I absolutely love Dr. Swengel and his team, especially Eric! I have freckles, lots of them. I used to like them, but as I get older I feel they age me. So after visiting another dermatologist in Los Gatos and not loving experience, I decided to check out Refined Dermatology. I was so lucky that Eric helped me during my first visit! Eric started by taking pictures of my face for a skin analysis on their Visia machine. It measures your brown spots, redness, pores, texture, etc. and grades you relative to others of the same age and skin type. This helps narrow down your problem areas and shows what to focus on. It also told me the "age" of my skin, which was older than me! Then Dr. Swengel discussed all the different treatments and what he thought would work best for me. Since I started coming in, my skin has vastly improved. I've done numerous treatments including BBL, Halo, Q Max and the Perfect Peel. They have all really helped with my freckles and texture. I barely have any freckles left! The only thing that hasn't improved much are my pores. Hopefully this improves in time. I like everything about this office. They are always prompt with appointments, they're flexible with scheduling (they've even seen me on a Saturday), they aren't pushy and don't force products on you, and most importantly they really know their stuff! My family and friends have noticed the improvement in my skin and have made appointments themselves. Great skin is an investment but it is so worth it! I wish I started sooner! read more

Dr. Swengel is definitely one of the bests! It's hard to find a Dr. that really listens to you and genuinely cares about you. He takes the time and answers all your questions and concerns. There is also an amazing esthetician there, her name is Sashah. Such a sweetheart and very knowledgeable. I've gotten a few dermasweeps from her and even a peel. She walks you through exactly what she is doing and is definitely concerned about you and your comfort. I could go on and on about the great experiences I have had at this office. Very impressed with Dr. Swengel and his staff. They all were extremely courteous and friendly -- it felt like they really enjoyed working there. Dr. Swengel treated a burst blood vessel on my nose (under the skin) and was very thorough in making sure it was good as gone by the time I walked out of there (just ten minutes later!). I only wish I had thought of seeing him sooner as I've been frustrated by this red mark on my nose for over a year! After assessing my lesion, he also made sure I knew that he would retreat me at no cost if for some reason one treatment didn't take it away for good (since my little mark was small enough that he was confident it could be treated in one go). I appreciated that he was confident enough in his work (and equipment) to commit to this. I've seen Dr. Swengel for years, and recently saw Dr. Roy for an upper bleph. He and his staff are amazing! As a redhead, I was expecting recovery to be rough, as I tend to swell like a blowfish, but I didn't. I have a size/shape disparity between my eyes, and he warned me that he wouldn't be able to address that, but it was definitely improved! For many years I've needed to lift my brows in an exaggerated manner to read street signs in the distance, etc, and I don't have to do that anymore without my hereditary heavy lids weighing on my eyes! I couldn't be happier. My results look completely natural, I don't look "Real Housewifey" or like I'm stuck in a wind tunnel. My father was 95 (almost 96!) when he passed away this year and had been going to Refined Dermatology since he moved to Los Gatos a few years ago. He was dealing with frequent skin cancer issues from growing up in a time without sunscreen. He had very thin, delicate skin as he got older. The staff at Refined Dermatology took such good care of my dad and really made him feel welcome in the office. Dad worked with Jaeny Kim, FNP. She made it as pleasant as possible for him to be diligent in taking care of any thing that crept up on his skin. She was friendly, warm and caring and gave dad good advice on how to care for his aging skin. I consider Jaeny an important part of my dad's "Medical Care Team" and was comforted to know he was in such good hands during the last years of his long and fruitful life. I was referred to Dr Swengel by a friend. My visit was great! I was greeted by a friendly staff, and there was literally no wait at all. The Dr. saw me on time. Dr. Swengel was honest, and gave me all the information I needed in regards to my concerns. I called in today at about 10 A.M, looking to get a chemical peel done the same day. The lady who picked up the phone was VERY friendly, knowledgable and attentive. I was so shocked that already over the phone they were so nice and so attentive to my needs. They scheduled me in and when I came in I met both Dr Swengel, the esthetician Sashah, and another very kind man whose name I cannot remember. The staff are very, very friendly and definitely know what they are doing. Dr Swengel assessed my skin and then Sashah took a look at my skin. She recommended that I get the perfect peel but because it was a bit out of my budget I decided to go with the Obagi Radiance peel which was $100. Because I still wanted to stay within a budget but I wanted to see certain results she offered to do TWO layers instead of one, and at the end she even decided to do three layers on some areas. Very sweet woman and she knows her stuff. She definitely gave me a very good deal for what I paid for. As for the actual results, since it is the first night after getting the peel, I haven't seen the full results and my face is still very puffy and red but I can say so far I am very happy with what I paid for. I have had pretty reactive/ sensitive skin from my teenage years into adulthood and it is finally being transformed into gorgeous skin thanks to these professionals. I get acne facials by Hannah, she is literally the best! So gentle, knowledgable and efficient. I look forward to seeing her because I know how much my skin needs it. They also carry their own line of products formulated by the doc himself, and I could not live without the face wash and moisturizer. DO NOT come here for laser! In fact run away as fast as you can. This doctor ruined my face! I saw him twice. First time for spot treatment (which went fine) still costing me $500 for a few zaps. Then a came back for another treatment and he completely blew my face up. I had so much swelling I ended up in the ER! I had to not only get on steroids for weeks but also steroid cream. This doctor is DOING double passes on a machine that recommends ONE pass for the type of redness/spider veins I have. When my husband called the office and spoke to the doctor he assured us he would "get me back to normal for free" turns out HE's a liar. I have so many point of contact burns on my right cheek. A giant red spot under my nose and so many broken capillaries I DIDNOT have before! You can clearly see my face and neck LOOK HORRIBLE!!!! Yet his only concern was my swelling went down. He's a greedy man with zero bedside manner and simply cares about filling his wallet above his patients feelings. All I wanted was to get back to my pretreatment self and he blew me off. Save your money ladies and gents and go play out in traffic. You'd really have better odds of making it out unscathed! They have many lasers here which is awesome. Dr. Swengel performs a great Clear and Brilliant laser. They charge an extra fee for the Dr. to perform your laser versus a nurse to perform your laser procedure. From my experience, I prefer Dr. Swengel over a nurse. Just to give you an idea of how good this place is, I drive an 1hr and 45mins to get treated and an 1hr and 45mins back. Been to the office a few times now, and have had 100% positive experiences with everyone I have worked with. The NP, Jaeny was awesome and very confident in her knowledge. I did a full skin check with her, and she also did a BBL treatment on me. I also had an Silk Peel with Hannah and she was AMAZING! She was warm, friendly and took time to explain to me what she was doing and how she felt my skin would benefit from specific procedures. Both women were professional, nice, and budget conscious which I find very welcoming. Had CoolSculpt back in April and have been meaning to post about my good results and the staff at Refined Dermatology. They all take extra time to explain what they are suggesting as a treatment plan for best results and working within my budget. CoolSculpt worked on the excess fat I had on my sides! I was in a desperate state to get my skin back to what it was, and Dr.Swengal and Sasha together have helped me get back on track. He is a very caring and knowledgeable dermatologist. I've had a positive experience with Refined Dermatology in the past but this last experience has change my mind and my dermatologist. Dr. Swengel recommended Restylane Refyne eye filler and Refind MD Eye cream for the hollows under my eyes. I had the (painful) injections but had to returned to his office within a week because I had two puffy sacks under my eyes. Dr. S. said it may have been too much filler and he removed some (again very painful). I returned for a second time two months after the after this because was still a sack under my right eye that was not there before. Dr. S said the product was absorbed now and nothing could be done to remove the product. He applied a small amount of Botox to the area to relax it so the puffy area wouldn't be as noticeable (very painful again). It is still noticeable. When I called last month to ask about returning the eye cream that has done nothing for my dark circles, the receptionist (Jill I think) said she would ask the office manager and get back to me. No call back. This is why I am now giving a negative review on Yelp. I am extremely disappointed at the lack of quality of both Restylane Refyne eye filler and Refind MD Eye cream and the lack of quality of the application of the injectable. I did chose to go through one painful injection but to have to try to rectify it with two more is ridiculous and unprofessional. Not to mention I am out over $800 for nothing but pain and aggravation. I would not recommend Refined Dermatology! read more

I'd like to update my review for Refined Dermatology... after posting this review I received an email from Eric Kies at Refined Dermatology offering me a 20% refund and 20% toward additional services, IF I agree to take down my negative posts. (BE CAREFUL folks, Refined Dermatology runs their CoolSculpting service like a business- you aren't treated like a patient). I responded to his offer with a counter offer, in mid-Sept. (since we're now in a business-like negotiation) and have yet to receive a response. I've followed up twice- no response. While CoolSculpting didn't work from me and I want to discourage anyone from going through what I went through (or the permanent damage it caused) the real issue here is the way I've been disregarded by Refined Dermatology, even after Dr. Swengel himself examined me and agreed something had gone wrong. They never once followed up with me until they wanted me to take down my negative review. Before you consider doing CoolSculpting at RD think about this... most the positive reviews are when everything went right. It's when something goes wrong, and you feel like you need your "Doctor" the most, Dr. Swengel, Eric Kies and the entire staff will show you no empathy, offer no solutions and in my experience, ignore you. read more

If there was a way to give no stars I would. I am extremely disappointed by my results and the lack of response I received after trying to "work something out for my silence" if I didn't write negative reviews. I spent a lot of money on cool sculpting. I had it done to my stomach, love handles, arms and my bra area. It didn't work. In fact it had such a bad adverse reaction that my skin sags, folds and is as hard as a rock in some areas. It's very uncomfortable and embarrassing. When I complained to the practice I was offered other free services. None of which worked. I was actually happy they tried to provide some type of costumer service. They offered my 6 sessions of some body melting treatment which of course was more time wasted as it didn't work. My guess, it was to appease me and keep my quiet. Then when all that failed they offered to give me more free services and some of my money back. I explained to them that this experience has taught me I have no desire to try these expensive types of boutique services again. I never even met with the actual doctor who turns out to be a dermatologist and not a plastic surgeon. I had my treatments done by Eric and other people who honestly I don't know what their credentials are. I have sent at least 5 emails since September trying to work out this "deal" and it's been radio silence ever since. They already have all of my money so why honor their word of working something out at this point. The staff is friendly up front because they don't have your money yet. But once they set you up for their credit services to pay for the treatments forget about any customer service after that. This was a total waste of money, time and frustration from all sides. Never would I recommend this place to anyone nor would I recommend cool sculpting to anyone. It's painful and it doesn't work. To say I am disappointed is an understatement. read more

I went here for minor ice pick scars on my face a year ago, dr Swengel put some acid on my face that was too strong and ended up getting infected, by the time he gave me antibiotics it was too late I now hAve permanent craters on my face, the staff here is terrible they called me by the wrong name and acted. Like I was imagining things when I stayed my concerns after paying thousands of dollars letting him try to repair this mistake, my face is destroyed and I have recently contacted a lawyer I plan to file a lawsuit for malpractice...do not go here it's a joke and a scam. read more

This place is not trustable. This is my first time writing a review on Yelp. I am pretty upset on the result. In mid Feb, I took my teenager son to remove some flat tinny moles on his face that was from Sun as my son swims outdoor often. The moles are really tiny like 1/5 of a piece of rice. They charged for $150 for consultation and said this fee will be towards to the payment of the procedure. That is fine. Total cost is $400 for around 12 tiny flat moles. The doctor said it's very easy and will be done in 5 mins. Although they mentioned sometimes needs 2nd treatment, I expect my son's case is very very simple and the doctor agreed so. Now, after procedure, more than a month's gone, none of moles fell off from my son's face, instead, they became darker and bigger. I called the office, they said my son need 2nd treatment and would charge another $400; as discount, they will do $250 instead. So, twice treatment for 10+ tinny, flat moles for $625??? I have been seeing Dr. Swengel since he worked at Kaiser and have always been pleased with his knowledge. Now that he has his own practice he is able to offer more types and current procedures to his clients. His assistants and Office Manager, Eric are all excellent and very professional. Time is taken to get to know the patient and discuss the pros and cons of all treatments available. I have not been able to attend any seminars due to my work schedule but would recommend them to anyone thinking of having any cosmetic work done. It's a chance to get a feel for the office staff and Dr. Everyone is always so friendly and passionate about their work. and it's a joy to just drop by. I highly recommend Dr. Swengel. The consultation ended up being less than 5 minutes with the doctor, who seemed like he had a rush to be out, and charged over $100. I ran out of refills on my prescriptions, I called the office in the morning to let them know that the pharmacy had sent the request for refill approval. Nothing has been done after a day had passed, I called again an hour before they close for the weekend and the front office lady said she would check on it, and call me back. The request was completely ignored because No one bothers to call me back. And I called the pharmacy once again to verify the status... and it was still pending on approval. The office is closed for the weekend, now I'm without medication for the weekend.... if it comes down to it, I'll have to visit the ER for emergency prescriptions. read more

I stopped going to this dermatologist two years ago because I saw Dr. Swengel exactly once after choosing him as my new dermatologist. On subsequent bi-yearly appointments, I was handed off to his physicians assistant, who was very much less thorough in her check-ups than Dr. Swengel. His reviews are the reason I selected him as my Dr. I want to see him, not his PA! Just this week, over two years since my last visit to this office, I got a bill for the deductible amount not paid for by my insurance. The billing entity in this case is The Skin Cancer Center of Silicon Valley, Inc. I argued (unsuccessfully) that I could have paid this amount when it was due (and received the tax deduction) via my flexible spending account, which I can't now do, because I can't use this years contributions to pay for services rendered two years ago. The new collections person at Skin Cancer Center apologized & indicated they had billed me multiple times in 2015 via mail, but was unable to explain how I got the bill this week, two years after the service & didn't get any other bill via US mail. Nor could she explain why I had not been contacted via telephone or email; both of which they've had since the first time I walked into this office. Ultimately, my complaints are more with the way Dr. Swengel has chosen to run his business, not my experience with him as a physician. It all matters. You may wish to consider my experience when you make your decision about a dermatologist. read more
