Reeds Gold Mine was a lot of fun. The tour guides were helpful and knowledgeable. The kids enjoyed gold panning, and two of the three kids found gold. The mine was a nice 55 degrees. The parking lot and road in are in bad shape...really need repair and repaving

A fun place for the whole family. It's about 45 mins drive from Charlotte Airport. The drive was still smooth during morning rush hours. They offer a free 9 mins presentation onsite that talks about the history of NC gold mining. There is an onsite exhibition showcasing many tools and equipment used by the miners. There is a self guided underground tour of the actual miner, pretty interesting. The highlight for my kiddos was the panning. It's $3 per person and runs on a schedule. My daughter found two piece of gold from her pan. It looks like about 1 in 10 pans would find gold. You really have to patiently wash off all the dirt and filter out the rocks to get to the bottom to find the gold. Pretty unique experience. They will put your gold in a small bottle for you to take home.

I'm so glad I visited and took the tour! This place is so well run and organized! It's a short 40 minute drive from Charlotte. There is a 9 minute film you can watch in the visitor center if you choose. The tour is self guided and FREE! If you want to pan for gold it's $3/pan. The underground portion of the tour is pretty short. It's cool and damp but in the summer you don't need a jacket. A lot of the tour is walking outside on a gravel path so wear comfortable walking shoes. Panning for gold was a cool experience but took longer than I thought it would. There are people there who tell/show you how to do it. You stand at a trough of water so only your hands get wet. I found a fleck of gold in my pan and they put it in a test tube for me to take as a souvenir! There are lots of picnic tables if you want to pack a lunch (but there are no food vendors there). I would also suggest sunscreen and maybe bug spray. Also a flashlight or the light on your phone to help see in the underground mine.

Spent the morning with a class trip to Reed Gold Mine and the kids had a blast and learned a lot about North Carolina gold history during the 1800s. The day begins with the most exciting part: panning for gold! Out of 61 people today, 4 found gold in their pans - lots of excitement! Next up was an informative tour of the underground mine which is well lit and safe, however, some parts might be difficult if you are uncomfortable with enclosed spaces or claustrophobic (or exceptionally tall). Next, you can watch a short video inside the museum about the history of Reed's mine. Lastly, finish up with a trip through the extensive museum and teeny gift shop. Restrooms on site are good and over all, this was a wonderful field trip experience! I was especially impressed by the museum - so much to see including old mining equipment and artifacts.

Great for educational and rainy day fun with the kids. Spend the dollar or two for a guided tour. Worth it. Gold panning starts back April 1st.

Great experience, free self tour of the mine shafts and a small fee to pan for gold. We found a few flakes of gold.

Tuesday afternoon and MLB just found out that NC was doing gold before anyone else in the USA. not that no one did gold ever, just not in a big way and not after that ruckus in the late 18th century... Currently a North Carolina Historic Site and National Landmark since 1966 the property is attended by The State and everything on the site is property of The State, thus removal of any items is considered theft and constitutes a persecutable offense. First off, this place is kind of out of the way even for locals but when you get here it's kind of a fun thing. The visitor center is nicely equipped with many period artifacts and a great many displays and dioramas and some video to enhance the whole learning thing... Tours of the actual mine are free for either DIY or guided, went with a guide because it seemed the right thing to do, next spring when we have guests from out of town we may go for a selfie. Lotsa tidbits of information on tour including fun geology facts and mining terms. You get a good perspective on the nature of primitive mining since many of the tunnels are preserved 'as was' Deepest part of the accessible mine is 50-feet below the surface, but you son't really notice the decent until it's time to walk up the stairs to get out ;-) There's stuff do and things to see and places to go outside the mine but it was late when we got there and closing time when we got topside so we'll see about seeing when we get out again.

What a treasure! This is a total free tour and it's so worth the visit. They have a very nice exhibit for you to explore indoors bEfore or after the tour. You are also free to explore on your own once the tour guide is finished.

These ominous clouds will produce heavy rains, which will unearth large gold nuggets for me to find.

We visited the Hendrick campus this past summer, on a Thursday afternoon in July. It was not super busy, but there were a few other groups in the museum and store while we were there. The campus is located in Concord, and there is plenty of private parking just steps away from the front doors of the museum and gift shop. It was easy to figure out we were in the right spot with the ample signage around the property. The museum and gift shop are essentially one and the same - you walk into the lobby of the building, and the museum is mostly around the perimeter of the space, while the gift shop area is in the center. The team garages are located in another building on the property. We had positive interactions with all of the staff, and especially with the woman who works reception at in the building with the team garages (her name escapes me, but she was so wonderful!). The review is further broken down into categories below: Displays/Museums/Historical Items - 4/5 Rating The downright history, and all of the cars to see at Hendrick is unmatched. There is a lot to take in regarding the history and variety. Also, the amount of cars to see is impressive. All or the cars are behind ropes, so you cannot touch them or get very close. As stated above, the museum is located in one large space, so the cars are just what can fit along the perimeter of the room. There are also large displays discussing the history of Hendrick, along with various trophies. Team Store - 5/5 Rating Hendrick has the largest selection of merchandise for any of the racing teams, by far. There is plenty of selection for each current cup series driver, along with a diverse selection for past drivers. There was a clearance rack of items, and they were also running a promotion of a free item if you spent so much in the shop. You got to pick the item from a select area in the shop. The die cast selection left something to be desired. However, there are plenty of knickknack-type items to choose from. Garage Access - 2/5 Rating In terms of garage access, there is not a ton for this team. As stated above, the garage is located in a separate building on the property from the museum and gift shop. But, this access of this area is limited. The viewing area is only one smaller window. They were working on an Xfinity car at the time we were there, and you were asked not to take pictures of the garage area. Overall Access - 5/5 Rating The access here is rather vast when comparing to other teams. You are able to drive around the entire campus, and see a lot while doing so due to the size. Additionally, there is access for fans to the pit practice area. This is a unique aspect of Hendrick that we did not see from other teams. There is also access to the team lobby, specifically the 5 and the 9 who share a building. This is where the garage viewing area is located. It also had multiple trophies on display, historical items and past cars. Extras - 5/5 Rating Being able to see live pit practice for the team is rather insane. This is not happening at all hours the shop and museum are open, but when the crew is conducting practice, fans are invited to view the sessions. We witnessed this on a previous trip to Hendrick, and watched the practice for an extended period. The pit practices are held in the designated area behind the museum and gift shop. There were even bleachers for fans to sit on for the practice. The Hero Cards are also located in the lobby/entrance of the museum, and the selection was good! In the 5 and 9 team buildings is where the public access to the garages are located. There are a few more race cars to see in there, but the highlight of this part of Hendrick is the receptionist for the building. She was so friendly, and let us hold the sword trophy from Jimmie Johnson's last Bristol win. It is right on the desk, so you will not miss it. This was a major highlight for my fiancé! If you can only make one racing team stop while in the area, Hendrick is the place to stop. There is a lot to look at in the museum, as well as one of the most diverse gift shops of all the teams. It is nice to be able to get merchandise from current drivers, as well as retired Hendrick legends. The extras here are top-notch. If you are able to visit during the pit practice, that would make the whole trip worth it. This absolutely is a must-stop for any racing fan while in the area.

Since then, they moved across the street to another commercial building. The space appears to be smaller and there are less cars on display. However, it is still really nice and worth a stop if you're in the area. Saturday was Bullitt Day at the museum. Ford produced special edition Bullitt Mustangs in '01, '08, '09 (briefly), '18 & '19, which came in a dark highland green or black color with some special appearance package items as well as a boost to the horsepower. I own an '08 and my wife and I drove down for the day. We had a nice time. The staff is great and we got a brief tour. They had some really nice cars on display that have interesting histories. We visited RFK this past summer, on a Thursday afternoon in July. It was not busy, but there were a few other groups in the museum and store while we were there. The building is located in a quiet area in Concord, and there is plenty of private parking just steps away from the front doors. It was easy to figure out we were in the right spot with the water feature and signage outside. The museum and gift shop are essentially one and the same - you walk through the lobby area of the museum to go into the gift shop. The shop is a normal, one-room sized area. The museum is sizable, having several rooms full of items to look at. The woman staffing the museum and gift shop when we visited was very friendly, conversational, and helpful with answering our questions. The review is further broken down into categories below: Displays/Museums/Historical Items - 5/5 Rating The museum and displays at RFK are all very good. A lot of it was interactive, especially compared to other racing team's museums. They allow you to get up close to cars here - they are not behind ropes or glass. In addition to the displays about current and past drivers, there was some history with the different aerodynamics of the cars that RFK implemented and different engines. The overall mix of displays - historical, current, stock car, mechanical aspects - was great and interesting with the diversity. There is a good amount of items, and depending on how long you wish to browse, you could spend an hour plus looking at all of the displays. Team Store - 3/5 Rating The gift shop here had a lot of options for Brad Keslowski, but not a ton for their other two drivers. In terms of sale items, there were not many. Most of the items were full price. The selection of die casts was good - there was a full peg board display for these. For the hats, they were mostly sponsor-specific instead of driver specific. There was not a lot of variety in color for the hats, either. Garage Access - 0/5 Rating Unfortunately, there is no garage access for this team. The museum and gift shop are not connected to the garage, like they are for many other teams. I do not believe there is any public access to their garages, but I would presume they are on this property. Overall Access - 2/5 Rating The access here is limited to the museum and the team store. As stated, there is no garage access for this team. However, there is enough to see and interact with in the museum portion that makes this a positive experience for the fans. This score could be higher if there was some garage access added for this team in the future. Extras - 5/5 Rating One of the nice "extras" here is the Racing Simulator that is located at the front of the museum. It is free to use for anyone visiting. We did not see one of these at any of the other racing team's locations, so this was cool to use and partake in. It would be great for kids going to visit here as well. They have the Fastenal Theater, which according to the signage and things I read online, showed a season highlight film that anyone visiting can watch free of charge. Again, this is a unique aspect of RFK that we did not see other places. Unfortunately, it was not running the show during our visit, and it seemed to be used for storage instead. The Hero Cards are also located in the lobby/entrance, and the selection was good! Overall, we enjoyed our visit to RFK. The fan experience at this shop, for what is there, is wonderful. There is something for young and old, and enough where you can spend a good amount of time looking at everything. The museum is free of charge, and all of the "extras" that make this place unique from other teams are also free. The gift shop could use some additional items and diversity in inventory. This is a must-stop on the tour of all of the racing teams for both the history and uniqueness it offers.
