I immediately went straight for the Ghibli Studio stuff in the back of course to see what kind of Totoro items they may have. It's not the biggest and most spacious but very decently sized place. Found two super adorable Totoro insulated lunch bags so of course I've to get them, I mean they're just too cute not to get them anyway. The total rounds up to be close to $38. They accept both credit/debit card and cash as forms of payment. Staff is friendly and fast service since there's never a line. Stuff can get pricey depending on what you wanna buy. However, I think their prices are actually pretty reasonable and way cheaper compared to other websites and Amazon in my most honest opinion. Stumbled upon Reiwatakiya while in the St Marks 'hood, and we decided to check it out. This place has a lot of authentic Japanese goods in the heart of St. Marks where many Japanese goods and food are at. Some of the stuff is somewhat pricey but you can get whitening cream or whitening gel by Kose in this place for $8.00, which is pretty affordable. I bought the gel and it smells really good. It is a faint subtle flowery smell. This place also has a large selection of authentic Japanese makeup and household and personal hygiene products mostly for women to buy. I also bought a mini hello kitty chain which was kind of expensive. It was close to $20 which was too much though. I couldn't resist the urge to get it because it was so fluffy and furry! I love this store. I'm a die hard fan of Sanrio merchandise and it's really hard to find items with the original characters. My all time favorites are Little Twin Stars (LTS), to be followed by My Melody (original, not present day Melody), and Tuxedo Sam (also not the present day looking Sam). Where I live, there aren't any Asian stores that sell cosmetics and novelty items, so my eyes had to take in all the wonder! When I entered the store, I was greeted by one of the employees and was offered a basket while I perused. The store had some unopened boxes on the floor that probably need unpacking, but the rest was pretty orderly and clean. The store is also very well lit, so you can't miss anything. This place definitely gives Miniso a run for their money! I had to to really use some discipline and not buy all the things. I'm the type of person that will always buy something in cute packaging even though I will never use it. In the end, I left with 3 packs of Sanrio stickers (found them strategically placed at the register), LTS packable shopping bag, and an LTS spa head band. I wish I hadn't already overpacked for this trip, otherwise, I would have loaded up on all the merch here. read more

Really cute shop for Japanese beauty and personal care products. Everything is well organized, brightly lit, and clean. Some of the makeup products even have testers available, which was nice for some makeup I was on the fence about. I also love the little paper shopping bag they give you! The pricing is also pretty reasonable for imported items. For the makeup I was looking at, it was at least cheaper than Amazon. Only downside is that there aren't many English translations on the product labels, so it's harder to mindlessly browse without a staff member helping you. ‼Beware of this dishonest business establishment ‼ On Monday, July 31, around 8 pm, I checked out with a few items totaling $104.56. The transaction went through immediately, but I never received the products; the business owner said not until I pay for it "again." The moment the transaction went through with an "approved" notification popping up on my phone, the business owner told me their system was down; they insisted that the transaction didn't go through (despite showing them the proof) and that I must pay for the products "again" in order to hold on to what I had already paid for. When I questioned their request about paying for the products "twice," they told me "I" will need to contact them for a refund if both transactions are successful. They chose not to trust their customers and asked their customers to take all the risks for them and spend all the time/effort for them. I stood there confused, helpless, and traumatized by their actions. Two days later, on August 2, the statement was posted on my account. The transaction went through and I did not have the products. I just spent another 30 minutes on a recorded line with the credit card company to beg for a refund from them. For anyone who's reading this, if you have any other better ideas to report business like this, please contact me! Thank you. I hope there won't be another victim like me. Kosumosu fills the void in NYC for a Japanese beauty store. Unlike the high-end department store experience, this concept focuses on a relatable and easily accessible storefront supplying a plethora of brands at a variety of price points. This type of beauty store is more common in East Asia with chains such as Cosmed or Sasa, and I'm glad that this place opened up in St. Marks! They carry an assortment of Japanese brands I couldn't previously find in NYC such as Shu Uemera, D Program, and Japanese Curel--these are only a few of the many, many brands there. They also carry more internationally common brands like SK-II and Hada Labo. Lotions, essences, creams, face masks, shampoos and conditioners, beauty applicators and tools, eye masks, etc...and importantly they have testers available of many of the products, which I find extremely helpful. read more

This used to be a Shibulaya, which also sold J-beauty products. As far as I can tell, Kosomosu retains a similar ambience, with an automated "Irasshaimase" when you step into the store, and tons of bright, colorful snacks and beauty products. They have everything from shampoo to makeup removers, popular brands to indie brands. This is my new favorite shop in NYC! I'm a huge fan of Japanese beauty products but it's so hard to discover new products online unfortunately. This store solves that! Kosumosu is a brightly lit store with lots and lots and lots of Japanese beauty products. There's everything from body lotion to face masks to fake eyelashes. A few products have some testers for you to try out too! The prices here are pretty reasonable. The stuff that's popular (ie the stuff you can also find on Amazon Prime) is about on par with the Amazon price. But for other stuff, like the Sweet Lychee Body spray I got, it's def cheaper than what I found online. This spray smells just like lychee candy btw, would highly recommend. Also the lady at the cashier seems pretty nice too, she greets all the people that come in with what I assume is a greeting phrase in Japanese? idk tho I don't speak Japanese ‍ Oh and one last thing, most of the writing on the products are in Japanese but the price tag has a small English translation of what the product is. Came here for high end japanese brand, and their price is very competitive compared to other cosmetic stores I've been through. *PLUS even a bit cheaper than online website. They carried POLA, THE GINZA, SHISEIDO and different lines of HADALOBO for skincare. And they have numerous of shampoo and masks to pick from. I had a terrible experience here where a sales associate was helping me choose a product and misled me by showing me the wrong color. Once I bought it and let them know they misled me, they wouldn't let me return it. I was completely lied to and the onus was on them to correct their mistake and they could not.
