We've used Red Top many times over the years for airport runs, always calling the night before to reserve a morning cab. Lo and behold the new policy: calling in advance does not mean the job will be bid on the night before! Thus, our 8:30am cab showed up at 9am, "after we [Red Top] could find a driver." WTF: why is it hard to line up a driver the night before a morning run? It's easy airport money...as a former driver, I loved those gigs. After calling a handicap accessible cab for my aunt in Arlington (24 hours in advance), a non- handicap accessible cab arrived. Another handicap accessible cab was ordered that after 30 minutes, never arrived. When Red Top Cab wonders why Uber took over the driving business, it is because Red Top Cab couldn't figure out the taxi business. read more

Not usually a fan of theirs but I've gotta admit they totally saved the day for me last week. I had to get to union station to begin my trek to get to BWI. Of course at that exact moment Uber decided to freeze up for 10 minutes before giving me an error message. At that point time was running out and I realized oh yeah that smart phone in my pocket is actually a phone and I called red top. Within 5 minutes they were there and I got to Union Station in plenty of time, driver was hilarious and I'm pretty sure he was trying to get me to invest in his side business he started up. read more

Redtop Cab is not dependable . I call them last night after my driver didn't arrive at the schedule time. They said , a driver hadn't been assign, but they had sent me a link to pay the bill. The driver arrive 35 minutes late. When I arrive at Dulles Airport, and rush through security my plane had close the doors had for the runway. I had to pay an Additional $100.00 to reschedule my flight, and $60.00 to catch a cab home. Plus I have to reschedule appointments because, I'm not at my destination. This is a major inconvenience. Now I have to reschedule my ride to pick me up at my destination which is another $100. 00. They need to refund my fees, and I post updates, and let the public know. read more

I tried Red Top, but they have failed me too many times, and are dead to me now. Most recently I called during regular business hours and they could not give me an estimated time of arrival. Not even a range. 5 min? An hour? Who knows?! They also caused me to almost miss a flight one morning. Their app has also been non functional for the past three weeks. While I would love to support a local business (their dispatch is right in my neighborhood!), I just can't handle the the unreliability. I will rely on Uber and UberX from now on. Only star is for the drivers who are usually friendly and knowledgable about where they are going. All cabs take credit cards easily. read more

I have extreme anger towards this cab company. Just because we're coming home from a big drinking area does not mean that I'm drunk. It also doesn't mean that I don't know what the fares are. I also know how to get myself home and I do know that you're driving in circles to increase the mileage. I guess I should give you some background... We get in the cab on U Street at 3 am. Yes, that is late. No, I was not drunk, I was just hanging out with friends and didn't realize the time and couldn't make it to the metro on time. We get into the cab and he starts us at $5. Um.... Back up. That is not "What the law says" as the cab driver assures us. I read those papers in the back. I know what the fares are. I'm too cheap not to. He asks where I live and I say "In Arlington, between Rosslyn and Court House." What does he choose to do? Well, after driving in circles for a while, my friend claims she's about to puke just so he'll start driving in the right direction. At this point he gets on the freeway and exits all the way in Clarendon even though I'm telling him to exit the entire time. After he gets up there he asks all innocently, "Where to now?" At this point I'm seething. I give him directions to my house and pay him in exact change what he is asking. Which after the trip he adds on another $6 claiming again that it's the law. Lies. No tip for you. Also, I wrote down his driver identification and called the place where you're supposed to call. Maybe he'll realize that I have the ability to read and know the fares as well as how to report a bad cabbie. read more

When I was traveling for a living, Red Top was my go-to taxi service. Always had good, timely service and clean cabs. I no longer travel for a living and only rarely need taxi service in the DC area. The past two times I've used Red Top, this year, I've been screwed over each time. When I order cab service, I generally order *hours* in advance with a scheduled arrival time. In July, the appointed time came and went, It took two calls to the dispatch service to finally get a cab to my front door - 40+ minutes late. This cab had been for a train trip. I'd *planned* to get to the station early so we could get food and do some shopping at Union Station. We ended up getting there just in time to catch our train. Thank god Amtrak security doesn't require the time it takes to get through the TSA nonsense. Tonight, I gave them another opportunity. I'd called about two hours before we were to leave and pre-scheduled a cab. The appointed pickup time arrived and no cab. I called the dispatch number to find out where the hell my cab was and was informed "nothing's been dispatched and there's no cabs in the area". To which I pointed out, "I scheduled this trip two hours ago: how can there have been nothing dispatched and no cabs in the area." She put me on hold to try to escalate the dispatch request. Ten minutes on hold, and no further service. Not wanting to miss our dinner reservations, I opted to drive us into the city. We'd just parked near the convention center (25 minutes after getting on the road and 35 minutes after our cab was originally due) when I get the "your cab has been dispatched" SMS. I wanted to reply "fuck you", but only had the option to send a "cancel" message. Will *NOT* be using Red Top ever again. Hope they burn in hell. read more

Wow, in a word: TERRIBLE! Due to an issue on our part we missed our ride with friends last night. We needed to get to the Gaylord Hotel at the National Harbor for the Commandant's Marine Corps Birthday Ball and we didn't have much time to spare. We live in Crystal City and do not have a car. We've never taken a taxi in the 2 years we lived here so the first cab company I found online was Red Top. We called from our apartment and asked if they could have a cab for us at the Eisenhower Metro in 20 minutes. They told us there would be a cab there at the cab stand. We get to Eisenhower and ask the metro workers where the cab stand is, there is no cab stand. So we call Red Top again and ask for a cab, we tell them we need it quickly or we'll be late to our event. We're told there is a cab stand at every metro station but they said they'd send a cab and it would take 10-20 minutes. Later I realize that there is not a cab stand at every metro, there sure isn't one at Crystal City which is right outside of our apartment. We get a text message with the taxi cab number and we wait. 15 minutes into waiting we see a Red Top Cab drive slowly by the metro station but it missed the turn and then sped off. Immediately we get another text with another taxi number. 30 minutes after calling we've received 6+ taxi numbers and haven't seen another one drive by. We've called several times asking why the change and when a taxi will come and we get no answers. At this point we're sure we're going to be late and unable to enter the event--no entering after the ceremony begins. Finally I google another taxi company and I pray that they have better service. A taxi arrives in about 5 minutes. We are so thankful that he arrived so quickly. In the taxi my husband calls Red Top to complain and basically gets yelled at like we're the bad guys. The new taxi driver missed the exit which resulted in the rate doubling but he only charged us what it would have been without the mixed exit. I thought that was awesome. The bitter part in me wants to add that I was standing outside in a strapless ball gown and no coat in 40 degree weather for over 1/2 an hour. We are going to need another taxi in the near future but I don't know what company might be reliable. It will be very important to have somebody arrive on time. Any suggestions? I'm so thankful we will be getting a car in January. We tried to be environmentally responsible while helping out the local public transportation but I can not depend on an undependable service to get to my destination. read more

It is a bummer I have to give Red Top one star, because I have had a couple good experiences. However, this weekend, I had a pretty bad experience. I called to get a ride home from a barbeque at 9pm. Granted, it was raining, and I'm sure it was a somewhat busy night, but I was told i would get a cab in 10-15 minutes. I received a notifcation that the cab was outside about 10 minutes later, so I ran outside, but there was no cab. I called back, they said they'd send one again, I got another notification maybe 10 minutes later, and again, there was no cab outside. At this point, I called again, and was told that they must have had the address wrong. They said a new cab was on the way. My friend and I must have waited out in the rain for a half hour with no sign of a cab. So I finally called a 4th time, and they put me through to a dispatcher, who said they had no cabs in the area, but that I would be next on their list. So we waited in the rain another 10 minutes. Seriously this is the worst service/company/something-that-I-cannot-name in the universe. For the last 3 weekends in a row they haven't picked me up! This is my routine with them: 10pm: Call a cab 10:45pm: Check with them to see if they will come, and hear the regular answer that they cannot let you know during weekends but they will come once they have a cab 11:15pm: Call again, and hear exactly the same as above 11:45: Call again and tell them it's been almost 2 hours and hear the same as above 12:00 leave home and walk to a place that you can find a cab ...and still do not hear back from them After all these things their drivers still complain about Uber and how it hurts their business. If it were possible to leave ZERO STARS I would. Last Night (11:15pm, Saturday, Jan 14, 2011) I ordered a pickup from 4300 Old Dominion Drive to a destination just inside the city. At 1:10am there was still no cab and a call to Red Top revealed that we were "still in the system." We waited another hour and a half, until 2:45am for a cab to no avail. That puts our total wait time at three hours and thirty minutes before we decided to crash at the place where we were visiting for dinner. It was a nightmare of nearly epic proportions. What was supposed to be a nice dinner turned out to be a monumentally uncomfortable evening. We were still in the system at 8am this morning, but we decided to take the bus rather than wait for a Red Top Cab. Positively unacceptable! This company discriminates against people with disabilities. Red Top Cab is fine for a normal cab ride. They do not take reservations in advance after 8 pm on the weekend, but you can call and request a cab after 8 ... apparently. I requested a wheelchair accessible cab at 10:15 for basically anytime after that. They said they would call when one was in the area. No response. Call back at 11 pm. They again said they would let us know if there is one in the area. Decide to take metro, and see about 10 Red Top cabs go by in the block walk to the metro. If you can't order a cab, then just tell the truth. Apparently picking up drunk people in Arlington is more important than helping people who can't actually walk. read more

My husband & I use RedTop regularly for airport service- from our home in Arlington to DCA, which takes all of 10 mins & $14+tip. Generally, in the early morning, they have been on-time, but as another Yelper noted, that time of day can be HORRID as I found out today. Situation: called at 0420h, the wait time estimate was 10-15mins (we are less than 5 from their hub in Clarendon) and despite 3 MORE calls to the company, no cab was dispatched for 30 mins!!! I requested a free cab ride for all of the trouble and anxiety they caused me and I was transferred to a supervisor named John. He did not seem happy to help me, told me, "No Free Rides," and until I told him I would write an honest review on Yelp only then, did he try and figure out what was going on with the cabs. His excuse was two-fold: the "estimates" were just that, estimates and it was Friday morning. ??? umm ??? estimates should be accurate, especially if they are skewed by 25+ minutes, and if Friday morning at 4:20 am is extremely busy, how about hiring more drivers? Will definitely think twice before using Red Top for any future services, especially with the unhelpful supervisor. read more

The year isn't halfway over yet and I've managed to lock myself out of my car 3 times! Early onset Alzheimer's or just really distracted? Not sure. If you ever find yourself locked out of your car near the Arlington area, consider Red Top Cab! This company not only provide taxi services but they can also unlock your car...for $40!!! I am unsure of the extent of their radius, but they arrived within 15 minutes to Alexandria and got my car unlocked in 5 minutes max. Red Top Cab is fast and cheap compared to the local locksmiths that quoted me $100-$150 with an estimated arrival time that's 4x longer!!! Red Top Cab also offer text message updates and allow you to conveniently check the cab's progress en route--- a feature that I love & something that you don't often get when hiring a locksmith. read more

Experienced a very rude cab driver for Red Top Cab. I live in a condo and the cab driver insisted on parking in a no parking zone obstructing the traffic into and out of my condo building. There was ample parking available in the designated parking lot but he insisted on being rude and disrupting the traffic. My husband recommended that he park the car and pointed to a vacant spot. The cab driver replied that my husband shouldn't be nosy. My husband replied that we live in the building. I told the cab driver that it is not the case of being nosy it is a safety issue. He replied that I needed to grow up. What strange and rude behavior. Thus, I would never use the Red Top Cab company. No aloha! read more

Something has happened to Red Top in the past year. Until about a year ago it was a reliable service. However, THREE times in the past few months I reserved a taxi for a certain time and THREE times it failed to show up. The first was a Friday night reservation Arlington to DC...ok, I thought, busy night, I'll just walk to Metro and forget about it. Second time, for a business meeting in DC at 10am on a Monday. No cab at the appointed time, just the lame text saying 'no taxi dispatched.' So I drove. Third (and final straw for me), I am left standing at the curb with suitcases in hand and the clock ticking on my flight time. Always the same excuse: drivers are independent contractors and if no driver picks up your reservation you are basically screwed. If you actually need a taxi at an appointed hour, DO NOT RELY ON RED TOP CAB. Period. Find some other way to get to your destination. read more

Absolutely unreliable! I decided to use them instead of Yellow Cab as they stood me up before and go figure, Red Top did the same thing. I ordered a cab the day before I needed it to go to the airport - 5:15am pick up. Not only did they not call to say they were backed up but when I called at 5:10 to see if they were on the way they said they get me a cab soon (not even one is on the way) I would have totally missed my flight had I not called Über. read more

My company uses them all the time. I know it was holiday time so I called first thing in the morning for an early evening pick up for the airport. I even called an hour before the pick up to make sure everything was okay. The assured me the driver would be there. I waited 10 minutes past the time they were supposed to pick me up and called again. They told me the driver was on the way. I saw several people walk out of my office building and hail cabs with little effort. I stood outside for 35 minutes before the driver showed up. The only reason I waited was because it was going on my company's account. The driver then told me that he came as soon as he heard about me, which was 10 minutes prior to him showing up. He told me that the company didn't inform anyone about me. He agreed callers with scheduled pick ups should take priority. His sympathy didn't do much for me considering I almost missed my flight. In the Land of the Blind, the One Eyed Man is King. How many Arlingtonians know that Yellow Top and Red Top are the same cab company? Want to know how I found out? After waiting over an hour for a Red Top (which was said to arrive in 10-20 minutes), we called Yellow Top to hedge our bets. Unbeknownst to us, when we placed that order, Red Top cancelled our first order.... BECAUSE they are the same company. After an hour and a half waiting for Red Top, we called back and asked where the cab was and that was when we were informed that our order had been cancelled for the original cab. You fool me once, shame on you. A weekend later, I hosted a wine tasting at my house and urged my inebriated guests to call for a cab.... at 1:30 AM on a Saturday in May. At 3 AM, the cab had still not shown. I called Red Top and was told I was on the list. At 3:30, I drove my guests home myself. You fool twice, shame on me. Except, this is more like you've fooled me about 12 times in the last 5 years and it's not like I take a taxi every weekend. Hey, entrepeneurs of Arlington, here's your opportunity!!! Pray and drive. I once had a cab driver place his prayer book on the steering wheel while he recited his prayers. We weren't going very fast, but I wasn't alarmed because I was too fascinated. Also, since he has to pray five times a day, I figured that he must have figured it out. Of course, if we were to have met our maker that day, we'd probably have been going to different ones... Another time, I had a fascinating talk with an Ethiopian cab driver who told me that he had gone to Korea once to see his father's grave. He told me that the Ethiopians had sent troops to Korea in the 50s during the early part of the Korean War (still officially not over). His story was touching as he told me about a time and place long before I was born, but still directly impacting my life (who can account for how the universe weaves her web). Red Top has since become my choice when choosing a cab whose destination begins in Virginia as they have proven to be the most reliable. What I like most about Red Top Cab is the ability to place timed calls online thus ensuring your pick up time is correct. To help make sure you're ready by the time the cab arrives, Red Top will send you an alert text message to let you know your cab has been dispatched. These online timed pick ups have proved useful, especially on a busy Friday or Saturday night where a phoned in pick up would normally give you a 15-45 minute window of arrival. With any cab company, you're at the mercy of their drivers. More often then not, the Red Top guys have been good. If they don't, I simply take down their cab number and file a compliant. It's really that simple to ensure you have a pleasant ride. If you need to get some place and need a reliable choice, I would definitely suggest using this company. If you have a blackberry, you can sign up for ride charge which will allow you to pay by credit card. read more

Awful service and very often the operator has a personality of a toilet. Last night was the final straw. At 12am West Falls Church Metro: 'Yes, cab will be there in 10-15 minutes'. 15 mins later: no cab. I call and operator says he will be there in a minute. 5 minutes later no cab and I call back. Operator says 'Oh, the driver picked up somebody else'. What the ???? How does that happen? I thought it might be a Seinfeld episode. 'Hey, I reserved a cab for some other stranger'. Terrible experience today w/ Red Top Cab. I never understood why this company got bad reviews until now. I encountered an incredibly rude driver who told me that if I needed someone faster I should call someone else. And a dispatcher who told me she couldn't find my online reservation, after I had spoken to her 10 minutes before. I ended up canceling my reservation and called UBER - a really nice driver arrived within 5 minutes. If you're interested in reading more here's a short play-by-play: I made an on-line reservation for pick up outside BJ's Wholesale in Falls Church. 10 minutes later, I got a text message that my cab had arrived. However, there was no cab. I was given the option to call the driver. I did call, thinking that the driver was actually there, but I that somehow wasn't seeing him/her. There was no answer, I left a VM. LOL! I was leaving a message for the cab driver supposedly at my destination! I then immediately called dispatch. The lady told me my cab was delayed and would be to me in 5 minutes. After 5 minutes, I got a call from the driver - who rudely asked me why I called. He told me he'd pick me up in 5 minutes because he was busy. When I expressed some dismay, he told me that I could call someone else if I was in a hurry. LOL! I called dispatch again to request another driver. The same lady who had helped me 10 minutes before, said she couldn't find my reservation. I cut my losses and called UBER. read more

I've used Red Top three times so far and I've always had great experience. Up until today. The cab was a no-show TWICE this morning, I had a reservation for 5am. No cab was dispatched. I called Red Top, and they finally dispatched a cab and it was en route. While the cab was on the way, my booking was canceled because someone called the wrong number. Why would someone need to call me again to verify I was still waiting when the dispatcher knew I was waiting outside? Since I booked using the iPhone application, shouldn't they try to verify the booking through the application, which would probably have been easier. The cab did not show up until 5:45am. My flight was at 6:10am. I missed my flight because of the tardiness of Red Top and I had to take the 7:30pm flight instead and I was late to my meeting. Thanks Red Top for failing to show up twice. It shouldn't take three attempts to get a cab dispatched. If a cab cannot be dispatched, at least communicate saying that no cabs are available at this time. If better communication was present, I wouldn't have given a low review. read more

Ordered another taxi. I recieved a call that taxi arrived. There was no taxi in sight. Called dispatch again see if they could not locate the taxi and they dispatched another one. Reserved a cab for the morning to get to the airport. About on time, got texts saying the cab was arriving and then that it was here, but no cab. Dispatch then said the cab had "problems" and they were dispatching another - we were put on "high priority" but they couldn't tell us when we would get a cab. After about a half hour or so, we went to get a cab from the street, and of course then the dispatched cab showed up and tried to argue with us about the pickup. Not the first time something similar has happened. If the cab shows up, or you hail one on the street, they're nice enough and decent I think at navigating the city traffic, but horribly unreliable for reservations. read more

BE VERY WARY of using this cab company!!!!! I took a cab from Don Titos to El Pollo Rico on May 12, 2015 and it is only 0.74 miles away and should've been $5-6. I gave $1 tip on my card and I just checked my CC and the driver changed it to $10! Driving Distance: 0.74 miles Rate estimate: $5 to $6 I didn't keep the receipt so I can't contest it but wanted to WARN others that they are scammers and either keep your receipt or pay in cash. This review is not based on one experience but on numerous experiences. Only because you have courteous phone operators doesn't mean your company is good. The actual product is what matters. Although I've had numerous horrible experiences (e.g. calling for a cab in the snowstorm and them letting other people get in who DIDN'T"T call and specifically request the cab, not showing up, etc) this review arose from the past two days. Yesterday I ordered a cab and it arrived 15 minutes late. I mean in the cab world this is a no no. As a loyal customer I let 5 empty cabs go by thinking that maybe the taxi karma will pay me back. Boy was I wrong. Today I ordered a cab and it arrived 5 minutes early. You'd think "great"! right? WRONG. When I got downstairs at the requested pickup time the cab was gone. And was never to be seen again. When I called the operators I was told the cab had waited a long time and left. I didn't realize 5 minutes was a long time, especially when I got there at the requested time. Then when I tried to clarify with the operator what had happened I was THEN told that the cab never came. When I tried ordering another one they told me one was on it's way...never came so as far as I'm concerned I will never be ordering or taking Red Top Cab again. read more

Their driver didn't show up at 4:30 AM to take me to Dulles in 2004, and I nearly missed my flight because of that. The dispatcher was typically surly and unhelpful about it when I called several times to inquire on the driver's whereabouts. So I got in my car and drove to the airport. I tried them again recently--slightly better experience. But they still have a lot to make up for. read more

In the age of Uber, I have not been in the habit of pre-scheduling cabs. However I had an early morning appointment I could not be late to. I scheduled a taxi on the Red Top website and got a confirmation number. I received text messages the next morning to tell me when my taxi was dispatched, arriving and when it arrived. My taxi came on time, knew where my destination was and had it plugged in to his navigation system. The cab was clean and the driver was polite. I got to my appointment early enough to write this review. I will download the Red Top app and will use it when I need a taxi at a specific time and don't want to take my chances with a ride sharing company not being available when I need them. read more

Time after time I've booked an appointment with Red Top a day in advance, only for them to either not show up at all or to show up very late. Calling to complain does no good, and will only get you excuse after excuse. Buy a bike. Rent a donkey. Invest in good walking shoes. Do ANYTHING but rely on Red Top Cab. read more

Made a reservation early AM to catch a flight. They never showed up! Reservation agent was kind and accommodating. Promised me a minivan would be there on time. They never showed up! I called. The guy said he's sorry but there are no available cabs. He would look for a car and send one when available. I asked how long. He told me he could not provide an estimate! Not my favorite cab company. Drivers are on time - but almost to a fault. Not always clean, definitely not new, the cabs are well worn and show their age. Since they're metered, you don't have to worry about getting into an argument about the fare unless you're silly enough to let them drive without it. By the way, if they're early, they will sit, sometimes call you, but otherwise let someone else jump your cab. I've had it happen too often to give them anything higher than three stars. read more

Doesn't get any better than to call this Arlington cab company - when you live in DC! I can only speak for advance calls, cause that's how I got the referral to Red Top. Everytime I call or book online the night before, they call and arrive at least 5 minutes early. Their cars and drivers are professional and clean (DC cabs can't usually say this about either!) They even participate in a nationwide service called RideCharge, where you can charge the cab ride at your destination through your cell phone! And they love it, because the driver doesn't have to deal with cash or credit card. I love Red Top! read more
