I have major brand loyalty towards REI for all things outdoors gear! I think my first purchase with them was 12 years ago, when I got a big pack for travel backpacking. I immediately signed up for the membership which meant I'd get "dividends" on what was at the time a big purchase for me the next year. Over the years, any time I've needed good quality outdoors gear, I always go to REI! My good hiking boots to mountain climb in, a smaller Camelbak for hikes (and festivals), snow gear, etc. In that way, REI is really kind of connected to a lot of big memories and experiences I've had! I love that the membership is for life. I don't even really know all the terms but there are some ridiculous warranty/guarantees for things that break over time. The return policy is pretty crazy (though I've never needed to use it). It all really reinforces this sense that REI really cares about their customers getting good quality, durable products that they love. REI is not beholden to shareholders and has a great ethos caring about and contributing to non-profit organizations, conservation efforts, and getting people outdoors. ALSO, doesn't hurt that the stores and products are beautiful! The aesthetics and design are great, and the workers are always friendly and helpful. read more

Shout out to the REI Co-Op membership! I popped in this past weekend to get some nature binoculars and found that I had a $25 credit that I forgot I had so I had a nice little discount on the nice pair I picked up. They keep track of everything in their system so even if you don't bring a coupon/voucher for it they'll be able to pull it up. Staff was super friendly and helpful. The binoculars were behind a glass case and the clerk helped me locate the ones I had IDed online even thought it was only available in the back. They had it pulled from inventory and waiting for me at the cashier when I checked out. I also got some great stuff on clearance and they had some really rad gear that made me wish I was traveling to one of my beloved national parks again soon. But I know where to find it when I need it! read more

Lots of staff available but no one approached and offer assistance. Free WiFi. Large selection of clearance items. Went to this location hoping to find a parka or vest to keep me warm during winter. Sadly, there's a few selection of my favorite brands like Patagonia, Arcteryx and Northface. I think the REI in Troy has much bigger space to display more items per brand. Sale as much as 20-30% off in selected winter items. Great parking space. Clean restroom. Good price compared to shopping online directly to the brands' website. read more

I discovered that I had a problem with my bicycle pedal and needed some new ones. The technician at the Ann Arbor store gave me a new pair of pedals and installed them for FREE. Another customer ordered them and never showed up for them. The bike technicians are very helpful and professional. I'm glad I have a life membership with REI!!! read more

I always love an REI, even when they are smaller than my usual in my hometown. I wanted to stop in and check an item that was out of stock in my size at my store the day before we left on our trip. It was not yet even posted online. So we popped into this store when we had some free time and though they too were missing the size on the display rack, the typically friendly, well trained staff person checked the computer which showed my size in stock so went to the back to look for it. The shipment was still boxed from arrival but the order had been scanned in already so she found the box, unpacked it and brought it out. I tried it on, decided it was just what I needed and on the last day of a special in store only discount coupon, I was able to make the purchase. Great place for a good pair of gloves, but their stock is limited and the sales guy helping us kept saying that this store was smaller and doesn't have all the variety of the Northville or Novi store. Not what you want to hear when looking for something specific. They don't carry ANY women's size 11 winter boots. Which is annoying. Socks are in three different places and about impossible to find someone to help you when needed. Still, this is the only place around with quality gear. read more

This is a smaller REI location - hence the 4 star (only for the selection). I came here to try out some camping great. The staff was wonderful, they showed me tents, sleeping pads, and sleeping bags that were catered to my needs. They spent extra time with me letting me try different combinations of pads and sleeping bags. My boyfriend and I set up a tent in the middle of their floor to make sure it would fit both of us. Great service, great experience. Will come back in the future. read more

When I first started getting active, a friend referred me to REI because he was a member and wanted me to use his card. You don't have to be a member to shop here, but it helps: you get cut a check at the end of the year with money back depending on the items that you've purchased. they say up to 10% on eligible purchases - for me this usually evens out to about 6%. The store itself is pretty large. Very expansive - quite appropriate for an outdoorsey store, eh? They have a very inclusive selection too. It's comforting to know I can usually find anything outdoorsey that I need - I recently just bought everything I needed for winter running here. Their section of energy bars, as usual for outdoor places, is a bit of a rip. You can do better at health markets. Great prices, great sales, great selection (even more comprehensive online), and the quality of service is up there. I'm a fan. read more

REI - Sports Wear Near Me - Ann Arbor, Michigan

I travel frequently and I visited REI locations all over the U.S. I lived shopping at the other REI locations. However, my experiences at the Ann Arbor REI have been awful. I recently move to A2 and was happy to see REI was here. However, after four visits to this location, I shall not return. There is very little customer service at the A2 location. There were hardly any other customers during 3 of my 4 visits -- and plenty of staff on duty. I was ignored. When I asked for help, I had to wait a long time for someone to assist me. And the staff assisting me were inpatient. read more

Clerk in hiking/camping was too involved in a conversation to help, so she sent me to someone in bikes, but they couldn't help so sent me back to the women in camping who didn't seem to have the knowledge (or still didn't want to be interrupted) to answer my question. Then when checking out, these clerks also were involved in lengthy conversations as the check out line continued to grow. This was not a matter of short staffing. This is a great REI location. Everyone is extremely friendly and helpful. Whenever I have a question there is always someone knowledgeable to answer anything I throw their way. The store is always clean and organized. There is a lot of parking available right outside the front of the store. I have bought a variety of camping supplies, hiking gear, and even workout clothes from this REI. One of the tents was bought for backpacking, however, the first time we used the tent it leaked water from the rain. We took the tent back to the store and they promptly refunded us, even though the tent was out of the original packaging! Amazing return policy!! You can become a member for a one-time $20 fee, which is well worth it!! They have free classes (to members) throughout the month and some more specialized classes that come with a fee. One thing to note is their items rotate based on the season. For example, in early Spring they get several kayaking and SUP boards and bikes. But the later it is in the season the harder these items are to come by. I recommend calling ahead or checking the app if you think the item you are looking for might be specialized and not in stock. read more

Love REI, love Ann Arbor, but I do not like the Ann Arbor REI. I have been to numerous REI stores, and this is the only one where a cashier was inexplicably rude to me, so rude that I think about this experience whenever I walk into an REI. With a few exceptions, the attitude and helpfulness among other staff in this store has been underwhelming. Furthermore, the store has a slightly inferior layout and merchandise selection compared to many other REIs. The nearby Northville REI is much nicer, worth driving the extra 20-30 miles and braving the suburban Detroit traffic. read more

This place kinda sucks. It makes me sad, b/c I love REI. I went in there to get some flip flops the other day, and not a single person asked me if I needed help. Additionally, a while back, my brother went in to try to return a completely unused bike that my dad's girlfriend had bought a little over a year ago. It's past their return policy, and my brother works at REI - so asked the guy to do him a favor. The guy told him point-blank, "If you hadn't told me you worked at REI I would have done it". What the f*** is that about? Really? Total Ann Arbor attitude. Selection is limited, parking is okay for Ann Arbor. If it weren't so convenient for the items I enjoy buying, I could easily never set foot in this place again. As it is, it will have to do if I'm in the area. read more

I first visited this REI before a trip to Africa. I needed new shoes that would withstand heat, slimey urban street water, and still look decent enough to wear to rotary club meetings. To make matters more complicated, I had a lot of food pain and had recently had surgery on my big toe (this little piggy went to market, and this little piggy went to the podiatrist ....) The shoe guy spent about 10 minutes quizzing me what I would be doing exactly, and about my toe surgery and how much walking I do. Then he did a bunch of measuring of my feet. And then, get this.... he suggested we call my podiastrist to get his feedback on several different possible types of shoes. I didn't even realize there were "types" but there are. I got Dr. Cohen on the phone who immediately said, "shoe shopping and they told you to get input from me? Where are you? REI?" He rattled off a couple of technical sounding things to the salesperson who immediately eliminated several pairs of shoes becuse they would stress the wrong parts of my foot. The salesperson asked Dr. Cohen a couple more things about joints and arches then asked me if I had lower back pain. I said, why yes, as a matter of fact I do. They agreed on an ideal shoe type and two okay alternatives and Dr. Cohen told him what type of insert I needed before signing off. Thirty minutes later I had "the shoe" and the right insert. My salesperson had me walk around the store wearing them for an hour to be sure (and he didn't mind when I scooted next door to Whole Foods to get a juice, even though I hadn't paid for the shoes I was wearing yet!). These shoes are really, the best. I am so happy with them.... And my recent glove buying experience was equally satisfying. After a failed trip to Biviouc (don't even get me started on that one) I visited REI where a real professional fited me for the perfect pair of gloves which were, incidently, $50 more at the "other store." read more

I camp between 30-45 days a year and this has been my home-base REI store for about three years. It may not be the largest REI, but they usually have an excellent selection of products and the staff is great. I especially like knowing people like Matt are on the floor with a real understanding of the equipment and various challenges we are confronted with in camping environments. I recently had a problem with an item I purchased at this location about a year ago and Matt took the time to listen, examine the issue in detail, and work with other staff members in helping me resolve the problem. I was very grateful and glad to know that REI, and this location in particular, are there for me not only when I'm looking for gear, but to provide support along the way when a problem occurs. My snowboarder friend introduced me to REI a while back, and I was happy to see one in Ann Arbor. After perusing around their website for a bit, I decided that a $20 membership would be worth it to take advantage of their co-op membership. One of the first things I noticed about REI besides it's vast size was the friendliness of the employees. When I was shopping for a jacket, this chick randomly said "hi" to me with a huge smile. Who does that nowadays!? They have a lot of older employees who look like they've been around the outdoorsy block, and gruffy beard-wearing 130 pound guys who obviously spend a lot of time in the mountains. Nevertheless, they're very knowledgeable and helpful. Their women's shoe section wasn't too large, but active apparel was. From what I saw, REI had a pretty good selection for most things but it's reallyyy pricey. I guess you really pay for the customer service, because unless you spend hundreds of dollars a year on gear the 10% max return (on selected items) is pretty negligible. read more

I came here in need of help to prepare for a trip to Iceland. Yes, Iceland. Camping no less, my very first time. The staff was very helpful and knowledgeable. I have a pair of hiking boots I still love over a year later, and a great variety of items. I needed rain proof gear, base layers, under garments, etc. The saleswoman clearly and expertly explained the difference between brands and fabrics, made recommendations, and encouraged me to try everything on. The bike shop is horrible. They are expensive and don't know what they are doing. Also, the staff is never around to help you. But I see them prancing around and flirting with each other. Last time I was in here, I asked for help and couldn't find any. I talked to a manager and wasn't impressed at all. A solid, well-stocked REI in a boring, slightly-crowded strip mall outside town. Friendly help (and enough of it), decent selection of most things (including XC skis and kayaks), and ship-to-store for weird online-only stuff. The location is fine with a car, as long as you don't mind the traffic from the neighboring Whole Foods; but it's definitely not the easiest place to get via bike. For non-motorized transport, Eisenhower and Ann Arbor-Saline roads are both fairly terrible, I'd usually approach by sneaking through subdivision playgrounds on S. 7th St. It's not a cute local shop, but the selection and overall quality are great. read more

When REI first opened, I had never actually heard of it. I thought great, another overpriced outdoors store, think Bivouac or Moosejaw. I ended up finding a Garmin Forerunner 205 at REI online on a heavy discount and decided on the store pickup. Even for the place having just opened, it was well organized and staff was friendly and knowledgeable. REI has a great, far-ranging selection for the outdoorsman or woman in everyone. Besides the Garmin, I've purchased an inexpensive canteen, a windproof/waterproof running/biking jacket and I've been happy every time. They have a great selection of affordable packs and other camping gear that I'll be sure to pick up when I need it. REI is by far better than Moosejaw and Bivouac, your wallet will agree with you on that. read more

This REI location is a little smaller than its Livonia/Northfield (5 Mile Rd) sibling. However it offers a wide selection (minus the bike section) of typical outdoor clothing and equipment. If you've been to any other REI you know its a great co-operative and I'm very pleased about the no questions asked 100% satisfaction guarantee. I've returned 3 products to date that had faults, and was very pleased to see them replaced. Great prices on most items, and the ability for hassle free returns makes it a no brainer. Mix in free classes (for surviving the outdoors) and you've got a great store! read more

I just loves me some REI to pieces. This is a small satellite store, with a limited selection of both outdoor gear and performance clothing, in a college town, and muy popular. Therefore, no women's sizes between XS and L. Unless you luckily pounce within a few days of restocking. (Well, ok, maybe if something runs small, then there will be only XS and S and the extremely rare M.) This hasn't changed since the store opened so really, don't bother, unless you want to get ticked off at rampant unavailability. If you see something online, call, don't assume it's in the store. Shop at Northville REI until Ann Arbor figures this out. Otherwise, great, typical highly professional REI expertise you can depend on, in all departments, they can tell you what you need, they have good stuff. REI Ann Arbor has sold me a fabulous backpack that elicited the admiration of an Appalachian o.g., a great nordic boot/binding combination for old skis to solve my finicky narrow heels problem, and awesome hiking boots that feel light and flexible like cross trainers. They just can't sell us medium-sized girl clothes. I'm sorry REI, I want this to work, baby let's get back together, please? read more

The selection easily 4-star, but the high quality merchandise here comes at a price. Wow. I found a great pair of running shorts, and a pair of running pants, and those two alone ran over $100. Don't get me wrong, they are Dri-fit, and will have outstanding performance, but, ouch. I did like the selection, and they had everything from bikes, biking gear, running gear, to camping and outdoor equipment. I'll be back, but only when I'm prepared to spend some bucks! read more

This store has been my go-to bike shop for a few months now. They're good for me since I ride a Cannondale and they're a Cannondale dealer. They take good care of me every time I go in and answer all my questions about how to take care of my bike on my own. When my chain broke, they replaced it, and when it broke again, they offered to fix it pro-bono with a new master link. Another time my rear derailleur broke, so I brought it into them to help with the warranty, and I had my bike back with a brand new derailleur in only a week. I only paid about $40 for labor since they had my back about the warranty. I'm definitely a loyal customer of theirs at this point. Sean is frequently the guy in the shop who comes out of the back to teach me anything I'm curious about when it comes to bike maintenance. He even gave me an old discarded chain just because I wanted something to practice on with my new chain tool. I've had great experiences with David, Sam, and all the other folks there too. read more

This location is smaller than most but has a decent size selection of camping gear, clothing, kayaks etc. Biking area needs a lot of work. They had only a few choices for biking apparel and helmets, which I guess made my selection process a lot easier. Pricing can be a tad steep, but you can expect that from a big name store. Employees are typically helpful and friendly. If you want quality outdoor/athletic activity store this REI hits the mark. read more

As a customer of REI since 2013 I was very unhappy with the customer service I received from the employees of REI. I purchased trekking poles in 2015 which had a defective clamp. I thought I would check with REI for there recommendations. Here are the responses I received. First response, what would you like us to do? Next, your item is no longer in warranty. Next, for $10 we can fix it. In addition, I'm going out to lunch now so it will be about 45 minutes before I could fix it. The representative did say I could do it myself with the use of any epoxy. These are not the response I had hope to receive from REI. I've always felt that REI would try to stand behind their products and go the extra mile for the customer. The attitudes of these employees was surprising and disappointing. So the real question is this. Why would REI chose to loose a valuable customer for a couple minute fix. I left discouraged and frustrated. These employees are the competitions best friends. Oh, I did fix the pole with epoxy and about 3 minutes of my time. For this small amount of time, REI could have saved a customer. read more

Exactly a twin of cabela's or Dicks. So, pricey but, great selection. You can get better prices once you pick out what you want there. Yeah, I did say that! I do not like overpaying. The shoe department sucked. You know how you are trying to look at a car and the salesman is like a shark stalking? Yeah that's this shoe department. They didn't have knowledge about shoes. The selection is great but they are awkward. I felt like saying back off dude...let me look, then tellinghim what shoe i wanted and saying back off dude again. If he was knowledgeable i would have been more tolerant. It felt more like being with a teenager on his first date! Just let me try it on instead of awkwardly walking, pacing, jiggling pockets. The check out people were great and helpful. The guy in camping with a beard was great. I bought my Garmin there but, my shoes elsewhere. read more

I'm a long time REI member and I purchased a pair of $220 Asolo boots back when they carried a unlimited warranty. The soles are falling apart (I expected to wear the soles out). REI Ann Arbor told me that they notified me of the warranty change two years ago so I should have returned the boots then. Of course the boots were fine two years ago. They suggested I contact Asolo and they don't cover them but said I could get them resoled for around $85. I'm done with REI and Asolo. Why pay a premium for boots that don't perform premium and why pay a premium to REI for service no better than an on-line shop? read more

The employees here have been super helpful each time I'm looking for a particular item (usually a jacket). Whether or not they have it in stock at this location, they'd go out of their way to make sure I find what I need. Be that continuously searching their stock or searching for a different location to see if there's one out there. Prices wise, it might not be the best. Shopping around online could be better, but if you're in need, REI is the place to go. Also, their sale section from time to time can have some hidden gems. Good items at reasonable costs. read more
