This has to be one of the most organized stores around town. Although I have been to many REI locations, and they basically all are. You walk in are immediately greeted by helpful faces asking how they can help. Which is great as the store is so big and has so many options, it surely can feel a little overwhelming. The employees there are experts in the outdoors, and genuinely want to see you walk out happy so you can go enjoy the outdoors too. Their return policy is amazing. This location is just off Franklin Road and has a huge and convenient parking lot. I usually just shop REI online, because there isn't a store near me. This was actually my first experience inside one. The staff were friendly, welcoming, and helpful. I was surprised by their huge bike section because that's not something you notice while shopping online. The gear carried by REI is priced high and I've gotten used to fully researching anything before I buy it. So walking around the store was nice, but unproductive. The workers are always beyond kind, and I've never had a negative experience with anyone, at this or other locations. The staff are super knowledgeable in several feeds, like climbing, hiking, and camping. You absolutely must check out their member sales when gently used items and select items in the store are heavily discounted. I really try not to write negative reviews, but I feel like I have to. I don't know if the older Aged female staff worker there was ageist, racist, or if she was just having a bad day, but I've worked in service and I would never treat someone the way she did. All I wanted to do was buy shoes for my birthday. But when I asked to see a shoe she went out of her way to ignore us. Even when we made eye contact and tried to speak to her she would acknowledged us and immediately make conversation with others. She never smiled at us but was so happy and kind to literally every other person that was there (they were all non POC). My boyfriend took me here because he said REI is known for having very helpful staff. I was excited this was my first time going, But we both decided to leave because we didn't want to support this business. Now we are buying my shoes elsewhere. I feel like the moment we walked in she was so cold to us and I just don't understand why. I hate to do this. Truly. I loooooove REI, so this review is specific to the bike department and its management. Purchased an e-bike. Got on the bike when I got home and the seat collapsed thus snapping off the taillight. Whatever. Won't even call an improperly secured seat after its "thorough inspection," strike 1. Bike stopped working after the first day, and I managed to lose the keys in the melee of trying to fix it. Head low, I sulked back into REI w/a broken/damaged bike and no keys. "We can't do anything without the keys" says the arms-folded employee without getting off of his stool. After several minutes of being educated on the importance of locks and how apparently they work best paired with keys, I offered a new idea. "Hey guys. Crazy thought. What if we replaced the keys?" Blank stares. Enter Joyce, the bicycle matriarch. Joyce tells me that YES I will need to get keys soooomehow(?) and best of luck. With this rousing pep talk in tow, I set about determining that the only way you can get new keys is through the store that you purchased the bike from. Strangely when I looked at my REI receipt it said REI. Same address and everything as the REI that told me locksmiths should be open Monday. I phone Joyce. I give Joyce the briefest of backstories on how I learned from Cannondale that while you shooould get it from REI, things "don't always go so well" and maybe contact another dealer and ruin their day with a problem caused by the store who shilled money away from a small, local business. Back to Joyce. "Doesn't always go so well?!?" Absurd she tells me. Then she tells me why- "Pssshh. We totally get replacement keys for people that have lost them all the time from other companies." My emission was a sputtering, cough-laugh mashup. Oh, Joyce. After I inceptioned the idea, she got right on calling Cannondale and the keys showed up in a short few days. Great. Bring the bike back in, and I'm told that instead of replacing the bike they would "prefer" to fix it, because obviously the bike that never worked has been "ridden." I can wait until they're "not so backed up" or I can pay $150 and get the newer, way more awesome model. Sold. Works great in the parking lot, get it home, and the motor defecates the linen. Back the next morning. "Hi. I'd like to return this bike that I bought last night." "Well we'll take a look at it when we're not so backed up." New plan. Let's wrap this up and leave as friends. Employee guy- "Ok, whatever. So your return is going back to two cards." Me- "Apologies sir, but I only have one card in my life." "Well this says two, do you have another card?" "I'm sorry for not having another card, but I still don't. Can you tell me what the $555.55 is for that's likely going to some other shlub's pocket?" "No." "Is there someone that can?" "Yes." Ok now we're getting somewhere! New manager steps in to take charge. He's got this. I can see it in his eyes. "Ok sir! So do you have both cards?" Me - "..." {tear ducts are in the bullpen warming up} After watching some YouTube videos on how to REI the dynamic duo determined that sometimes if you use your phone to pay (which is attached to the only card I possess), it can show up as a different set of last four digits. This process of determining how money works was apparently very exasperating for the less senior employee to a degree that I felt compelled to apologize. "I guess I'm just sorry I paid." "It's fine," he assured me. I'll never not shop at REI, but I think I'll stick to the clothing section. read more

I have been an REI customer for years. I am a member and I have shopped at this particular location since 2003. However, I have come to the point that I dread going in. Customer service is an essential part of good business. But, even customer service is optimal in moderation. During my last visit, within an hour of shopping, I think I was asked if I could be helped 20 times. As an introvert, that's like fingernails on a chalkboard. I felt like I was being followed. I felt like someone thought I was going to steal something. I mean, I know I might look a little shady, but I am the senior pastor of a church in Nashville. I am ok with being asked if I need help once, maybe twice. But, my last several visits at REI have been ridiculous. It's almost funny. I really want to support local, but I can't force myself into interrogation just to grab a pair of socks and some bicycle chain lube. This is why I shop online. read more

What's are the pros and cons of a carbon fiber bike frame vs. aluminium? Sure there are debates and flame wars I can consult on the internet, but I want a quick answer from someone who has first-hand knowledge. This REI is full of experts who are absolutely passionate about the outdoors and the products in their department. They let you test drive bikes, have great return policies on most equipment, and have good prices on both gear and apparel. They have a nice range of products in most categories, from entry level to serious enthusiast. Every employee I've interacted with at this location is friendly and helpful. I have been a Co-op member for a long time but this was the first time I have had to return a faulty product and have learned that their legendary return policy isn't all it's cracked up to be. I purchased an inflatable kayak and one side was loosing air so I took it back for an exchange 2 weeks later and after 1 use. I was told that it had a $100 price increase the week after I purchased it and that if I wanted to exchange it I would need to pay the $100 difference. Apparently I can have a brand new defective product for $100 less or I can pay a $100 premium to have one that actually works as intended. From now on I will buy from a mom and pop shop and pay the premium to support locals or buy from Backcountry. All I wanted was a working kayak but apparently that costs extra. read more

Best REI I have ever been to HANDS DOWN. It is now my go-to REI. Why? Many reasons. -They work for YOU. Awesome staff that always helps me find what I am looking for and gives me honest suggestions on products as well. -They are also extremely friendly. This is staff is more welcoming than my family when I come home from college. For example: I was looking for some gloves, I called up and a lady named Amy immediately picked up and confirmed they carried them. None of that Walmart phone service BS where you have to go through a menu that plays a cute little prerecorded message with the option to talk to a rep as the LAST number in hopes that you just hang up but if you connect they have to transfer you to "the glove department " only to have your call dropped after being put on hold for 5 minutes. None of that nonsense with REI. And while checking out, I asked if they had any fee stickers/posters (I have a little collection). Literally that moment, an employee pops up like the secret service and starts whispering into her earpiece asking the staff if they had intel on any leftover stickers or posters I could get. Her staff then started listing off REI promotional events that offered stickers while she is just replying "no we're out of those" "last one was just given away this morning" "yea but I shipped the last one out to that guy who called from Siberia". After exhausting all her options, she expressed a face of defeat, as if she had truly failed me. But all of the sudden, she whipped out her wallet to offer me an REI sticker from her PERSONAL collection. I was floored (since it was a replica of an REI poster I have in my room). Most horrible shopping experience I have had since this pandemic started. Our county does NOT have a current mask mandate and I personally witnessed multiple people being harassed by employees at this store. I witnessed an employee trying to get a toddler to wear a mask before allowing them into the store. The mother was obviously frustrated but just tried to comply so she could shop. As far as I know, we NEVER had a mandate for children that young. A young daughter of a close friend was also harassed by an employee and made to pull her mask up higher even though she was wearing it. They literally have a person at the front door acting as a bouncer of sorts trying to force customers into wearing a mask, even though it is no longer required in our county. I will never shop at this location again or bring family and friends near this place. Wish I could leave a ZERO star review!!! read more

I can't even begin to say how glad I am that I went to REI for new hiking shoes, instead of doing the try on 50 pairs at other sports stores kind of thing. I'd hiked 6.5 miles on old shoes that were wrong for my feet that day and decided enough is enough and went to REI at my boyfriend's suggestion. So, there's this girl in the shoe department (at the Brentwood, TN store) named Liz and if you are ever in need of new shoes...she's amazing to deal with. She not only gave me an education on why I roll ankles easily, but also gave me pointers on how to strengthen them. And if that wasn't enough, taught me how to lace my shoes to relieve unnecessary pressure on the tops of my feet that can cause numbness and tingling in other areas of the foot. I paid for shoes what I may have paid for shoes anywhere...but got ten times that value out of the education and fun in purchasing them. Liz was funny and helpful and I'm totally hooked. That was actually my first shoe purchase there, and will most definitely not be my last. read more

When I visit my hometown this REI tops my must stop in list (even when I don't really need anything). You can't beat the service here and the selection is top notch. They really have one of the best hiking pack sections of all the REIs I've visited. The staff here really know their stuff so don't be afraid to ask questions or strike up a conversation. I've never felt rushed and usually end up walking out the door with another bag full of "I didn't know I had to have this" stuff. Thankfully this time of year my dividend from my membership is pretty substantial after a year of shopping so I can walk out not feeling as guilty for buying another water filter, more dehydrated food for a future trip, hiking boots for my dog and my 200th pair of darn tough socks ! read more

When I got a flat tire, they said they could not work on the bike, even though they had done it twice before. To add insult to injury, the salesperson and manager were rude to me and refused to refund my membership. Do not go there. read more

Aside from Border's, this is my all time favorite place to spend money in Brentwood. I've had both of my bikes worked on here by the very qualified wrenches. They communicate well and quickly. I love to shop their clearance racks at season's end. They have excellent, quality clothing marked down to very affordable prices. On a writer's (miniscule) salary, this makes me happy. This is a great REI location, with a friendly and knowledgeable staff. My family and I have shopped here many times. We have also taken advantage of their community education offerings (camping classes taught in the store). We have also rented camping gear here and have had good experiences. I really, really WANT to love REI, but I just can't. It lacks that personal connection of a local outdoor store where the staff IS the R&D and testers of the exact gear they sell. I feel the people here, albeit may have a passion for the outdoors and adventure, just don't actually experience it and push their gear to the limits. Perhaps it's just the fact it's in Brentwood, who knows. REI does carry a wide selection of products, but to me an outdoor recreation store is much more than that. It's a community, a meeting place to discuss that hidden waterfall, that east facing cliff that had the most stellar sunrise ascent. The co-op has proven to be beneficial to the wilderness we love and REI's is highly respectable, but I am just not convinced this store lives up to others I've shopped. read more

REI is unbelievably awesome. I used to go to one in Denver, Colorado, and I'm so glad there's one in the Nashville area. After a disappointing experience with a refund at Kohl's (I got 62 cents back for a tie clip my mom bought me that cost $20), I went to REI with some boots that were coming apart. The boots were bought in 2007, and they happily took care of me. Every time I have ever been there, they have always treated me like a valued customer, so I thought I'd take a moment and write a review for them.
