While the selection is hit or miss, I usually find something of note while looking through William Temple. And while their prices have never been their highlight (looking at you, $400 dusty, beat up rug section), recently I've noticed a general price increase that I simply can't justify anymore. Their furniture especially is at a shockingly high price point for what is being offered (used, old, non-antique furniture). Their clothing section rarely has the quality required for the price point (SHEIN, mall brands, etc), and the glass/cookware has also struggled with the price increase. It's unfortunate because I always enjoy looking around, and I particularly like their book and music selection. I also can appreciate in a world of drop shipping and AI products hitting even thrift stores now, they maintain a standard above that. Of course another highlight is that their sales directly go back to the community. I can still appreciate that, and recommend a look around for that reason alone. read more

The music honestly really stood out to me at first- I'm so used to the same "greatest hits" endlessly looping at every business I'm in and it was so refreshing to just have nice, atmospheric instrumentals for once. The selection is well-curated and I feel it's priced pretty fairly! The books were really fun to go through, and I loved the art available. This place it great, these people are great! Fun place to shop in NW, always find something unexpected, and sometimes score something wonderful. Prices on the designer label side have really gone up, but the regular racks are worth a look for quality labels and the sale racks are where the real deals are. So much better than Goodwill, and the nicer clothing is at least as good as most of what you find in a snootier consignment store. Always a positive experience here, worth the parking hassle. This place gets a lot of donations and you can see that in the vintage furniture and Knick- knacks however I haven't been able to find much stuff personally . The space is big and well organized and I tend to pop-in a few times an year to check out some of their grand furniture pieces but honestly haven't bought one ever. The houseware section is kind of sparse but their clothe selection is big but honestly haven't browsed much of it in years . The staff is alright though I wouldn't categorize them as friendly ,most questions are met with a standard response . The space outside is a mess , people tend to leave donations outside of business hours and a lot of it gets strewn across the street which makes the storefront look more like a litter space then a nice thrift store . read more

I don't write a lot of 1-star reviews yet here I am, writing a 1-star review. I've been to Portland three times, across 3 seasons, in short succession. Each time, I've made it a point to visit William Temple House Thrift Store. Each time, I've left disappointed. And this is coming from someone who is eager to open her wallet and spend vacation dollars. This just isn't the place if you crave second-hand housewares. Furniture yes...I've seen furniture get carted out each time. But regular housewares? No. In fact, it's the first Portland business to get permanently crossed off my visit list. :-( read more

AMAZING! I love it here so much!!!!! Best thrift store I went to visit in all of Portland. The prices were fair, quality of merchandise was great, organized, and great furniture. The staff was helpful and sweet. A homeless person came in asking if they had a blanket and the staff went to go look. I felt that this says a lot about a thrift store. Update, I went back in to make sure I wasn't being silly with my review. I just genuinely think I'm done shopping at this location. I want to support them because I believe their mission is good, however, their stuff is so overpriced, the clothes are outdated... I mean they get so many donations. They could easily have a more modern clothing section. The cookware is unbelievably expensive for what it is. I would suggest hiring somebody who knows how to curate a secondhand store. It looks like they have a friend or someone like that just deciding what to put on the shelves. A little bit of googling before you put a price tag on something can show you how much you should price it for. But I'm not paying $$15 for an outdated T-shirt. I really want to like this location and I would love to be able to support it however until they bring somebody in who knows how to curate I think I'll be staying away. read more

I check this place often. Weekly. I've found good stuff, but the good things are few and far between. I'm not sure whether it gets picked over by customers or whether the volunteers cherry pick the good stuff. Some of the items are extremely overpriced, like maybe someone checked eBay prices? Do you know that if something is listed for $200 on eBay, that doesn't mean someone will pay $200 for it? I have stopped carrying a purse because they make me check it at the front desk, which is insulting, but last time I went to the goodwill bins, there was a security guard, so maybe thrifting in Portland has become a rough sport? read more

I'm giving it 3 stars out of charity. I always pop in when I'm in that part of the neighborhood, which is often. I'll tell you what never happens: me finding anything cool to buy. The clothing is so ugly it should be free. The housewares selection is a mess of mismatched or sets missing an item. I do realize where I am and have pretty low expectations which are always met. This is my go-to donation spot and my go-to buying spot for anything holiday/costume related. It doesn't make tons of money off of your donations (cough Goodwill cough) so I feel much better donating and shopping here. The donation process is very easy - just ask the worker behind the counter to open up the big door to the right of the store, and you can pull up and donate away. They'll give you a receipt for tax time too! It's just a couple blocks off of NW 23rd and a block from the Trader Joe's so I'm always passing by and window shopping, if not actual shopping. I found some killer 70 suits here not too long ago for a scavenger hunt costume contest I was doing, along with some table decorations for Diner en Blanc last year. I don't frequent it TOO often, but when I do I'm always amazed at the treasure hunt that ensues. They also have certain tags that are on sale an extra 50-75% off that particular day and rotate throughout the week. That means certain finds can really be dirt cheap! I'm not sure how they manage to stay open amidst the ever increasing rent hikes of the NW Portland area - but I am sure glad they are! read more

I've been hitting a lot of thrift stores lately. (Yes, I usually wait until the week before a Halloween party to consider what I'm going to wear. And this year I've been Yelping so many restaurants that I don't FIT into any of my OLD costumes...) I haven't been finding what was on my shopping list. But at William Temple House, I found a whole, mighty lot of what I wasn't looking for... but instantly needed to take home with me. Thank goodness it was all at thrift store prices! (Admittedly, the prices were on the high end of traditional thrift store ranges, but the stuff was quality, and this WAS in the NW...) Three things of note: 1) friendly welcome and helpful service, from the minute I walked in (and she was wearing a super-cool fuzzy hat, too). 2) Far better organized and displayed than any other thrift store I've ever hit (and I do love thrift store shopping, I admit it). And 3), no hideous sinus-searing chemical smell embedded in every fabric item -- yay! I don't have to wash things 3 times after smudging with white sage in order to make them wearable! Came in looking for some long sleeve shirts for my husband. Limited selection of mens clothing. Ample stock of womens clothing (not so much shoes and accessories though). Great furniture selection! Accepts donations, dont know if they give receipts though. Bought a 90's starwars toy still in pristine packaging for $20 - SCORE! Only major bummer is they made me check my small crossbody purse so I had to walk around with my phone and wallet the whole time. Updated review: The price has gone up so much!! I saw a framed print here for $125? That is not thrift store pricing. They've added a "fancy" section for Men's and Women's clothing near the front entrance I guess to justify the price increase. I've seen $40 or $50 items that would have been priced $12 max if they hadn't added the new "fancy" section. In addition, the new set up of the store is very confusing. The Vintage and Novelty rack has also shrunk significantly, which give me one less reason to go here. Maybe the store is transitioning to something more upscale like the Goodwill boutique downtown? If so, they need to actually have gently used designer items in store. Super sad about this downgrade. I hope someday the thrift store's once great qualities will be restored. read more

A favorite spot. Despite the very busy location, you can totally find gems in here at ok prices like a French camel hair coat for $15 or 60s pop art dress for $7. Has a cozy, neighborhood feel and I hope this place stays around forever. read more

MANAGER ENFORCES GENDER DISCRIMINATION POLICIES! I used to like this store, but today I walked in with 3 women near me carrying purses. I'm a male with a lot to carry, and was singled out for bag check due to a canvas sling on my shoulder. I asked if he wanted their bags as well, and he said no, because "those are purses, we can't take those, so if you call it a purse, then...." So I immediately responded "Give me my f***ing purse!" He complied, scoffing, and rudley tossing it on the counter. On my way out I apologized for swearing, but said that I was shocked they'd have a policy which presumes men are more likely to steal than women. The woman at the counter chimed in that "purses are OK, but not other bags, and that it's just the policy;" I pointed out that my bag was smaller than everyone else's, she then added that "this wasn't gender discrimination, and that they don't discriminate against gender, and they don't make any assumptions about gender identities." I responded that it was making an assumption about my gender identity, by taking my bag, and not those of women in the first place. She said "no it wasn't, " without fully grasping any of the terminology she was tossing around. Truth be told, I'm an androgynous individual who doesn't really identify with either gender, and gets called ma'am as much as sir (usually depending on whether or not I straighten my hair). There's no reason to correct anyone in either of those situations. This situation, however, most certainly needs to be corrected. read more

I don't tend to find items in the regular clothing aisles but I absolutely love the items hung up behind the counter, on the sale racks, and in the Novelty/Vintage items rack. These items tend to be slightly spendier than other clothes in the store (think $10-30) but still aren't pricey by any means. I've seen a bright yellow rain jacket here, leather pants, hand-knitted or crocheted clothing, and so many more cool pieces. I also love checking out their home goods items as they are usually under $5 and I've found mugs, a basket for storage, a baking pot for making pasta, and there are lots of fun and quirky shot glasses and other dishes. They also have a good amount of furniture (mainly chairs but other items too) and fun Halloween and holiday items. Definitely something for everyone. read more

What happened??? I used to come here weekly and spend $60+ and walk out with loads of home decor, baby clothing, unique dishes, baskets, great coats & sweaters for my husband, furniture pieces and so much more.. The last 10 times I've come here I've walked out with absolutely NOTHING. And not for lack of trying, I still spend my 40+ minutes here but the selection is a fraction of the amount they used to carry!! If the back doors open you see heaps and piles of goods waiting to go out but somehow the shelves stay sparse. Oh and the prices? Womens clothing use to average $4-6, they've creeped up to $9-12 as a standard. Men's are the same. Home decor & linens? I got a smallish runner for $2 before, I grabbed a matching one and someone the price for the same had jumped to $12?? Furniture is another whole joke, things used to fly in and out the door. Great couches for $60-80 and now the minimum for a gnarly big leather couch is $140+. Not to mention the crabby staff, they used to be so friendly and greeted me every week and now it seems like I'm bothering them when I want to pay. Bring my favorite neighborhood thrift shop back!!! It's so much quieter in there customer wise too, can't you see where you are going all wrong people?? No better then Goodwill down the street, sadly I'm finding better prices there these days. Tucked into NW Portland just up from Trader Joe's is this institution of a Thrift Store. When I was younger it seemed like half the furniture in my friends apartments came from here. Not to mention dishes and silverware... I like shopping here more then the local good will. They have a bigger space and usually better stuff. Well at least for the home, I don't usually look for cloths. They are in a nice location, The big draw back is that there is no parking lot at all. The store also use a good airing out. That all said it is well laid out and there are usually some good things to find here. The staff has always been ok and the prices are good. read more
