This place was amazing. It looks like a shack from the outside and I was a little nervous to go in, but I'm glad I did. All I can say is this place, while frequented by tourists (it's true), is so very authentic. The music was as amazing as the place was seedy. You enter and are washed in a bath of red light and it's a small place so everyone turns to look at you when you come through the door. Don't be shy! Find a seat, it's worth the price of admission. Red's is the most authentic experience anyone can have when it comes to live Delta Blues. We sat at Red's Bar and had front row seats for the band, which was fantastic. As the night went on, the crowds grew, and we were glad we had arrived early, and held our seats as prized possessions. The only drawback is the cigarette smoke, but I figure its part of the experience, and I can't rate it any lower than 5 stars smokey as it was. Finally, you must mind your manners, even if you're in the band. Red doesn't exactly say it this way, but his policy is "be nice or leave". read more

FYI, the cover has gone up to $10. I'm guessing that may be keeping some of the locals away because it was probably 90% tourists when I was there recently. A woman with a fur coat and fancy purse sat next to me before I finally left. Who wants to go to a juke joint and sit next to a rich lady in a fur coat?! I had never heard of the guy playing but he was really good, although not a lot of blues being played. Have to say though that I did enjoy the covers he played which included a rendition of Folsom Prison Blues. I'd recommend to those who have never been but having gone several years ago and had much better experiences I don't know if I'd bother to go back next time I was in town. read more

Went on a music road trip from Louisville down to New Orleans. I was most excited about my stop in Clarksdale to see some delta blues, and Red's was my targeted stop. My group spent a Friday and Saturday night a Reds. Here are some highlights: Hanging out with Red: He is a maniac extraordinaire. I did not know what he was saying half the time, but appreciated the reception, education and moonshine. We felt like locals after a mason jar. Friday: saw a old timer belt out his mournful soul for 3 hours with only a 10 minute whiskey break. Us Yankees from our group were privileged with a rare and exceptional experience. Sat: A benefit night for a local musician. There was a cavalcade of musicians, cake, and moonshine like I never have seen. The bands were laying down some funk that would make even the most shy guy dance a boogie. We also went to Ground Zero before (needed dinner and unlike other posters here, there was no BBQ at Reds), but when were entering Reds he scolded me about my wanderings to that "hollywood bullsh*t" I apologized profusely and ate my GZ entry band and then had the time of my life at Reds. read more

I've been here three times, and each time has been different. The first time, the crowd was mostly locals, the music was too loud, and the band could barely corral their heavy-drinking frontman. It was awesome - maybe the most fun I've ever had in Clarksdale - but it wouldn't be everybody's scene. The second time, it was mostly tourists and everything was much tamer. The third time, it was the DJ's birthday party. The place was packed to the gills with locals and tourists alike, food and liquor was free and plentiful, the music was some great trance-y Hill Country kind of stuff - sort of a mix of my previous two experiences. So, Red's varies from night to night, and it may or may not be your thing depending. Regardless, if you come in here looking for a good time, you'll always find it. The beer is cold and cheap, the music is good and loud, and if you can't find a seat, just start digging around one of the piles of flotsam laying about and you're sure to find a ratty stool or a milk crate. There is a cover here - usually $5, sometimes more on special events (the DJ's birthday was $7, but they had food and liquor). My favorite T-shirt also came from Red's. It has a scripted baseball-style logo and says "Backed by the River, Fronted by the Grave" - an allusion to the nearby river and cemetery. Major points for that. read more

Was there on a Friday night, $5 cover for T Model Ford to play. He is a 91 year old local guy! Good music, ok beer prices. Not crowded at all when we were there even though this was a highly touted guy to see. Have never seen so much stuff piled into a small bar,,,did not get that! Real juke joint! read more

By far my favorite stop in Clarksdale. Red is the man. The blues played in the juke joint are authentic and incredible. My only regret was not being around during the day to sample some of the yummy smelling smoked treats on Red's smoker. You must stop here if you visit Clarksdale. read more

Don't let the exterior fool you - step inside for a great blues experience! We drove from Memphis one night planning to catch a set at Red's and leave during a break between sets to go to the more known Ground Zero. Got to Red's around 9pm while Terry "Harmonica" Bean was playing who never took a break and we didn't leave until 1:39 am, The place is far from fancy, the bathroom needs some work, but we had the best time and can't wait to go back. read more

I went on a bles pilgrimmage last summer. Stopped outside Reds, my cell wasnt working , there he was loading his car! I asked where a pay phone was, he handed me his phone, I said it is to Michigan, " so what" and he walked back inside, me with the phone. A very cool man. Went to the show the next night.
