She had asked to go a few times, so we finally decided to take her on a Friday evening. I started with a Hugo spritz, my husband got the In-Fashion ( their take on an old fashioned) and my mom just got an unsweetened tea. There was an appetizer special - fried lobster tails with a lemon butter sauce - so we agreed it was a must try. While waiting for our appetizer to arrive we sampled the bread service which was a mix of warm cheesy bread, rolls, a flatbread cracker, and a pumpernickel with nuts and raisins. The bread was addictive, especially the cheesy bread, but we had to save room. The lobster was four small battered and fried tails with a side of lemon butter sauce. They were succulent and tender and so delicious. I could have eaten that as my entree, but you know we had to get steak. My mom got the surf and turf and my husband and I both got the Snake River Farms wagyu filet mignon. I got a side of Courvoisier cream with mine. We also did the au gratin potatoes, creamed corn with bacon, and Brussels sprouts. While I have had wagyu before, this was much more lean than I am used to. That didn't stop me from eating almost every bite. It came with a fondant style potato with onion jam, which was unexpected. The sides were all fantastic companions to our steak. We had to get dessert too because life is short, so we did the coconut cream pie and the flourless chocolate espresso cake. The coconut cream pie is a MUST when visiting capital grille. It's light and airy, the crust is buttery, and the presentation is beautiful. The chocolate cake is rich but not super sweet, with a bittersweet chocolate flavor balancing the espresso. Both desserts were great but I'm partial to the coconut cream pie, and I don't normally even like coconut cream pie much. There's is just THAT good. Service was perfectly paced and attentive. Valet parking is a plus. If you are looking for a more of an upscale spot, add this to your list.

They still tried to play like my mom didn't know what she was talking about, and I'm glad I wasn't there, because I don't appreciate that at all. She knew exactly what she was talking about, because we go there enough...and we never have that problem out of Dolores and Dakota. Alex, and the others were not good today. He was friendly, attentive, checked on us at just the right times, and never made us feel rushed. His service was outstanding and added to an otherwise wonderful dining experience. The only disappointment was the beverage pricing. I'll admit that we typically don't study the menu prices before ordering--that was probably our mistake. After eating in restaurants for more than 70 years, however, I can honestly say these beverage prices are among the most outrageous I've encountered. We were charged $3.99 for a single cup of black coffee and $5.99 for one glass of lemonade--nearly $10 for two beverages. The coffee was simply one ordinary cup of black coffee, and the lemonade was so incredibly sweet that it was almost undrinkable. Neither beverage came close to justifying its price. It's unfortunate because everything else was excellent. The quality of the food, the atmosphere, and Benjamin's exceptional service make Silver Diner a place we would gladly visit again. However, management should seriously reconsider charging nearly $10 for one standard cup of coffee and one mediocre glass of lemonade. Prices like that leave customers feeling taken advantage of and detract from what is otherwise a terrific dining experience. The $40 ribeye was about at the level of an "all you can eat" buffet (ie. about a $10 value). And the $43 lamb was mostly unpalatable; small chops with an odd taste; I barely ate any and gave the rest to my dog. The restaurant Estia similarly offers lamb chops for $43, but their lamb chops are about 5 times the size, and 10 times the flavor - and the ambience is so much better. Sorry, but I would avoid this restaurant. I appreciate what they're trying to do - create an upscale restaurant - but there was nothing upscale about it, except the prices. In terms of food quality, it's the type of quick place to stop into for a $20 meal. I think our bill for two was around $150 plus tip, but the quality & experience was more worth around $40 (and even then I'd be cranky about it).
