Another weekend, hike at Renaissance Park in Charlotte. The trails were not marked well it was very muddy and very slippery but by the same token, it was very enjoyable several different surfaces to walk on many little bridges across.

This large park is closest to my home and is underneath the final approach to CLT's runway 36R. So you might see me and you'll definitely see planes overhead. The park includes a separate golf course and a separate tennus center. There are also two softball fields (not available for practice), nine sand volleyball courts and a series of bike trails. This highlight of the park is an 18 hole championship disc golf course. Lots of parking and a few spots in the shade. A couple of picnic tables are scattered about and that was where I sat today with my takeout lunch to enjoy some "al fresco dining" before continuing on my errands and exploration. If you frequent rows of shops along Park Road you too may find this short jaunt a nice respite from the noisy traffic cruising down the road. This park is located, as mentioned, at the heart of an old neighborhood making up the solid heart of one of Charlotte's largest residential areas. It's enough green space to get a short walk in or simply sit on the grass for a picnic on a nice day. There's a very large array of playground and jungle gym for the kids to work out all their excess energy. There's even a work out area nearby for general fitness - aimed more at adults. There's a small rose garden and a paved path around the park, not to mention the convenient sidewalk lining the road right next to it. Probably the icing on this cake is the disc golf course. I don't disc golf, but this one looks easy-peasy for the beginners out there that may be just getting into the sport. While this park may not be super stellar or anything special, I'd argue that it's a hidden gem of sorts due to its location tucked into the neighborhood and how absolutely quiet it is even now, as we sit at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic when everybody just wants to get out into nature. Want to sit at a distance from people, have a bite to eat, read a book or write under the shade of a big tree? That's right, go here everyone. The secret is out.

Not enough shade in the parking lot but beggars can't be choosers. I stopped by this morning with a cup of coffee and a bagel to enjoy while dining "al fresco." There are some benches in the shade. Note that they do not allow pickups from the elementary school here. You can park and come in side but they don't want the kids walking to the park for pickup.

The park itself had disc golf in the trails (which you can walk through without playing), soccer fields, plenty of parking, and bathrooms. Fields are surrounded by fencing. Restrooms did not seem to be maintained throughout the day so as the day wore on, and more people were using it, it was a mess - no toilet paper, dirty messy floors, a couple of toilets needing maintenance. Not pleasant at all. There's only one restroom building and for our tournament, there was always a line at the women's restroom. Parking was horrendous. For any other regular event, there's probably enough parking but for this tournament it filled up quickly by 8am and people were starting to park in the grass. The Park officials announced during the tournament that anyone parking on the grass will be towed. They did suggest other parking areas on a gravel path that were still pretty limited. If you're there for a big event, just get there early enough to park.
