I was a guest in a wheelchair and have been in a handful of times and every time i have had a terrible experience. I do not feel like i am valued as a guest at all. My most recent experience including wait at the door for over 10 minutes to even be acknowledged to get a simple take out order of a Bubble tea. I did order a stir fry on one of my visits and it honestly wasn't that good either. Poor portion size and it was overcooked and wasn't worth what I paid for it. Recently, i was there with a large group and i haven't been asked for so much as a glass of water. I told the organizer of the group about my experience and was told the owner apologized profusely but couldn't be bothered to apologize to my face despite me being there. If you are a member of the disabled community here in Guelph, i do not recommend this establishment. I am a known disabled advocate here in the city and from experiences from this restaurant, I cannot recommend it as I felt like I wasn't valued as a guest or even recognized as a person. read more

It could have been so good... I ordered mango salad with shrimp fresh rolls and yellow curry with chicken. Fresh rolls: sauce was delicious, shrimp nice size, rolls was all noodle, lettuce and split shrimp. ZERO veg. Could have been great. Mango salad: nice portion, sauce was tasty but not on salad in advance so ingredients were dry. This salad needs to sit in the sauce. Unable to serve for dinner. It's in the fridge finishing what should have happened at the restaurant. It could have been great. Yellow curry with pineapple and chicken: (photo attached) Large portion even though the container was leaking and all over the contents of the bag. Even though the photo shows lots of potato and carrots there is still even more in the container. Why is the potato in Thai curry? Why was it not cooked properly if using it? The sauce was flavourful and sang on your tongue with the pineapple. Sadly there was only about 3 pieces of pineapple in the whole order. The chicken was chucked in last minute vs simmered in the sauce so was dry and didn't have much flavour. What a shame - the sauce was so good and if proper ingredients were added to this curry (ginger, lemon grass, etc - vs beef stew ingredients) it could have been brilliant. At least I'm expecting the mango salad to be good tomorrow. $40 fail. :( read more

They messed up my order twice eating in. I asked for no peanuts, and got peanuts. I asked for no tofu, and I got tofu. It was a decent pad thai chicken, but I asked not for tofu, but chicken. My partner had a good pho though. So get the pho. read more

I've ordered takeout and delivery from Red Papaya a few times now... Actually, a few more than I'd like to admit. I'm just going to level with you here, I eat a lot of takeout curry. I moved to Guelph over a year ago and started my hunt for the "best yellow curry in town" soon after. I've had probably every curry in a 20 km radius at this point, and Red Papaya is still at the top of my list. I'm not a huge fan of potato curry, but this place has made me a believer. The curry has a great consistency (not too thin, but not too much like gravy), which is maybe the hardest thing to find. The service is also always great. I have some picky eaters at home and the staff is always incredibly patient and meticulously double-checks every order. I've also branched out to a few of their other offerings -- the red and green curries (obviously), drunken noodles (not my favorite), and the basil stir fry (great seasoning and perfectly cooked rice). I haven't gone for the pho yet, but that's next on my list. Maybe I'll start the search for "best pho in Guelph" after I've curried myself out? Until then, Red Papaya can expect my standard order about once a week. Great quality, good price, and a TON of food with each order. I ordered two entrees for myself the last time I had it delivered (in case the basil dish didn't stand up) and ended up living off them for about a week. I came here with a friend recently since I really enjoyed their original location when I went a few years back and pho/vermicelli bowls sounded like just what we needed (pho is ideal hangover food if you ask me!) I've had the pho before (which from what I remember is very tasty for the price), so I decided to get a new favorite of mine which are the vermicelli bowls. I opted for the spring roll and pork sans peanuts (which they happily accommodated). The vermicelli bowls are around $8-9, while the pho is $7-8. My only complaints were the pork seemed a bit greasier than I'd prefer. The sauce (which is usually a vinegary fish sauce) could have used a bit more acid. And our thai teas weren't as creamy as I'd normally get them -- thinking they don't add condensed milk or its watered down a little? All in all this location is great for anyone looking for a cheap lunch or dinner that is very tasty and offers a nicely decorated venue. I still prefer Ben Thanh but this is more accessible for those who don't live in the north end of Guelph. They also have a "patio" out front that is housed inside old-quebec street mall which looks very cute when the weather is good. read more

Really nice ambience, especially with the Quebec Street Mall being empty on a Sunday evening. It's quite windy outside so being able to sit on the indoor patio was enjoyable. The Tom Yum soup with shrimp was quite good, spicy and filling. I'm told the beef Pho was also excellent. "They best one I ever had" according to my dinner companion. We ordered brown rice and green tea, which was authentic and aromatic. All in all a good choice. read more

So here is the deal. Their food tasted fine, but they mark things as vegetarian when they are not. I have eaten their "vegetarian" pad thai before, but today when I asked further I was told that the oyster sauce comes mixed in and there is no way to have it vegetarian even though that option is listed on their menu at justeat.ca. I was told that the best option for me was to get a stir fry, because anything with noodles would have the oyster sauce already mixed in and not be vegetarian regardless of how it is marked on that menu. I'm disgusted that I ate ingredients that I work hard to avoid, because things that are marked vegetarian on that menu are not so. I can't trust any food from a place that does this. read more

Unpalatable food and bad service. My brother in law finished his food 20 minutes before mine was served. I ordered sushi-do not do that- and I could see the person starting to prepare it 30 minutes after all the other mains were served. The tuna and salmon in my sushi weren't fresh, the rice was cloying and there was no wasabi or soy sauce. It seemed like they didn't care about anything. Red Papaya is right in the heart of Guelph inside the Old Quebec Street Mall. The décor is lovely with dark wood floors, railings and furniture. The lighting is dim, music plays over the speakers and there is a big mural on one of the walls. The tables are a mix of bench seating and chairs. We ordered Pho, which was decent. It's not authentic pho, definitely a westernized version but good none-the-less. We also ordered the noodle of the day, which that day was crispy noodle with beef and vegetables. To me, this looked unappealing but turned out great! The sauce was garlicky and full of flavour. I would definitely recommend it over their Pho. Great atmosphere, good food, terrible service. The host was average, nothing worth mentioning there, but our server made us laugh. While perusing the menu we asked her "What are beef balls?" (an option for the pho) and her answer was: "They are balls of beef" (thank you I got that from the name of the food), "except I don't think they're normal balls of beef because people say they have a funny taste". LOL...we didn't' bother asking anymore questions after that. The surprisingly poor service continued for the rest of the meal. I am giving this place 3 stars because servers change and this may have been a bad apple, and the rest of the experience was good. I ordered take out from Red Papaya and I was surprised at how quickly they had the food prepared and ready for me. I had the crispy noodles with Chicken and Shrimp and I was satisfied with the portions and the quality. I'll definitely return. I get lunch takeout here several times a month. Great food and reasonable prices. My only issue is that I always ask for sriracha sauce with my takeout and they only provide it half the time, and they always have tons of plastic forks and spoons but only have knives 10% of the time. This is an excellent local restaurant. Though the food is a tad pricey for a student (hence the missing fifth star) this restaurant features some of the best food in Guelph. If you decide to try this place out, I highly recommend the Spring rolls, best I've ever had. Everything on the menu is of excellent quality, and the friendly staff and atmosphere make dinner taste even better. The owner is a great guy, and frequently exits the back to talk with customers, which is pretty cool. Try this place out for an awesome meal. read more
