After visiting friends in La Porte, we wanted to stop into Garwoods on the way back to Chicago, but they have limited hours during the winter months. So that dashed that plan. We found that Remus Farms was open and on our route home to Chicago, so that is why we stopped. Upon arriving, we saw that they have been open since 1932, and we love to see a business survive for so long. Outside there were huge bins of pumpkins, squash and gourds. It had been extremely cold the week before, so they had all froze. And sadly, now that they were thawed, they were soft and moldy. They should have been tossed instead of left out for customer to see. Inside, there was a huge area of produce, baked goods, jams, jellies, salsas and other farmer's market canned products. In another room, they had evergreen boughs that they were making into wreaths, swags, and grave blankets. Since we visited during December, we assumed that most of the produce came from somewhere else, and was not "farm fresh." But everything looked okay. There was a plentiful array of canned goods, but all of them had a layer of dust, and looked like they had been sitting undisturbed for a long time. Most of products still had a good expiration date, but the dust did not make them look appetizing. If I recall, the retail area has a dirt floor, and that may account for the dust. But they should have their employees use a feather duster to keep the cans clean. There were plenty of baked goods, too--pies, breads, muffins, etc. But a lot of them looked like they had been sitting for awhile, and without an expiration date, they looked suspect. We took a pass. We did find a big, lovely evergreen swag for $20, and we bought a bag full of small gourds that were priced at $1 apiece. We also bought off Remus-branded cherry salsa, and it was really delicious. I cannot comment on the nursery area because most of it was closed for the winter. I applaud Remus for being open for over 90 years, and there are a lot of good things to say about this place, but they would do well to tidy up. I am sure that it would help their business, and make their product more appealing to their customers. read more

absolutely lovely! I adore this market. Their produce is definitely of quality. Everything is organized and easy to find despite the location being huge. Not to mention, the farm is simply adorable. The people are great, kind, and welcoming. I personally purchased many of their fresh produce and genuinely loved it (not to mention the joy of it being affordable and reasonably priced). The blueberries tasted heavenly, so good that I had to purchase their 5 lb box! I will be returning... Leaving this review so that others may also find this excellent market. I'm so glad I did. I don't think I have ever experienced such rude behavior in my life. If you want to make a sell, it's probably not the best choice to look at your customers when they are asking questions and say the words "you two are the most indecisive people I have ever met." And this was only after a few minutes of being there. Not that it would have mattered. And then when saying that we would like to hold off because we would like to do a little more research on the type of tree it was we were met with sighs and dropped shoulders and was asked "what's the problem?? The tree is FINE." An absolute horrible experience and needless to say I am never going there again. I am still in shock by how we were treated. And I'm having go a hard time believing this has never happened to anyone else. read more

I love to go there for vegetables plants & the rose bushes I bought last yr are doing great this yr. so far. This yr I'm going to buy some of my flowers there also. Though it's true the store inside is nasty & way too many stray cats & nasty cat food, but I always get the best banana peppers there & very reasonably priced. read more

Not to be trusted! I called Remus Farms on a Saturday asking if they had any Concord Grapes, and if so I would drive out from Chicago to Indiana to buy some. They woman who answered the phone said that she could see a basket of them from where she was standing. So I made the long drive Sunday morning specifically to buy Concord grapes. When I got there Sunday morning, they had half a basket of grapes sitting there.......... sitting there all molded over and crushed. I asked the man working if they had any non moldy grapes in the back and he said he would look. Took about 15 minutes until he finally took the basket into the back and came back out saying he found some but that was all they had. BUT WHAT HE HAD ACTUALLY DONE WAS TAKEN THE BASKET OF MOLDY CRUSHED GRAPES INTO THE BACK AND HAD ATTEMPTED TO WASH OFF ALL THE MOLD!!! When he brought the basket back out, the grapes were all wet, still crushed and still in the same basket. So in essence they wasted my time and gas money driving all the way from Chicago to Hobart Indiana for a product that was spoiled and should have been thrown away. And then attempted to cheat me. Never again Remus, there is no way you can be trusted, bunch of liars. read more

As a former employee, I could go into so much detail about things I saw there and things I was asked to do. Potatoes that were covered in mouse poop I was told to wash off and put back on display. So many times my paycheck was "delayed" due to "not having enough money", but somehow my former boss made sure her daughter got paid (for doing zilch) so she could go buy alcohol for her parties. When I got fired in March of 2020 (the big start of covid) they couldn't even be honest with me that I was getting fired, they told me I was "laid off"..two days later I go in to pick up my last check and see a completely new guy working in my place. The lack of honesty was ridiculous. When they tried to "bring me back" in August of 2020, I was told that they lied to me because they were "upset at me" for taking time off to be with my mom when she was sick. Absolutely absurd. As far as my experiences there as a customer, my most recent experience was last year around November I believe. I went in to buy birdseed and bacon. I met up with one of the workers I used to work with who was watering plants and chatted with him, and that was really nice. Then met up with Curtis and the head cashier outside at the plant counter and talked to them and they both liked seeing me and were super nice. Then came the kicker, my former boss (the one mentioned above who delayed my checks) came out as I was speaking to them and instead of even saying "hi" to me, she refused to acknowledge me at all and turned her nose to the air and hurried back inside the store. When I came inside to get my bacon and pay at the register, she went and locked herself in her office. No Hi, not even a wave. I gave 7 years of my time, and worked my rear off for that place and that's how you get treated. No honesty about being fired, and 4 years later she can't even make eye contact with me. OMG now on to the selection of flowers, plants, trees etc. They have so so many to choose from that I could browse around here all day. I love it! To much boisterous laughter of his friends, causing her anxiety and fear to go back there. When you meet the man, you'll see why. Gross. I always have a good experience when I go here. The last time I was there was 2 days ago. The produce wasn't as stocked as usual when I go, but I was happy enough with what I got! I'm looking forward to when they get their Honey Crisp apples in! They have them at about half the price of the supermarkets! I load up! They didn't have them yet though so I have to wait. I just got zucchini, melons, and peppers. They also sell gifty things like Amish apple butters and jams. They have a freezer with pierogies. I love the apricot and blueberry ones. I got the Amish butter from there before because I thought it would taste better than regular butter but me nor my family tasted any difference but it was still fine as butter goes. This is a good place with reasonable prices. All of the workers I ever dealt with are so friendly especially the cashiers! I would recommend it to others! read more

I stopped there for the first time wanting to buy some produce. Yes, they have a huge selection and good prices but going toward the back of the store where they sell other food items, it was so dirty there was no way I would buy anything from that area. I also asked if there was a bathroom for customers to use. I was directed to go through the doors into the back of the store and turn left. I thought it was a joke....the single bathroom was the dirtiest bathroom I have ever seen! Flies all over, I didn't even take a step into it, I asked another employee back there where the bathroom was and was told that was it. I actually said "are you serious?" He just walked away and I left the store without a purchase. A port a potty would have been 100% better! read more

This is a great family run farm and is one that I have visited annually with their season opener until the close of season as winter approaches. I have purchased many of my larger 15+ft trees pine trees that are now 25 and 30ft each. Every year I give huge flowering baskets to friends and family as gifts during the growing season and they all absolutely love the large size and plentiful blooms that Remus Farms cultivates leading up to spring. Their flowers, plants and trees are always a far cry better than their competitors or the local hardware store. My only comment is that "Pops" is the All Knowing One which is great accept as a consumer, it makes it difficult to get help from the others. Although helpful, they depend heavily on his knowledge-base and typically defer to him for all questions related to plants and trees. Typically, there is a line of people who need his input. Truly and enjoyable experience every time I walk the greenhouses or see the new shipment of merchandise in the far yard. I am a fan of Remus Farms. read more

I have shopped her many times and bought at least 20 fruit trees that have all done well. They offer a even trade return on any tree that does not survive and I have only had 1 tree that did not make it. They had great advice on the proper planting and care for my fruit trees that made them successful. The prices were actually better than prices on line and the advantage is the trees they have are not dry root. This means the trees are in soil and have a better chance of living. I will now be looking for conifer trees and expect to buy them from Remus farms as well. read more
