I ordered Fire Phoenix Special Roll which has King crab meat, mango, cucumber, avocado inside topped with assorted fish, flame-torched with eel sauce, and Korean hot sauce. Soy paper wrapped. Also a Vegetable Roll, a Volcano Roll, a Philadelphia Roll. and 2 pieces of Salmon (sake) nigiri. Sounds great, doesn't it? All I can say is that I have had gas station sushi that was better than this. And I have also had gas station sushi that this tasted as bad as. The rice on rolls tasted terrible, like it was old, no worse than old, it tasted 'off' . The sake nigiri was old. It smelled fishy and It tasted fishy and it was soft and mushy, I spit out the one bite I took. Everything smelled fishy-old. But we make due... thanks to gotta try spots like this. I ordered from Red Ginger one snowy Saturday for delivery, via CHOMP. The order was correct, on time and well executed. While I'm not sure I'd get the Coralville Roll again, personally. I did think the Shrimp Tempura Roll was divine. Their house salad and clear soup really hit the spot, as well. My kids inhaled their veggies (aka edamame) as well as chicken with noodles and rangoons. All in all, Red Ginger is a solid sushi option in the area. When you pick three stars it doesn't help the person reading the review. Oh great. I can go to an average restaurant. Well. I chose three stars. Not because this restaurant was average but because the average of the two dishes we ate was three stars. The sushi was five stars. The Ramen was one star. Hence...3 stars. What can I say? I like math. Sorry. Not sorry. Had we just gotten the Soho roll and spicy tuna roll, this would be a five star review explaining that this sushi was some of the best we have had in the area. That soho roll was absolutely amazing! I am still thinking about it. However, I also chose to try the Ramen. Granted, the only Ramen I have ever had was your powdered stuff that cost $.75 and you add hot water to it. But, damn, that $.75 package of Ramen had more flavor than the $14 bowl of Ramen I got here. The broth had very little flavor. The vegetables and other ingredients in the bowl were also less than flavorful. Honestly, I felt like I spent $14 on a watered down bowl of broth. I finished about three force of the bowl and even though I was not remotely full, I just didn't want anymore of this. We actually ended up having a second dinner at a different restaurant because neither one of us was full. Sure, second dinner is always great but when you are dropping $50 on first dinner, having to go out and buy another dinner because your first dinner wasn't all that great, sucks. Basically, if you go here, stick to the sushi. The Ramen was a waste of money and lack of flavor. I come here at least once a month. I have only ordered take out from this location. I place my order over the phone & in 15-25 minutes it's ready to go. They're usually pretty good about getting my order right but there was 1 time they gave me the wrong item. The incorrect item ended up being delicious, so didn't really care too much. Place is very clean. I consider it the best sushi place in Coralville/Iowa City/Cedar Rapids area. They have a huge menu of different rolls you can try. Each roll is good & the sushi chef is very very good at making them. They know their stuff & I keep coming back. I would recommend the Tuna Tataki. My first time trying their food. We went on a Friday night around 7:30 after the dinner rush had died down. There were a few other diners. We were seated right away and drink orders were taken. I liked the variety of rolls. They also had non-sushi options like ramen, teriyaki and other items you expect from a Japanese restaurant. We started with a jalapeño appetizer that was essentially a fried popper without bacon and drizzled with eel sauce and spicy mayo. The dish wasn't spicy at all but had great flavor. I got the pink panther roll and I was a little disappointed that the filling was a little skimpy but I was glad the rice wasn't too thick. My dining partner got the pork katsu and really enjoyed the flavors. It came with a side of white rice. Overall, glad I gave them a try and will return and try more sushi items. read more

I enjoy the quiet ambiance of this restaurant. The food has always been decent. I'm pretty sure the green tea is Genmaicha--it has that essenec of brunt rice that adds tons of flavor. On this visit, I only had a simple roll, the spicy shrimp w/cucumber. It also contained a little tobiko. This roll was well constructed and I have no complaint. The gyoza were fried slightly crisp, which I prefer. However, some people prefer the steamed variety, or the ones that are only lightly browned on the outside. Just a heads-up. I also had a bowl of the onion soup. Nicely flavored broth--not salty at all. Also contains mushrooms and scallions. All that would be good and seems like this would be higher than a 3-star rating. However... Service wasn't exactly attentive at the start of this visit. It took at least ten minutes for someone to come over and take our order for drinks. Fortunately, the long wait gave us plenty of time to figure out what we wanted to eat. I typically go to this restaurant with a person of non-Asian decent. This location has a lot of potential. 1. The restaurant interior is much nicer than I thought it would be! Very spacious and clean. Looks like a nice date place. 2. Large menu selection. Various appetizers, salads, soups, ramen, sushi rolls etc. It was hard to know where to begin but it was nice to have some options. 3. Soup and salad to start (may have came with lunch special?). Soup was miso soup with tofu. Salad was light and refreshing, but a bit watery. Lunch Bento - You can chose 1 thing from each lettered category (A, B, C, D). I got the shumai, fried rice, spicy crab roll, and chicken teriyaki. This comes on a rather large plate. Food was pretty good and it was nice to have some variety. Volcano Roll - I was torn between getting the regular volcano roll and the super volcano roll. I decided to test out the waters first. This was a decent roll, but had a bit too much cream cheese for my liking. I just popped out some of it an it tasted fine. Overall this is a pretty decent place to grab some lunch. Red Ginger has become one of my staples in Iowa City since we discovered it a year ago. Fresh yellowtail, tuna, and salmon? Check. Well-made rolls containing every variety of fish you could want? Yep. Unagi don that doesn't make me laugh/cry and question why the heck this Californian is living in the Midwest? Yes. Options for the non-raw-fish-eater? Definitely. It's Iowa City, after all. It's the ONLY place in the area that has passable ramen. It's their version of tonkotsu, with generous tender pork belly slices and broth halfway between pork bone and shoyu. It can be a little bland at times (and what's bok choy doing in ramen?) but I've gotten it maybe 10 times already out of sheer desperation. On a side note, one of my future goals is to petition for a specialty ramen restaurant to open in Iowa City because I wholeheartedly believe it will improve everyone's lives exponentially. This is my first visit to a restaurant with this type of cuisine. I was super impressed and would definitely come back if I lived closer. The waitress/hostess was very attentive and friendly. Definitely 5 star service. I was seated immediately. There were several seats available at 6:30 on a Monday night. I would say the restaurant was 1/2 full. I really wanted to try the sushi but I've never had sushi before and had no idea what to order. So I went with safe choices. I ordered a red ginger pear mojito as a cocktail. It was so good. It was $6.95. I ordered the shumai for appetizer which is shrimp and veggie dumplings. I ordered pork belly ramen for my main coarse. With my meal I got a salad. It was ice burg lettuce, cucumbers and a light and refreshing yellow dressing that I've never had anything like it before. But it was really good. I can't even figure out how to describe the taste. The shumai dumplings were good. They didn't have much texture. I probably looked like a fool with my chopsticks because I don't know how to use them. So I stabbed them and that worked. Loved the pork belly ramen. The broth was so flavorful. The pork belly added just the right flavor and texture without being overwhelming. I ate almost the entire bowl. Excellent. We had the "Christmas tree", "pinky lady", and the "red ginger". All num num in the tum tum!! The "calamari" was not what we usually get. It's more of a tempura sampler but still very good. She even got my order wrong, well just the wrong amount. When I told her that I order a certain amount, she seemed like she didn't want to be bothered. Overall, it wasn't a good service. Ramen: the sign in the front says "Sushi. Teriyaki. Ramen", in which I believe that their ramen should be good since it's their highlight. I'm going to start by say that this is not ramen. The broth does not resemble anything like ramen. I'm not going to say that they must make the exact same Ramen that Japan had, but the soup tasted like it was from another part of Asia. The noodle was alright, the egg wasn't have half-boiled and why is there celery in the ramen (First time I had that). I ordered the ramen with roasted pork belly, and it was actually pretty good. That's why I left a 2 star instead of 1. Tempura: The batter was too thick. It should be lighter. It's more like Ebi Furai, then Ebi tempura. And I just don't understand why broccoli is a part of tempura. The sauce tasted like soy sauce added water and a little bit of sake, not the right balance for me. read more

Let me just start with I was really skeptical to eat here since I heard some pretty bad things about their opening weekend. The good news, there's absolutely nothing to be skeptical about! If you haven't tried this place out yet, or you haven't gone back since their opening, now's the time you should! Despite the fact that it's in a strip mall, the interior of this place is really trendy and modern. Definitely someplace that would make a good date night -- nice big chairs, comfy booths, ambient lighting, attractive wall decor. Don't judge this book by its cover! Our server was excellent and attentive. Easily one of the best servers I've had dining out in the Iowa City/Coralville area. Wish we would have gotten her name to give a shoutout. On to the food, they have a huge sushi list! Lots of specialty rolls made it hard to decide what to order. I ended up getting the Super Tuna (spicy tuna and avocado topped with red and white tuna) and a salmon skin roll. The Super Tuna was good, but I wasn't too crazy about the salmon skin roll here which is unfortunate because that's usually one of my favorite rolls. I thought the sauce on top was too sweet and the roll needed something else besides just salmon skin and cucumber. They have a really good rice to fish ratio, but I felt like the rice was just a tad under cooked. The sushi here is a reasonable price too. You can get the basic rolls for under $5 and the specialty rolls in the $10-$12 range. While the sushi was a good price, I felt like some of their other items were a little spendy for what they were (looking at you, ramen) but I'd still like to try them eventually, especially since as far as I know this is the only other place you can get ramen around here besides 3 Sam. With Sushiya and now Red Ginger, we are finally getting some good sushi in the area and there's no reason to have to eat sub-par sushi downtown (granted, if you don't have a car and live on campus it might be difficult to get to Coralville or North Liberty.) Overall, I had an extremely positive experience eating at Red Ginger and I will definitely be back soon! read more

We visited Red Ginger at lunch during the grand opening. I expected a divey hole-in-the-wall, but it boasts a gorgeous interior. The food was delicious. I ordered a chicken teriyaki lunch bento with a salmon roll and gyoza, an order of maguro (tuna) nigiri, and tamagoyaki (egg) nigiri. Any items ordered off the lunch menu also come with a salad and miso soup. Everything was very reasonably priced, and the kitchen kept pace fairly well. The salad came out first, quickly followed by the miso. The salad was very good, with a dressing good enough that my dining companion actually drank the rest from the bottom of the bowl. The miso, however, was a disappointment. It was fairly watered down, and there weren't many pieces in it. The bowl it was served in was beautiful, however. The sushi came out next, before we had even started on the soup. The tuna was a little underwhelming, but the sushi rice was honestly the best I've ever had. The tamago was delicious. It was a little sweeter than I'm used to, but still good. The bento came out last. So far as gyoza goes, I prefer to have mine steamed, but theirs was the best fried I've tasted. It wasn't at all oily, and it had a great crunch. The chicken teriyaki was fairly good. Mushroom haters be warned, however. They sneak some pretty big chunks in there. The salmon roll that came with the bento was absolutely scrumptious. It was easily the best thing I had while I was there. The bento also comes with fried rice. It has a good assortment of vegetables in it, but is a little heavy on onion. I loved it, but I know others sensitive to onion would not. TLDR: solid food great decor. I ordered the chicken katsu ramen which was okay. I usually expect the broth to be a little heartier. The noodles and meat and toppings were all fine. My dinner partner ordered tuna tataki which wasn't the greatest however her salmon sashimi was delicious. Still need to eat more at this place to get a better handle on the food. We were excited to see a place that serves ramen so prominently that they've included it on their storefront's sign. While traveling, we always make a point of seeking out the most-raved-about sushi and ramen shops, so yes it is true that we've set the bar high. But there's really no reason we can't get just as delicious of dishes here in Iowa as on the East or West coasts. Seafood can't be as fresh here, agreed, but beyond that the flavors were simply out of whack and there's no reason for that. I ordered the Shrimp Tempura Ramen and my husband ordered the Beef Ramen. They came with all the right ingredients and the correct proportions of each, but the broth (the most important ingredient if you ask any ramen guru) had a chalky taste to it. It was the kind of mouth-feel you get from box-made broths. Good ramen broth should be borderline impossible to stop eating because it's so damn good. I hope I'm wrong, but I left feeling like I had just paid $15 for a "dump and whisk" ramen broth. Not cool. Also worth noting, my husband and I mentioned upon first walking in, that there was an odd smell. Well, the men's restroom was out of commission and when I walked past it to get to the women's restroom, there was an extremely foul sewage smell coming from the area. It was additionally hard to enjoy my meal after realizing that what we were smelling, was raw sewage. We did order an Alaskan Roll as our appetizer and that was quite good. It's decent enough, it's not the best I've had but it'll do. The nigiri sushi each time didn't taste all that great, wasn't something I will try again.
