I have been going here regularly to Ron for almost a year. Initallly I was charged $19.00 for an undercut. After a few visits the cost went up to $22.00. This most recent visit I was charged $28.00. Again, this is for an undercut. When I made mention of the increase, the response was pretty much an "oh well" along with a shoulder shrug. Needless to say I will not be going back. There are plenty of places in a Richmond to get a cut for a better price with better customer service. read more

I got one of the best haircuts I have ever gotten from Dot at Refuge For Men. Dot easily figured out what I wanted from my vague instructions and then talked about exactly how she was going to do it. The basic haircut includes a shampoo which is nice. For $25 plus tip this place is a great deal for a great haircut. Make sure you schedule your appointment online before hand. Not at all pleased with my haircut- fading was done choppy at different points around my head, and the hair around my temples wasn't only cut into different angles, but the right side cut way up into the hairline. I had to go to another shop in order to get it fixed. Definitely not inclined to return. read more

I'm really, really sad to make this review. I have been going to Dot for about a year and a half. I have referred many friends to her. But I've grow tired of a couple things and I won't be returning. The main problem she has is with holding appointments. I have things to do, and I often schedule haircuts into my day while I'm getting other things done. That means there is about an hour window max that I have to work with. In the year that I have gone to Dot, I have never started a haircut on time. Many times they start 20-30 minutes past my appointment. This is the biggest issue she has. Dot is a really nice person, she is cool as hell and she will work with you to get the haircut you desire. But, today she gave me the run-around and wasn't willing to admit she messed up / right the issue (I don't want to get into specifics of the problem, but it was a scheduling thing) and it was kind of the last straw for me. read more

I had a review on here earlier but it got removed for some reason. I went to Refuge for the first time back in June and it was, by far, the worst hair cut experience I've ever had. It was even worse than the time I got my hair cut by a shaky-handed 76 year old who clipped my ears a few times. They gave me the apprentice without telling me he was an apprentice. He ended up giving me the EXACT hair cut I told him I did NOT want because he kept messing up and had to cut my hair shorter and shorter to correct his mistakes. He kept going over the "fade" area of my hair (or where a fade should have been) for 20 minutes until one of the experienced, full-time barbers came over and salvaged my cut. That's when he dropped it on me "sorry, I'm the apprentice." THANKS FOR THE HEADS UP, REFUGE! :D I had no idea he was an apprentice. I wasn't informed of this until I was 35 minutes into the cut. I wanted to get a fade with a good amount of length on top (around 2-3 inches) and I left with what was essentially a buzz cut I could have done at home. Adding insult to injury, this apprentice gave me razor burn all down the back of my neck from the clippers. I just got my hair cut at a very popular, relatively new barbershop and the guy cutting my hair asked me "Dude, who cut your hair last?" When I told him Refuge, he laughed and started telling the other three barbers. I told him about my experience and he said he used to work there and that it's a joke of a business. He found it pretty ridiculous that they gave me an apprentice without telling me. Anyways, Refuge is a shady business, in my opinion. Sell the pool table that no one uses and get some apprentices in there that won't ruin your reputation. Oh, and ask customers whether they are okay with paying full price for a hair cut from an apprentice. read more

Dot gave me a great cut, taking my suggestions and executing seamlessly. She talked about some of the options I had for styling and then hooked me up with Jinx to get washed out and styled. Jinx gave me a great towel/massage and styled me up. They have some quality products if you're running low and the prices are beyond reasonable for the level of service I received. read more

These reviews are all crap. This place is a hole in the wall and Dot is terrible. Do not go here if you expect a decent haircut. She spent no more than 5 minutes actually cutting my hair and left to go smoke a cigarette in the middle of it. I had to get it fixed somewhere else because it was a half an inch longer on one side than the other. I'm not that picky but good lord, I wasted 25 bucks going here. Please take this into account before you schedule an appointment: I had a VERY BAD experience at refuge for men yesterday. I waited 40 minutes for a prescheduled "15 minute clean up" which was scheduled for 4:45, but did not begin until after 5:25. I had a family dinner at 6:45 which I was late for as a result but since I have important plans for this weekend, I waited, as I really wanted to look good for an important event I have. I arrived 5 minutes early to make sure I didn't negatively affect my barber's future appointments and time schedule also I didn't want the cleanup to feel or be rushed. Disregarding the long wait, when it began, I had one simple and very important request, "please leave the sideburns the same length". I said it twice making sure my barber acknowledged the request and since I was getting such a minor cut this one aspect was vital. I had my back to the mirror (this makes no sense as you should be able to watch what is happening to your hair while it is being cut to make recommendations/ give instructions, however, this seems to be their standard procedure) and when I was turned around about 5 minutes later, they were cut in half and significantly shorter (which sucks because they are hard to grow back and they are the one thing I care about with my hair). I also was very apparently growing stubble that was attached to the sideburns. Now that there is a half inch gap between this and my sideburns, I have had to completely shave my face. It also seemed like a very rushed cleanup as it lasted about 7-8 minutes. The barber was making up for lost time at the expense of my head. I waited about 40 minutes for a 8 minute long and very disappointing haircut. I have patience for the wait.. but when you make one request to someone that you are paying to cut your hair they should respect it or consult you if they think something that goes against your request will look better... I am very disappointed as I thought I had found a place I really liked with a barber I really liked as well. When It came time to pay, I pulled out a $5 dollar off card that I was given last appointment. I was told this was only valid for full priced haircuts. I knew this was the case but I wrongly assumed that since I waited so long, I was visibly unhappy, and my barber ignored my one simple request, that he would give me some kind of discount. Nope... Full price. $18.75 down the drain. I would have paid another $20 on top of that to not have that experience. I also want to mention that during my last 2-3 haircuts there, I have never received the hot towel or other services that supposedly come along with the full priced hair cut and are listed on their website. I've also been charged for a full haircut when it was just a cleanup and within the 15 minutes twice. It seems as though my particular barber disregards the importance of and costumer service associated with the $10 cheaper cleanup as apposed to full price haircut. Dot and her staff seem to be nice people and I enjoy the cool atmosphere but customer service and attention to detail seem to be seriously lacking at refuge for men. It seems as though they have focused too much on their atmosphere and lost sight of the basic principles that go along with running a barber shop. :( read more

I have been coming to Refuge for Men and getting my haircut by Dot for over one and half years. Dot and her shop are by far the best in Richmond. She consistently exceeds my expectations and always provides exceptional service. From the moment you walk until the moment you leave, the entire experience is a pleasure. Dot's shop is comfortable, welcoming, and a relaxing environment. I often arrive early to my haircuts just so I can enjoy watching the HUGE flat screen tv while listening to the awesome music she plays. Also, you can schedule, cancel, and change your appointments completely online or by using her Refuge for Men app anytime of day or night. She also sends you a reminder about your appointment which is much appreciated. I'm not sure what I did before Dot or Refuge for Men and I don't ever plan on living without them. I just received the worst haircut of my life from Gus. When first arriving I mentioned a few times that I only want a temp fade and a line up on the beard and yet he still manages to begin to cut my hair up top. I had to stop him and tell him again I only want a temp fade and preceded to point to the area i want cut. But yet again asks me 3 or 4 more times where I want my cut. I should've stopped him there but I let him finish cause I didn't want to leave the store with a fucked up one sided cut. Completely didn't do the under side of my beard and the back of my head is fucked up. In my honest opinion I would've been better off going to first day of classes with no haircut, then whatever the fuck you call this. I have trusted the same barber at Presidentials for 4 long years but I got greedy and couldn't wait until they opened back up tomorrow to get a cut. But guess where I'm going tomorrow? Back to my original barber so he can fix this bullshit of a haircut he called. And the nerve to still charge me $22 are you fucking serious?! I am never coming back to this establishment and will never recommend It to anyone. I'll even go as far as finding my friends a new barber for those that go there and let shit like this slide. I love getting my hair cut at refuge because it's always a fantastic haircut but what sets this place apart is the customer service. The staff is all extremely friendly and they always do right by their customers. Today I had a haircut scheduled with Dot and she was running behind schedule. I didn't get into the chair until about 45 minutes after my appointment time which naturally was a little irritating but then to my amazement I was given my haircut free of charge because of the wait. This place is a fantastic barbershop that I will be frequenting for as long as possible. Keep up the great work guys. read more

I went to Refuge For Men due to reviews on Yelp. I was excited to maybe find a place again that would take the time and effort on my hair for a great (not good) haircut. I have been searching for two years since my last stylist (who cut my hair for 25 years) retired. I have not been satisfied with the 10 min clip and zip chains. Needless to say I was disappointed. Its a trendy place and the price is fair but quite frankly, the hair cut was not that good. My wife told me it was the worst I ever got. Even though I requested, I had no tapering or thinning done and my hair looked liked I had never had it cut after about a week. The reservation system is great, Dot was on time and really does have a good environment for men, but really, for the money, the cut was not that good. I went to Refuge For Men really wanting to like it and find a home again. Sadly, it didn't make the cut. read more

Honestly probably one of the worst cuts I've ever received. Had a walk in appointment and the barber was nice and friendly. But I asked for a pretty simple 1.5 buzz on the side and finger length cut on top. It took him approximately 45 min just for the buzz and when he began to cut with scissors, I'm pretty sure he was not comfortable with it. In the end I left the place after paying almost $30 for a crap hair cut and luckily he cut so little off that I was able to go down the street to another barber who fixed it. Look, like most guys I value a good, reasonably-priced haircut. And like most guys, I was under the assumption that a good haircut was simply that; good. My whole life I've been told, "Yeah, you have these funny cowlicks that grow upwards- like a sloth, and that makes your neckline hard to shape," or "Well you see, your hair grows faster around the crown of your head and..." Basically, excuses. The first time I went to Dot we chatted shape of the cranium, work, her shop... Wait, the cranium? I mean, I got an anatomy lesson as background for the ideal haircut. Scheduled an appointment with Dot. Showed up on time, and was asked if I had an appointment by a girl sitting outside on a bench. I said that I did, with whom and when, and went inside, where I was immediately asked if I had an appointment by a different girl, who then told me I could sit. Dot had someone in her chair already. I waited about 20 minutes (during which I was asked again, by a barber, if I had an appointment) before Dot was finally ready for me. To be fair, I've never had great luck with haircuts over the years. This was about my 9th time getting my hair cut by Dot. Sometimes she's been brilliant (which is why I've kept on going), sometimes iffy and inattentive. She rarely seems to indicate remembering who I am. This time, I explained what I wanted, and she seemed to understand, but didn't really ask any follow up questions. She seemed distracted and hurried. After about 7 minutes of working on my hair, she silently handed me the mirror and it just looked terrible. I wasn't sure what to say- surely, she didn't think this was a good haircut, or something I could conceivably want? I've explained how I want my hair cut the exact same way on every visit and this looked nothing like that. I asked if she could fix it in one or two places and possibly salvage it, and she seemed frustrated and annoyed that she still had to deal with me. Another 2 minutes, she hands me the mirror, and I reluctantly pay and leave without making a scene. She knew that I knew that she'd rushed, done a bad job, and didn't care. It stung. I had sat waiting on the bench for longer than it took her to cut my hair into an unfixable mess. At the moment I'm waiting for my hair to grow long enough that it can be salvaged by someone else. I have been to Refuge twice now and was very pleased with both the results and the process. The staff is very nice and they do high quality work in a very calm and easy going atmosphere. "Bentley" the shop dog rounds out the setting. I have visited with a different barber each time I have gone and each took the time to ask me what I wanted and then took their time with their craft. Kudos to Ron the last time I was there. I was impressed with how much hand vs. clipper cutting each barber did. I recently tried another barbershop in the area which will drive me back to Refuge in the future. Pardon the (pic) pun, but I am a proud Refugee. read more
