have a little book book area for the kids that my daughter really enjoyed. There is truly something for everyone here. They accept checks and credit cards too and the proceeds go to the Austin public library. I spent 15.50 today and I got 6 practically new hardbacks and 4 paperbacks. The only downside to me is that many of the books are library discards and I'm kind of a freak about the condition of my books. I don't like to have those library stickers on there. Now of course I can't really complain about that because this is the austin public libraries used book store so what can you expect? But even if you are a book snob like me you can still dig through and find lots of donated treasures. read more

I really hate to review this place. I don't want anyone to know about it, just be my little secret. It is awesome! Paperbacks, $1. Hardcovers $2. Other stuff, Awesome. I try to go in about once a month, and make my time very very limited. I could stay here all day, have found books that have been on my list for literally years and there they are, just waiting for me. Some are in "older' condition, some almost new and recent publications. The clerks are always very helpful. Last time I went in, they had a slug of new kids books. I gave them a $ donation, and they said they would select the books for me and even get them to Blue/Brown/Red Santa for me. How good is that?! read more
