This was ... yummy! I'm working three days a week here near Fremont and, because of the sucky parking, tend to walk a bunch after work. Because I had to pick up an order at FedEx, we started to walk back, trying to find a spot for dinner. Now, hubby had already been here with his youngest daughter a few weeks before but this was my first time. And, I'm so glad he talked me into it. I was so pleased to be able to find something I could eat -- and not only was it "food," it was YUMMY! I had the taco salad and I got a choice of meats. I had hoped for pork belly, but the upcharge was more than I wanted to pay so I settled for the carnitas instead. This was NOT settling, folks. The carnitas were so legit -- flavorful, moist...I did miss the crispy crust, but all around, this was a great protein. As it was, I almost didn't care about the rest of the salad, but it all came together great. I have to confess...forgive me Father, for I had chips...and they were SOOO good. Hot, fresh, crispy. It was more temptation than I could fight off. Can't wait to go back when I'm not carb-challenged. Both hubby and my "boat daughter" had the tacos and they were really happy with them. We had a great, quick, satisfying dinner, were able to walk to/from to burn off the carbs (me!) and weren't overwhelmed and stuffed from too much mediocre food. Met up with a friend for Taco Tuesday at Red Star. I'm frequently in the Fremont area, and I always noticed this restaurant on the street. I was super excited when my friend suggested we go. They're 21+ only, which is kinda Red Star requires proof of vaccination, and they check for it at the door! They also require masks. Our waitress was super friendly and pretty attentive. Although I didn't really plan on drinking, I ended up getting TWO of this vodka mango drink (which I'm not seeing on the menu so I can't share the name). The drink was really good and pretty sweet. It almost tasted like it had mango purée in it or something. It was a little thick/creamy in a way. For tacos, I stuck with the Taco Tuesday menu to cash in on some of those discounted tacos!!! I ordered one of each of the following: tequila lime chicken, carnitas, and sriracha honey tofu. My friend and I also got the chips and salsa to split (which were pretty good). The tequila lime chicken taco was definitely the best. The other two were a little disappointing. The carnitas didn't have much flavor -- it was pretty bland. I was most excited for the sriracha honey tofu, but that one let me down the most. It wasn't BAD, it just wasn't very good either... It didn't have a ton of flavor, and I wish it would've had more of the toppings (cabbage, pineapple, and cilantro). Although I wasn't super impressed with all of the tacos, I got a pretty good meal for a great price. We've always loved Fremont but don't make the trip as often as we should based on how great this place is! It was a beautiful Saturday & we decided to venture out & were lucky enough to get free parking where it looked like some great bars & restaurants were. We saw Red Star & were immediately drawn in. Aaron the bartender was so welcoming so we sat at the bar & ordered Pacifico's on draft & a shot of tequila & looked over the menu. We decided on 3 tacos for $12 - Buffalo chicken, short rib & Baja fish- amazing! Home made corn tortillas- so delicious! We also shared a queso tamale that came with tortilla chips both home made & so yummy! Nothing like a great homemade tamale! It had just the right amount of heat too. Our daughter met us later & we shared a Cadillac margarita- yum! We also got a carna asada taco & queso dip & both were delicious. We went to Red Star Taco Bar per Eater's recommendation on essential Fremont restaurants. I enjoyed the fact that their menu heading were "pre-taco", "taco", "post taco", and "taco-ish". Have to appreciate some taco humor. :) Things I liked: 1) Plentiful margarita options- including slushies! 2) Numerous taco options (there is only 1 veggie option though) 3) Prices were reasonable (3 tacos for $11) 4) Special deals like Taco Tuesday ($2 tacos) and Margarita Mondays I ordered the Baja Fish, Yucatan pork, and Carne Asada tacos. They were all solid choices. This is not your super traditional taco place but it is good. I really liked the Yucatan pork tacos (because in my humble opinion, there is no better taco than a pork taco). However, I am a lover of all tacos so I was content. My friends and I also split the Honey Sriracha wings- they were super delicious and packed with flavor. If you like spicy, you will enjoy these. We also split the chips & salsa & guac. I really liked their salsa because it was spicier than most salsa you get at Mexican restaurants. It was more blended (not pico de gallo) but had a strong peppery taste. The chips came nice and warm and were delicious. Overall, I really liked this place. It was casual, laid back, and affordable. The food was good and the drinks were tasty. I want to start by saying that the service here was very good and the server was incredibly nice. I walked in unexpectedly during a happy hour, where the price points for food and drink items were impressive. The drinks and the service were a 10/10 so if you are coming for that, this is the place to be. The food however, was very basic and bland. The tacos were 2 or 3 dollars, their were reduced priced margs, and other apps. Apparently they do margarita days on Monday and two dollar tacos on Tuesday. This is always greatly appreciated when you are traveling in an expensive city like Seattle! The three stars is for the food. It was just okay. I had ordered a bee's knees drink, and 4 tacos; the tequila lime chicken, carnitas, sweet potato black bean, and the tofu. Gotta try as much as I can right? xD As a group though we also got the chips, guac, and salsa as well. The bee's knees was good, the honey was there without being overbearing. It balanced well with the lemon. A very refreshing drink. A good way to start things after the heavy amount of whiskey that I had before the meal. I'd say out of the tacos the one that worked the best was the sweet potato black bean. The sweetness wasn't overbearing, the lettuce balanced well with it. The tofu taco was bland and the tofu itself had no character. I added salsa from the chips which worked well since really it needed something. The tequila chicken was dry but the other components kind of covered for it. It didn't stand out much to me, the rest of the taco shined more. The carnitas was good, the components to it added a good kick to the taco. The carnitas would be second out of them I'd say. I think onions would do wonders for it though to add a texture element to it and a burst of flavor for the taco. The chips were good and crunchy also, guac was decent. I'd say the salsa that was included was more akin to a mole. Pretty earthy. Personally I like a less robust salsa for chips. The nachos were very good and my favorite part of the meal! The refried beans had a really good flavor and their were good portions of everything on the nachos. My chicken tacos were good and had a serving of chicken. The chicken was nice and flavorful and not too dry. I've been here three times, and after the last experience won't be coming back. Drinks are always good, but the service has always been slow in my experience - which isn't too much of a deal breaker but our last server (tall redhead with a buzz cut) was very rude to my girlfriend and her friend. Immediately made a sarcastic comment when we started to order, and gave the girls attitude when they asked where the restrooms were. Definitely did not deserve the tip I gave him... Tacos! Red Star is an easy go to taco spot. They have great options for tacos, and taco-ish items. The nachos are a delicious shareable start. The tequila lime chicken and the carne asada are my favorite of the tacos. The sriracha honey shrimp are also super tasty but the shrimp can be a miss tasting a little more 'frozen shrimp' quality than I prefer sometimes. The jalepeno margarita is delicious! Red Star redemption yay!! We went back after months of being taco-deprived. Although with our favorite tacos, we ordered a Korean short rib quesadilla and it was amazinggggg! Best quesadilla I've ever had and I'm really glad that it comes with two pieces instead of three, because we definitely would have fought over it. Service is still friendly and even when it isn't speedy it's understandable because a) they are almost always crowded and b) the food is so worth it. Price is fantastic for the quality and serving sizes. My boyfriend and I now order our own quesadillas, and I tell him he can't go get them without me :) read more

I'd give Red Star a solid 3.5 stars, but I'm bumping it up to 4 because A) I'm a big fan of the R&Bish music that they were playing, B) the happy hour prices are pretty affordable, and C) our waitress was nice. My friend and I arrived on a Friday around 5 to take advantage of happy hour. The interior was full! We managed to snag the last indoor table--they do have outdoor seating in the back. As much as I wanted an adult beverage I went the healthy route and stuck to good ole agua. For food we split a basket of chips with salsa ($3), and I ordered two veggie tacos ($5). The chips and salsa was nothing special. The chips weren't freshly made, or at least it didn't seem like it, and the salsa was a little thin for my liking. It was edible though, and I'm a sucker for crunchy, salty snacks. For variety I chose one Sweet Potato Black Bean Taco and one Sriracha Honey Tofu Taco. The Sweet Potato Black Bean Taco included a corn tortilla, sweet potatoes (not the orange variety apparently), lettuce, cilantro, and salsa verde. I enjoyed the flavors and would order this taco again. The Sriracha Honey Tofu Taco was composed of a corn tortilla, soft sriracha honey tofu bits, cabbage, diced pineapple, and cilantro. This taco was on the sweeter end of the spectrum due to the honey + pineapple combo. I enjoyed the sweet potato bean taco more, although the tofu is decent if you're craving a unique meatless option. (I believe both are plant-based, minus the honey component.) The atmosphere is just a bar with Mexican(ish) food. I wouldn't call it festive per se, although if you're wandering around the area it's not a bad choice, especially for happy hour. Be sure to take advantage of the hot sauces! read more

Racist and unwelcoming host refused to let us in because we didn't have Washington IDs. I checked online and international driving licenses are considered valid photo IDs in the state (which is the one we show to the host). Now apart from that, there is other IDs that we could show and that would considered valid legal documents if we were given the option to do, the host didn't even tried to offer this, once he saw where we are from he gave is the "get out of here" face. Have never experienced this in this state before, not in any other state either. We go to bars everyday using our international driving licenses. So again, racism and hate is something the host in this bar need to get rid off. read more

On our most recent visit, we encountered the bartender that Darnit Y succinctly describes as the "slowest, laziest most useless excuse for a service industry worker in all of Ballard". And as I opened my mouth to provide a food order, he ran off to be with his friends again. I waited about 15 more minutes - and then made the grave infraction of interrupting the bartender's conversation to ask if we could place an order. He snapped at me angrily, how dare he sully his hands to do work. Work is for the proletariat, as he stormed off huffily. When he came back, I asked him to just bring the check for the one beer, since he was too busy talking to his friends. Oh boy - his buddy the white knight was suddenly activated. He stood up and started yelling, really giving the rest of the restaurant a show. Swearing like a sailor as he rose to the lazy bartender's defense, until even the subject of his affection was blushing at this pathetic display. After I grew bored of this show, we departed and went to Galo's up the street. There's so much other Mexican inspired food nearby. TNT, Pecado Bueno, Pablo Y Pablo, and others. With Red Star raising its prices recently, I see little reason to return. Especially while the lazy bartender perches behind the counter. EDIT: Thank you for your completely pointless response. The fact that you consider this service to be exceptional, despite additional complaints about the exact same bartender, is absolutely hilarious. Though the fact that you consider criticisms of your business to be a greater offense than poor customer service in your own words, is incredible, albeit unsurprising. If we take your "timestamps" at face value and I was indeed there for less time, that does not negate the complaint. While I wasn't timing every checkpoint of our visit with a stopwatch, since I wasn't foreseeing getting into an argument with a recalcitrant owner, time did drag on as your bartender ignored us in favor of the party on our left. Including while he was "making drinks". What drink is on your menu that takes 5 minutes to make? Give me a break. Don't worry, I won't be back. But if you want to survive in an increasingly competitive downtown Fremont with increasing number of restaurants, a slice of humble pie might be in order. Sad to change my review about this place. I really liked coming here, but my most recent experience left me feeling pretty put off. We sat down at the bar for dinner and the bartender seemed really preoccupied with his "friends" at the bar. After some time, he handed us one food menu for a two-person party - which I felt was super weird. Then we waited some more and watched him leisurely make drinks for a busy night, and he takes forever to check on us. When he finally decides to come around and grace us with his presence, my hubby orders a beer, and we get 10-15 more minutes of waiting. The bartender sure was busy talking to his buddies at the bar for the past 20 minutes. He finally brings the beer, and we're decided on food. But of course he is too busy in his own world, and completely ignores us. My husband pointed out that we were trying to order, and the bartender got offended. We figured we'd leave at that point, but then his friend started yelling at us, making a scene. The bartender shouldn't have his friends at the bar, and he displayed a serious lack of professionalism. We won't be coming back. :( read more

Showed up for taco Tuesday and was told it would be a 45min wait, it ended up only being 10 minutes. Please know that if you are sensitive to heat, their tacos are pretty spicy, and their menu does not state it. Really good prices and filling. The tacos tend to be a little wet, as the add a lof of salsa. I got a pomegranate margarita slush and it was delish! I think they made have gone light on the tequila though. Can be a little loud in there, but to be fair it is a bar environment. Our server rarely check n us, and I had to flag someone down to bring the extra lime I had already asked for. Parking is horrendous, as it is in Fremont... but there's usually a few spaces behind on the residential street. read more

Five stars purely for the fact that they have quite the variety of Slushie margaritas which is definitely a favorite of mine. I had Carnitas tacos and my friend had the vegetarian. Carnitas are my favorite and they were great! I didn't try my friends but she said she very much enjoyed the sweet potato black bean tacos. Chips and salsa were OK, although I feel like chips and salsa is very hit or miss for people depending on what thickness of chip and how crunchy, salty etc. we came a couple hours right before the solstice parade, so there was plenty of seating available on a Saturday mid day, this definitely seems like the place it would get busy during normal business hours, however as mentioned previously the slushies alone would be worth a return visit. I don't live in this neighborhood, so I feel like if you lived in the area it would be pretty easy to get to, but I always feel like parking in Fremont is kind of a nightmare. read more

My girlfriend and I eat here all the time. I swear this place has the best tacos I have ever had and I come from Texas. Just recently We started branching out into the menu, we found that the short rib quesadillas will literally make your mouth orgasm!!
