This is the epitome of the neighborhood joint. It feels like it's been there forever, the patrons know all the staff, and strangers are welcomed. I was on a first date so I had enough awkwardness going on already, it was nice to be greeted warmly. :-) Tuesday nights seem to be a good night to drop in. It was very quiet and meatloaf night. We were there for the burgers. I had the "Arlington burger" which was fantastic and gloriously messy. Nice night option for food Was looking for a place to grab some food after work and stumbled upon a place that I pass all the time, but had never gone to. Red Door is about 2 minute's drive from me yet I had never even considered going there (not sure why). I called in a carryout order and the person on the phone was good about making sure everything was right before disconnecting. By the time I arrived the food was ready so I grabbed it and went home to try it out. I had the Arlington Burger (bacon, barbeque sauce, cheddar cheese) and switched to sweet potato fries instead of the usual fries. I am not a fan of the upcharge for switching: it is 2.50 to change to sweet potato fries even though both fry selections are listed as the same price as side dishes. Anyways the sweet potato fries were very good, the exact same kind that they have at Tilted Kilt. The burger was a good representation of a bbq bacon burger. The bbq was the star and everything else fell in line as it should. This experience is a definite 3.5 stars if I could list as such. read more

We visited Red Door Tavern because we had a BOGO coupon for the sandwiches and it's only a few blocks from our apartment. We walked in and surprisingly it was completely packed in the dining area. We sat at a small table in the bar and the bartender took care of us. Besides being super friendly, we received our food very quickly. They even have free popcorn!! My husband got the chicken parm sandwich and I ordered the roast beef slider sandwiches. Both were great and came with fries. We also ordered alcohol and a coffee. Our total WITH the BOGO coupon, was still around $29 which I thought was a bit expensive. Overall, it was okay but I don't see us returning super soon. read more

The Red Door Tavern has been around for almost 50 years. I'm a history nerd, and so I felt compelled to check it out. Plus, I heard they had tater tots. I couldn't resist. Does that make me a tater tot nerd? The menu is filled with sandwiches, burgers and some entrees. Several of the sandwiches are served on pretzel bread. Sadly, it was just a bun in a twisted pattern -- nothing particularly pretzel-y about it. It was a little disappointing. The ham and cheese that came on the bun was good, though. Sandwiches came with steak fries. Yum. The burgers are flavorful, juicy and cooked to order. The ambiance is a bit more inviting inside than out. Despite the crust exterior, the walls inside are covered with the type of mildly historic kitsch that chain places like Max & Erma's copied years ago. And the tots were great! read more

I went in on a Sunday evening. A server and bartender were working now the entire floor themselves, attentively but rather slowly. I got the sense that the server was overwhelmed, but that's probably because she had finals the following week. . . The burger was good, if spice less. Condiments were dull, and the thick cut fries were just as run-of-the-mill. The overall ambiance is that of an old school pub with grub; comfortable enough and the service was good. But things went downhill right from beverage. The iced tea tasted more like the metal container it was stored in, as if it had been in there for days. We ordered a corned beef Rueben with onion rings and a turkey Rueben with tator tots. The onion rings were mushy! How do you fry something and it come out mushy? I was expecting the turkey Rueben to be like a regular Rueben with turkey being the only difference. But it had cole slaw instead of kraut, which was fine for me but we were going to share and my SO doesn't like slaw. And I've pulled tator tots out of my oven that were way better than the bland fillers that showed up on my plate. And even the ketchup didn't help. Went to the bathroom before we left. Had I done this on the way in, we would've left immediately. Judging from the cobwebs by the mirror and the amount of dust on the decorative moulding on the wall, cleanliness is not much of a priority. Thankfully, I had a $10 coupon. read more

Red Door Tavern is in the building hugging close 5th Avenue just north of Grandview Heights. It has a decidedly New Englandish appeal, at least how New England exists in the zeitgeist; it has dark red woodwork, Paul Revere lantern light fixtures, revolutionary war musket tacked on the long ceiling beams, a Cheers like semi-octagon bar, and one large landscape painting of a Puritan inspired village. One feels like it would be the place for Cape Code lobster or sizzling crab legs, but is a nice dive bar attracting the in-and-outs of 5th by Northwest locals. Said to be the oldest institution in the area, Red Door is known for food. Smaller than it looks from the outside, it has a cozy booth dominated dinning room and a comfortable bar. It was my first time trying it out after driving by it for 20-years. In the mood for hamburger, I ordered one with mushrooms. The mushrooms were juicy and sautéed perfectly. Yum. It came with thick fries that bordered on potato wedges and were equally scrumptious. The bugger, though, was less so; a bit overcooked, it lacked anything more than a homemade patty. It was more than eatable, but relatively, I rank it in the bottom half in the city of hamburger giants. Note though friends have had other choices that they say better represents Red Door, as well as Gold Elite Mike G who suggests Twisted Eagles, a ham and Swiss cheese melt. So don't let my one meal represent the quality of other choices; can't blame them for wilting under the shadow of Thurman's, Flip Side, Rossi, ect. Still, this place is worth a good rating. It seemed toned down and easy going. A place for chatting and socializing. The music at the right volume to catalyze conversation but not overbearing, the dual TV with games ( not sure if the featuring of Boston sports was purposely done) were kept down. Though close quarters mean bumping into patrons headed for the restroom if you sit on the side by the passway, though the social comfort of the place neutralizes that slight annoyance. Parking may be a problem. They do have a small lot out back but that can fill during rushes. The side street is cramped with parked vehicles on either side up towards King. If you don't mind a short walk, you may also find a spot in the other side streets parallel to it. Nice place to spend a low key weekend evening. read more

I hadn't been here in years since it was sold to the present owners. My hubby and I decided we needed to make a revisit. It was lunchtime and it was so sunny and gorgeous out we sat out on the patio. We were immediately greeted by our server and she gave us menus promptly and she took our lunch orders. I opted for the hit Italian sub with potato chips and hubby got the Bobcat burger with chips. We both also got iced teas with lemon. Both of our sandwiches were huge. My sub had ham pepperoni capicola lettuce tomato onion banana peppers mayo pepper jack and Italian dressing on a nicely toasted Italian bun. It was so huge I couldn't eat half of it and we packed up the other half for hubby to eat later. His burger was huge too not sure how he got his mouth around it. It had cheese lettuce tomato and onion on an unremarkable bun. Server did check back with us a couple of times to see if we liked our order and if I needed a refill. I'm going to have to make a return to try something else and maybe bump up my review. read more

"Please Seat Yourself" reads the sign as you walk in the front door. Sadly that hands off approach seems to extend to all aspects of their service. After 10 minutes of trying to flag down a server to even be greeted and be given menus, we gave up and went elsewhere. Doubt we'll be back. The Red Door is a dated, unassuming bar/restaurant with surprisingly good food. A breaded chicken cutlet with bacon may not be the most inventive sandwich known to man, but the execution is flawless. Crab cakes are served in the crab shell, as if to say, "NOT FROM A CAN!" Clientele includes eightysomethings having pints of Guiness. I don't know that I would hang out at the Red Door for any extended period of time, but I will definitely be back for dinner once in a while. read more

I went here tonight with a friend because I had a BOGO coupon from the Entertainment Book. I hadn't been here in a long time, but remembered liking the patio, so I thought it was worth returning. Only one server was working tonight (it was a Sunday, maybe someone else called in sick?) but we sat for 15 minutes before getting a menu, and we had to flag the waitress down. I had to ask twice for her to bring 1000 island dressing. I got the Pelican sandwich, which I think another reviewer raved about--it was very bland. If I were to go back, I would get a burger, based on other reviewers' suggestions, but I don't see me initiating a return visit. read more

So we used to frequent this place quite a bit because we love the atmosphere, location, and the food. We stopped going altogether because of the service. The last 3 or 4 times we were there, the service was absolutely terrible. The manager was notified once of these times and was very unapologetic about what had happened. We were with a large group of folks one night and it took over an hour to get our food and once we did receive it, it was wrong. In the meantime, the server never came out to apologize or ask if we needed drink refills. It just seems like every time we were there, it was something. It was always a bother and we never just got decent service. I really am hoping I can convince the hubby to go back sometime in the future in the hopes that service has gotten better because I really do like the place! read more

I used to really like eating here but then that was several years ago before new management. Three of us went and were quite disappointed to find that the menu is mainly sandwiches and burgers. We wanted dinners. We ordered the special, Chicken and broccoli alfredo. Three customers arrived after we did, two tables of two and one table of three. They ordered burgers and got their food right away. We ordered specials and waited nearly forty minutes. Their wait staff was at their tables frequently and ours showed up when it was convenient for her. She was nice but had such a heavy accent we could barely understand what she said. The alfredo was awful, thin, runny and close to flavorless, the chicken so overdone it was difficult to chew and didn't seem to have been spiced at all. The burgers looked good and the onion rings looked fantastic but since I didn't have them I can't judge the flavor. If you like a good burger place with a bar you'll probably like this place but it has officially been removed from my personal list of favorite places to eat. read more

Lunch date with my husband..I've been years ago, his first visit. We started with an appetizer and two sandwiches. The Red Door Knocker Chicken Nachos absolutely blew us away! It was an excellent choice! Our server was delightful and we had such a nice meal. Portion sizes were generous and for a weekday lunch we were in and out in a very reasonable time. Tough call on how many stars to give this place. Kinda want to give it like 2 because it is so grimy but i just have so much fun here i have to say 3 . Used to come here when i was in high school and not sayin' how long ago but it's been a while. Lol. Anyway, menus and walls are grubby.Don't think they have been wiped down in a loong time. Bathroom definitely needs update. maybe fix the locks on the stalls. Service is friendly and pretty quick. The rueben eggrolls are really tasty and the potato skins are good, Mushrooms i think would be awesome except they have been about a minute too long in the deep fryer both times we have had them. $3 beers at happy hour which is always a good deal! Worst restaurant experience. Took forever to be acknowledged. Then she forgot a drink. She never came back to take our order after waiting 20 minutes. Had to track someone down to take our order and then she was acting like we were a bother! Food finally came and it was horrible. My husband had a fish sandwich with a stale bun n wilted lettuce. I ordered the Twisted Pelican, which was voted one of the top 30 sandwiches in Columbus. My hopes were high for this grilled turkey sandwich on a twisted pretzel bun. When it came out it was grilled turkey deli meat on a croissant. The sandwich was not bad, but not at all what I expected, and definitely not a top 30 sandwich anywhere. The ambiance is excellent for an old school dive bar, and the beer list was good. I was there for lunch during training for work, so I didn't have a beer. The place was considered legendary then- particularly when "when Ruth was baking " ( old-timer so know what that means- good pies!) . But that was the past. Unfortunately many reviewers are the Red Door by what it used to be. It will never be that again. The important question is how good is the restaurant now. Most people that come here are regulars, so I've definitely felt like I've been stared at a few times when I enter. It doesn't get too uncomfortable because you'll soon feel like one of them. Drinks are huge and fair-priced. They have a good selection of brews. But the main thing that I loved about this place was...the Twisted Pelican sandwich. Seriously, all sandwiches should be made on pretzel buns. There's a surprising amount of room at the Red Door and you can reserve the party room for events. The parking lot is a bit small and you may have to park on the street, but I've never had problems. read more

Stopped by here for some lunch with my son. He had some spaghetti which looked pretty over cooked and watery, but my salad was pretty decent and my burger was good. The service was good, but we were just about the only people there and we ate at the bar. Altogether I'd say this is your average bar with a little better than average bar food. Red Door is our go-to for a low-key hangout. The food here is darned good - their Pelican sandwich was once a rarity in the city - a sandwich on a pretzel bun. Not unique now, but still one of the best. Beer is always ice-cold and staff are friendly. I think we've been here at every time o'day - early on a Sunday, in the Friday crush, late-late Saturday (for pie!) and about 5:30 on any other day of the week.
