I love patronizing small businesses in my area whenever I can so when I began searching for a local upholsterer, Rendel's fit the bill perfectly. My mission was to restore an antique child's rocking chair that was bought 92 years ago for my father-in-law. After I did the wicker repair and painting myself, I turned to Rendel's for new upholstery. Rendel's has been a family-owned institution in Ann Arbor since 1926...that's an amazing 95 years of service to the community! Office Manager Mike did a masterful job of squeezing in my small job before Christmas despite the shop being loaded with plenty of work. It was very much appreciated. I chose a luxuriant burgundy-colored textured fabric from Rendel's small lot remnants for the upholstry. With Rendel's professional craftsmanship, the end result was absolutely awesome. we have an heirloom settee that was in storage for about seven years because it was severely cat-scratched. we didn't want to throw it out but there are no upholsters in our vacinity so we weren't sure what to do. Rendel's is located 50+ miles from home so this transaction would be a bit difficult logistically because we'd need to rent a truck to get the settee to and from their shop. but MIKE made it easy. after a few discussions of what we were looking forward, he sent us several fabric swatches so that we could chose the new fabric without having to take the settee there first. we dropped off the settee on 10/30 with the expectation of job completion before christmas. but SIDIBE and his associate did a FANTASTIC JOB and finished it in less than two weeks! we brought it home yesterday and it's GORGEOUS!!! fanstatic workmanship and a JOB VERY WELL DONE. I had two projects completed at Rendel's. The first was reupholstering a couch, love seat and chair so that they all matched. They refinished the wood on love seat and did a great job with the upholstery. The fabric selection is tremendous and they even let me take the floor samples home for a few days so that I could see them in my own house. I had matching throw pillows made and they look great. The price was right and the workmanship was high quality. In all, they did a five star job. However, when I took my second project to them, they messed it up badly. I took an antique oval wooden coffee table that I had inherited from my grandmother to them to have the glass top replaced, wood refinished and two legs reattached. I thought they did a good job cleaning up the table and refinishing it, but the other two parts of the project were terrible! The person who cut the glass didn't use the template I had given them and clearly cut the oval piece by hand (the curve was wobbly). It was not a good curve and it didn't even fit my table! Not only that, they didn't give me my template back, so now the next person I take the table to won't even have that to work with. Furthermore, one of the legs fell off within a few months of having the table back in my house. When I told them of the issues, they told me to bring the table back at my convenience and they would try to fix it. Of course, I was moving shortly thereafter, so I had no chance to bring the table back and wait for them to either fix it, or mess it up more. I paid several hundred dollars just to get a messed up table in my house! I would give them one star for their completion of this project. Bottom line: minor wood restoring work and upholstery is what they are good at. Take more complicated restoration projects and anything that needs glass to someone else. read more

I called several places and Rendel's was in the mid range for price. Several more expensive places were individuals working out of their homes. Rendel's rejuvenated and recovered a class 1950's chair. I chose a fabric with a difficult pattern and they matched it all the way through multiple welts. They even matched the patterns on the buttons with the back of the seat. It is art. They got it done in a timely fashion, were patient and non-pushy about my multiple trips in and out with fabric samples and arranged a special delivery time. These people are professionals and were are lucky to have them here in AA. read more

It's been several months since we had Rendel's reupholster an antique sofa (lots of buttons on the back), antique recliner, a 7-ft sofa, 5-ft sofa and rocking chair. They did an amazing job! They were very accommodating and made every effort to get all of them done before a big family event (which they did!) Every one was helpful and pleasant - including the guys who picked up and dropped off the furniture. Great experience! Great work! read more

This actually is not the only re-upholsterer in town. The cost and turnaround info the owner gave us when we visited originally and showed him all our photos turned out to be incorrect (+40% higher cost and 2 months slower turnaround than estimated), but we went ahead and asked them to reupholster the two chairs. That was in September 2020. They required payment of $800 for fabric in order to keep a place in line, so we did. Then he revised the pickup date from October to December. When I called in December, the new pickup date was January. They did pick up in January and did the work in a little more than 2 weeks. Then the owner called to tell me we had to pay the balance before they would deliver the chairs. We wanted to see the work before paying for them, and the paperwork didn't say payment was required before delivery. In that discussion, the owner got quite unpleasant (which he was in every interaction anyway) but did finally agree to deliver the chairs. The work they did was fine, although the seat of one of the chairs is now hard as a rock, which I specifically requested in September that they not make the seat hard. He told me then that it would be comfortable. One reason to reupholster this chair was that it used to be very comfortable. The net is that after almost five months of nothing but unpleasantness from the owner, we do have the chairs and they look fine. The other employees are pleasant and businesslike, but if I wanted to do another project, I wouldn't choose to work with this guy. read more

Just calling Rendel's was a turn-off. The man I spoke to said "bring in a sample of your fabric and lots of pictures and I will do an estimate". I described the loveseat in detail and he said, "just come in and bring pictures and then I will give you an idea of price". I dealt with this company 35 years ago and they were pricey and arrogant - I guess it is true that leopards don't change their spots. I would never call them again or refer them to anyone! read more

Just got my grandmother's sofa and chair back from Rendel's. I don't think they have EVER looked this good. They did an outstanding job down to the last little detail. Everyone was easy to work with. We have used Rendel's several times. They always do a great job, though they are on the expensive side. Last time I was in however, left a bad taste in my mouth. I wanted a quote on a chair with 2 loose cushions, so all I needed to have done was have two smallish cushions recovered. I walked in and was not even greeted by the woman at the front desk (jennifer I think?) I stood there just waiting around for a good 3 minutes after she looked at me and finally said she would be right with me after I had been standing there quite a while and she proceeded to pickup the phone and make a call. Then very curtly wanted to know what I wanted. I felt like I was annoying her a bit. After I asked them to have someone help me get the chair out of my car since I am pregnant, and they convinced the owner to look at it (who barely acknowledged me either-even though we have had over 3 pieces done here in the last 2 years). Estimate was over $500 for two cushions to be re-upholstered (that includes getting fabric from them-the cheapest they have is $50 a yd and they penalize you 20% to bring your own) and have some wood glue put in one wood part of the chair. I was shocked, and we know they are not the cheapest since they do high quality work. But the thing that did it for me was the poor customer service. Won't be returning. read more
