Exterior - shares interior with Ballard Liquor Store (10/5/24)
    Marie B.

El Taco Loco was a long time bookmark. However, a recent Yelp post from Ashley where ETL catered her baby shower was so compelling I finally stopped by Saturday afternoon (10/5/24). There is no shortage of taco trucks or brick & mortars, but my fave up in Edmonds had changed ownership. I was in search of another taco spot. Since I was in the Ballard/Sunset Hill vicinity and haven't had breakfast or lunch yet, coming up on 2pm. Perfect timing! [[HIGHLIGHT]]El Taco Loco has fairly spacious food prep and indoor dining areas in a shared space with the Ballard Liquor Store. There's also some outdoor seating.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Because of two parties ahead of me, I was able to consider my menu choices. Counter person was very welcoming. I decided on the #1 four tacos with choice of meat (steak/carne asada) and a soda (Sprite). Dining onsite, this was served on an actual plate. I was also handed napkins and a chilled squeeze bottle of salsa verde. Flavorful with the minced onion and cilantro with the first taco. Then the second, third, and fourth. I was checked upon which was appreciated. But it was evident with my clean plate except for used lime wedges, all was good. Just an fyi, there's a taco platter available for $80. Great for sharing, party potluck, picnic idea. I returned the salsa container as I bussed my table. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It's very efficient to have the trash, recycle, compost containers and dish tub by the exit.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I thanked the counter person. Props to the gentleman who prepped my taco order. Thanks again to Ashley for her well written review. Patted my happy stomach walking to my car. All ready for the UW-Michigan game. Go Huskies!

This spot is located inside the liquor store. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It's very clean inside![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Food is really tasty (pretty big portion). The workers are so sweet and hard working. Please check this place out!

So excited for this new location. Great food! Worried there's going to be a line this summer.

Having lived in California for a long time, I really missed good Mexican food once I moved to Seattle. I am SO HAPPY I found this place. Probably the best quesadilla I've had in Seattle hands down. So so so good. And everyone was so nice. Definitely coming back. I got the chicken quesadilla and added veggies.

I cannot believe I found legitimate street tacos in this neighborhood. Service was also so great and [[HIGHLIGHT]]I love that it's in a random liquor store.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Because of course it is. 10/10.

fast, friendly and damn delish! who knew the taco joint in the liquor store would be some of the best mole i have ever had! barbacoa taquitos and mole carnitas. nom nom!

Nice local spot, located in a convenient store (there's a window so you can also order from outside). Very friendly staff; they seem to be a family business. Tried a few of their tacos m. Carnitas, carne asada and al pastor were all solid, with good taste and texture. The al pastor hit the spot with all the right flavors, only wish they used a trompo, but still delicious! Their salsa was great too, good heat and thick (I feel like a lot of places in Seattle use watery salsa). Will definitely be back.

El Taco Loco is a hidden gem. Located in the Ballard Liquor Store, there are signs in front of the store with pictures of tacos, indicating that this liquor store has Mexican food. What? Sounds a little odd, but it's true and it's oh-so good. El Taco Loco is one of those authentic taco places that you just know it's made with a lot of TLC the moment you meet the owner and watch how its prepared. It's definitely worth seeking the next time you're in Ballard. I visited El Taco Loco for lunch on a Thursday after visiting the nearby Nordic Museum. I only knew about El Taco Loco, thanks to the wonderful Yelpers on here! I wanted to find a place near the museum for a cheap lunch and Yelp did not steer me wrong. There's a small counter in the liquor store, with a huge menu of the items El Taco Loco offers. In addition to tacos are traditional meals like quesadillas, burritos, enchiladas, etc... On Tuesdays you can get four tacos for seven bucks. But all the meals are less than 13 bucks, with tax and tip. I ordered four tacos, two carnitas and two al pastor, which didn't take long to get. Inside the store is a small eating area, as well as the counter's bar space. They also have two different salsas, which are both worth trying. The heat was definitely there! I enjoyed my tacos; both meats were very good. Buuutttt if I had to pick a favorite I would say the al pastor was the way to go! I loved the pineapple addition and the seasoned spice on it was fantastic. Both meats were super tender and flavorful, and truly what make the tacos worth seeking! I'm glad I found El Taco Loco. They serve fantastic authentic Mexican favorites, and the owner is the nicest person. She seemed to genuinely care about all the customers who came in, and recognized repeat customers. Love the wonderful customer service and the delicious food! Make your way here when you're in Ballard...or if you need liquor. Whatevs.

Just a quick note to say this amazing restaurant has moved down the street, and is now a taco truck in the liquor store parking lot. Same great food and great service!

Although it's naturally very fatty, the flavor and juiciness was retained after cooking - so they didn't screw it up. The salsa verde was a very nice accompaniment, as it tasted light, fresh, and a good complement to the fat of the meat. The mole enchiladas were less good. The mole sauce used leaned way too heavily on a sweet flavor - having little to no nuttiness whatsoever. It didn't taste anywhere close to some of the best moles I've had. The enchilada underneath was fine - nothing special. Both dishes came with beans and rice. Both were slightly above average, but nothing to write home about. I would say the portions were well sized in terms of overall amount, but the enchiladas were quite small compared to the beans and rice. With these two dishes we ended up around 28 per person. Overall, it's average Mexican food. 6.5/10

(those burritos are massive omg.) the mole enchiladas were SOOO good, as were the cashew poblano enchiladas. their sauces are so yummy and the presentation was on-point for both enchiladas. i also had a bite of my friend's carne en morita which is a slow cooked pork dish, and i was obsessed. the only thing i'd say to pass on would be the tacos. drinks were also great and had amazing presentation. i was very satisfied with my carajillo and my friend's passion fruit mojito was also very tasty (you could NOT taste the alc in it i swear) overall, koko's is a great spot if you're looking to dress up for a cute night out but also craving some tasty mexican food.

After that, we got our baked potato with every single topping you can think of, including Wagyu carne asada. This dish is big enough to be a meal for one on its own and aside from a twice baked potato, this is probably the best type of baked potato you can get, considering how all the toppings go together. We also got a corn and pepper dish that tasted pretty good, but the star of the night was the porterhouse. For $99, the 38 or so ounce steak was the highlight of the night. Before it seemed like Maiz Molino was focusing on elevated, unique Mexican dishes (shown in the pics in my prior review such as short rib, and other sort of "fusion" dishes, and more seafood focused, etc.) Now, the menu seems way more generic and casual like enchiladas, tacos, quesadillas, tamales, etc. just offered w/ different proteins. They are still focusing on maiz but just a bit more generic in the preparation and offerings. Also, they had 2 separate menus which was a bit confusing. One is a generic all day menu and then another menu had brunch and dinner on it. It was around 5:30 p.m. but they were out of a particular steak dish that we were interested in. Service was friendly. We had enchiladas, a dip sampler (for appetizer) and Tlacoyos. Everything was fine but nothing really stood out, sadly. It wasn't very busy while we were there, so hoping that they are doing ok as a business. I would love to come back if they brought back the old menu w/ things that you cannot really find elsewhere, including the great cocktail menu and desserts that were offered previously.

Andrew (our server) introduced us to his sidekick, who was in training. Love that personal, hands on approach for a mew team member, and Sidekick did a great job in monitoring our table and replenishing water. Have to stop here and express my appreciation for Andrew and how he took the time to explain the philosophy and genuine team vibe of the restaurant. Oftentimes when a restaurant adds a flat 20% gratuity, you get the feeling this is not passed on to the servers. Not so here. He explained that it's shared among the servers, bar, and other staff, with only a bit retained by management, but even that finds its way into their wages. Terrific work environment and happy to see it. It definitely shows in the level of service. But we're here to eat. Didn't take a picture, but one of my dining companions ordered the burrito with red chili sauce and it was very good. Just the right amount of heat in the sauce. The Cantina celebrates Taco Tuesday, so I took advantage of this. You get the opportunity to try 5 different street tacos for the low price of $15. For another $4 you order it fully loaded which is a steal (guac, pickled onions, lettuce, giardano, crema, and another lovely sauce). Each of the tacos were really delicious and packed full of flavor. I especially enjoyed the cauliflower and the beef. Was surprised how much I liked the popcorn chicken - still juicy and not greasy in the least. Andrew treated us to a round of the hatch green chili. I was delighted because it was a dish I wanted to try. He described it perfectly: a little kick, but you can't stop eating it. He was right. A bowl of this in the winter with their cornbread (which I'm confident will be delicious) will preempt a winter cold. The sauces on the table are not to be ignored either. The green chili sauce was fruity with a little heat, the scorpion chili brings the heat, but their homemade chili oil is phenomenal. I could put this on everything. In short, the Cantina delivers. Excellent food, knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and fun staff, and a cool vibe. I'll bet the cocktails will also be good. Definitely adding to the regular rotation!
