Lovely historic home and a gracious host with an eclectic taste in art and furnishings which means there is something beautiful to look at everywhere. Great location a minute from downtown Troy. Breakfast was delicious and not "overdone" like some B&Bs. Our room was great and bed very comfortable and good shower pressure for an old home. We did not mind the sound of cars on the road in front of the home, but if you're sensitive to that maybe get a room in the back. Highly recommended place in a great area of NY. read more

I have to start this review off shouting out John. What an amazing, thoughtful, and warm individual. As the other reviews have shown, he is incredibly inviting and hospitable. He was readily available through text and phone to help us navigate upstate NY and accommodate any needs that we had. My fiancée has a number of food allergies and intolerances, and he was flexible with our breakfast. We still talk about how fluffy and delicious his omelet was. It has ruined any eggs I could make. He also invited us to share a glass of wine with his two friends that were visiting that day. It felt like we were friends within hours of meeting him. We were the only ones staying in the B&B for the weekday. Due to a problem with a toilet seat, we were transitioned to another room, which was great. It did face the road, which occasionally adds some road noise if you are a particularly sensitive sleeper, but it is fairly minimal. John blends his unique sense of style with the historic nature of the home. Absolutely we would come back to the Gardner Inn, for John, for the omelet, for his greyhounds (Margaret and Nigel), and for the hospitality. read more

Just got back from our second stay within 8 months, so that tells you everything already! The Gardner Farm Inn is a magical place. It is an absolutely stunning home carefully curated with an incredible mix of fine antiques and vintage kitsch. It's perfect. You can spend hours poring over the house and roaming and still not notice everything. It's nearly a living being on its own. John is an impeccable host. He is a joy to be around. He is so friendly and fun and his love for his home and sharing it with his guests is truly special. We've stayed in both the Jean Harlow & John Waters rooms. Both very different experiences and both were perfect. Staying with John doesn't feel transactional at ALL. It truly feels like you're staying with an old friend, a brother, or an uncle. You feel welcomed and cared for and relaxed. And you will fall in love with John's greyhounds - Margaret & Nigel. Both dogs are such loving and calming presences. And the breakfasts are incredible! My husband and I had first been to this establishment in December 2016 and loved it. When we were planning our Valentine's getaway 2022, I was so excited to see this place survived COVID-19. The Gardner Farm Inn was the deciding factor for us to go to the Troy, NY area this year. We stayed in the John Waters room for our most recent visit. I have attached some pictures from this quirky space. Being in the room made me not want to leave. The Inn's owner John is attentive (without being overbearing) and kind. What a great place! Let's just start there. This place is worthy of a novel, so a novel you shall get. But if you don't read the rest, just come stay with John at his lovely B&B. John welcomed us as we exited our car, and welcomed us into the inn, which is a gorgeous colonial style house which has been decorated with wonderful, whimsical, and fun décor, none of which felt so precious as to be scary to sit on, or use, but was very pretty, and interesting, and invited you to really look around. John himself is a lovely person, kind, caring, and delightful. His two greyhound dogs could not be more lovely, Margaret spent some time getting pets and being a sweet pooch, which for dog lovers could not be better. Our room was lovely with a queen size bed which was shockingly comfortable, some chairs to sit in, and some great art-deco furniture. The bathroom was modern feeling with a vintage feel, a clawfoot tub, and a huge shower. The water was super hot, and the water pressure in the shower and tub were great. John made some recommendations for dinner in the area. We followed his suggestion of Nighthawks which was really nice. Breakfast was great. John had asked us about coffee or tea the night before, so he knew our preference. He sat us away from a larger group in the dining room (covid), and delivered coffee and tea, then a great little yogurt/fruit parfait with delicious fruit. The main course was a vegetable/cheese frittata which was perfectly cooked, fluffy and creamy/cheesy with delish veggies inside. Breakfast included a huge slice of the BEST tomato I've eaten in years, and in early spring. So clearly John has some connection to a wizard of tomato growing. Suffice to say, Gardner Farm Inn is lovely, and John and his people are lovely, and if you're in Troy or nearby go stay there. read more

Gardner Farm Inn There's are many reasons yelp puts GFI at the top of the list of B&B's. First, the Inn: The house is a 1700's, one-time-single-family farmhouse with a very interesting legacy. The rooms have huge ceilings and oversized doors. Each is restored with period details; floors, fireplaces, molding, etc. All the rooms, each with distinctive color pallets, are decorated with hundreds of nicknacks, paintings, sculptures, antique toys, pictures, books all arranged with great care, as if assisted by Tim Burton's set designer. Odd, mysterious, whimsical, and defines the word 'eclectic' in the process. Music from the early/mid 20th century plays from a vintage 1930's radio that has been rewired for streaming. Bedrooms: Our room (Josephine Baker) was the master bedroom, situated at the front of the house with a king size bed on period oak parquet floors and exquisitely appointed with antiques and unique artifacts. The bath was bigger than my first studio apartment in NYC, with white subway tiles, a classic clawfoot tub, and a white tile walk-in shower with a rain head, plush towels, and artisanal soap all adding to the special quality of the room. The rest of the upstairs accommodations includes 5 or 6 other equally unique and diverse rooms and a small communal TV room. But that was just the Bed part - the other 'B' was even better. We stayed two nights. Next-day #1 we were greeted with excellent coffee (which has been noted in other reviews) while we waited for breakfast, which was a Cheddar & Broccoli omelet with a side of local sausage. I have to say; this omelet rivaled the best I have had anywhere - France, Spain, or Italy - and that is no small feat. I believe breakfast can be the BEST meal of the day, and I constantly seek out Trip Advisor, Yelp and other means to find the top recommendations when I travel. Gardner Farm gives them a serous run for it. The second day we were treated to a version of French Toast that was both decadent and sublime, and really hard to describe. It was like an inverted or deconstructed stuffed pastry - not too sweet, nor lacking it - and a small side of perfectly crisp bacon. I impulsively asked for maple syrup, but was swayed to try it first - and the first bite was electrifying. The bread was browned and crisp, with light hints of nutmeg and cinnamon, probably lightly fried in butter. But it was the bed of lemon glaze that sealed the deal. Dreamy, substantial, but at the same time delicate and filling. I can't imagine 'better', only different. These were easily 2 five-star breakfasts - so do the math... If you can, have a look in the kitchen. In the center of the quite large farmhouse room is a huge square marble top island. Over the island is a massive, vintage, former hospital operating room twin lamp lighting fixture. Each light at the end of a 6-foot long (or greater), pivoting, scissors-like mechanical arms can be individually positioned for the best illumination. In keeping with the rest of the house, Young Frankenstein was immediately called to mind. And the host, John, is a blast to hang out with. I am wary of the whole B&B culture and have tempered reservations, but Gardner Inn isn't just a B&B - it is a destination. Highly recommended. read more

I chose the Gardner Farm Inn for our weekend in Troy for its charm. I mean, who can say no to a room called the John Waters Deluxe Queen Room? We stayed here for two nights as New York continues to recover from the Coronavirus pandemic. John is a charming host who shows every concern for the cleanliness of his property, which is decorated with a sense of history and humor. The John Waters room, which has a number of items related to its namesake, was comfortable and fun to look at. The bathroom was light and airy, with high ceilings and a fantastic shower. Breakfast was also excellent. John made an omelet one morning and French toast the other. Absolutely delicious, with comfortable seating outside by the back garden. From the moment we arrived, John made us feel at home! He showed us around the Inn and then brought us into the very spacious king bed room we were staying in on the first floor. Room was beautiful. Huge king bed, comfy couch and chairs to sit in. Bathroom was really nice and A/C was great and cooled room to a great temp. John told us if there was anything we needed, to let him know. The breakfasts we had each morning were outstanding. Fresh fruit with yogurt, spinach, onion, pea and feta omelet, fresh tomato and bacon the first day. French toast with a cream filling I wasn't sure about but had a lemon taste and sausages. His 2 greyhound dogs (Nigel and Margaret) were so cute and affectionate. I fully recommend if you need to stay in the Troy area to choose the Gardner Farm Inn. To top off our stay, John graduated from the same college myself and my wife met at. This is an absolutely wonderful B&B. John is a true gentleman - genuinely warm, welcoming and concerned to ensure a comfortable experience for all his guests. This historic house is gorgeous with loads of original features. The bedrooms are really spacious. Great shower, comfortable bed with luxurious sheets and big fluffy towels. This is a classic case of the judging a book by it's cover. The outside of the Gardner inn completely hides the fact that it holds 5 bedrooms, assorted living and hang out spaces, a week appointed kitchen and a very friendly inn dog. The Gardner Farm Inn is a spectacular example of how an old house can be brought up-to-date the right way. It is obvious that John, the owner and host, has put his heart and soul into this inn. Every room has been appointed with a huge variety of his treasures and collections. From the paintings and photographs hanging on the walls to the shelves full of interesting things, often bringing back memories of times gone by. I found myself wandering around and enjoying what he has on display. We stayed in the Jean Harlow Suite. This room was once the main dining room for the original family. Gorgeous wood floors, high ceilings, huge fireplace and aptly appointed with beautiful furniture, fine linens and luxurious pillows. The bathroom is a good size and is gorgeous. Completely remodeled with white subway tile and marble and new fixtures. Another positive is the great bright light he has provided in the bath. Sufficient enough to apply makeup! That is hard to find in a hotel or B&B. The best part of our stay was getting to know the owner, John. He is a fabulous conversationalist and has done so many interesting things. He invited us to dine in the kitchen for breakfasts. We loved this as we were able to swap stories in the morning and spend time rubbing (his dog) Nigel's tummy. He made many spot-on dining recommendations for eating and even made reservations for us. My husband and I were in Troy to research my family's history in the area. John seemed to know everyone in town. He put us in touch with people who could help us on our quest. We were highly successful thanks to John. We adored our stay with John and his home. He made us feel so welcomed and comfortable. We regretted having to leave after only 3 nights. We hope to visit the Gardner Farm Inn again soon. read more

We visited the Gardner Farm Inn a few days ago. John welcomed us into his lovely home like old friends. John is the best thing about the inn, which is strong praise. He is a sweet and generous man who puts everyone right at ease. The inn is decorated so very thoughtfully-- I could have wandered around for hours absorbed in tiny details. John has an amazing eye for art, antiques, and objets. In every niche you will notice fascinating little surprises. He manages this without appearing the least bit cluttered or pretentious. The rooms are big and airy, the bed was soft and comfy, and the bathrooms are all done in marble, with fine fixtures. I really cannot think of anything I would change. By far the best Bed-n-Breakfast I've stayed in. Restaurant quality breakfast, regularly homemade from scratch. We stayed at the Gardner Farm Inn for 2 nights while in Troy moving our daughter back into RPI. John is nothing short of the Perfect Host. His house is so warm and inviting, you feel at home from the moment you drive up. Our room was very large and the bed was so comfortable. The breakfast was delicious and plentiful. We had to leave at 4:00 am to catch an early morning flight, and John was up and waiting with fresh coffee and breakfast to go. How awesome is he??? He gave us his number to leave with our daughter just in case there was ever an emergency and she needed help. Since we're on the West Coast, this is huge for us. I travel regularly to the capital region and am so glad to have found this place. John has done an exquisite job restoring and decorating this home. He was kind enough to give us a tour of the entire home and each room is beautifully decorated and accented with an eclectic collection of antiques. All the baths are completely up-to-date and modern and all the guest rooms and baths were extremely clean. Breakfast that morning was scrambled eggs and cheese, bacon, toast and home-baked muffins, plus very strong (good) coffee and great conversation with the innkeeper who immediately made us feel like family. I just returned home to Philadelphia after a lovely Christmas visit with my family. The house was full so this time I stayed at the beautiful Gardner Farm Inn instead of a hotel. What a treat! I might miss this Inn almost more then the family. John, the owner was a sweet, gracious and friendly guy. I had never stayed at a B&B before and was a little uncertain. From the moment I arrived I felt welcomed and so happy to be there. I love dogs so I was happy to see two big dog beds before I got in the door. John has two gentle and beautiful (and very calm and quiet) rescue greyhounds, Josie and Bernadette, who quickly became my buddies. If you're not a dog person the house is large enough they could stay inn their room and you'd never know dogs lived there. The accommodations were superb. I stayed in the Oscar Wilde room which was perfect. The bathroom was bigger then my bedroom, with a gorgeous claw foot tub I enjoyed every evening and huge separate shower. John was always around if I ever needed anything. Every morning he greeted me in the kitchen with coffee and he was dissappointed I was trying to eat healthy and would forgo his stuffed french toast. The house was gorgeous, very clean and impeccably decorated with such charm. The location was also ideal as it was half a mile from my parents house and half a mile from popular bars and restaurants that are popping up in the ever changing and growing town of Troy. Honestly, I can't say enough about this Inn. OH! I almost forgot- on Christmas morning when I came down for coffee John had little gift set out for me next to my coffee cup. No touch is spared here. I hesitate to sing the Gardner Family Inn's praises as I loved having the place to myself and would be broken hearted if he were all booked up when I come for a visit. But, John and his amazing B&B deserve it. I hope everyone visiting the Capital District or just looking for a weekend get away have the chance to enjoy this gem.
