Just got back from our second stay within 8 months, so that tells you everything already! The Gardner Farm Inn is a magical place. It is an absolutely stunning home carefully curated with an incredible mix of fine antiques and vintage kitsch. It's perfect. You can spend hours poring over the house and roaming and still not notice everything. It's nearly a living being on its own. John is an impeccable host. He is a joy to be around. He is so friendly and fun and his love for his home and sharing it with his guests is truly special. We've stayed in both the Jean Harlow & John Waters rooms. Both very different experiences and both were perfect. Staying with John doesn't feel transactional at ALL. It truly feels like you're staying with an old friend, a brother, or an uncle. You feel welcomed and cared for and relaxed. And you will fall in love with John's greyhounds - Margaret & Nigel. Both dogs are such loving and calming presences. And the breakfasts are incredible! We are already planning our third visit and eyeing the Mae West room next. Highly, highly, recommend!

My husband and I had first been to this establishment in December 2016 and loved it. When we were planning our Valentine's getaway 2022, I was so excited to see this place survived COVID-19. The Gardner Farm Inn was the deciding factor for us to go to the Troy, NY area this year. We stayed in the John Waters room for our most recent visit. I have attached some pictures from this quirky space. Being in the room made me not want to leave. The Inn's owner John is attentive (without being overbearing) and kind. The food he prepared was delicious and well thought out. I cannot recommend this place enough.

Frittata, sausage, fresh fruit, fresh mozzarella with basil -- handmade by John. Delicious. Good coffee too.

Lovely farm house with quirky, whimsical decor inside. Friendly and mellow proprietor -- great cook -- with two friendly greyhounds. Very comfortable. Easy drive (30-90 mins) to Saratoga, Williamstown, Tanglewood/Berkshires, Vermont, Cooperstown ... and lovely Rensselaer county.

Not a big deal, but I don't know that this is something you'll really know until check-in. The building a few doors down where I stayed also appeared to be historic though a bit less grand on the main level than the main house. The lobby of the building was festively decorated for the holiday. With the bright windows, a sofa, Christmas music playing, and a tree twinkling, one afternoon I couldn't resist getting a little work done in the lobby. My room was cozy with a small kitchenette, bed, arm chairs, and desk. The arm chairs are cute but not very comfortable. The desk was perfectly positioned overlooking the windows, which made for a great spot to work. The bed was pretty uncomfortable and probably needs to be replaced (it was sinking on both sides with a high spot in the middle). For my solo traveling girlies: +The inn is not staffed all night +Doors have old fashioned keys, deadbolts, and chains +The surrounding neighborhood seems nice and safe enough +Parking is slightly off site and requires walking around the block or through the back of the property. If you don't need to bring a car, I'd opt for uber +I think there may be some permanent residents in the additional property (a couple doors down from the main house) All and all, it's a beautiful, historic property, which is one of my favorite sorts to stay in. I wouldn't likely stay there again solo, but would absolutely stay with my partner!

I feel bad giving this place a less than perfect score as the staff were nice and helpful, but it…read morefell short in some important areas. The main one being that I was unable to enjoy the tub as much as I would have liked. The first night the jets didn't work, and someone was nice enough to come by the next day and fix it. Later that night I was looking forward to finally using the tub as intended (and even cancelled a spa day for it) but the other guests had already used all of the hot water by then. I left without getting much of any enjoyment from the tub, which is the main reason I booked the room in the first place. The other issue was the parking situation, which, to be fair, I should have anticipated before booking, considering its location. The parking spot doesn't come with the room, so you must pay extra to access it, and finding it in the dark after dinner is not easy when you have to follow a paper map and there is a line of cars behind you. Walking back to the inn alone in the dark was also pretty unsettling. Overall, this experience was the opposite of relaxing. I will say that the property is very pretty, though, and seemed to be clean.

The fish was cooked to perfection, seasoned well and came in good portions. The greens were delicious, tender and flavorful. For a moment I transported back to my Grandmother's kitchen table. Best of all -no meat is used to cook them! Get that. ::Sigh:: Candied Yam/Sweet Potatoes: I will not have again but I am more of a baked sweet potato person myself. Minus one star since sweet potatoes are my favorite and I couldn't dig these. The service: 8 Stars here! Better than service, there is community up in there! At first glance this may appear to be a normal pool, but don't be fooled, this thing is hott, even by jacuzzi standards. The hot tub-side bar is very nice and if the older bartender is working he will promptly fetch you any drink you want and even features a drink of the day! However, be warned: if the younger bartender is working the service will be mediocre at best and will be accompanied with a lot of whining. He is also quite pushy with tips. The owners run a tight ship and make sure their two employees are always professional. For the most part you would probably not even notice they're in the same room, until the owners start threatening and berating them with rhetorical questions. Certainly alarming and uncomfortable, but you can't argue with the results. As another guest pointed out, this establishment can certainly host some sordid characters from time to time. One guest in particular always has a penchant for commotion. He states that he is a lawyer who specializes in "Bird Law" (didn't know that was even a thing) and is currently laid up in the lobby there, after injuring himself in a boosted board accident in the parking lot. That was another instance of the outstanding service provided by this establishment, as the help quickly helped the man to the side of the road, called emergency services, disposed of the board (now for sale in the gift shop) and even rode in the ambulance with him to the hospital. This lawyer obviously has drinking problem, because in another visit he became so inebriated off of margaritas he started dashing about the grounds and taking clothes off. Ultimately, this ended in him vomiting and passing out. Luckily, again the owners were able to address this issue quickly. The hose cleaned both the vomit and coaxed the drunkard back into his room. In yet another instance, this same lawyer tried to evict a lady from her room. This was after drinking a bottle Wild Turkey Rare Breed (kudos to the owners for always having this high end whiskey in stock). After initially trying to kick the lawyer out, the owners were able to reach an amicable agreement with the lawyer and things settled down after that. Still, not how I intended to spend my Easter. Overall if you find yourself in upstate New York you won't find yourself a more interesting place to stay. Just wish they would change some of their policy's on nudity.
