    Gladys Porter Zoo

    Gladys Porter Zoo

This is easily the best zoo I've ever been to. My heart goes out to the founders, curators, staff,…read moreand all those involved in the creation and maintenance of this zoo. The zoo is beautifully designed and is easy to walk. The layout lends to a great experience. I couldn't believe how close we could get to some of the animals! I had no idea this was the birthplace of Harambe, which made it all the more special. TITS OUT. I recommend this zoo to anyone visiting the Brownsville area

Let me start by saying this is my childhood zoo. It holds a very special place in my heart, so what…read moreI'm about to say comes from a place of love. More mister fans could be placed throughout the zoo. It's so humid and hot that the little shade, along with the sparsely located mister fans throughout the property, isn't sufficient enough during the hotter times of the year. Yes, I have noticed that there are fans and some other locations with smaller patches of canvas shading, but it's not enough; maybe the zoo can look into plants that will provide shade and vine plants that will grow and climb and create shade naturally in time. This location is currently going through a lot of remodeling. A lot of animals were not out. This could be due to the heat and humidity, and also, maybe they got relocated due to the remodeling. Trash. My biggest pet peeve is the trash that's lying around on the ground or an empty soda cup in the sections of the zoo where, before entering the doors, it states "no food or drink allowed." But somehow, while looking at the lionfish and seahorse, I found a kid's cup on the step, empty. I don't understand why people don't just pick up after themselves. I don't care for the zip line, but I get it; it's a tool to draw people into the zoo. I know the zoo is doing everything it can to improve itself, but it also needs to focus on the current exhibits it has, as well as the animals whose enclosures are outdated.

Beach Water Park (formerly Schlitterbahn)…read more I'd heard about this place for years under the Schlitterbahn name, so when we had a free Saturday we decided to finally check it out. There's active construction on the west side of the park, a pretty substantial pit dug out, so right away the place feels incomplete. The concept here is genuinely different from any water park I've been to. The whole thing is accessed via lazy river. You float from attraction to attraction, peel off at exit ramps, and wait in floating tube lines for each ride. No hauling a tube up four flights of stairs in flip-flops. That part I actually appreciated. The problem is the wait times are brutal. We sat in one line for 40 minutes before giving up and walking ourselves backward out of it. The line barely moved the entire time. On the way out, one of the employees mentioned capacity on the rides had been reduced from previous years. That explains it, and also doesn't make me feel better about it. The lazy river access system only works if the rides are actually moving people through. When they're not, you're just floating in a queue wondering why you left the house. Wouldn't prioritize coming back.

From cloudy dirty water to exposed electrical wires to the 20 frozen burgers ... this place needs a coat of paint.... It's pretty cheap and you get an hour and a half out on the bay searching for dolphins and taking in the views. Parking is pretty accessible and you ride on Murphy's Law out to the bay. The boat is a bit older but clean and cared for. The captain narrates portions of the cruise to stay interactive but the workers make all the difference. They are extremely friendly and do a great job during the portion where they show off the wildlife they caught earlier that day. One of the biggest pros for us is that they were dog friendly, we couldn't believe it (our dog couldn't either but had a great time). We saw a few pods of dolphins, some in twos, others in fours. They don't stay above the water for long so we recommend being very ready to snap photos as soon as they break the surface. The workers will also go around asking if you would like them to take your photo which is a nice plus as well. Altogether, the experience was very fun. The only slight downside is that the heat really can get to you but prepare accordingly and you should be all set. You can also byob so that's pretty important to note. Definitely a tour we'd recommend checking out if you're in SPI.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around how the incident even happened because it makes no sense given the location of his injury and the set up of the grooming table. He usually gets handled by Zaida who wasn't there today. I couldn't schedule an appointment online with her because it says all slots are unavailable so I had to call in an appointment. I trust everyone who is employed there know how to handle dogs properly and carefully. Well I get a call maybe little less than an hour after dropping him off. All that was said to me at first was there was an incident with Tyson and they are taking him to the pet clinic, Pet Doctor 911 in mcallen. I asked what happened and the employee who called me said she doesn't know. I had to literally raise my voice and demand to speak with someone else just to get an answer. You can't call someone and tell them oh we have to take you dog to the hospital but I don't know why. So finally I was told he had a cut on his paw that he got from the grooming table tether. They told me he was being put up on the table when his paw got caught in the neck tether and he got spooked and tried to jump off resulting in the tether slicing his dewclaw. I'm still confused as to how his paw would even get caught in that tether to begin with. And from the position and location of the injury it does not seem possible to me. They took him to a clinic that we've never visited ( he sees the doctors at Banfield pet Hospital since his insurance is through them). This place would not let me enter with him for the consultation with the doctor. I had to wait there in my car until they were done. Was not given a time frames. Their policy stated if you leave the vicinity they would charge you $45 fee on top of your vet bill. Worst experience for me and my pet. He had already been hurt somewhere and now he has to go into an unknown place alone. No one from petco offered an apology nor called to check on the status of my pet after the incident. I'm not even sure if they paid the clinic because once my pet was released, the technician asked me to contact the groomers which I had did an hour earlier after talking on the phone with the veterinarian. I asked if I needed to stay until they received payment but they clinic assured me they would get in contact with Petco to resolve the bill.
