We prefer to use a reliable taxi business, rather than save a bit using the exploitative rideshare model with questionable ethics and oversight. My complaint stems from being charged for idling. We had a 3:15 AM pickup to IAD. I received a call from the driver at 3 AM saying he couldn't find our house. I described where on the block we were located and went out to the street to make it easier for him. My spouse and I had our luggage and personal items all ready to go at 3, so we got loaded into the vehicle quickly and were off a bit before our target time of 3:15. When we got to Dulles, I noticed there was a charge for 15 minutes of idling (it was $15 I think?). It seemed unfair to me that we were penalized for the driver's difficulty finding my location. I didn't mention it at the time because I didn't want conflict at the outset of our vacation. We were happy he was early and he was not a reckless driver. I've used Red Top for over 30 years and will continue to use them in the future, but I did not think the extra charge was fair. read more

I prebook with them. It's hit or miss as to when they arrive but usually they arrive 10 minutes early then annoy you with phone calls and texts that they have arrived and they are waiting---which would be fine if they weren't bugging me 10 minutes ahead of scheduled time. Today I had scheduled a cab to arrive at 530pm (booked it last night). No cab. At 540, the driver calls and says I'm on my way. Just a few minutes. TWENTY minutes after the call, he arrives. A full 1/2 hour after scheduled time. He advised us that he "just got the call at 540". I called the office. Their answer was "we were really backed up today because of the weather". We had a rain shower today around 4pm---just a rain shower. So I suggested that someone could have called us at 5pm so we could have made other arrangements. Driver in McLean Va. angry when he called and told me I should be on the other side of bldg, and I should have told operator. I gave the operator the exact address where I was standing in front of the public bldg. that I was looking while speaking to him. He said he could not pick me up at the front address where I had been promised an early pickup. I said Lyft was picking people up as I was standing at that moment in front of the promised location. What was the problem? He said he would drive around. He was angry picking me up. His car was not a Red Top vehicle but a black car with the number on the right front of his vehicle that was given by Red Top on their text, and his car tag matched. (I had asked when reserving the quick pickup if the vehicle would be clearly marked as a Red Top taxi. Operator said Yes--but it wasn't. Only a number on the front right of vehicle with a matching vehicle tag.) He arrived Angry. He yelled about my not being on the opposite side of the building. I said it was my first time at location. First time calling red top cab from that public spot. He is mad. He said my fare was already an additional 5.00. I asked him to pull over and let me out. It's been a while since we needed an early morning ride to the airport so was a bit shocked to see so many negative reviews for Red Top on Yelp. However went ahead and booked it anyway - had to call because the online booking is still not working (this time couldn't choose AM or PM). They now have an automated recording asking you to state the pickup address which also didn't work because it refused to recognize my address. Eventually did manage to reach an operator and made the reservation for the following morning and received a text confirmation. As usual they texted when the car was dispatched and the driver arrived about 15 minutes ahead of the scheduled time so it was reassuring. Ride was uneventful and we paid by credit card in the cab (they seem to also have a contactless option but haven't tried it). Anyway based on this experience I would continue to consider Red Top to be my first choice for airport transfers. Only areas I hope they'll improve is to make online booking work and get rid of the automated phone recording requiring you to provide a pick up address before reaching an operator. read more

Had to get to the airport very early and couldn't get an Uber that could accommodate 5 passengers and associated luggage. These guys picked right up and had a mini-van to me in minutes. In pre-Uber days, the dispatchers were astoundingly rude, but now, due to the introduction of game-changing competition (e.g., Uber, Lyft), they've definitely cleaned up their act. The dispatcher was pretty polite, and the driver was pretty good. The worst part of the experience was paying by credit card, which is a little on the old-school side and could use some modernization. read more

I prefer the Red Bottom Cab, because all the fancy girls ride around in it. In fact, Prince used to ride around in these things. Back when the cabs were all Corvettes. He called them Little Red Top Corvettes. I used to live in this area and I didn't have a car for a couple of years, so I was able to enjoy all the different types of cabs on offer. One thing they all have in common is that they are all expensive. That could be said about cabs anywhere but especially in DC. Sometimes comparable to New York. Red Top's service has consistently declined over the past several months. Wait times have increased dramatically. It sometimes takes up to 45 minutes or more for a taxi to even be assigned which was never the case in the past. The phone system for ordering a taxi gets worse with each new update as well. This company used to be reliable and now it is a coin toss whether you will get a ride in anything like a reasonable amount of time. It's really appalling. read more

I have had great service from Red Top in the past so I expected the same when I booked 24+hours in advance for a cab to The Kennedy Center from Arlington near EFC Metro. I received a confirmation but not text the day of alerting me my status. I should have known there was a problem. I called 10 minutes after my scheduled pick up and waited for an operator. I was told basically that the drivers have the choice of accepting rides and that no one wanted this fare. I didn't even know this could occur and was definitely not notified that there was an issue. Luckily I was able to book an Uber and get downtown but later than we needed. We were on time for the show but missed a pre show "event" that was an important part of the performance. The courtesy of a notification that a cab was not available should have been given so that we could make arrangements to arrive on time. I don't recommend Red Top if you've got to be somewhere on time. Perhaps they should stop allowing early booking that way you would know immediately that you needed to look elsewhere for a dependable ride. Red Top you just lost a regular customer. read more

We set up a ride at 4:15 am to National. At 4:13 we called about the cab. We were told completely unapologetically that there was no cab available and they did not know when one would be. Made a reservation with a friend who is wheelchair bound two weeks before our arrival (Because I know how important her chair is and that advanced warning is often necessary!) Not only was our "reservation" not on time, apparently it's some sort of ride share-like option where drivers decide when and whether to take patrons. "Reservations given priority" isn't a reservation! Why have the option available on the site then? Again, I know that accessibility is sometimes difficult, but this company seemed to make it worse! After several calls about where our ride was, I got hung up on while trying to find out further information, especially why we were allowed to reserve an accessible ride if there wasn't going to be one available. If I could give zero stars I would! We ended up taking the metro which took longer than a direct ride, but 45 minutes after my reservation to still have no vehicle confirmed on the way, it was better than waiting into the evening. Called and booked my cab the night before. And chose the pre pay option which meant they would debit my card at pick up. No problem. I had to be at the airport for an early morning show. There wasn't a car on the road. Called them just after 4am and asked them where my taxi was. A girl in what sounded like a middle eastern accent said they were having trouble getting cabs. I asked her if that meant my cab which I had reserved the night before online and which hadn't warned me of any issues was coming. Her answer was "Maybe." Don't bother with this cab company. If they can't be bothered to notify you when they're having issues and can't give you an answer as to if it will arrive then they are clearly not reliable, and are not a company you want to use. Disastrous. I grew up in Arlington and thought I could trust this cab company to pick up my 88 year old father at the hospital at the emergency exit (I am in a different city). I confirmed in advance that they would at least go in and let them know they were there to pick him up. Not only did their system of connecting to the driver didn't work ("sorry, that is not working now") but once i tried serveral times, the driver hung up on me before I even spoke a word. Then the cab driver didn't even get out of the car, nor help my father out of his wheelchair, let alone get out of his car to go inside to tell the passenger he arrived. That is on top of their app telling me it was going to be there in 2 minutes, then 3 more minutes, then 5 minutes. Totally irresponsible and terrible service. read more

Apparently Red Top, Merriam and I have a much different idea of what constitutes a "reservation." Reserved (what I thought was a cab) through their website day before for a 7:45 pick up. 7:46 received text that car was on the way. Clicked link in text, and totally unexpectedly, the Trackmy.Limo app popped up showing that driver, in a Honda Civic (?), was on his way and would be there in 14 minutes - 15 minutes past my (I thought) reserved pick-up time, and NOT a cab but some kind of ride share? Dunno. He never showed. The Trackmy.Limo app froze after the first time so could not track car. At 8:05 called dispatcher and told they were "still looking for a driver," probably there in 20 minutes. That would have missed our 8:30 bus departure from Vienna, but we were lucky enought to draft our neighbor at the last minute to get us there. Crisis averted. We understand things happen. We understand that staffing in every industry is incredibly difficult right now. But, if you can't reliably, consistently offer a time-sensitive service, stop pretending you can (multiple other reviews suggest that mine was not an isolated issue). A simple warning on your website that you can't guarantee reserved times during rush hours would enable folks to make informed decisions. That's really a problem when we have to sit for a long time waiting for a replacement cab. You might not have a lot of choices so just be sure to speak to someone and arrange to be picked up only in a wheelchair taxi if that's what you need. This is the worst taxi company that I have ever dealt with. We traveled from Australia to Arlington, VA to attend a reunion of The Old Guard (US 3rd Infantry) who amongst other things - guard the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. We booked a taxi to pick us up outside the Hatfield Gate at Ft Myer, VA as a female Red Top manager told me that Red Top would no longer enter the base. The booking was for 1815 as we had to be at the Sheraton Pentagon City before 1830. At 1825 we rang and waited for about 15 minutes as we were placed in a que. We were advised that Red Top was trying to find a driver and our taxi and it would be another 30 - 45 minutes. before we were picked up. In the meantime my wife, in an evening gown and I in a suit stood around as there were certainly no seats of any type to sit on. There were however, two of those 'rental scooters' that seem to be popular and so we took our photos and sent them to friends back in Australia. Numerous taxis passed by but all were taken. Then, out of the blue a taxi passed us and gave us a wave, we had no idea what this meant but after about 15 - 20 minutes this taxi stopped in front of us and kindly drove us to the Sheraton Pentagon City. We arrived after introductions, welcomes, etc and literally began to eat our dinners. Our story did not end there. We were told that all we needed to do was ring Red Top when we wanted to return to Ft Myer and we would be picked up. This never happened as the hotel concierge rang Red Top around 2300 and she was told that NO taxis were available. We waited for about another hour as attempts were made to find us transport. This failing we actually started to walk to Ft Myer, even though this meant walking on the side of a four (4) lane highway. Luckily for us before we actually got all the way down the ramp to the highway two men who had been at the reunion saw us and stopped to pick us up. Needed a cab from Arlington Hospital to my home in McLean.Red Top courtesy phones at the Hospital were not in working order so a receptionist secured a Red Top Cab for me before 6 A M. The dispatcher send an SUV with a step that was probably 10 inches high.As a 93-yr. old I made several attempts to enter the cab with the driver looking bemused and offering no help whatsoever.There was no movable step offered or personal assistance.The result was me loosing the grip on the handle and flying backwards from the cab to the concrete of the Emergency Entrance. Wound up in Emergency care for several hrs.No bones were broken, but co nsiderable pain persists days after þis incident.I notified the Cab Co. , but no apology has been forthcoming. I've never had a bad experience with Red Top Cab. While their cabs are not always the newest and shiniest - overall they do a good job. In the past - I used them for work when I needed a cab to pick me up in Centreville, VA and take me to Dulles International Airport. Always on time - some times even a few minutes early. This week was the first time I used them for personal business. After I dropped my vehicle off at Moore Automotive - I called them for a cab. They told me on the phone it would be at least 20 minutes. Seven minutes later the cab they sent for me rolled in! I had an interesting conversation on the way home with the cab driver - he was an elderly man - I am guessing of Persian pursuasion - he had National Public Radio (NPR) playing on the stereo - they were having an indepth discussion about how Hip Hop artists frequently use the "n" word and how they don't seem to be held to the same standard as the recently fired Don Imus. We discussed music all the way to Centreville and had a rather leisurely drive as cab rides go. Today, I called Red Top again to pick me up and take me to Moore Automotive in Fairfax to pick up my Honda. This time I was picked up by a large man sporting a very blonde head of hair, his name was Yuri Alex (something/insert last name here). And he had what sounded like Russian Opera playing full blast when I got into the cab. I didn't say anything about the excessive volume. I wanted to wait and see if he would adjust it down on his own. He did after a couple of minutes without my saying anything - although it was still just a tad to loud. He played it all the way to Fairfax! It was somewhat amusing - I have no idea what is being sung in Russian Opera. He was also a very aggressive driver - I was concerned when we got out on I-66. We scheduled a ride for a wheelchair accessible van 24 hours in advance for an appointment, only to have everything turn into, in the most polite terms, a total fustercluck. To begin with, we scheduled our ride 15 minutes early, just in case things didn't go smoothly. Past the time which our cab was scheduled to arrive, we received a call informing us that we would have to wait an additional 30 to 60 minutes for our ride. After that hour had passed we received another call, this one asking if we were still waiting for our car. When asked if there was any point in reserving a ride ahead of time, and remember that this was specifically for a wheelchair accessible vehicle, the response was a decidedly indifferent, "No, we don't keep track of those things." Now we are trying to reschedule an appointment for a specialist medical treatment, and ultimately missing out on a weekend vacation, because these chucklebunnies can't be bothered to keep a schedule. After waiting 5 minutes for the taxis, i called the company. Was told by the company representative that no cars were available. No advance notice was received about the unavailability of a car. For 35 years I relied on Red Top to get to and from National Airport (DCA). Yes that's how long and I still refuse to call by that president's name. I have now deleted both their phone number and their app because they have gone from 5 stars to no stars in less than one year. Where once live dispatchers greeted me be name, now it's computerized voice that identifies my general location and no one to record my location. I despise Uber and will never use It. I'd rather spend 3x long taking Metro and a bus than pay Red Top for a can. Long story short, needed to get to a pharmacy before it closed, and urgently. Called red top and they said they'd get somebody so my spot within 15 min. I had 30 min to get there and technically could have made it if I jogged, but being a 7 minute drive, I opted for the cab. 15 min comes and goes. I call back -- they tell me the cab already picked somebody up. I was the only person within eye-site of the corner I specified, and the cab never came, person on the phone couldn't care less. I used to use Red Top Cab for airport trips before Uber became big and they were always on time. I wasn't sure if this would still be true since ride-sharing has made such a dent in cab services, but I tried Red Top Cab over Thanksgiving weekend and had an excellent experience. They were less than half the price of Uber and had perfect service. I booked the cab by phone (we had a wheelchair), they texted me confirmation, and because my plane was delayed I had to cancel (by text -- super easy). I re-booked for a later time and the cab was at my house 15 minutes early! So reassuring. I highly, highly recommend Red Top Cab, particularly when Uber seems to be raising fares to insane levels. My quoted price from Uber was $125 and my actual price from Red Top Cab was $54. Our driver was great and I would use them again in a moment. read more

I had an early morning flight at Ronald Reagan airport, so I decided to call a cab instead of uber (just to be on the safe side). I called the night before to make my reservation, and since I'm not familiar with the airport I asked the operator for advice on how early I should get there before my flight. I received a curt reply stating they didn't know, so I added some extra buffer to my pick up time just in case. I also could not hear very well for some reason, and after my third "pardon?" I received an almost yell of " what is your pick up address!" over the phone. I didn't receive an email confirmation of my reservation and was informed that my phone number would suffice. My actual cab ride turned out to be stress-free and convenient. I received a text message about 20 min from pick up letting me know that my ride was on its way. It also included my cab number, which was helpful since multiple cabs were picking up other people outside my hotel. It turned out that 4:30am is a great time to get a glimpse of the monuments, which were illuminated against the dark sky, and to see some of the city with minimal traffic. My driver was prompt, courteous, and dropped me right off at my terminal. They also have a handy credit card swiper that prints out a receipt. read more
