This is a very nice older but remodeled hotel in downtown Albany. It is a quick drive from the airport and was more fun than staying at an airport hotel. When you get to the airport call the hotel and have the shuttle come pick you up. It is comfortable and free and runs from 7am to 11pm. Definitely this was a good perk. The hotel has a nice old wood paneled lobby that has some questionable updates. Is ok though and they have fruit water on tap. Elevators were quick. The room was nice, a reasonably good size with a comfy bed and a large bathroom. It was great. You can go and walk around the neighborhood and see the state Capitol, county and city buildings, and many restaurants and food trucks. The surrounding buildings are a mix of the best 1880s and 1960s architecture. When it is time to leave go to the lobby and take the shuttle back to the airport. I booked this hotel with Marriott points and I thought it was very reasonable for the quality. I don't know the cash value. read more

The Renaissance Albany Hotel was a really nice stay for an overnight trip. The room was large and spacious, and I had a great view overlooking the Capitol building. The climate controls in the room also worked exceptionally well, which made for a great night of sleep. Parking was quite easy too. The hotel garage is convenient, and I liked that you can basically "pay" for parking with your room key during checkout, then just drop the keys in the box at the garage exit on your way out. Very smooth process! The location is excellent as well -- just a couple blocks from the government buildings and right in the middle of downtown Albany. Overall, a very comfortable and convenient hotel experience. I'd definitely stay here again. read more

I do enjoy the Renaissance-branded hotels through Marriott Bonvoy. And the one in downtown Albany is a good one. Close to the State Capital, Albany Capital Center, the sports arena as in walking distance, it's a good hotel to stay for a couple of nights with comfortable beds, lots of space, a solid restaurant and bar in the Wellington, and a stylish lobby. For restaurants and bars near by, outside of the Beer Hall down the street, you will need to walk approximately 10 to 15 minutes if you want to access some of the more known local spots like Dove & Deer or Jack's Oyster House. In addition to the spacious rooms with closet space, drawers, good lighting, and large bathrooms, the hotel offers shuttle service to the airport or other local points within reason. The staff were friendly and helpful, providing updates on when to expect the shuttle to take me to the airport. Overall I was pleased. read more

Beautiful old hotel and design, easy parking, clean rooms Stayed at the Renaissance Albany for a few days for a college trip and enjoyed the stay. Two major pluses are the easy parking and proximity to the Capitol. The classic and beautiful design is worth a stay all on its own, bumping up the review a half-point. The rooms are a bit of a contrast in being so modern, but not a bad thing. Service was fine-- we waited at an empty desk for a bit and staff didn't engage unless we asked to check in, for suggestions on restaurants and things to see, and check out. Things to see and places to eat at are limited close by. Ease in having the Marriott Bonvoy app if you're enrolled. The hotel restaurant is called Wellington's. Service and food are good, and fine for breakfast, but the furniture and space are run down and getting to a state of disrepair. That's a separate review and not this. read more

Room for immense improvement: Housekeeping - So many obvious spots and stains in the room and restroom that could have been easily cleaned with a wet wipe. No hand soap or shampoo in the freshly turned over room. I understand if things run out during my stay and housekeeping can replenish during the stay. But I found the shampoo empty at check in and no hand soap. Lack of microwave in the room: people with food allergies or sensitivities who don't find safe food options easily or people with medical conditions that need to eat at certain times should have the option to warm up something and have it in their rooms. read more

Nice stay near the capitol building. The Renaissance always offers a fun stay within walking distance of many things. Check in was fast and easy. I enjoy the Marriott app to make customizations when needed. My only complaint and I can live without it is that I didn't get my complimentary water, my room wasn't cleaned after my first night - just needed some additional amenities such as coffee and creamer. My room wasn't stocked so my options were decaf coffee or extra dark. Rooms and view are beautiful. read more

Stayed one night at the Renaissance for a friend's baby shower at the nearby State Room. We originally booked the Fairfield Inn, but switched to this after realizing that the hotel was undergoing reservation and that the cost difference was just $75, so it was effectively minimal between the 2 of us. It's located somewhat conveniently adjacent to the highway, but also very close to State St and the nearby Pearl St, where there seems to be more going on anyways. SUNY Albany is literally within sight of the hotel as you exit. Due to the absolute short time we were here, we didn't bother with venturing to Wellington's or the hotel gym or any of that. There's a water refilling station next to Wellington's which came to good use. The king bed room itself was quite spacious from what I thought. It has that interesting design where the TV is atop a 1/2 wall cabinet of sorts with a chair for a desk like environment. To the right was a sofa and to the left was a king size bed. Outlets were also properly placed here and easy to reach. The bathroom was also pretty clean and the shower was solid, even though the shower head maybe could use an upgrade. We had an ironing board, but the iron seemed a bit dated. We were on the 5th floor. We heard some noise here and there, but nothing to truly bother us. Overall, I thought they did a good job remodeling the rooms, while also ensuring some of the interior architecture was preserved. read more

I selected to stay here after the good reviews I saw online. I was in town for a wedding and wanted to make sure I felt comfortable. The front desk staff were helpful when I needed some water and the the dispenser was not out yet in the lobby. The hotel has coffee in the lobby if you need some caffeine to get your day started also. My room was clean, spacious and the bed was comfortable. I also enjoyed the fact the doors lock after a certain time at night and your card is needed to get back in. I'd come back here again if I need a stay. read more

Check in: efficient check in on a recent Friday evening; asked for a room upgrade based on my status and clerk responded that my room was already upgraded. Room (1116): Lighting is an issue at this hotel. The entryway was dimly lit, and throughout the room lighting was woefully inadequate. Large open concept room, at least 450 sq feet. Smaller LG TV, mini-refrigerator, Keurig coffee maker, all the normal items. Bed: Mediocre mattress-only bed. Average linens. Cleanliness of room: average; found hair on the furniture and the nightstands were not clean. Noise/sleep quality: No noise between rooms during our stay, but street noise came into the room and woke us up during the night. The windows really don't insulate the street noise. Service: in general employees were adequate. Twice during our brief stay we went to the front desk and had to wait a few minutes before anyone arrived to assist. Restaurant: On-site full service restaurant called "Wellingtons." Parking: $17/day in the garage attached to the hotel. No valet service. Club: If you have status, there's a club. On the weekends it's closed, but we were able to access it to get some bottled water. Misc: This is a downtown hotel and there are restaurants within walking distance. This hotel is in downtown Albany. It is in a great location to the Capitol, literally across the street and many attractions within walking distance. Arrival: We arrive in the evening around 7pm. The hotel can be a challenge to find and then trying to find the entry is yet another challenge in the dark. There was no door man or any people at the hotel front entry, but as soon as you enter, you are in the lobby, relatively small lobby and employees are standing behind interesting shaped counter for hotel check-in. Employees are friendly. Room: 1116 is a nice spacious room with a TV stand separating bedroom from the living room. The room is very dark. I turned on all the lights and it was just too dark. If the living room and the bedroom had some overhead lighting it would help. Notice the darkness for the coffee pod picture. That is how dark the front part of the room is with all the lights on and the blinds open in the room. The cleanliness was okay. I would not recommend walking barefoot. I did wipe down all surfaces because there was either hair or dirt on the bed side tables. Bed: No box spring, just a mattress which made this bed lower to the ground. It was comfortable, but not as luxurious. The bed linens were clean. Pillows were sort of on the flat side, double up to get the height of one willow. The sleep quality is okay. While you cannot hear noise between rooms, you can hear street noise. We were here Friday night and I was able to hear a few cars, cannot imagine what a midweek stay would be like. Bathroom: The bathroom was dark too but good Aveda products. The towels were thin and showing wear but clean. Applying makeup can be a challenge. I did open up all the blinds to bring natural light into the room. Room Amenities: The coffee pods provided in the rooms was the best Keurig coffee that I ever had. Bold rich and full of flavor. Parking: onsite to the side of the hotel. I recommend parking in the garage versus the street or another lot. It is convenient to park. Onsite restaurant: Wellington where we had breakfast. It was fabulous! If you can do a delicious breakfast, I am sure dinner is great too. Offsite restaurant: The City Beer Hall is right down the street. PROS We stayed here for a couple of nights recently. Booked deluxe king and it was a nice size room. Comfortable bed. Upon request we had enough pods for the coffee maker. We got breakfast from the restaurant and it was a bit starch heavy (hash) but generously portioned. Free parking around the corner. Situated next to a park. Plenty of stuff to do with kids in the area. The lobby is nice. That's the only part of the hotel we saw. The restaurant / lounge didn't seem to be very busy but breakfast was good and FAST. You can't order it ahead you have to place the order the morning of but they are speedy. CONS We are loyalty club members but we did not get an upgrade. The front desk staff seemed a bit checked out. At any rate they are very unobtrusive. The blackout curtains are poorly fitted so not a perfect blackout and that is always a huge disappointment. The cleaning staff barely spoke English to the point where we asked for extra coffee pods and they brought us cups. There were some areas in the room that were excessively filthy. Notably the sliding glass doors to the shower are very difficult to keep clean and they have gotten disgusting. A few other details caught my attention but I didn't go around photographing them.... Overall I would say at a glance everything in the room looks fine. It's once you've been in there for a couple days and spent time in it you might notice this and that. AND HERE IS MY MAIN GRIPE: Also in that same vein I left a specialty charger in the room and it was not turned in. Value $65. I called multiple times only to finally realize that I was never going to be getting it back. Managers need to enforce with staff for guests' belongings to be turned in for safeguarding. read more

I've stayed at this Renaissance two times now and have had nice experiences! It's located in the heart of downtown Albany with views of the capitol from many rooms. On my most recent visit, I received a complimentary upgrade for being a Bonvoy member. My room felt super large with more than enough space to hang, work, sleep, and refresh. The bed was super comfy with soft sheets, I especially enjoyed the Aveda toiletries, complimentary water bottles, and TV that flips around. There is a restaurant on the main floor where I did have breakfast the first time I came and it was good. Room service is also available until 11:00 pm. I checked out the gym on the lower level this time and it had everything you may need to get in a good workout. The machines felt modern and it was clean. I opted to park in the garage which is $17 per night and you use your room key to get in and out. It's connected to the hotel, so you don't have to walk outside which is great if the weather is bad. The staff is welcoming and friendly, so overall, I really can't complain! I would continue to stay here if I need a hotel in the area and would recommend it to others. read more

Ah, this hotel is beautiful! The location is great since it's across the street from the capitol building. There's a lot of bars and restaurants just a block over so everything is in walking distance. City Beer Hall is really close too, which I loved. I love the decor inside with the paintings of the presidents and the egg art by the elevators. I'm still unsure what the egg is about since there's a building like that too. The room itself was big and I had a room of the capital. There was a couch and TV across a huge bed. The room was so much bigger than I imagined and it reminded me of a suite I had at the Wyndham in Stuttgart, Germany. Of course there's a coffee machine and all that normal stuff. This hotel even had a fridge so that was a plus. Overall great hotel! read more

It was a little pricey and kind of gross. The good things: my flight was delayed and I got in around 2am. I was met with a friendly greeting. I found that ALL of my encounters with the front-desk team were great. The not so good things - 1) The bedside table was hairy and dusty. I got in, unpacked, and just wanted to go to sleep. The bedside table had all kinds of hair and caked dust. 2) More ick: The alarm clock looked like it had been sprinkled with dust, so who knows how long anyone had touched it. 3) The towels are fraying. This isn't a luxury brand at all. I had better towels at the Hilton Garden Inn in Boise Idaho just a few days ago. 4) The carafe of coffee they sent had a broken spout. No, I'm not putting my hand on it, but it's just not representative of the upscale brand that the Renaissance tries to uphold. 5) They replaced shampoo and conditioner, but left the crushed, empty bottle of body lotion where it was. (It was almost empty when I used it. I left it on the counter so they'd see it. They worked around it!) Overall, this is a super disappointing stay. The front desk is wonderful. The bed is fine, but there's nothing special about its comfort (in fact, the box frame makes it uncomfortable to get out of). This room isn't designed fro travelers. ALL of the plugs on the desk are on the underside of the desk, so in order to plug in my computer, I have to get down on the floor. Nope, I don't need to come back here. The people are nice, but they don't - as a whole - understand that weary travelers come to stay. Guests want to feel taken care of (especially at these prices), but there's such a lack of attention to detail and follow through, it's simply sadly disappointing. read more

At check-in, I was greeted by a friendly smile and was happy to find out I got an upgrade. This hotel has a nice concierge lounge for Platinum elite and higher. I got to my room, which was amazing! I love the industrial look + modern vibe. This hotel and my room were amazing. I looked out my windows to find an amazing view of the Capitol building. I continued to explore my room, next stop being the bathroom. This hotel uses Aveda products! Sooo fancy! This hotel has so much to offer from location to amazing restaurants (Wellington's). After attending an annual Christmas Eve Eve Party hosted by a pair of Albany friends, I took advantage of an invitation to crash at the Renaissance Albany with another friend from the party instead of Ubering back to Schenectady (spoiler alert: nothing happened / we're just friends!) Said friend is currently a Bostonian, who clearly has a thing for a Capital cities, swapping his Albany Center Square digs for baked beans and Fenway Park, but made the pilgrimage back to Albs to attend this epic holiday shindig, and I'm so glad he did! So while it wasn't a love-at-first-sight, let's book a penthouse suite at the Renaissance Albany to celebrate kinda night, it was a memorable reunion nonetheless. Sure, getting some sound sleep in a super comfy California king after a holiday party is up there on my list of essentials, but waking up to the view we had was an early Christmas gift, and would cure any hangover (before brunch at Iron Gate, duh). I'm talking sun blazing, blue, not a cloud in the sky kind of morning, with the rising sun soaking the New York State Capitol in a golden glow. To quote cousin Eddie, She's a beaut, Clark. They say you should really be a tourist in your own city, and I'd have to agree! It was an interesting mix of and older building with modern decor/ furnishings. We both found the room itself a little dark. I wish there was a little more functional light in the space. This hotel was unbelievable on so many levels. I felt like I was royalty while staying here. Every staff member I encountered went above any beyond. Jason at the front desk personally walked me to the parking garage so I wouldn't get lost. When I asked if there was a wine store nearby so I could purchase a bottle for a dinner party, the concierge asked if I wanted a ride there to save me some time. The bartenders were really lovely to talk to, as I was traveling alone for a business conference and enjoyed their conversation. The room was HUGE - in looking at some other Yelpers photos, I feel like maybe my room was larger because of its location in the hallway (right off the elevator, first in the hall) and it was not adjacent to another room. The bed was incredibly comfortable and I had a beautiful view of the capitol building. The bathroom was larger than my sister's studio apartment and had Aveda products, which I LOVE. Overall the room was stunning - usually hotels are cookie-cutter, predictable, and cramped. This room had its own little living room space and a TV that could pivot so you could see it from either the couch or the bed. The bar: During the week in lieu of happy hour prices, the bartenders create a special drink (different each night) to serve to guests for free. They're small, but super tasty and unique (I snuck a peek at the week's offerings). The drink I had that night featured a local distillery's whiskey, and some pears that had been charred on the grill. I also dined here twice - the brussels sprouts were AMAZING, as was the papaya salad. The bar is tastefully decorated and even has outlets underneath the bar if you need to charge your phone haha. Seriously, this hotel is a MUST. My conference was across the street at the Hilton, but I refused to stay there a third year in a row after their air-conditioning issues EVERY SUMMER. Yes, the Renaissance is a little more pricey, but it's SO worth it and you feel like you are a celebrity in the middle of downtown Albany. Bite the bullet and stay here. read more

Great hotel. I loved the location, right downtown. The hotel space and room was beautiful. Clean and well done. Parking was convenient too. The staff was terrific too. I didn't catch the name of the gentleman that checked us in (wears a hat, has a beard, and looks like the myth busters guy). He went above and beyond helping us and anticipating our needs. This guy needs a raise! Hard to find people in the service industry like him. My only complaint is that we stayed during a heatwave (90+F outside) and the AC is set to only work when it sees movement in the room. Therefore, I woke up to an 80F room. A motion detector for the AC is a dumb idea when you're sleeping. The most important thing for a hotel is to get a good nights sleep. This temperature did impact my sleep. read more

Checked into the Renaissance Albany for 5 nights for my son's NY Bar exam. Katelyn checked us in around 10PM and was so nice. Warm greeting and a warm personality. Reina at the front desk was helpful though out our stay with directions and other information. We had two rooms and each was spacious and quiet (even though mine was next to the elevator). We had access to the club level and found the breakfast served to be good. Scrambled eggs, bacon or sausage (depending on the day), oatmeal with the fixings, fresh fruit, pastries, and a selection of breads. Dinner served at the club level was just OK. Each night was a different selection - chicken wings, pizza, taco night, selection of cheeses and side dishes. Desert placed out at around 8PM was ok, not great. Daniel and Joseph who ran the service in the club were very nice and accommodating. I elected to opt out of room service and got an extra 500 points each night. The hotel is in a good location, across the street from the Capitol and about one block away to the entrance of Empire Plaza. The hotel gym was really good for a hotel gym. Seemed like new equipment for almost every body part and free weights up to 50lbs. Overall a very nice place to stay and I would stay here again if I every come back to Albany. P.S. for anyone going to take the NY Bar in Albany the hotel has a direct connection to one site and within a 3 minute walk to the other site (during the July 19 test exam). read more

I stayed here from Friday-Sunday for a trip up to Albany to visit family and show my Fiancé where I grew up. I generally stay at the Hilton Downtown Albany but was curious about the Renaissance as the architecture and history of the building looked alluring. From the time we stepped into the main lobby we were taken back by the beauty of the building and decor. There is an old classy look blended brilliantly with a modern flare. The room was excellent. Bright, clean, and large, with a thoughtful decor. Service was good without the annoying over-the-top hospitality. Wellington's, which is connected to the main lobby is an excellent place for cocktails and to hang out in the evening. Lively but classy. Parking is additional as the garage is around the corner. That would be my only con is that they do charge for parking (I believe it was $17 a day). I enjoyed my stay and felt recuperated in the morning. It was the perfect spot for us to have fun and as a home-base for our Albany adventures. I'm pretty sure I'll be staying here next trip (sorry Hilton). read more

Loooooove this hotel! Got the scoop on this place from my sophisticated BFF, Nicole E. Arriving via Amtrak, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that this downtown gem also included a complimentary shuttle to and from the airport and train station! If you need a taxi, they call up Henry, who is reliable and will schedule return trips. This renovated historical building was a sight for sore eyes after a long early morning travel. The details and art in this space are just incredible, and the view of the Capitol reminds you that you are in the heart of Albany. My room was not ready, so I ended up having to change for my conference in one of the public restrooms. Delightfully, there are a ton of individual ones near Wellington's, the hotel restaurant. Pick any one of these, and you will learn that each one is decorated completely unique from the rest. Shamelessly, I opened up each one to check it out. The most intricate of all is the accessible bathroom, with victorian detailing and a creepy portrait staring at you while you wash your hands. I ate at Wellingtons for breakfast and dinner with a group of friends. It's a swanky experience, with trendy menu specials and an excellent cheese plate. I loved the apple pancakes and eggs benedict in the morning for breakfast, and they accomodated my early morning schedule with oatmeal to-go, as well. My room was suuuuiitte! Pun intended. Soft grey and lavender, with silver accents dreamily dotted the room. I paid for a standard room, but it seemed like I got an upgrade with the separate living area and humongous bathroom. We stayed here yesterday and we really Didn't know what to expect. From the photos it looked great but you never know . We were very happy with our stay. The room was amazing . It was fresh and clean and so updated. The bed was extremely comfortable and just the whole vibe of the room was great. Stayed here for a Thursday-Sunday trip to visit family. I really like the Marriott brand as I generally have positive experiences and intentionally seek out Marriott branded hotels in my travel. Renaissance Albany Hotel is aesthetically nice and in a good location downtown but the service was unsatisfactory. Shout out to Tee-Tee for a warm and pleasant check-in process. The rooms are alright. Fairly clean. Lots of natural light. The beds aren't very comfortable. The box frame makes it a pain to get in and out of. You'll hurt yourself if not careful. My shower door wouldn't stay closed so I had to be really careful with showering or risk the floor getting soaked. The hotel lost power for about 5 hours one morning (9/16). I showered in the dark at 5am which is an inconvenience at best and a safety hazard at worst. I missed an important early morning overseas virtual meeting. Had to walk to a nearby Hilton property, pay for breakfast to sit and use their electricity and Wi-Fi in their restaurant. The Director of Operations and General Manager both demonstrated a "sorry but it's out of our control so just deal with it" attitude which was disappointing. To quote the Director of Operations, "It was like an act of God." This is commonly what hospitality and airline corporations like to say when they don't want to take responsibility for the experiences of their paying customers. The management here didn't offer any type of service recovery or offer to improve the experience of their guests. To be a Silver Elite loyalty member who is intentionally choosing Marriott properties for the purpose of reaching Gold Elite this year, and to pay $200+/night for a room including it's amenities but be without those amenities for a period of time makes the value of that room decrease...and yet...they did nothing. I've also never stayed at a Marriott property or any other hotel where they didn't provide complimentary self-serve coffee in the morning. Yes. You.Have.To.Pay.For.The.Coffee!! Even after having to go to another hotel on that Friday, pay for breakfast so that I can use Wi-Fi and to charge my devices, I get back to the Renaissance Albany (after the power had been restored) and ask for a cup of coffee to take to my room and the Director of Operations takes my room number to make sure he charges me for the darn cup of coffee. Unbelievable! Wait, there's more. So after the power outage, my TV nor my climate control worked in my room. I also didn't have hot water - just luke warm. Maintenance came up right away and fixed the AC. Thankfully. He disassembled the dresser the TV is mounted on so that he could attempt to fix it. He said he'd be back with someone to help him figure it out but he never came back. I was without a working TV service the entire day and a dresser drawer left on the floor. He said the hot water would take a while. I didn't get hot water until Sunday - the morning I checked out. Great service can truly make even unfortunate and seemingly uncontrollable situations seem not so bad. It would have been nice for management to proactively offer something small for the inconvenience (e.g. free coffee) or at the very least show a bit of empathy and acknowledgement for the experience. I plan to visit Albany many more times in the near future but will not stay at this hotel. read more

As we re-open from COVID, this hotel needs to get there front-of-house in order. Our restaurant experiences - we had two meals there - were good. Service, food quality, etc. But 1. hotel staff seems to hide out in the office instead of staffing the front desk. It was weird. It was also remarkable that of the three staff I encountered at the front desk over two days 2. only one person ever smiled or apologized for anything. It was weird. Maybe they don't like their job? In sum, for a national chain it overall was a shocking lack of hospitality at the front desk. read more

Beautiful hotel with lovely large rooms. Bar is open all day and has walls of windows overlooking the beautiful state capital building with comfy chairs along the windows. Great place to people watch, especially when the legislative body is in session (January through June). Good restaurant that is open all day, and several good restaurants nearby including Jack's Oyster House. read more

Loved this Hotel. The rooms are very clean and very chic. The natural light and views are incredible ! The room service was prompt and food outstanding! It offered a restaurant called Wellingtons. The food was incredible! After devastating news about my daughter's wedding venue being closed I ran to the Renaissance to see if they could host the Wedding ! The general manager told me to come down to see her. Leola was marvelous ! Well yes, in less then 10 days we had a beautiful wedding ! The wait staff and bartender were the best ! I can't brag enough about the food, atmosphere and the prettiest ballroom. It was better then I imagined ! A few hiccups but Leola handled it for me ! Beautiful new hotel. Modern interior, cozy inviting lobby, restaurant/bar, mostly friendly staff, great rooms. Food was good (friends of ours didn't have the same experience but we went for the "comfort" foods which were all great). LOVE the walkway connecting to the Union Times Center-what a fabulous thing! Wouldn't stay anywhere else in Albany. So convenient!! So changing from a 5 to a 4-they don't have cots!!! What hotel doesn't have cots?? read more

Stayed here for the first time. Room was quiet. Could not hear street traffic at all. There was a busted old frayed towel in the room so we asked for another one. The front desk clerk said they were sending someone up. 20 mins later and noone came. We went downstairs to ask for a towel and the clerk said someone should have sent it up. He went downstairs to get one. Noone ever came to deliver it. No place to eat within walking distance if you want to get a late night bite. Homeless man was pissing at the corner. read more
