10 out 10 experience- we went on Saturday afternoon to pick some strawberries and didn't realize how many festive activities they have outside of the field - apple shooting (my fav), goats, corn playground, obstacle and huge jumping grounds (kids only) and more! Everything is decorated with strawberries as it is the season. To pick berries you need to take a fun tractor ride, once in the field you get a bucket ($17 per bucket despite how much you fill it up so top up!). All strawberries are very sweet - smaller on the size but sweet, we also got few bigger once after a bit of search. They have blueberries as well. Fun place for adults and kids, don't forget a hat and sunscreen.

came here for the first time for blueberries and this place definitely did not disappoint! i'm looking forward to coming back here for their other u-pick and other events! pros: -very very kid friendly!: there are so many activities for the kids that we barely got through everything. so many playhouses, obstacle courses, picture opportunities, trampoline things, train, corn pit, endless and endless play houses.. my kid said it was better than disneyland ( she don't know but i'll take it lol) -plenty of blueberries to pick cons; -concession food was pretty terrible so pack some food. they do NOT allow coolers however -no coolers allowed ( hard for a sunny day) -not enough staff around to just ask questions -portable sinks didn't have soap or paper towels so constantly had to switch over to another station to find them all in all what a great experience and so much to do!

This is an amazing farm with plenty of space to roam and pick some amazing berries. There is a wagon that takes you into your field of choice and then you fill baskets. In the age of Covid, the wagon ride is a little leery. They seem to cram as many people as the can with no regard to social distancing. Just a heads up if that concerns you. Certain associates were not wearing masks, one in particular actually got into the wagon to give directions. This is just a heads up if this is a concern for you. Otherwise, you can spend hours here and have plenty to do and see. I loved the great selection of blueberries and I felt even with the crowds we could distance ourselves and get some really nice picks! The late season strawberries were kind of a miss. Most of the berries were over ripened and mushy. While the berries were huge compared to other farms and I feel we got our money's worth, the quality wasn't the best. I would recommend staying away from fields that are "end of season" Once you get a basket you are committing to buy the basket so it's a quick heads up. All in all, I can definitely see this becoming a summer tradition and I would recommend it if you are comfortable venturing out for some outdoor berry picking adventures!

Super upset that they're lying about admission on the website which states $2 on weekdays only. I've attached a screenshot that explains they charge admission on weekdays only because of overhead blah, blah, blah..... However, I visited on a Saturday and was shocked when I arrived and they were charging admission just for picking vegetables. Welp, there goes an extra $12 out of my wallet that could go toward the high price of produce here. I should have turned completely around and visited a different farm that doesn't charge admission for blistering child labor. I must admit the green peppers, kale and tomatoes were looking good but I just can't get over the admission. 0_0 I would expect to pay admission to a festival but not to stoop and stand in boiling degree weather. I definitely learned my lesson. I was searching for no frills, which was the experience - but I actually paid for bells and whistles which I didn't receive.

Bucket of strawberries - soda can actually makes the bucket look smaller than it really is

First time visiting here and went with the intentions to get there early to pick the strawberries being the first day of the first weekend for picking in the fields. A few things that stood out - * Every single staff member working were friendly & kind & happy * The grounds are gorgeous with beautiful plantings - lots of seating placed around * general admittance which includes most activities (train & something else excluded) is well worth the $10 - there's a higher tier pricing too * you pick is $15 per bucket (provided) and the strawberries were loaded on the plants - many were huge and they smell like strawberries (ever purchase strawberries in a grocery store to bring them home and they don't smell or taste like anything?). * picking is organized and staff helps assign people to rows so it's not a free for all * activities for the kiddos - so many to explore and lots of fun

Dishonest business - Buyer beware! We have been coming to Johnson's for years to pick watermelons, buy flowers and veggies. Never again. Yesterday was their watermelon fest. We arrived around 2pm and asked the cashier at the admission booth if there were any watermelons to pick. She said that plenty of red watermelons left but not too many yellow. Paid $10/person admission and when we arrived at the field we were told that they have been picked out of watermelons since the morning, but we could try looking for any left. Looked through the field for 30 min. Only a few tiny watermelons left (5-10 inches in diameter). Took a few to bring to the front desk to complain. When we arrived at the check out on the field we were told that because we "picked" these tiny watermelons we had to pay full price for them - $4/each! We complained that we were misled when told at the ticket booth that there were watermelons on the field, but no one cared - arguing that "there were signs everywhere saying if you picked something, you had to pay." Because we are honest - we paid for these tiny watermelons even though we brought them to the check out booth to complain only. After the incident- posted on Johnson's Instagram page where they advertised their Watermelon Fest so actively. In the Instagram comment we said that their fest had no watermelons and there should've been a post on their social media warning customers who had to drive 1 hour each way to their farm. Instead of addressing the complaint- Johnson's deleted our Instagram post! What a shady and dishonest business- not coming back. Buyer beware! Here are pictures of not only tiny but green inside watermelons Johnson's is selling $4/each...

Example of a proper Credit Card Receipt (Lowe's)

June 2022 - We spent $150 in the last two days on flowers and potting soil. The selection is very good but to my great surprise they have no idea how create a proper credit card receipt. See picture below. This is business 101. I use several different credit cards and without a proper receipt it is difficult to keep proper books.

Good place to send your summer outside. Love the place. They just started the strawberry season and perfect for picking. We went there to try it out and we enjoyed it. The experience is great. Would definitely comeback coz they have so many kinds of fruit in the farm.

This place is so fun! We came for Raspberry/Watermelon Fest and there was so much for the kids to do. Next year we are going to buy the season pass. There are bounce houses, trains, fruit cannons, obstacle courses, go karts, fruit picking, the list goes on. The staff is also so nice! Everyone we ran into was so friendly and hospitable. We loved picking fruit and veggies out in the field too and the prices are reasonable. They have an adorable shop up front too if you don't want to pick your own or are looking for cute decor. We will be back for pumpkins soon!

When we got there, the line to get in was very daunting and we didn't think there would be any strawberries left. But it went by pretty fast considering how much people there were! $8 admission and 13 bucks for a bucket. All worth it for the sweet and juicy berries. One piece of advice: set an age minimum for u-pick because seeing all these little brats running all over the berries made me die inside a little

It's about 45 minute drive from Chicago depending where you are located at . Coming from south loop it's 45 minutes but if you are in the suburbs it may or may not be further away. Parking is super easy and on site and plenty of spaces to park at. They offer different deals depending on what activities interest your liking. We chose to do the one that includes everything for $15 dollars . Not a bad deal at all. However here is the catch, you do pay for what you pick separately if you choose to pick any vegetables, flowers, or fruit. Either way the prices are not bad at check out but I do suggest to bring your own box or bag if you plan on picking . They do offer cardboard box at but you do pay for that as well. Besides the Upick this place offers a lot of other fun activities and even get to pet some goats . A fun half or full day of adventure. Some things to bring along your fun adventure highly recommend, camera, hat , sunglasses , water bottle, and a bag if you plan on picking . Check !

After visiting friends in La Porte, we wanted to stop into Garwoods on the way back to Chicago, but…read morethey have limited hours during the winter months. So that dashed that plan. We found that Remus Farms was open and on our route home to Chicago, so that is why we stopped. Upon arriving, we saw that they have been open since 1932, and we love to see a business survive for so long. Outside there were huge bins of pumpkins, squash and gourds. It had been extremely cold the week before, so they had all froze. And sadly, now that they were thawed, they were soft and moldy. They should have been tossed instead of left out for customer to see. Inside, there was a huge area of produce, baked goods, jams, jellies, salsas and other farmer's market canned products. In another room, they had evergreen boughs that they were making into wreaths, swags, and grave blankets. Since we visited during December, we assumed that most of the produce came from somewhere else, and was not "farm fresh." But everything looked okay. There was a plentiful array of canned goods, but all of them had a layer of dust, and looked like they had been sitting undisturbed for a long time. Most of products still had a good expiration date, but the dust did not make them look appetizing. If I recall, the retail area has a dirt floor, and that may account for the dust. But they should have their employees use a feather duster to keep the cans clean. There were plenty of baked goods, too--pies, breads, muffins, etc. But a lot of them looked like they had been sitting for awhile, and without an expiration date, they looked suspect. We took a pass. We did find a big, lovely evergreen swag for $20, and we bought a bag full of small gourds that were priced at $1 apiece. We also bought off Remus-branded cherry salsa, and it was really delicious. I cannot comment on the nursery area because most of it was closed for the winter. I applaud Remus for being open for over 90 years, and there are a lot of good things to say about this place, but they would do well to tidy up. I am sure that it would help their business, and make their product more appealing to their customers.

Not to mention, the farm is simply adorable. The people are great, kind, and welcoming. I personally purchased many of their fresh produce and genuinely loved it (not to mention the joy of it being affordable and reasonably priced). After a short tractor ride to the fields, we started with the raspberries and were able to fill our container in about 20 minutes. We then moved on to the strawberry fields. After spending an hour and a half in blistering heat, I was only able to fill about one-quarter of the container because there were virtually no strawberries available. Everyone picking alongside us seemed equally disappointed and frustrated that containers were being sold despite the lack of fruit in the fields. What made the experience even more frustrating was the no-refund policy, which meant we were out the money regardless of the poor conditions. I understand that crop availability can vary, but customers should be informed when fields are nearly picked over or offered a refund or alternative. Unfortunately, this experience was extremely disappointing, and I would not recommend this place to others.

Full disclosure: I know next to nothing about farming co-ops or community-supported agriculture. It…read morewas only recently that we made our first foray into the world of CSA. So, take all of this with a grain of salt since I'm a total noob at this. Through Creme de la Crop though, I experienced my initiation. The way that it works is at the beginning of the season (in our case late spring) you enroll into the share program signing up for either a Standard Market - selection of basic farm produce - or "Epicurean" - larger amounts of every fruit and vegetable they grow. Paying a flat fee (2014 Standard full $720/half $360) you then weekly receive their finest summer produce for 18 weeks. Simply pick up your weekly take of assorted veggies at one of the designated locations. Easy peasy. The upside: The quality of the produce was crazy good. This wasn't your standard supermarket fare--not by a long shot. Everything we received over the 18 weeks was organic, grown on their farm, and from taste, touch, sight, and smell absolutely phenomenal. Green beans, peppers, lettuce, carrots, eggplant, cucumbers as well as various herbs...and much more. We were rarely disappointed with what we got. The people and actual farm were also part of the experience. Most of their produce is grown right there along US 30 just west of town. The actual farm leaves little to be desired. It's basically a collection of rundown old buildings and a few muddy fields. But, the staff and volunteers running it are amazing. They manage to create a unique atmosphere of education and community that really draws you in. They are helpful, friendly, and passionate about their work. The downside: As much as it pains me to say it, it just isn't practical or economical. First off, what produce you get any given week depends entirely on what they are harvesting. One week you get crap load of beets and then next you're swimming in beans. If there are veggies you eat regularly, you'll probably find yourself looking elsewhere many weeks. You also frequently are trying to figure out creative ways to use up the unique produce you end up with. Edemame, chard, kale are interesting, just not the most useful. Second, it's expensive. Some may argue that the quality as well as the environmental sustainability are worth the extra cost, but it was hard for me to swallow. There are other ways to procure organic produce without overly burdening the budget. Finally, there's also the convenience factor to consider. Creme de la Crop does a lot to make it easy to get your hands on your weekly allotment with multiple pick-up locations around Valpo. But, you still work around their schedule and accessibility. In the end it's worth it if you're really committed to CSA. Having principles costs money. If you're willing to pay the cost, a CSA is an excellent way to get great fruits and vegetables and support environmentally sustainable agriculture. If not, find yourself a Whole Foods somewhere.
