Why anyone would come here is beyond me. The person at the register looked at us when we came in but said nothing. Not even when we were looking at the jewelry at the counter. Acted like we were invisible. I thought it was a thrift store but they have ALOT of new clothing with some vintage mixed in. It's clean and well labeled but I'd still never ever go back. From reading the reviews this place already has you can see there's a pattern of very rude staff. But i'm here to talk about the owner. After applying for a part time position i went in for an interview and was greeted with nothing. He wasn't welcoming, and didn't seem interested in the interview at all. After explaining my previous experience he looked at my resume and actually said to me, "so you know blah blah blah". And I left within 5 minutes. Not only is the clothing selection full of transplant shein like clothing, but the owner gave me the worst job interview experience i've ever had. What a fun place to shop! huge store filled with vintage clothing and new clothing designed in retro styles. Only wish I was 35 years younger so I could wear these pieces. The collection of vintage dresses is quite impressive. There are sweaters with 60s swirl patterns; 70s bell bottom pants covered in flower-power daisies; white platform go-go boots; and 80s style puffer crop jackets in neon colors just to name a few. Even more appealing we're the prices, so reasonable and affordable. lots of accessories, too. Tons of shoes, hats, headbands, fashion jewelry, belts and scarves. Lots of men's clothing. Even some Hawaiian Aloha shirts. Store is spacious with rows and rows if clothing and plenty of space to walk around and check things out. Very organized and clean. Great shop if your style is vintage, if you need a retro outfit for a specific function or if you just like to check things out. This used to be our favorite place to find fun and quirky outfits for parties, special events, etc, on the cheap, but our most recent visit left a bad taste in our mouths, and not just because they are still enforcing mask-wearing, despite it being two weeks past Governor Brown rescinding the mandate. All the employees we encountered were curt, if not outwardly rude, and unhelpful. I witnessed on more than half a dozen occasions customers wandering in, having not seen the tiny, flimsy, handwritten signs stating that masks were still required within, and being barked at, and basically ordered to turn around and put on a mask before entering. More than one group opted to simply leave and not return after being treated so rudely. Don't get me wrong, they are *well* within their rights to want to protect themselves and their customers, but they could do so with a with bit more decorum and grace. This isolated incident aside, Red Light has a pretty stellar selection of vintage clothing and accessories, but unless you're just shopping for whatever strikes your fancy, you're really going to have to work for it to find something that fits any particular vision you entered with. Although it wasn't always this way, the store is divided into two halves: the "front" half containing more expensive, higher quality items, and the other half being filled with a larger, bargain bin collection, with nothing costing more than $10. You can find some really great deals here, but you can also find torn and stained garments as well. My wife ended up putting back both of the items she had pulled off the racks, after noticing some cosmetic flaws that made them...less than fashionable. Until these things improve, it's going to be difficult to justify coming back here. Regardless of what traffic laws state, don't stop at this Red Light. read more

Instead of bringing most of the staff back or work on safety measures, (like the loans and grants stipulate, the store owner and his girlfriend went on a 2 1/2 week wine tour vacation just days after getting the funds. I'll start by saying I really loved this store. I think it's a gem in our city and it was my first time getting to shop there. So I daringly bought a pair of hot pink platform sneakers while I was there and after a week on them sitting in my closet, I just didn't feel like I would take them out on the town like I thought I might, so I went back to make a return. When I get there, I was greeted by a person who wasn't very kind at the register. I walk up and ask them if I can please return the shoes and the person rudely stated "we don't do returns". Well, the company website states: "Policies and Returns RETURNS: Red Light Districts Clothing will accept returns and/or exchanges on full price clothing in its original unworn and unwashed state within 14 days of your order being received. Gift cards, undergarments, books, beauty, and items intended for consumption will not be eligible for return. Shipping cost is the responsibility of the customer and will not be reimbursed in the event of a return or an exchange. Sale items are not eligible for return." This is information I looked up before making the 30 minute drive to the store to avoid a wasted trip. So I say, "Okay, it's just your website days your can return items for up to 14 days" and they responded with "all sales are final." And turned away. This was a rude response as a shopper and so I suggested as I left, "Okay, well you should consider changing your website or inform your buyers at the time of sale." The attitude exuding off this person was the shittiest experience I have had in a long time and is why I wanted to review. Came back here after not returning in three years and wow. My experience was extremely negative! I brought in a heavy tote bag full of clothing. I understand they sell vintage but i saw a lot of fast fashion on the sales floor - clothing that clearly was not vintage from just looking at the tags - stuff with original crisp tags still on. So i brought in a range of things from the 80s/90s, and some modern trends thinking they may be interested in some of it. I put my bag down, they tell me it will be about 5-10 mins, and then my things would be ready and sorted. I felt like that was a bit quick and likely not enough time to look through everything.. so red flag. I came back about 15 mins later & my bag was in the same spot, and looked completely untouched. The person at the counter said they "didnt see anything" & that they "only take vintage"... i said "I brought vintage too.." the clerk said "Well he didnt see anything." But it was clear they didn't even look through my bag... like i had a vintage dooney and bourke sitting at the bottom of that bag they likely would have taken if they saw it... but they didnt cause they didnt actually go through my things. First time here and I unfortunately came at a bad time because just as I walked in, after politely being asked to use hand sanitizer, I was told that they are closing for lunch in 15 minutes. Now, I could have chosen to leave and come back but I had an appointment and was walking back to my car, so I decided to spontaneously pop in. I of course decided to act like the world was on fire and shop very quickly and I was able to find 3 items that I LOVE! A Disney character hoodie, a villain inspired comic tee, and a New Orleans tank top. I am moving so they are packed up but once I have a chance I will upload pictures because they are so cute! My girlfriend and I stopped by here yesterday and the cashier would not stop very obviously flirting with her and it made us both extremely uncomfortable. It was quite literally comment after comment, saying she has "adorable little shoulders" and continuously holding up different articles of clothing saying "you'd look so cute in this" etc etc. My girlfriend is adorable and I don't mind people appreciating her beauty but I do mind getting DEATH STARES because if it and being BLATANTLY IGNORED when I asked questions because you have a crush on my girl. Personally, I think hitting on customers at work is a huge no no and we will NOT be coming back here again because of it. Never leave a leather jacket at a club unattended. Like a mad man I was all over the city looking for a leather biker jacket. Man, I looked just about everywhere, trust me. Either they were too new or too damn small. to me leather has to be just about perfect. Now, I've been coming here over the years and found some cool vintage finds. But, today I was focused, which really helps when going vintage hunting. I walked in and noticed all the jackets are up on the wall. I guess they're too bulky to put on the rack. But, I had to ask a very busy employee to start pulling them down. She was more than happy to assist me and was still pleasant, even after I rejected 6 in a row. Of course the very last jacket that was 20 feet high on the wall was the winner. It was so funny because I was like really apologetic, I felt bad that she had to climb up on a ladder and still needed a pole to reach it. I was so pleased with the customer service I received here. Be mindful when purchasing items. Went in to quickly buy a gift. Bought Something that was definitely cute but got home and looked at the price tag. The item had it's original price tag for $20, sold to me for $22.95. It's just $2.95, but how can you want to support a local company when they're pretty sleazy and money hungry that they most likely paid out $5 dollars, if not less, for an item, and resold it for 4.5x the purchase price. Hawthorne provides so many things to the people of Portland, places to eat, a place to laugh, a place to people watch and a place to shop at like this. The staff is as colorful as the clothing. We strolled in here looking to see if we could find something off the wall. I can say I saw miles and miles of flannel and t shirts, and every color robe imaginable. We were not once greeted by anyone, is this Hawthorne snobbery at its best? Possibly, because even as we walked up to the counter to look at some old school magazines, the guy behind the counter with his giant walrus mustache and pin striped skinny hipster pants could not bring himself to even acknowledge the customers less than a foot from him. The place is covered in black velvet art work and there was a velvet Elvis painting a friend has been wanting, so I called back later to ask if it were for sale. Okay, I expected walrus guy to answer but it was a high pitched giggling girl, and she said, "no we sell clothes and clothing accessories, NOT paintings, all our paintings are for decoration, you see we sell clothes not art, right?" Sniff paint much from that art work? My word, the chick was talking like she was drinking Red Bull meets Quad espresso shots. I am glad she said it nicely and sort of Hawthorne Blvd style, so I didn't become instantly pissed for an innocent question. At least go check them out and the Boutique Goodwill across the street, they pretty much go hand in hand. read more

Red Light Clothing exchange is an eclectic consignment shop with fair pricing and a ridiculously large inventory. One of the first things on my Portland agenda was to find a cool spot with some inexpensive plus size clothing. We had just finished breakfast at a local doughnut shop and decided to walk around and see what the neighborhood had to offer. I have to say that this is a VERY walkable neighborhood with plenty of shops, restaurants and everything in between. It was my great luck to find Ted Light Clothing Exchange. It's a vintage type shop with a youthful (yet soulful) edge that carries anything from Western shirts to kimonos. I was absolutely delighted to see they had a plus size section with TONS of choices. I ended up leaving with two dresses, three sweaters and a top or two which set me back about $50. A steal for some great vintage pieces that were actually my size. My partner also found a very inexpensive kimono (we had been searching for one for Halloween) and a western shirt. This is the PERFECT spot if you're looking for one of a kind yet inexpensive clothing. read more

Hands down the BEST vintage shop in Portland. There really is no need to shop anywhere else with their low prices and enormous assortment of clothing and accessories. They have an outstanding selection of pieces from every decade for men & women. I'm always sure to find that one item to complete my look no matter where I'm going. This isn't the place to find cargo pants and plain t-shirts. If you want those basic things head to those other (corporate) buy sell trade stores on the street. They will accommodate you with fugly mass produced mall garbage. Red Light is where you go to find a truly unique outfit that is young, flirty and sexy. Selling here is so rewarding. I can trade in things I'm not so in love with anymore, don't quite flatter my changing body or changing hair colors & styles to get something totally individual! The store is really well organized with signs to indicate which racks items can be found on, shoes are by size, clothing by item style- and I love that I can snag a whole entire outfit for under $20. I ended up in Red Light actually looking for an outer coat. Didn't find one, or at least one that I'd put on. But I did ended up with a really nice blue and green knit scarf. I am very much lacking in the scarf department since I didn't quite need them in Texas. Apparently they are kind of a necessity in this area. So score one point for me. Heck, it's a used clothes store, you know what you will find when you come in here. You can sell clothing here and for the holiday season you can get your wonderful Ugly Sweater for all the Christmas parties coming up!! I had been to Red Light a few times and have loved most of the selection. Recently though I had a terrible experience and will not return. I brought in some clothing for the first time to exchange. I approached the woman at the trading counter and immediately felt like I was back in kindergarten at my first day of school. I was met with an unemotional stare and a cold, 'Ya?' I then handed over my clothing and came back 20 min later. As most places do, they only accepted a pair of shoes which I decided to exchange for trade. This same lady slid the receipt over and didn't say a word. I wasn't able to stay so I decided to use the trade dollars the next time. On my way home I realized that at the bottom in tiny writing it says a signature is required and that the trade value needs to be used THAT day. I went back the next day, explained the situation to the woman at the front who graciously explained it isn't a problem and that I could use the credit then. I was very thankful for this as I was seeking to spend a couple hundred dollars at the store that day so this was definitely an incentive to do so. After an hour or so of shopping I had found about 10 clothing items and was excited to purchase. As I was still looking the same woman came up to me to explain that actually no I couldn't use the trade in money because she didn't know it was from the day before; so that was lie/excuse number one. I reminded her that actually I told her the entire situation and that it was pretty unfair for them to come back after an hour when this was their miscommunication. At this point I asked to speak to a manager about, at the very least, getting my product back. The next lady I spoke to was unbelievably rude and began walking away while I was still talking to her. Again I was told it was my fault that the initial staff person hadn't informed me of their policy. It took another 20 min to come to a 'deal' which was getting about $8 dollars back. Upon handing me MY money, the 'manager' proceeded to 'scold me' calling me honey claiming I knocked things off the shelves. I was appalled since I had been standing outside waiting and didn't know what she was talking about. I then said she could look through her cameras and see that I didn't do a thing, only for me to be told that there are no cameras. THEN the woman refused to give me my cash back until she found out who had done it. Long story short, EXTREMELY poor management and staffing. Employees seem to be personally involved in the business operations meaning there is no business mindset at all. The amount of anger/unkindness among the staff is palpable. I could go on and on and on, but I truly believe the amount of business they lose due to their sour attitude and inability to connect with consumers will be the ultimate downfall of the 'business.' Either way, I cannot be bothered by people who cannot see past themselves. Management should place a higher emphasis on quality of the individual they are hiring rather than their ability to act 'countercultural.' read more

I have been living here three years now, and while Red Light has the potential to be coolest/funkiest place in town, the ridiculous buyers and nasty staff have ruined any potential they had to rock it. If you want an 80/90s flower babydoll dress they have 1,000s. Someone there thinks this is the height of fashion. Real vintage- forget it. They don't have a clue and they don't want it, but Beavis and Butthead they will sell. I'm pretty sure we were scoffed at on our entrance instead of greeted. That was the first visit. I was in disbelief. So we gave them a second chance. A few weeks later we were in the neighborhood and thought we'd check out what they had to offer again. Yet again, we were treated poorly right from the get go. The guy behind the counter looked up when we entered, I waved, smiled and said hello. He just looked back down at whatever he was doing. Maybe he was blind and deaf? Could be the case but if not that is just down right rude in my world. The worst part is this place has some really interesting clothes and my wife really liked their massive selection of unique stuff but we just can't shop at a place that treats their patrons in such a manor. Had me wait for TEN minutes at the counter without greeting me and I actually thought she was a customer. My key to continued success at Red Light is to remain focused. I enter. I beeline to dress section. I flip. I flip flip. I continue to flip through dresses. I grab. I flip. and so forth. I wait for dressing room (there is a bell, not that it always brings anyone a-runnin'). I try. I purchase. I leave. Fairly straightforward, yes? One cannot really expect the customer service to be exemplary. It's a cheesy "hip" vintage superstore, employing some of the cream of the cheesy hip crop. They're fine. And every time I am rung up, the salesperson is very friendly and nice. I don't know what else you're looking for...I usually have great luck. Focus!! read more

Okay. I have been a patron to Red Light for about a decade now. That's 10 freaking years. Every year, I did incredibly well at trading there -- every time there was at least one thing taken. They were more generous than Buffalo Exchange, more fun. They had THE best stuff; I still have a lot of my most treasured vintage items from there. It was the place to go if you liked unique items and didn't mind the dig and the challenging atmosphere. But after the mainstay buyer gal (who was the sweetest) left, this place took a SHARP dive. It's worse everytime I go in. I leave angry -- it never fails. And it's not because I have changed. Red Light used to be my favorite store in Portland -- for years I referred people there for a unique Portland experience. It USED to be affordable (now there's too many $16 fall-apart boring pajama shorts. Really?). USED to be stuffed full of amazing and unique items. NOW there is so much crappy and overpriced new merchandise from China probably made in sweatshops that it actually gives me a headache. (And not the good headache from the incense, loud funky music, low lighting and the thrill of some damn fine deals like the good 'ol days.) I used to find almost all my most amazing pieces here. And now: NADA. NOTHING. BOGUS. AWFUL. Even the people at Crossroads (who hardly buy my stuff because they're often too vintage-y, so they usually refer me down the street to RL & Buffalo) are reluctant to recommend it anymore because they hear all the time how beeotchy and grumpy they are. RL hasn't taken a THING from me since the usual buyer gal left. And there's absolutely at LEAST ONE thing they would absolutely sell if they took it. Instead they take damaged, stained, awful crud. I feel punished every time I go in there. WHY? Are the only people welcome there are kitschy, "out-there" people now? Am I too "normal"? Great way to do business, guys. After a decade of shopping at this place every few months, I am also boycotting RL. I've given it too many chances already. There needs to be consequences for their shitty service, unfortunately. If anyone else has some places with affordable second-hand that trades (other than Buffalo Exchange and Crossroads), please illuminate me. For those who knew how RL used to be, I highly suggest going to Artifact on Division. Thank ghad for them, they came right when Red Light went down the crapper. Artifact is friendly, they do consignment on most items. They may still be finding their footing but they have a great corner of true vintage and lots of other great items, including furniture; I've traded for my favorite lamps there. They even have oddities they will buy and sell, like skulls and natural science items, art, old and great jewelry. SKIP RED LIGHT. Today I went into my local bakery and recieved a tight lipped stare rather than the usual perturbed snarl and I was giddy, babbling to the French hubby that, "I think the bakery lady is finally coming around!" Bad customer service is a time honored tradition in Paris, and people tolerate it much like they tolerate copious amounts of dog shit on sidewalks and scooters running red lights. However, when I go home to the US I expect a higher degree of service. That's one of the few things that the Americans seem to do better than the French. At the very least, I expect to be treated with a modicum of courtesy. The Red Light, much like a Parisian bakery, excels at providing service that ranges from disinterested to down right disrespectful (like the time two employees were over-heard loudly denigrating a customer's blouse). The clothes (though over-priced) aren't bad, and I do admit to having bought a couple of great pieces at Redlight, but the nasty attitudes of the staff ensures that I'll be skipping this place on my next trip home. read more
