I recently stayed a few nights at The Morgan State House Inn and had a mostly pleasant stay…read more I thought I was staying in their main house, but they actually had my room a couple doors down in some studios that are apparently also part of the inn. Not a big deal, but I don't know that this is something you'll really know until check-in. The building a few doors down where I stayed also appeared to be historic though a bit less grand on the main level than the main house. The lobby of the building was festively decorated for the holiday. With the bright windows, a sofa, Christmas music playing, and a tree twinkling, one afternoon I couldn't resist getting a little work done in the lobby. My room was cozy with a small kitchenette, bed, arm chairs, and desk. The arm chairs are cute but not very comfortable. The desk was perfectly positioned overlooking the windows, which made for a great spot to work. The bed was pretty uncomfortable and probably needs to be replaced (it was sinking on both sides with a high spot in the middle). For my solo traveling girlies: +The inn is not staffed all night +Doors have old fashioned keys, deadbolts, and chains +The surrounding neighborhood seems nice and safe enough +Parking is slightly off site and requires walking around the block or through the back of the property. If you don't need to bring a car, I'd opt for uber +I think there may be some permanent residents in the additional property (a couple doors down from the main house) All and all, it's a beautiful, historic property, which is one of my favorite sorts to stay in. I wouldn't likely stay there again solo, but would absolutely stay with my partner!

I feel bad giving this place a less than perfect score as the staff were nice and helpful, but it…read morefell short in some important areas. The main one being that I was unable to enjoy the tub as much as I would have liked. The first night the jets didn't work, and someone was nice enough to come by the next day and fix it. Later that night I was looking forward to finally using the tub as intended (and even cancelled a spa day for it) but the other guests had already used all of the hot water by then. I left without getting much of any enjoyment from the tub, which is the main reason I booked the room in the first place. The other issue was the parking situation, which, to be fair, I should have anticipated before booking, considering its location. The parking spot doesn't come with the room, so you must pay extra to access it, and finding it in the dark after dinner is not easy when you have to follow a paper map and there is a line of cars behind you. Walking back to the inn alone in the dark was also pretty unsettling. Overall, this experience was the opposite of relaxing. I will say that the property is very pretty, though, and seemed to be clean.

***This review is for the Sunday Brunch***…read more The best catfish in Albany hands down! I've tried fish frys, barbecue joints, seafood places and more. Angel's has them beat here! The fish was cooked to perfection, seasoned well and came in good portions. The greens were delicious, tender and flavorful. For a moment I transported back to my Grandmother's kitchen table. Best of all -no meat is used to cook them! Get that. ::Sigh:: Candied Yam/Sweet Potatoes: I will not have again but I am more of a baked sweet potato person myself. Minus one star since sweet potatoes are my favorite and I couldn't dig these. The service: 8 Stars here! Better than service, there is community up in there! Go enjoy, be merry, eat like you're at home. No pork on the menu whatsoever -nope, not even the bacon. So, all you brunch lovers who have been searching for par fair minus the bacon drippings, head over to Angel's Cafe B&B for their once a months Sunday brunch.

She cooked breakfast for us and was wonderful to converse with. The only downside is that it is on the border of the business district (right around the corner from the police station and a Hilton and multiple banks) and a bad section of town. If you stay there don't turn left down S Pearl st, esp walking. That is the only reason for the last star missing. Great place to stay!!

I stayed at this hotel recently for a weekend-long event, and I enjoyed my time here. Our…read moreaccommodations for the convention worked out well, and we even have room to grow. The hotel staff were very friendly and accommodating. The food for the meals we got for our event were very good, delivered on time, and the staff were very professional. The layout is a bit nonstandard in that the floors below the third are labeled (in descending order) as L (Lobby), BL (Ballroom level, which is where you enter), and ML (I don't remember what that stood for, we never went on that floor). Check-in was a breeze, and coffee is provided in the morning in the lobby. Meeting/function space is available on all the "L" levels. The hotel has a dining area. Breakfast is available a la carte or as a buffet for $12.50, which was a very reasonable price for what was provided. My room, a suite, had a view of Troy to the west and south. The shades made the room VERY dark at night (a plus), but since the hotel is along Route 7, you could hear traffic, particularly motorcycles and sirens, at night (a minus). The hotel is "slightly" older (I heard it's 15 years old), and it reflects that in some ways, including a traditional shower, and key-into-slot access instead of proximity/tap keys. One quirk about my room is that the bathroom door swung out and actually overlapped with the space for the door into the room, meaning if the bathroom door was open, you couldn't open the other door easily - rather poor planning on whoever designed this. There were a couple of very small glitches with my room, but they were easily and quickly fixed by the staff. This hotel is a good choice for a stay in Troy. It's not adjacent to either downtown or RPI, but it's reasonably close.

We learned that one should request a room on the quiet side of the building or get a room on the 6th or 7th floor because of noise from the very busy street---the 1br were only avail on the street side and having a room on the higher floor didn't really help...pretty noisy. Being on the 6th floor....water temp and pressure were issues. Lastly, as a diamond member you are supposed to get a $10 credit for yourself and one other registered guest in your room --in my case, my wife. Just reviewed our bill and noticed we only got one credit each day even with receipts that clearly indicated 2 people....and yes, rechecked to make sure my wife's name was on the reservation and it was. So....couple things they need to work on.

At first glance this may appear to be a normal pool, but don't be fooled, this thing is hott, even by jacuzzi standards. The hot tub-side bar is very nice and if the older bartender is working he will promptly fetch you any drink you want and even features a drink of the day! However, be warned: if the younger bartender is working the service will be mediocre at best and will be accompanied with a lot of whining. He is also quite pushy with tips. The owners run a tight ship and make sure their two employees are always professional. For the most part you would probably not even notice they're in the same room, until the owners start threatening and berating them with rhetorical questions. Certainly alarming and uncomfortable, but you can't argue with the results. As another guest pointed out, this establishment can certainly host some sordid characters from time to time. One guest in particular always has a penchant for commotion. He states that he is a lawyer who specializes in "Bird Law" (didn't know that was even a thing) and is currently laid up in the lobby there, after injuring himself in a boosted board accident in the parking lot. That was another instance of the outstanding service provided by this establishment, as the help quickly helped the man to the side of the road, called emergency services, disposed of the board (now for sale in the gift shop) and even rode in the ambulance with him to the hospital. This lawyer obviously has drinking problem, because in another visit he became so inebriated off of margaritas he started dashing about the grounds and taking clothes off. Ultimately, this ended in him vomiting and passing out. Luckily, again the owners were able to address this issue quickly. The hose cleaned both the vomit and coaxed the drunkard back into his room. In yet another instance, this same lawyer tried to evict a lady from her room. This was after drinking a bottle Wild Turkey Rare Breed (kudos to the owners for always having this high end whiskey in stock). After initially trying to kick the lawyer out, the owners were able to reach an amicable agreement with the lawyer and things settled down after that. Still, not how I intended to spend my Easter. Overall if you find yourself in upstate New York you won't find yourself a more interesting place to stay. Just wish they would change some of their policy's on nudity.

From the street and the upper parking lot this hotel looks closed but drive around to the main entrance and everything starts to take shape, The front steps lead up to a very cozy lobby with a fire in the fireplace and beside that is the front desk. The staff at the front desk were very efficient and friendly with getting us checked in. The whole decor is colonial in style without being stuffy. The room was different in style than the front lobby. The room was extremely comfortable and cozy which was needed after a long night of travel and the first college tour. From the desk and headboards the style was a bit more modern with the bathroom door being a barn door style . The room was very quiet and the view was serene. In the morning the complimentary breakfast was a little above average with a couple unique items like fresh scones. This is a place that I would book again if I needed to stay in the area.
