A super cute "winter chalet" style venue with amazing seafood and drinks! The winter patio is so well decorated and has industrial heaters to keep guests warm. Their entire "Botanical Bar" is very creative. We loved both of the drinks we got which were the blue butterfly and the hibiscus smoke. For food, the Saffron Seafood Stew is a must try. We devoured this dish! It had lobster, mussels, and vegetable, in a tomato based broth. The lobster roll and warm artichoke dip are both really good too. Give this place a try! I was visiting my friend at Harvard, and he took me to this place, because he knew how much I love oysters. We came here around 5pm, before their happy hour ends at 6pm. I loved this place. We sat in their bar, which had a really cozy feeling with a warm fireplace. I ordered one cocktail, which wasn't to my liking, but I was really impressed by how their oysters are not only cheap (2 for $1 during happy hour, limited one dozen per person) but still large and fresh. We also ordered lobster chowder, fish cake, and duck, which were all tasty (but frankly after eating more than one dozen of oyster I couldn't quite remember lol). The calamari appetizer didn't meet my expectation in size and flavor but it was still crunchy and something I'd order again. For a table of 3 or more it wouldn't be enough to share. The lobster carbonara was very flavorful, topped with mozzarella cheese and had a lobster claw. I would recommend this dish. The lobster roll and fries were average compared to the ones I've had. They acted as if they could not even seat us (empty restaurant) but finally did. We ordered oysters, and lobster rolls. The lobster rolls were extremely dry with no hint of butter whatsoever. The fries tonight tasted greasy and we left most of our meal untouched. The waitress scraped our plates then stacked them on the table in front of us - even my 18 year old son cringed. One of my family's favorite restaurants. Kind of a hidden gem. Phenomenal food and quaint, mostly open air, heated porch that seems to be open almost all year round. Cheap oysters in a nice outdoor deck. At Red House you get what you pay for. Depending on the time of day, you can get oysters for 50 cents or for a dollar each. The downside is that the oysters are sometimes tiny, sometimes gritty, and sometimes pretty badly shucked and damaged. On the upside, in the summer you can enjoy a lot of them with a drink in their outdoor seating. I also tried the lamb skewer and the charred cauliflower. Not bad. So disappointed in this restaruant. We came over the holiday weekend. The food is so overpriced for what you get.. We got a lobster roll, Pan seared scallops the shrimp appetizer and crab cakes. 4 tiny shrimp were $12 ( are you kidding me?) Chowder is $25?!?!??!?! The lobster roll also $25 was the tiniest one I have ever had and as others have said, it is so weird, stringy pieces of meat. I literally wish I sent it back and walked out!! We came when we come to Harvard to visit family but we will NEVER go back! Such a shame this place has gone down hill fast :-( read more

The table we chose (the hostess made us aware of this) was extremely slanted. It made grabbing and putting down drinks a little awkward and nervy but hey, we chose the table knowing the situation! Our waitress was phenomenal, kind and friendly! The margarita flight was delicious, and we should have stuck with margaritas for more of a fruity flavor as our second round of drinks were a little on the stronger side (not a bad thing). When it comes to their food I had the lobster carbonara. I felt as though the pancetta overwhelmed both the lobster and the pasta. Still, the dish had good flavor. Having been to the Red House on multiple occasions, I can say with confidence that it is just meh. When you go in you realize that it is quite literally built into a house - the inside has a really cozy, old time-y New England vibe to it. My favorite area is definitely the bar area, which has a crackling fireplace that's especially nice in the winter. They have the ridiculous oyster special - 50 cents a pop between noon and 6pm - which is how most people find out about this place. You definitely know they're cheap, though - they're shucked pretty poorly, with shell fragments all over the place, and the shells are for some reason pretty dirty. Quite a few of the poor little suckers get pretty mangled in the shucking process too. But for 50 cents there's not much to complain about. The rest of the menu is alright - nothing egregious but nothing really inspiring either. They have a good selection of lobster dishes when it's in season, but at pretty steep prices. Their drinks menu is pretty good, however. Solid joint if you want to hang out with some friends and grab a drink and oysters. read more

The four of us Came here for Mother's Day, and though the starters me really delicious (Brussels sprouts and coconut shrimp) the restaurant as a whole was wildly understaffed (specifically the kitchen/ back or house), had ZERO salmon, swordfish, octopus, clams, and lobster which is ridiculous for a seafood focused restaurant. On top of that our waiter (even though he was clearly doing the best he could given the circumstances) did not enter my boyfriends entree, and we only received it when the three of us finished our meals. A small gem in the heart of Harvard Square tucked away in a back alley, that can easily be missed. It is a small quaint restaurant we came about trying to find a place to eat on a busy Friday night for a party of two. We were warmly greeted and promptly seated next to a wood burning fireplace, very charming and inviting. We're served the fresh rosemary bread basket, followed by the lobster clam chowder and lamb chops. Both meals were prepared to perfection, healthy portions and delicate flavor. I was flipping between the lobster tacos and lobster fra diavolo deciding upon the latter which is lobster and linguine with a spicy red sauce. I mistakenly thought the lobster meat would be removed and mixed in with the sauce. I knew that was not the case when they handed me a bib and lobster cracker. The dish was huge with a cracked lobster on the bottom with the linguine piled on top. I managed to dig out and eat most of the lobster and maybe half of the pasta. I enjoyed the meal but was stuffed at this point and skipped dessert. Service was decent throughout the meal but several times my water glass was empty with no server in sight. read more

The host was an older man and he was completely overwhelmed and behaved like a combative teenager. He walked past our table and dropped menus onto it without acknowledging us. Our table was right by the door and we had to endure his rude behavior toward everyone who walked. He was panicky and short with anyone who didn't have a reservation. Aside from the panicked host, no server came to our table. My boyfriend had to grab a server who was walking by. No one came to check on us after we got our food. And no server brought us our check. Luckily, the bartender was courteous. He left the bar to bring us our drinks and when he saw that we had been sitting at our table with empty plates, he left the bar to ask if we wanted dessert. Upon arriving they let me know they were closing the kitchen in 20 minutes but did not take my order for 25 minutes. Two minutes later the owner or manager brought me my to go food again and I asked him again to keep it heated and he snapped at me. At this point I still had not received my meal for the table. I have been here on multiple occasions for the 1$ oysters with my girlfriend. If we come between 12-5 or 9-close the are 2 for 1$, you cant beat that!!! I've been to The Red House a bunch, always with a large group of classmates and always in the private room off to the side (it's one of my professor's favorite spots so whenever he is treating the group, we always end up here). I always have a good time and enjoy the food and great service, but The Red House has yet to wow me. For starters, you can't go wrong with the Mushroom Phyllo and Seared Scallops. The scallops are cooked well and nicely flavored. The phyllo is excellent. Plentiful mushrooms wrapped in a perfectly flaky phyllo. I've had the Lobster Fra Diavolo, Traditional Steamed Lobster, and Mediterranean Shellfish Stew. The Fra Diavolo tries to be good. It's supposed to be a little spicy but I've found it to be a bit on the bland side. More of a marina sauce. I always love steamed lobster so of course that's great, though it's just like any other steamed lobster you'd get in Boston. The shellfish stew is good! It has a nice broth and a good amount of seafood. I think the restaurant is a bit overpriced, but if you're looking for seafood in Harvard Square, The Red House is still a solid spot. read more

You can't beat $.50 oysters, you really can't but it would be amazing if they maybe rinsed them off first.There was so much sand, seaweed and shell bits that they were a bit unsavory. The shrimp cocktail special was also a draw. The lobster chowder was good, the meat itself seemed to be leg pieces though I can't imagine anyone picking the legs for chowder so I guess it's not readily identifiable.
