What a great place this is! Think a thrift store with a lot of everything. This place is large, but it didn't feel overwhelming. They had a great selection of nearly everything you can think of. My fear with thrift stores is that things will be junky, and not the case at all at Village Merchants. Everything looked to be in great condition. I also thought their prices were quite fair. I had visited several other thrift stores the day of this visit, and VM were the most fairly priced. The person who rang me out was so friendly! I will absolutely be back to visit again. read more

This is one of the most underrated thrift stores in Portland, in my opinion. I have never visited and not found something wonderful, yet despite their great stock and downtown location, I've also never felt they were overcharging on anything I've gotten from them. I especially appriacte all of the different rooms and outdoor spaces they have. Out front you'll find furniture and clothes on sale, right inside there's a whole room of knick knacks and jewelry, followed by a room of bags and shoes, then one of clothes, an outdoor area that features outdoor and garden goods, a kitchen area, and an upstairs where you can find lamps, children's, and furniture! There is seriously a little bit of everything and it can take a couple rounds through the store to feel confident you haven't missed anything. I highly recommend stopping in! read more

Amazing gem of a vintage store that we stumbled upon after a Yelp event in the area. We did not have enough time to explore all the clothing, knickknacks, kitchenware, or home furnishings. You'd need a couple of hours here. I did find some perfectly fitting brown boots and a nice looking knit gray beanie. I also got some teal Essie nail polish that I'm excited about. First time dropping in and was quite impressed! This place is large and has a ton of stuff to look at! From Knicks Knacks, clothing, shoes, accessories, homegoods and more they've probably got it. The value seems to be very reasonable compared to other Portland thrift/consignment stores so that was a breath of fresh air! I even found some fun dresses so I didnt leave empty handed! Been shopping here since 1998, selling/consigning items for over a year. Selling here is a chore, they only buy M-W-F-Sa, 11:00am-2:00pm. People come as early as 8:00am to place a box/bag to save a place in a winding line(reminiscent of an amusement park) as to not wait the long hours. Parking is very limited. By 11:00am there is usually a long line, with waiting times of 45 minutes to 2+ hours just to get to the intake counter. I've gotten there around ten, and still had to wait an hour+ after 11:00am opening. There is no restroom available on premises, so better go before you leave the house. Once you get to the buy window, it's up to another 3+ hours before they've gone through your stuff, offering you cash/trade on the spot, or put on consignment, and you can pickup what wasn't taken, or have it donated. They have up to 3 people at a time for a fast retail sales checkout line, but only 1 person at the intake counter, which is why the buying/consigning process takes so long. Many a time I've seen people approach the line, see how many people are there, ask those in line how long does it take or if there's a better, less busy day, get their answer, and leave. So plan accordingly, may take several hours with no guarantee they'll take much, if anything. 5 weeks ago I took some items in, including some lamps, picked up the refusals later that day, no lamps so I assumed they took them all. 3 weeks ago I'm told there's a bin of returns, no date on the 3x5 card as is VM protocol. It was some of the lamps from 5 weeks ago, minus their shades/bulbs, the lamps apparently sitting somewhere for 2 weeks. Other like business's don't pick parts. Spoke to the owner, Melanie 2 weeks ago about the incident, was told that Village Merchants doesn't separate shades/bulbs from lamps, and it was an isolated incident. Today, took some things in, a few lamps, again, a shade taken, lamp returned. I asked for the shade to be returned, it wasn't found. Spoke to a manager, she put me in touch with the owner, I reminded her about the conversation 2 weeks ago, today she told me that sometimes shades do get separated from lamps. So, I thought to myself, what...Lied to me 2 weeks ago? A convenient lapse of select memory? Change the policy since then? Also was told it's best to end the seller/buyer relationship. I asked that my remaining consigned items be returned to me, and a check be issued for what is owed me, that I'd be in on Monday, 2:00pm to pick up my things/check, was told they'd issue the check, but there was no way to pull all my consigned items. This was Saturday, can't pull my items in 2 1/2 days? When you consign something, it's given a code on the price tag, and when it sells, your account is credited the money owed. Otherwise there's no inventory record kept by Village Merchants(how convenient). I was told I'd be welcome to go through the store(thousands upon thousands of cluttered items) and pull my items. There's a dozen+ employees at a time that start an hour before the 11:00am open time, why can't they do it? Shady, shady... I strongly recommend NOT selling/consigning items to Village Merchants. Go to Rerun or any other consignment store in Portland, make an appointment with them(can't do that at Village Merchants), and get an inventory of what's bought or consigned. At least they appreciate and respect the sellers that make their business possible, and you get a "thank you for your patience/support". I've also had glass and ceramics that were wrapped and without cracks/chips when brought, then returned damaged. You break it, you should have bought it. Shady practices Village Merchants, what else are you doing? Interested in buying? Check out the negative reviews on Google, especially the ones where (former) customers were made to feel uncomfortable by employees. And also notice the lack of response from Village Merchants regarding these reviews. What an unexpected, amazing find! Had a long weekend in the city and quite literally just walked by and felt the need to explore inside. A fabulously eclectic store with items priced for all budgets. You could outfit an entire home here, as well as the people and animals in it! I wish sellers could sign up for same-day appointments like Artifact does. You CAN get an appointment for a large number of items, but the wait is 1-3 months out. If you're thrifting make sure to hit this place! Village Merchants has more square footage than your average thrift store, so make sure you don't miss the upstairs & the outside sections. The store offers: jewelry, clothes, home goods, nick-nacks, luggage, stuffed animals, books, art supplies, clocks, Flower pots, wicker baskets, furniture etc. Low prices & good stuff. There's always something cute & unexpected there. I enjoy their low prices, but with low prices comes the extra work of having to Sift through stuff. It isn't as curated as some boutique stores with higher prices bc they are reaching a broader audience. I usually buy vintage eclectic, or trendy things, but the store caters to other people's needs as well. Check out the vintage purses, which are behind the glass case & not with the regular purses- I bought 1 from West Germany for $5!. I, also, frequent their glassware. If you're in the market for wine glasses this is a must go place bc their prices are great. Eg crystal wine glasses $2 a piece. I also get vintage tea cups ($3), & mason jars. How many times can I tell you I love this place? No, really... please meet me here one day and I'll awkwardly drag you around the store and introduce you to all of the special finds I am considering bringing home any given week. And I'm truly ok if YOU'D like to buy some of these things instead. They are treasures... deserving of a new home... preferably at someone else's expense! (I think I'm in the early stages of hoarding) Village Merchants is intelligently laid out, with all the special knickknacks and shiny objects in the front of the store. There's plenty of quirky vintage clothing to rummage through, well as toys, books, kitchen gadgets and household wares. Also, make sure I remind you to check out one of my favorite areas of the store out the back door. There is an outdoor section with every imaginable garden tchotchke you can think of. Garden pots, gnomes, outdoor shelving and garden tools... you name it, they've got it! I'll admit, it can get pretty frustrating antiquing and vintage shopping in Portland as there are so many shops with inflated prices. But I've found so many bargains at Village Merchants, literally every time I shop here I walk away with some "steal" I'm pretty certain was priced incorrectly. However, there's no need to slink back to your car to quickly swallow your receipt and hide any trace of what you paid. Everything is priced fairly and ready to find a new home. Parking can be a little tight on busy weekends, but you'll find plenty of spots in neighboring side streets. Also, be sure to check out the taco cart in the parking lot. A refreshing glass of rosa jamaica hits the spot after a marathon shopping day. It took a visit to another, more prohibitively expensive (and stylishly bankrupt) vintage store to remind me how much of an absolute treasure we have in Village Merchants. The unassuming exterior belies the expansiveness beyond its humble gates, packed to the gills with clothes, shoes, furniture, decorations, toys, trinkets, knick-knacks, accessories and a multitude of other unique and wonderful items contained within. The store, as well as the selection, is seemingly endless! Even better, you will not find here the grossly, hyper-inflated prices of similar stores on Hawthorne: some fantastic items can be found for a handful of bucks, and not once have either my wife or myself scoffed at a price tag here, which I cannot say for other vintage outfits. Hell, my wife can make out like a bandit here for $100, with a haul that requires the both of us to carry out in multiple bags. Easily the best vintage store in Portland, in our opinion. Wonderfully curated store with everything for everyone. Truth be told, there isn't a single item here that I need, but the number of items I wanted was off the charts! There are many products for sale, from home goods and vintage furniture to used, retro apparel and accessories. Like many second hand goods store you have to go through items carefully and take your time browsing, as there's no certain order of how items are organized or placed. But if you have the time, it's worth checking out if you're looking for vintage items. Prices were reasonable. We found a lot of cool, one-of-a-kind items that were affordable. The employees here were also really friendly and were helping a lot of customers, trying to find certain items they had in mind. The staff definitely knew their products. I love this place. It's a treasure trove for unique and strange items. The clothing and shoes are a bit overpriced but the rest of the store makes up for it. There are not only treasures to be found but good deals to be had as well. I don't recommend selling to them because they literally pay you barely anything. I only tried it once and never will again, but for the shopping experience - definitely make the trip for a visit. There are 2 floors and a section outdoors to roam through. You can spend a couple of hours here. You will find things to laugh at and things to take home. Things you won't find anywhere else. MINUS 5 STARS !!!!!! Listen up ya'll! I have never stepped foot in this store, nor shall I EVER. The way the "business" is managed/run disgusts me. I called to ask about the consignment/selling process and was told it's all SOOO easy, come in any time, no appointment needed, we take almost everything, blah blah. Well, yay, I thought. My saint of a mother was helping me out with errands and took my huge lot of quality name brand clothes in. The clothes that I had spent literally over 4 hours ironing and hanging on hangers and making perfect just prior in order to present well. She arrives and there is a ridiculously long line and the line is not in the store, the line is made to stand outside the store. Now this just so happened to be one of the hottest days of the year. By the time my mother is served by staff she is VERY near fainting, she is told it will take TWO HOURS for them to look at/go though the clothes and to come back then to pick up what was not taken in by them. She cannot return in the 2 hrs they dictate so they say she must by 11am the next morning. She then leaves the huge lot of perfectly pressed clothes with them and basically crawls back to her car, even closer to passing out, barely gets in and throws up in a bag from heat stroke. The next day we had to cancel our important plans in order to pick up the remaining clothes and when we do, we are handed them all in a completely disheveled utterly thrown in and wrinkled heap. When we ask how many they took, they say, "we can't tell you, we don't know." WHAT??!!!! I get home and call the "manager" and she informs me, nope, they don't keep any record of what they take in, there's no way of telling if, how much or what they took, and that if anything sells it'll be on my account at that time. So.... maybe they took some of my clothes and maybe I'll one day find out if I keep checking my account for infinity. Meanwhile, my mother is sick from heat stroke, they wasted many hours of our time, wasted gas money going there and back twice and are left with a heap of clothes that look like wrinkled crap. Wow. I happened to find a beautiful scrollwork style chunk of wrought iron for my garden for $5! I got so used to seeing the price of this precious garden decor going up like crazy so finding such a treasure at a great price was pretty shocking. I will confess I was crying over shoes as a 9 1/2 medium. If you are a size 6-7 you need to go here because you will be in pure foot fetish heaven! You don't have to be a thrift junkie to enjoy this place. We have been many times, and will be many more. Love this shop! I always seem to find at least one thing I like there, and never seem to walk away with nothing. I like how they organize the shoes, in some places this is really over stimulating and overwhelming and almost impossible to find a pair in your size. But, the way village merchants has it organized it is a lot better than others, in my opinion. I also love their clothing section, so many times I have been looking for a specific item- like a dress to a nice, semi-formal event, and I will find something perfect here!
