Great Breakfast Spot! I'll start by admitting--I'm not usually a breakfast person. I like it fine, but I'd often rather wait until lunch to start eating for the day. We stopped here on our way back to Tulsa from Branson, and I'm so glad we did! My son had the pancake platter, which he absolutely loved. But the real star? The breakfast sliders. Oh my goodness--these are the BEST breakfast sandwiches I've ever had. The bread is perfect--fluffy on the inside, slightly crispy on the outside. I chose the sausage (bacon and ham are also options), and it was delicious. The eggs were perfectly cooked, and the cheese paired beautifully. You get two sliders per plate and can choose your side bread item--I went with the house potatoes, which were seasoned perfectly and had the same delightful fluffy-yet-crispy texture as the bread. I could only eat one slider myself and brought the other home for my husband--he texted me the next morning saying it was just as amazing. Our waitress (I'm sorry I forgot her name!) was so kind and welcoming. The place is small and charmingly decorated, adding to the cozy vibe. All in all, we had the best breakfast. My Fiance had been here before but this was my first time. Adorable building and decor. We were seated immediately and waited on by Olivia; who was a wonderful server with excellent customer attention and giving customer space balance. The food was delicious as well. My fiance got the Philly with fries and I got the open face hot beef with mashed potatoes. Excellent sized portions for the price and it was just a lovely relaxing experience overall. Really good breakfast. I had the veggie omelette and my wife had the two egg breakfast with some really tasty link sausages. I included the biscuit and gravy with mine, and both included a generous portion of hash browns. Our waitress, Olivia was super friendly and attentive. We stopped here while driving through based on its continuous 4/5 star rating on multiple review sites. It took two hours for two of us to have breakfast. Waitress promptly got our order in, but the kitchen was slow. Our silverware came after our food, they refilled my husbands coffee once (in 2 hours) and the creamer arrived 10 minutes after the coffee did. There was food all over the floor around our table, a dead fly in the creamer bowl and a dead spider on the wall next to my seat, it didn't feel like they deep clean often. I'm a little torn between 3 and 4 stars here. It's an old barn and the decor definitely fits the name and building. Our family actually stopped in on our way to DC. We wanted to make a pit stop for lunch and potty breaks & happened to find this spot. They seem to be well known for their bakery but alas, we decided to keep our intake light today so other than how amazing it looks, I can't comment further. Both my wife and I ordered a grilled chicken salad. The chicken was seasoned and cooked well but it was small pieces (kinda like big "crumbles") on the bed of lettuce with three slices of tomato, three slices of cucumber and a sprinkle of cheese. The salad tasted good. The only thing I would change is the amount of chicken on it. I wish it had a bit more chicken and the whole salad was worth more like $6.99 instead of $8.99. However, I can't complain about the taste. We enjoyed it. For my kids, I got a Red Barn wrap. It's turkey, bacon, tomato, avocado, lettuce and cheese in a spinach tortilla wrap. It supposedly had a spicy cream cheese sauce. We didn't notice the avocado, lettuce was wilted and the sauce tasted more like mayo BUT it tasted great! Kids loved it and we tasted it too so we can't complain. It came with a choice of a side and we picked green beans. The green beans looked yummy with bacon but it was very salty to where none of us ate it. Our oldest had some tummy issues so we asked for plain toast with no butter, etc as a side. It came but looked very greasy so we sent it back. They were nice to remake it for us. Our kids rarely eat white toast so she commented that it's the best bread she's had. That's the difference between wheat and white. We waited awhile for our food. I wish they had brought our food together instead of us having to wait for our kids to be served before we could begin eating. Overall, the food was good and the bathrooms were clean so we thought it was a great stop for our trip. This place is delicious! It is homey and cute when you walk in, and everyone is so friendly. It's small town friendly and home cooked meals that make this place so great (plus the amazing assortment of desserts). My husband and I came here after driving back from Fayetteville, and I was not disappointed. I ordered the large biscuits & gravy and my husband ordered the Frisco melt and sweet potato fries. We split a slice of chocolate cream pie. We ate a ton of food and walked out of there with $20.00 plus tip for a tab. I wish I had gotten something a little more exciting (like the chocolate chip chocolate pancakes) but I was still happy. The fresco melt was made with really good meat and it made a huge difference. I love this place but won't eat here very often for the fact that I'm never in Mt. Vernon. But if you are in the area, you must check this place out! You won't regret it. read more

We like to eat here whenever we are in the area. What we didn't realize is it's been sold and there are new owners. I did notice the pies weren't by the door, but thought maybe they moved them. The food was good and service excellent, but the only reason we go here is for the pies. They do have a few deserts, but nothing like the home made pies before. Visited Saturday around noon and we all thought the buffet was a good value for the price. It included a salad bar, soup bar, the regular buffet and a dessert bar that had cobblers, bread pudding and ice cream. My dad was happy to see they had thick cornbread and ham & beans, as well. Excellent food, poor service. In town, staying the weekend for a local event at the Longhorn Arena. I have reviewed this place once before, and gave a 5 STAR review! Called a to-go order in, got the pass around, and then before a waitress took my order, heard her state " ugh, we ain't got shit", took my order, seemed like I was wasting her time and was pretty rude on the phone. Once arriving to this establishment, tables waiting to be seated and other tables needing cleared and cleaned. Staff seems disorganized and kind of short with customers. Paid for my meal and reminded the waitress of the dessert I had ordered. I received my pie with a long sigh, and no "thanks, come again." My husband saw a sign for Red Barn as we were starting off day 3 of our cross country road trip. We pulled in for breakfast, and absolutely loved everything about it. We are driving with a trailer attached to our car, so we were pleased to see their large lot in the back with plenty of room for us. My husband, brother and I walked in the back door into the bakery and were immediately met by the smell of fresh baked cinnamon rolls. Our waitress asked us to sit where we liked, and promptly brought us drinks. We all ordered from the menu, and while waiting for our food to arrive, realized we should have just gone with the breakfast buffet. All of the locals who were eating there seemed hip to this, and were returning to their tables with plates heaping with delicious food. We forgot our envy as soon as our own food came. This is what came to the table: pancakes, French toast, bisquits and gravy, scrambled eggs, hash brown, sausage and bacon. ALL OF IT, yes, all of it, was amazing. The bacon was glorious. A smudge salty but everything else about it was so amazing that the saltiness just added to it. The service was great too. It was only when we went to pay that we saw the desserts by the front door. Cinnamon rolls the size of your head, beautiful pies... We were too stuffed for anything like that, but we did grab a peanut brittle. Also, CHEAP PRICES. I'm sold. We stayed the night in Mt. Vernon. Not being from the area and never having been in the area we asked the Motel clerk where she recommended to eat. She said this was this was the best place in town. When we got there we found a place that looked small form the outside but inside it was much larger. In the area we set most of the tables had not been cleaned. This caused some reservation but we found a table that was clean and seated ourselves as we had been told as we entered. Turned out the cashier and two waiters had not showed to work that day so everyone was trying to cover those positions. This slowed down service but this is easy to over look because the food was simply fantastic. I got the pork chops, which came with green beans, bake potato, and a roll. The pork chops were large, the green beans were not from a can, not the Blue Lake that is not fit to eat but fresh green beans. This may of been the best part of the meal. They were excellent. Be sure to get the green beans if you go there. They also have a bakery and served many kinds of cakes, pies, cobblers. My wife got the Goose Berry Cobbler which we took back to the room and ate it as a snack later that night. She said it was very good. In you are in the area, passing through the area and it is near a meal time, i would encourage you to stop and enjoy good home cooking. read more

Visiting Mt Vernon for a volleyball tourney and we ate here and were very happy with our meals! I had the country fried steak with green beans and mashed potatoes and I really enjoyed it. I ordered my gravy on the side (as I normally do) which I was glad because it was a sausage base and thought it took away from the steak when I did dip it. The green beans were AMAZING!! Home cooking to the nth degree. The meatloaf was savory with an excellent brown gravy. The hot pork sandwich was seasoned very well and the serving size was over the top. Dessert was coconut cream pie with a superb flaky crust and a tasty creamy filling. No complaints from anyone in our party except for being too full. I appreciate they seem to be understaffed, but this experience was ridiculous and horrible. Without exaggeration, we sat for over 1 hour waiting on our food. There were 2 large tables, but it was not full. We ended up walking out extremely upset and hungry. The owner needs to hire more staff IMMEDIATELY, figure out what the problems are with the existing staff, Or limit the amount of people you were letting in your restaurant. We were seated immediately and got a pleasant reception, it's not like this place was so full they were struggling with capacity. Even a moderate staff should be able to handle it. read more
