The vibes here are great. Small space inside but they do have some outdoor seating right outside the shop or they give you plastic cups you can take into the courtyard and drink as well. They have ~5 different kinds of each style of wine (white, orange, red, sparkling) and they let you try before you commit to a glass. As others have mentioned they are pricey though. I friggin love Rebel Rebel! It's an intimate wine bar with a huge selection of natural wines. Every time I go here the bartenders are super welcoming and helpful. I always end up trying a new wine or sticking to whatever I'm in the mood for. The wine bar also has snacks if you need something to eat. Review update - after three different experiences with Rebel Rebel, I'm just about done with them. From the attitude and pretentiousness, to the pricing - I will no longer be going. $52 last night for two small glasses of wine. I too like natural wine but this is just outrageous at this point. Automatic 20% service fee to boot, and the audacity to have a line to even add more tips even though there's that 20% fee already added automatically. Our waitress poured 100% sediment from the bottle of Borachio into my wife's glass to taste test the pour and when we hinted that this was kind of not great, she didn't blink an eye and just poured the full pour on top. Zero situational awareness and just the attitude. Unbelievable, especially considering it was a $20 pour. For these kinds of prices, I'd expect better service, bigger pours ,and a helluvah lot more. Other reviews have pointed out the same but I just don't believe that they have enough introspectiveness to care, which is a shame because their mission is cool and they could be a stellar spot. read more

I've been here 3 times in the last month or so! I love that they're open early so that I can go right after work to meet a friend. This is a very small wine bar in Bow Market. I haven't had a trouble getting a seat and you can even sit outside if you so choose. They have a great wine selection and will ask you what you're in the mood for. They'll let you taste until you find something you like. They genuinely want you to be happy with your wine selection. Keep in mind that they may have some things open that are not on the board, so you should definitely speak up and let them know what you want even if you're not sure if they have it. It's an oxymoron: how could some place so cool feel so inclusive? From the moment I saw this teeny tiny wine bar bursting with awesomeness, I was intimidated. But Rebel Rebel has made it their mission to create a welcoming and inclusive space, and they're absolutely delivering. I only had the chance to drink here in person a handful of times before Covid pushed everything to virtual, but each time was awesome. I should have taken notes on what I sipped, but maybe enjoying it there was part of what made it taste so perfect. A few seats inside and some space on the patio gives the space a super intimate vibe. The decor is trendy but so homey. It doesn't feel like the decorations were purchased for a Look, but that this is just the cool aesthetic that was born of the owner's passions. Once Covid pushed everything Virtual, Rebel Rebel adapted in spectacular fashion. You could order online for pickup at the walk-up window or opt for contact-free delivery. And best of all-- Margot took to Zoom for her awesome wine tasting classes. I've absolutely loved learning about natural wine with her. Like all of Rebel Rebel, there's not a drop of stuffiness or pretentiousness in the tastings. (While talking about the wine making process, she often uses highly technical terms like smoosh.) It just feels like a casual zoom with a friend (and 100 other people) who is really excited to talk about her favorite thing. In a sleeper hit, I think the Riesling class may have been my favorite. I really didn't think I liked Riesling (too sweet), but we walked through a really broad range across three bottles that showed the scope of what it could be, not just want you thought it was. I'm so grateful to Rebel Rebel for teaching me about the delicious wonders of natural wine. Writing this review is making me thirsty! read more

It makes me sad that I haven't been able to enjoy a glass of wine in Rebel Rebel's cozy space in months, but luckily there are still ample opportunities to drink their dope wines and support their business! They are essentially functioning as a retail store now, so you can order wines online and pick them up at the space (or get them delivered if you live in the area!) Lauren and her team are always ready with a recommendation if you're not sure what you want. I would also be remiss if I didn't mention their (now virtual) classes taught by Margot! They happen every Sunday (both afternoon and evening options) and cover all sorts of cool topics in the wine world. She makes wine approachable and fun, and I always learn something new. Classes are $10 (though if you don't add the extra $5 to support their chosen charity for that month, what are you even doing?!) I entered and asked for the dealer's choice, and the server gave some interesting options to try - there weren't any explanations given, but fortunately I was familiar with both the producer Matassa and the Korean rice wine hanamakgeolli. Other less attuned wine drinkers might have felt completely ignored, and yes, like the server was snobby and pretentious if you knew nothing about wine. Note that 20% gratuity is automatically included into your bill - and I only learned that after the fact. The sole person running the place was busy attending to her phone, back away from the door, for a little while. The wine bar has a strong mission of leaving your judgment at the door, but somehow the owner managed to pass sweeping judgments on the entire Yelp community with her eviscerating response to a one star review here. We came buy for their Caviar and Wine pairing class and the team at Rebel were certainly knowledgeable about both. They paired some wonderful wines that brought out the complexity of the 3 "bumps" of caviar we had and vice versa. Closed when they give classes I was worried that I wouldn't be able to get a ticket due to a mixup where we were 4 but only had 3 tickets. Stopping by a little early, we were able to talk to them and get a ticket no problem. I would suggest planning ahead since this place is pretty tiny. The class was indoors only and closed to the public though. Bow market was pretty cool that day though as they provided blankets for those unfortunate enough to be sitting outside while we were having a great time during our edutainment. read more

This intimate wine bar has great drinks and great vibes. The store is pretty small, with probably ten seats at a bar and another ten bar stools along the sides of the store. That and the low candlelight make for a pretty intimate space, kept lively by the conversations and drinks. There are a huge selection of drinks, by the bottle or the glass, and the servers are very knowledgeable in giving suggestions based on your preferences. The servers are seriously great--so friendly on top of being lowkey sommeliers. This place is more than a wine bar. It is a safe and inclusive space that consistently advocates for social justice and equity, a place that respects people and celebrates life and all love. Yes, I've learned how to test for acid in a wine (thanks Margot!), how to really describe what I meant when I used to ask for something that tasted "funky," and I've discovered some unique wines from places I've never visited; I've also had meaningful conversations about life, met some incredible people whom I now call friends, hosted my first public yoga event in collaboration with them (shout-out to Remnant too!), learned ways to be an antiracist and ally, increased my Queer vocabulary, met amazing biodynamic wine producers and learned how they live to support and nourish our planet...I could go on and on. This place has a soul and a beautiful beating heart that extends warmth and acceptance to all who enter. For me, it's a space to learn, grow, clink wine glasses in celebration, drink said wine, and learn ways to dismantle white supremacy. Five stars because I have no complaints and it is exactly what it seems - a small wine bar with wines you probably haven't heard of, has cool labels, and are funky, different, and still awesome. Pull a seat up to the counter, they'll ask you what you usually like and go from there. They'll give you a pour to try for all the wines by the glass. I have to say the ones they recommended for each of us on our different tastes worked out pretty well. Small shop with an intimate kind of setting. Just take a look at the pictures, you'll see it's a cozy shop. Ever been to haley.henry? Same feel but more hipster. You're in Somerville. Of course it feels hipster. They have outdoor seating right out front with heat lamps and BLANKETS. It was gross outside when we went but the area is covered and would be nice to bring the dog with on a nice day/night. There aren't any restrooms in the shop, but Remnant Brewery is right next door. Can just check out their gender neutral restrooms then pop back over. I'll be recommending this place to some of the more sophisticated winos I know. I think they'll get a kick out of this funky little wine bar. read more

Oh boy. Where to begin. Given that we are in the middle of global pandemic and local businesses are struggling, I decided to throw my support behind a virtual tasting event that Rebel Rebel was hosting. Today when I went to purchase the wine from the store (in the middle of a thunderstorm and downpour mind you), there was sign on the front door that said "Open". Naturally, as anyone would do, I entered. However, no one else was behind the counter or in the room with me, which was a little weird, but I haven't been here before, so I waited to make my purchase. And waited. And waited. After about 10 minutes, the clerk returned from wherever she was was off-site and became very agitated by my presence. The first words she says to my girlfriend and I are "Um, what are you doing in here?". So of course we are very confused at this point. Instead of apologizing or saying hello/welcome/ really any normal human introduction, she then proceeds to take the bold move of patronizing us further. "Did you know that we are in the middle of a pandemic? It's not safe" she tells two mask-wearing, hand-sanitizing, social distancing customers, as if we were some sort of idiots who were unaware of the most serious public health crisis of our life. Although the only door into the facility says "Open" AND was unlocked, we were apparently supposed to somehow know to wait outside in the middle of a downpour for her to take her order, despite her not even having the courtesy to be present in the first place. So instead of calmly and politely explaining that their license does not currently allow customers inside, and instead of apologizing for not being there to tell us, the clerk decided to take the bold move of patronizing and yelling at customers who drove 40 minutes out of their way to support a small, local business. I will never go back to this establishment and instead support other local wine shops who appreciate customers, like Ball Square Fine Wines (also in Sommerville). Other places will appreciate your business and need your support because as the clerk at Rebel Rebel would absolutely love to remind you of: "we are in the middle of a pandemic". read more

Came on a weeknight and had a great experience. Only 1 bartender so took a couple minutes for them to be free. They patiently explained the focus on natural wines. They even poured and talked through 3 different wine options to help us make selections. This is a premium good at around $15 per glass. But the wines were interesting, the service was helpful, and the space was cool and cozy. Because of the price point and that I didn't love the wines, I wouldn't call this 5 stars. Also, Google maps sucks as explaining where Bow Street market it and the Rebel Rebel website has no phone number. Walk on Somerville ave and then turn into Bow Market Way. There are a lot of things that I miss during the pandemic. Close to the top of the list (after seeing/hugging my family members) is getting to spend time at this lovely, welcoming wine bar. I always leave trying a new and exciting wine. Even during this time, I get so much joy popping by to quickly check in with Lauren Friel and the rest of the Rebel Rebel staff and pick up a bottle of rose. One word to describe this place: AMAZING. If you're in the area and you're craving wine (or anything, honestly, I don't care) come here. You will be the furthest thing from disappointed. Whatever the opposite of that is. Satisfied? You'll be beyond satisfied that you came here. The ladies that run and own this place are so awesome and know a ton of stuff about wine but they don't make you feel bad about it! If you know nothing about wine, even names of types of wines, cool! Tell them if you like sweet or dry or bubbly and they'll pour you samples until you find something that you want a full glass (or bottle) of. These women know what they're doing, so chances are it'll take less than 3 samples to get you there. Maybe even only 1. They're THAT good. The place is a bit small, but for this kind of service and quality, I could care less. No dogs allowed inside, but they have outdoor seating year round and provide blankets when it's cold. tl;dr- Fully women owned wine bar with great wines and they'll definitely help you find something you love. A wine bar? In Somerville? Well, then we must go. I love, love, love wine, so of course I was planning on coming here to check it out. Situated in the Union Square Bow Market area, which offers some other great shops, food, and a uniqueness to them all, is always fun to visit. When we arrived, the place is small inside, but you still get that cool vibe feeling. A typical wine bar with dim lights, a sexy atmosphere where you almost feel as if you are in NY city. Her wines, mostly natural, are always written on a chalkboard so there is no real menu. We were able to taste the wine(s) that caught our eye. Rebel Rebel does not offer any food but I did see a couple walking around holding what looks like a lunch tray (think back to when you were in the high school cafeteria) of cheese and crackers. So, we did order from the local and nearby pizza shop called Hot Box, which is mainly bar pizza, but was sooooo good. Not probably the best food with wine, but it will do (when I think pizza, I think beer). You can also order from JaJu which has the best Pierogi's in town. Outside of a curiously and intentionally curated list of wines offered weekly from some of the best in the Natural Wine biz, they give a shit.
