Update: The "Oktoberfest" event that supposedly crashed the computer had ended 4 HOURS before we were sat... Something is going on at this restaurant. (That was fine!) during us saying "no problem!" the manager swooped in with a different excuse -- the computer had broken and she couldn't take transactions. We and many others offered to pay in cash... Then she said that the point of sale system's Customer Service was only open M-F 9-5 and it didn't matter, they couldn't take orders. They were closed. ... I'm suspicious of both stories. They can't write down orders and take cash? Ridiculous. Their bar stayed open. My theory is that the manager is brand new (I'd never seen her before) and something else was going on. When I'd called 20 mins before arriving she needed quite a bit of time to answer when the kitchen was closing. All this to day... the food is good... we go there regularly and cater from them, but this was amazingly terrible customer service. Redbones is a classic Somerville spot. Of course the Boston area isn't know for its BBQ, but Redbones will prove the stereotypes wrong! The ambiance is VERY casual, and almost too divey in my opinion. It's definitely got a family feel (loud and energetic) with some eclectic decorations and checkered tablecloths, but I think it could use a facelift. Great beer menu to go with your BBQ!! We got the smoked beef brisket sandwich and it was AMAZING!! The meat was so tender and it came with two sides- I recommend both the mac & cheese and the onion rings! They didn't have that many sauces to pick from which really didn't appeal to me as I feel like the BBQ sauce options make all the difference (especially when compared to Sheds BBQ in downtown boston). I couldn't even contemplate the price of ribs today. At 9.30 pm on a Friday night, no one was at the front post, so I walked in after five minutes of waiting - and eventually someone brought me a menu at the chef station. I'm originally from North Carolina and I miss Southern food so much. My partner went here with friends a while back and took me to dinner last Tuesday for the hot chicken special (all you can eat hot chicken with 2 sides for $15!) and wow! I had set my mind on fried chicken but the hot chicken upped the ante and made my night. The collard greens and mac & cheese did not disappoint either. I really wanted to love this place. I'd heard good things, and I was craving a taste of home. The interior looked so promising - just like a traditional no-frills barbecue joint. And the barbecue itself was fine, although it needed a fair amount of sauce, and if your barbecue soaks up sauce you might be doing something wrong. But the sides were beyond disappointing! The biscuits were so hard I couldn't crack them in half to put butter on, the collards were peppery, and the mac and cheese looked (and tasted) like Kraft. How do you mess up biscuits? We were going to try the beignets, but after how bad the biscuits were, we decided to cut our losses. Randomly had a craving for ribs on the coldest Friday night ever and realized that even though I've been living in Davis for like 2 years, I still haven't tried this place. I'm not really a fan of super saucy ribs so I ordered the dry rub St. Louis style ribs and that I throughly enjoyed. With it I got a side of collard greens which was A+ and also a cornbread side which was just okay. I think it was a little dry. Overall I enjoyed my last minute rib decision and the pick up process was pretty easy. I liked that the packaging had minimal plastic waste as well. I only took away one star because I find the prices to be sort of high for the portions you get (I was a little hungry still after eating). So this definitely wasn't the food I was expecting. I had been craving fried chicken and Mac n cheese all day and really wanted something more authentic than Popeyes, closer to what I'm used to getting when I'm back home. The Mac n cheese was not the southern Mac n cheese that I am used to. It wasn't nasty but it is very similar, in my opinion, to the Mac n cheese served at Popeyes and I was hoping for something that tasted less processed. It definitely didn't taste or look like real cheese and had a very creamy velveeta texture. The fried chicken was made with chicken cutlets and I was expecting bone-in pieces so that was a bummer. The flavor on the chicken was good but the chicken itself was very dry and the breading didn't stay on the chicken. For dessert, I ordered the banana pudding and again was very disappointed. Banana pudding is one of my favorite desserts and this just did not taste good to me. I was even more disappointed because I was actually deciding between ordering from here and another bbq place but I chose this place because they offered banana pudding. I was in Somerville the other day for a appointment . Two of my favorite places to eat is JP Licks and Redbones. I ordered a beef rib dinner with cole slaw and backed beans. When I asked the price of the dinner imagine my shock when the employee said 27.00!! I thought I heard him wrong so I asked again...27.00. I called the restaurant and they did not apologize, did not seem bothered by it at all, and blamed the delivery guy for eating the food, that it's a common occurrence for them with Ubereats. Where do I start?!!! This place was an institution. I think the first time I went there was over 20 years ago. Always solid. Since 2020 they have been take out only and they just "re-opened" last month. We sat at the bar. There is nothing on the walls. They did not hook the cable to back up, just dead monitors. The liquor shelf had just two bottles, a bottle of makers and a tequila on it. Of the 12 taps only four have beer. But hey, they are just starting back up, and the beer prices were reasonable so point for them there. The bartender came over and stared at us. Did not say hello. We ordered beers. He said nothing and went and got them. After a few mins we said we'd like to order food. He stared at us and said nothing. We started to order. My friend said what he wanted. The bartender walked away and punched in just that order. He came back and my second friend ordered and he walked off to punch it in. Then I ordered. Same drill. He brought the fried pickle appetizer. In a takeout container. We asked for plates and he spoke! "We don't have plates." Dinner came...In cardboard take out containers. I asked for salt and pepper. He pointed to the packets with the plasticware. The portions and food were quite good and they have reduced their prices. The hot chicken and mashed potatoes was stellar as were the bbq platters. Maybe I just came on a good night, but the buffalo shrimp was as good as I remembered it. I had burnt ends, which were great. Appropriately seasoned and charred, nice and fatty. The collard greens and corn bread rounded out the meal nicely. Be forewarned that the corn bread is the sweet kind that exists most places outside the South. The beer selection was a shadow of its former self, when Redbones used to truck in kegs from the Pacific Northwest. But the offerings were top notch, with a nice emphasis on local. I'm from Georgia, where good barbecue runs wild. And boy did I take it for granted until I came up North and realized how lucky I'd been. I live close to Davis, so I was relieved to find Redbones and get a Southern fix. When I informed my coworkers that I was going to try it out for dinner one day, they raved about the food and ensured me that I'd love it. They obviously haven't been to the South. I even question if the cooks at Redbones have crossed the Mason-Dixon line. I ordered a pulled pork sandwich plate which includes baked beans and potato salad. A classic. It's not possible to mess that up, right? Wrong. The cornbread they brought out was too dry, crumbly, and pretty flavorless. Likewise, the pork was dry and not nearly as tender or well-marinated as the Southern BBQ Gods declare it should be. And the price! Who's ever heard of paying that much for a poorly executed pulled pork sandwich? It's a travesty, really. The only semi-authentic thing that I could find about the restaurant was the atmosphere: somewhat chaotic, loud, with tables packed close together so you're nearly elbow-to-elbow with your neighbor. In other words, you get all the cons of a barbecue joint without the pros of good food and cheap prices. Although I live just a few blocks from Redbones, I haven't returned. And I won't. I always wondered about this place since it's suppose to have great BBQ ribs. Time after time, I had put this venture off. Curiosity killed the cat finally. Very casual atmosphere with a stack of home use square paper dinner napkins on each table. To make a note - they are not necessarily clean. Not exactly the most comfortable offerings even when it's one person sitting at a four top - a bit cramped/tight to be exact. I can only imagine if I had 3 friends with me! I was greeted with a petite square piece of bread and a patty of butter - I think cornbread, I couldn't quite figure it out. The server then asked me what I would like to drink. She kinda looked at me weird when I asked if she has Coke. Anyways, I got my cola in a large mason jar. Large enough that I didn't have to ask for a refill! The server was quite helpful when I asked her about the menu. Guided me thru some choices when I told her I wanted to try a little bit of everything. She did note that the portion of these dishes are ginormous. Fudge! This is when I actually wanted to bring a pig with me so I don't waste food. I ended up ordering a small St. Louis Rib which came with beans and coleslaw. It came with 5 ribs and 2 sauces on the side. Down to the point, I have no idea why there is so much rave about Redbones. Maybe I'm just anal, I actually like my ribs tender, juicy and fall off the bone. It didn't hit any of that. If I didn't drench the meat in the sauce, it was wicked dry. Nothing savory about these ribs. As for the sides, beans. I'm from Boston so when she said beans, I automatically thought, Boston Baked Beans. To my dismay, it was no where close. Honestly, I couldn't figure out what they were trying to do with the beans. It just tasted like blanched beans. For the coleslaw, it was too sour for my taste. Is there a sour version of coleslaw? Even though this place is as loud as a KMFDM Concert in the mid-80s, only with instruments and metal vocals replaced by drunk students ranting about missing jackets and shouting hostesses ringing their vocal bells announcing that "TABLE FOR CHRIS, 9, READY" three times before Chris and Co. finally worm their way through the bar and to their seats, the food is pretty damn amazing. The ribs are the definition of "fall-off-the-bone." They're so succulent and melt so willingly that even the most keen carnivore would be confused as to where meat product ends and cartilage ends...and it doesn't even matter, because the flavor is so smokey, so southern, so delightfully fattening. The coleslaw is crunchy and delightful - the perfect balance between vinegar and cream is achieved, making this coleslaw reminiscent of Aunt Caroline's homemade country 'slaw. The 4 BBQ sauces set before you only add to the authenticity - you're given the gamut from the thick and sweet (think KC) to the thin and vinegary (think Yankee). Pour all four of them all over everything you eat, and you'll be ridiculously happy. read more

Went in today for brisket, a sausage, 4 ribs, a side of Mac, and a side of BBQ beans for like 25 bills so I expected something decent. Instead, I got a pitiful and quite frankly disrespectful forgery of southern BBQ. You would have to pay for my meal and my time to make me come back to this sorry establishment. Ordered for the first time. I would have given 5 stars but I ordered the fried chicken breast. It was delicious but was very small. Would have liked a real breast size piece. Overall the food was good. I had a side of coleslaw which was a little bland, but edible. I am use to a sweeter version. The corn bread was very good. The beans were to die for. They had pieces of brisket in them. My daughter had brisket hash and said it was delicious. She said the mashed potatoes were real! And were very good. The pecan pie was good as well. " on our last visit, we called 4 times during the day to check on their Ribs supply, they ensured us they had plenty of Ribs... of course we get there ... and they say they have enough for one order only. it is really disappointing, each time they say "oh we are SO sorry with a condescending tone " but come on!!!! so here we are spending $50+ per person on food and drinks, only to be served foods we didn't want. Good BBQ. I was surprised at how popular Redbones has become. It was early in the evening, but I had to wait for nearly 45 minutes for a table. More families and large groups seem to dine here compared to other Boston Area and Somerville eateries. I shared a ribs and pulled pork combo plus an extra order of brisket. The pulled pork was tasty, the ribs were not bad, but not quite perfect. The brisket was not bad, but I have yet to find great brisket outside of Texas. The collard greens and mac and cheese were both good sides. All of this was an Ok amount to share between two not super hungry people. If you are very hungry, you might have to go solo on a combo. They have a pretty extensive liquor selection. The glass of neat bourbon I had took the meal to the next level. Overall, I had a fun and satisfying experience. I've been here a few times and am glad to have a decent BBQ joint in the neighborhood. I think every single time I've gone there, I've gotten the 2 meat + 2 sides combo. At first I was a little leery about BBQ in New England. Clam chowdah and seafood--yes. But pulled pork and brisket--ehh maybe? Located in Davis square, this place is off the main drag. They put sauces on the table, but I wanted to try it without any sauce. First bite was amazing! Extremely tender and moist. The outside was charred to perfectly and I could take the smoke. I was quite impressed! I added some BBQ sauce which complimented the beef very nicely. My friend ordered the St. Louis style ribs. I tried one and it was a bit dry, but nonetheless very very tasty. So after an uneventful trip to Rosebud... There were many awesome dishes to choose from but I ultimately decided on the chicken and waffles dish. Really crunch chicken and fluffy waffles were one of the best I've had since I left the west coast. Others at my table had the shrimp and grits, the cheeseburger, and a fabulous jar of the sweet tea! There was silence so I assumed people enjoyed their meal! But what really made the experience worthwhile was being able to have great service despite the late hour. After a bad experience down the street, we were happy to find a place that welcomed us and made us feel like family! A return visit is definitely likely to happen soon! read more

My birthday was yesterday and Breanna our waitress was amazing! She had worked almost all of the tables downstairs and was keeping a positive attitude all night. And when she had "down time" she was organizing, sweeping, or making sure customers were happy. Meanwhile, this other waitress Zoleya or Zorana or something was on her phone for 2-3 minutes a few times during my visit and didn't even notice when people had been seated. Not only has she been on her phone but I've also seen her doing nothing and/or dancing. If she was to stay on staff she should be supervised or go through training. read more

I've been eating at Redbones since 1993 and while the quality over the years has definitely fluctuated, this brisket was worse than abysmal. When I placed my order I specified fatty brisket. This is what my order looked like when it arrived. I also weighed it and it was less than 7 ounces for 26.99. I called to see if something could be done to make up for this travesty, and I explained that I ordered through Uber Eats, and that they refunded the cost of the food, but not any of the delivery fees. I offered to make the same order again, and asked if they could replace it with fatty brisket and throw in a little extra to make up for last night and the owner declined. I've been in the restaurant business for 35 years and this absolutely hit a nadir in terms of both quality and hospitality. read more
