COVID review: there are not enough stars in the sky to underscore how hospital the staff at the Red Rooster Country Store. I made an unplanned stop here on my lunch break because I was having a really tough day and I needed one of their world class milkshakes to make it better. Of course my milkshake was great but the conversation and care that went into making the milkshake is the what really made my day!! Emotional eaters and foodies of all kinds this place is for you!! If you haven't already done so be sure to check them out!!

A bit of a 'hike' from the homefront, but who doesn't love a field trip on occasion? Red Rooster Country Store definitely made the trip worthwhile. A small spot that really packs a punch in terms of what is inside. Metal chicks and chickens are scattered around the outside area just begging for someone to take a picture with them. Once you step inside you might be tempted to just stand in the doorway taking it all in. But don't, because there is probably someone right behind you, and it's rude to stand and gawk. So, before you head off around the store, what are you looking for? Pillows, trinkets, or home decor? Check! Candies and snacks? Check! Jams, jellies, and sauces? Check! Refrigerated area for perishable items? Check! I know, it's totally overwhelming, but take your time and work through everything slowly. Personally, I went for the neopolitan covered pretzels and some peanut butter/chocolate dots (because, sing it with me folks, "I'm just a girl who can't say no"). The deli counter was hopping and I tried to time my lunch order with a break in the action. I brought my pirate's booty to the counter and asked about ordering lunch. The lovely lady at the counter asked if I had ever been there, and offered to place the order for me. She walked me through the process (there are a lot of options), and I ended up with a ham/swiss on sourdough. There are a number of small tables in the middle of the store where visitors can enjoy their meals. Taking my first bite of the sandwich, I was struck by all of the amazing flavors, and mainly the flavor of the tomatoes. Fresh and flavorful, it took a regular sandwich to a little bit of heaven. They also serve ice cream, but I did not partake (contrary to popular belief, I do have limits to my gluttony!). This is definitely a must-stop kind of place if you are in the area, and worth the trip if you aren't in the area!

Take me back in time... this little country store will have you thinking you're at Ike Godsey's on Walton's Mountain. Displays of jams and jellies, jars of local honey, old fashioned candies, farm fresh eggs, country décor and linens... and of course, lots of roosters! I got a little of everything! One thing this small store had that Ike didn't, was delicious, creamy, soft serve ice cream! My cone runneth over with a twist of chocolate and vanilla sweetness! There's also a fruit and veggie stand next door! I always like to support local farmers and businesses when I can. The owners were down right friendly, and their prices were fair! If you're ever traveling on 301, and see this tiny store on the side of the road, be sure to stop in and take a gander! Tell John Boy I said "hello"!

The inside of the store was old school setup with booths and a huge full service bar. 15 minutes within opening, the restaurant was full in capacity. The menu had lots of exciting brunch dishes, appetizers, salads, soups and deli section as well. There were plenty of cocktails, beer and wines choices available too. Prices were decent. I picked the Jewish Sailor that was a combo of toast with pastrami and beef sausage with red onion and mustard. When the dish came, it looked so scrumptious. Loved the flavor of the pastrami, the crunchy sausages, crispy toast bread, coleslaw all of it. I also got to try the pierogis that were delicious as well. The service was good overall. Our waitress was attentive, while managing several tables at the same time. The dishes came out quickly despite being busy. Overall the experience lived up to the expectations.

The place was moderately busy at the time we went! They were out of a couple beers on tap, so we opted for the sweet tea. The sweet tea wasn't sweet at all but we got it remade, although the sweetness was a bit weak! Our shrimp came out dry and a bit over cooked! The bologna burger has a huge thick asymmetrical cut of bologna with burning on the middle sides! I loved my reuben, mac and cheese, and onion rings though! Those were a hit. Beer pretzel was great! The cheese was a bit thick and had a film on top, but once you mixed it up it and put the film to the side, the cheese was normal! Next time i'd try a beer on tap and definitely get the mac and cheese again!

Turned out to be a good decision! Piggy's appears to be a pretty standard neighborhood grille and sports bar, serving sandwiches, salads, burgers, and a few other items along with a full complement of beers and mixed drinks. A lot of people were addressed by name while I was there, so clearly popular with the locals. Regardless, I got excellent service and was treated just as friendly as anyone else while sitting at the bar. Wanting to make things quick, I ordered a pair of hot dogs with chili, slaw, mustard, and onions. They have a lot of sides to choose from, but the bartender highly recommended the fries. My food came out quickly, and I was immediately taken aback at how big the hot dogs were! I have never seen a more loaded hot dog in my life. First of all, the frank looked like an all beef quarter pounder, and the bun was loaded to the brim with chili, slaw, onions. Had to be careful eating them, and a lot of the toppings spilled off, which made a nice topping for the fries. Great taste, the slaw is the kind I like, not much mayo. Chili was maybe a little cumin heavy, but I the buns were buttered and I really enjoyed the hot dogs overall. The fries though, they didn't steer me wrong. Honestly, some of the best french fries I have ever encountered. They are that slightly battered kind, crispy outside, tender inside, but they had a perfect blend of seasoning on them... and there were a lot of them. I have never struggled to eat a 2 hot dog combo in my life, but this one really filled me up. I did get a ranch to go with it, and this was the only disappointment, tasted like Kraft ranch. Maybe the craze over ranch ends at the VA line. All in all, this was an excellent road lunch stop. Definitely left full and ready to face the rest of my drive. Thanks for the distraction Piggys!

What to get: A Prosciutto sandwich with Fresh Mozzarella added, maybe What else: Expect an upcharge to add Fresh Mozz How to improve: Don't upcharge so much for Fresh Mozz (sigh) Nick's is a little run-down grocery store which sort-of feels like walking into a check-cashing shop or an urban convenience store that just happens to have a wonderful old-school NY-NJ style Italian deli inside. The deli itself is great, and makes a lot of awesome sandwiches for decent prices. As I said, I don't like the weird upcharges for certain ingredients, but so be it. It makes the prices of a sandwich soar from decent to ridiculous. The sandwiches aren't altogether authentic Italian NY-NJ style, but they are very good. I loved the parts of it that I had fresh, however when I had the rest of the sandwich a little later it had gotten extremely squidgy and soggy because they use a regular loaf of bread rather than anythng hard or Italian. Again, makes it less authentic but still very tasty. Despite these remarks, I haven't had a sandwich this good in the Richmond area before, so you should give it a try. And if it were Niche Produce, then they'd only sell unusual and hard to get hipster vegetables and sandwiches. Whereas if it wer Nix Produce, it would close down soon. And if it were Knickers Produce then I would have torn them down a lot more quickly and intensely than I did in this review.

Upon entering the restaurant, I was greeted by a very cheerful young lady. She answered my questions and provided great customer service. The restaurant appeared very clean and family friendly. I ordered the tavern club sliders, which were absolutely delicious!! You only get three but two filled me up. They come with ham and turkey and bacon on toasted bread slightly warmed. Sooo good! I didn't notice any individual desserts, but I noticed they had whole pies and cakes in the freezer. I would just like to request that y'all sell slices during lunch. I feel like they would sell. I also noticed pre packaged beans for soup. And I was told that y'all don't sell cooked soup but I would like to also recommend that maybe just during the winter months and see how it goes. The split pea soup looked really good on the bag and it's good for me because I'm single, but y'all didn't sell a cup or bowl of soup, little disappointing. Hopefully that's something y'all can look into. All in all, I had a great experience the food was delicious!
