What a fun place to shop! huge store filled with vintage clothing and new clothing designed in retro styles. Only wish I was 35 years younger so I could wear these pieces. The collection of vintage dresses is quite impressive. There are sweaters with 60s swirl patterns; 70s bell bottom pants covered in flower-power daisies; white platform go-go boots; and 80s style puffer crop jackets in neon colors just to name a few. Even more appealing we're the prices, so reasonable and affordable. lots of accessories, too. Tons of shoes, hats, headbands, fashion jewelry, belts and scarves. Lots of men's clothing. Even some Hawaiian Aloha shirts. Store is spacious with rows and rows if clothing and plenty of space to walk around and check things out. Very organized and clean. Great shop if your style is vintage, if you need a retro outfit for a specific function or if you just like to check things out. Located right on SE Hawthorne amongst the many shops and restaurants, make it your destination!

This used to be our favorite place to find fun and quirky outfits for parties, special events, etc, on the cheap, but our most recent visit left a bad taste in our mouths, and not just because they are still enforcing mask-wearing, despite it being two weeks past Governor Brown rescinding the mandate. All the employees we encountered were curt, if not outwardly rude, and unhelpful. I witnessed on more than half a dozen occasions customers wandering in, having not seen the tiny, flimsy, handwritten signs stating that masks were still required within, and being barked at, and basically ordered to turn around and put on a mask before entering. More than one group opted to simply leave and not return after being treated so rudely. Don't get me wrong, they are *well* within their rights to want to protect themselves and their customers, but they could do so with a with bit more decorum and grace. This isolated incident aside, Red Light has a pretty stellar selection of vintage clothing and accessories, but unless you're just shopping for whatever strikes your fancy, you're really going to have to work for it to find something that fits any particular vision you entered with. Although it wasn't always this way, the store is divided into two halves: the "front" half containing more expensive, higher quality items, and the other half being filled with a larger, bargain bin collection, with nothing costing more than $10. You can find some really great deals here, but you can also find torn and stained garments as well. My wife ended up putting back both of the items she had pulled off the racks, after noticing some cosmetic flaws that made them...less than fashionable. Until these things improve, it's going to be difficult to justify coming back here. Regardless of what traffic laws state, don't stop at this Red Light.

Red Light Clothing got over $250,000 in relief funds and government loans. The second payout was on 6/08/20. Instead of bringing most of the staff back or work on safety measures, (like the loans and grants stipulate, the store owner and his girlfriend went on a 2 1/2 week wine tour vacation just days after getting the funds. Traveling from Washington through California and so on. Hundreds of stops and then came back to live inside the store with ZERO quarantining measures whatsoever. friendly reminder they are scum

This is one of the original places for second chance closings. They carry all kind of funky shoes, undies, clothings, socks, hats, paintings, masks etc... if you're open to adventure and color, this is a great place to get them in reasonable prices. They also would buy from those who want to sell if the stuff is deemed sellable. Well organized and clean.

Be mindful when purchasing items. Went in to quickly buy a gift. Bought Something that was definitely cute but got home and looked at the price tag. The item had it's original price tag for $20, sold to me for $22.95. It's just $2.95, but how can you want to support a local company when they're pretty sleazy and money hungry that they most likely paid out $5 dollars, if not less, for an item, and resold it for 4.5x the purchase price. Don't be me, look at the price tag. Or just don't go here.

Vast selection, the best vintage in Portland! When I visit, I plan on at least 45 minutes because there is so much to see! I walk around the entire footprint then turn around and walk the other direction because different items will catch your eye. If you are seeking an occasional chair, they have so many styles and cool pieces. Wish I had room for more! They just don't make these styles anymore or of the same quality. They usually have a large selection of couches also in shades of teal, orange, avocado just like on The Brady Bunch. Even plaid, if that's your thing. And of course boomerang shaped coffee tables to complete your seating area. There are so many unique one of a kind pieces too, like an upright piano transformed into a bar. OMG, I wish I had the space for it! What I always have room for is unique bar ware and glasses and they have lots to choose from. Lots of metal and sculptural wall art which really gives a room personality especially when complimenting paintings or prints. They have a large selection of table lamps but it's the hanging pendants that I really love. Perusing this store ignites so many memories! I see items that take me back to my childhood home, pieces I haven't thought about in years. My face lights up remembering a curved side table, a Sputnik light and metal flower wall art similar to what adorned our den. Or a set of whiskey sour glasses like the ones my dad drank from, prints on pillows that are in photographs in my family album. Furniture that over years made it's way to our basement and then probably a vintage shop like Hawthorne Modern! Love, love, love this place! They moved to SE Alder but the charm, the selection, the finds are all still there!

I went in to follow-up on something my daughter had seen and wanted. I'm not exactly their customer demographic and it was a little bit of unchartered territory, but the blond kid working knows his merch. I gave him a description of the item I was looking for and he led me right to it. Based upon what my daughter had chosen, he was able to point me in the direction of a couple of other items she might like - and she did! Super nice people working here. So refreshing to have shopkeepers engage. Customer service seems to have fallen by the wayside, I think as a result of COVID and this place is bringing it back! Clean, tidy and organized shop with great people there to help if you need it. Definitely worth a look if vintage is your thing.

I've only seen a few pieces that are questionable like why is it $30+ for a tee with a giant hole on the back side They do buy clothes, it's by appointment only though. I sold here once definitely won't do it again though. You can take 25 pieces at a time looking for y2k and if you got it larger sizes. I took about 20 tees, older but clean and definitely y2k, 2 jackets and 3 hats. Dude said $60 for it?! I took it because I needed the money but I won't be doing that again. I wouldn't recommend this place at all if you are trying to sell but definitely worth it if your buying
