Was passing through Lexington and wanted to try some bbq. Did a quick search and this place came up at the top of the list. It's a cool looking joint, friendly service and they was busy. That's always a good sign, right? Let me just say that on my worst days at the pit my bbq is way better than what we got yesterday. The brisket was so dry and hard that even our cat wouldn't eat it. The ribs were better, had good flavor and the right amount of "pull". The "frickles" were greasy and half the order was just fried batter droppings with no pickles. I'm a firm believer in supporting local establishments and my boyfriend chose Red State BBQ on our trip from Lexington to Louisville this weekend. It was a total dive atmosphere and we loved it! The writing on the walls down to the special BBQ sauce did not disappoint. The service was excellent and attentive. The BBQ was delicious! We even had the banana pudding for dessert. We loved the BBQ sauce so much that we bought two to go. It is called Taproom Fire. YUM! If you find yourself in the Georgetown area, don't be dissuaded by the run down motel in the back or the way the restaurant looks from the outside. The food will change your mind in a minute! I have heard about this specific BBQ place for years and never actually had their Q. My co worker and I had just a few minutes before our meeting at work and decided to stop in here for some quick lunch. He got a 3 veggie samplier (corn pudding, green beans, and mac n cheese) with a piping hot bowl of smoked chili. I ordered a beer cheese brisket sandwich and beer cheese grits. Before you ask...Yes I am from Winchester. Beer cheese flows in my veins. The food was great and tasty. Very moist and hit the spot. The staff here was helpful and attentive. When you drive up to this specific place, don't drive back off. It does look a bit super creepy. It is surrounded by a sketchy Bates Motel looking thing or a place were many murders may or may not have taken place, but don't let that scare you off. The bbq is worth the risk. LOL The dinning room inside is filled with graffiti and names and pictures and ink. Pretty cool. This is a prime example to not to judge a book by its cover. Sketchy outside, crime scene interior, but great food. Win win win. Stop in and support local. Food here is on point. They do their BBQ right. read more

Stopped on a Wednesday evening 6:30 little crowd with a few booths open.Ordered Sliced brisket and pulled chicken,food came right out and it was all cold except the Mac and cheese.This was not sliced brisket,it was most likely chuck roast that was braised.No brisket texture,no smoke ring.Pulled chicken was pretty dry too.Won't be back. read more

This was my first visit to Red State BBQ, and I have to say I'm disappointed. I had ordered a 1/2 each of ribs, baked beans, and potato salad. The ribs had no flavor, and tasted like they had been cooked in an oven, instead of a pit. This is even after adding the one small container of bbq sauce. (Memphis sweet). Ordered food to be catered on 01/23/20 for our Georgetown Office Staff at PMDS. Sarah Back (Catering Director) is awesome to work with and had everything coordinated perfectly and our lunch went off without a hitch!!! The food was AMAZING (I've never gotten anything that wasn't there) and we had LOTS of happy employees, some of which had never tried Red State prior to our luncheon. Had a craving for wings and ordered some buffalo wings for take out and I am blown away!! Big wings perfectly cooked,seasoned and sauced. The sauce was perfect not too hot, had a sweetness to it and left just a little tingle afterwards Super friendly staff on the phone and at up. This will be my new go to Wing stop. read more

Stopped here on a road trip on my way to Tennessee. Probably the best pulled pork I've ever had (I am very picky about pulled pork). Good texture on the meat not mushy like a lot of places. I also added the slaw on my sandwich. Took a long time to get my order (much longer wait than we were told on the phone) but they were very friendly and the food was amazing! read more

I have ate here twice, both times at work. We had Red State catered. The first time was HORRIBLE. We had pulled pork, brisket and pulled chicken. All 3 were DRY but the brisket was so dry I threw it away. The second time was much better. We had pulled pork and brisket with baked beans and shells and cheese as sides. This time the brisket was much better. It was tender, tho a little over cooked. The slices would fall apart when picked up, which is a sign of over doneness. The pork was better the 2nd time around as well, though still not up to par. Overall I was not impressed. I work night shift and our lunch is at 9:45. Maybe that had something to do with it. We are so happy that we found Red State BBQ and were able to have them cater our wedding! Sarah was very detailed and organized during the entire process and executed the buffet perfectly. Several months prior to our wedding, we went for a tasting and Sarah made sure we were able to try mostly every item on the menu and pick exactly what we wanted to have served. My husband is extremely picky with his food but was instantly hooked on the pulled pork and mac n' cheese from here. The food was a sensation at our wedding! I am torn by Red State BBQ. The brisket was excellent, but the pork was mediocre at best. I was fortunate to snap some of the double smoked brisket for my two meat platter. I should have went with my brisket instincts and stayed away from the pulled pork. The brisket was full of fat filled juicy flavor coated in spicy burnt crust. It was some of the best brisket I have had. The pulled pork was another story. It was dry and lacking of flavor. Pork should be much more tender and moist than this was. The sides were also a hit and miss. The baked beans were top notch. I inhaled them before I finished my meat. Sweat with just enough spice and heat, definitely get the beans as one of your sides. The Mac and cheese was forgettable, not bad, but not anything to write home about either. read more

One of our favorite BBQ places! We always try to stop in to get our BBQ fix whenever we're in the Georgetown/Lexington area. It looks like a dive, but the food inside is AMAZING! Try the pulled pork sandwich with the KY small batch BBQ sauce, a side of beer cheese grits, and a cold Ale-8 ...you won't regret it Great customer service and friendly employees. I've been looking for a place to satisfy my inner culinary werewolf that arises once in a full moon. So far this is the closest place to achieving that. After a mountain of recommendations I traveled out to Georgetown to come and experience this dive. Calling this place a dive is no way an insult, it's charming, hospitable and everything a dive should be. From what I was told they do daily specials but I ended up getting their double meat plate. I got the shredded pork and chicken both of which was smoked to perfection. The mac and cheese was tasty but the fries were not something I'd order again. One thing I did love was the ambience of it all. From the literal writings on the wall to the not so charming motel next door. The place screams a dive in the middle of nowhere and has no shame about it. Which can only be respected. So many places now a days try to be a dive with finesse, and I'm one of the many who is over that oxymoron. What you see is what you get here. And that's a humbling experience. You get great food at a somewhat reasonable price. The service is hit or miss. I've either had the really sweet waitress or the also very sweet guy at the checkout who seems to forget half the order. I can see why this place remains successful because it does what people want, serve good food and provide a place for people to come and relax away from the hustle and bustle of our lives. Is this a place I would come to every day? No. But it's definitely one I'd recommend to anyone driving through the area and looking for a great place to eat. read more

We came to Red State out of fantastic recommendations from clients and my boyfriend's dad. We had a delicious basket of food! I got the brisket which was tender, juicy, and succulent. We tried all of their sauces but fell in love with their Kentucky Small Batch sauce. Sweet yet tangy which compliments the smoke of the meat perfectly. The baked beans were very delicious and the green beans were good. My boyfriend had their mac and cheese and collard greens. He refused to share if that tells you anything. For dessert, we had peach bread pudding. Oh my God...it was literally the cherry on top of the whole meal! It was so good that we promised never to share it when we go back! Parking is shared with a small hotel on a back road from Lexington to Georgetown. Dining space is limited but they move people in and out in a reasonable time.
