Very disappointing experience. I initially sent photos, clearly explained that the chair needed new foam, and was quoted $600 not including fabric. Provided fabric books so I can browse thru. Ended up deciding with another fabric I found on my own. After that, I asked for an updated/formal quote. I understand people get busy, so I gave it some time. About two weeks later, I followed up because I genuinely wanted to support a local business, especially since he is located very close to me. I did not receive a response, so I followed up again the next day. Then the quote suddenly became $1,250--not including fabric. When I questioned why the price had more than doubled, I was told it was because the chair needed new foam, even though that was included in my original request. I explained that was included in the original quote so I asked what changed? No response since then. I received several other quotes, all hundreds less, with some even including fabric. He wasn't the cheapest either from start. For context, this is a relatively simple armless chair. There are no upholstered arms or sides--just the seat and back so it didn't make sense. If the original quote was a mistake, just say that. Instead, the poor communication and unexplained price increase made me feel like my three weeks was wasted. I specifically wanted to support a local business and had several more vintage pieces to reupholster, but I'll be taking that work elsewhere. Rene did a great job with our linen sofa! It had down feathers that were in a casing inside the cushions, but the casing had disintegrated over time. So the feathers were coming out of the cushions, prickling us regularly, and making our loving room floor look like we had attacked a chicken. Rene made new casings and stuffed the pillows with new down. Now there's no more prickly chicken problems and the sofa is plump and comfy! The casing inside is well-made with quality fabric, the down is full and heavy, and the line/ shape/ aesthetic of the sofa looks new again. I was drawn to Rene's reviews online because he sounded like a real person. I was hoping to find a "these are the people in your neighborhood" vibe with someone who does great work near our house. A few days ago I called and asked if I could email over some photos to get an estimate for furniture refinishing and cane repair on 4 rocking chairs and one couch. Rene Guzman said yes so I took the time to send an e-mail and photos to him. However, instead of sending back an estimate, he wrote back that he could give me a detailed itemized quote for $350!!! He further explained that if I did the work with his company, he would apply $350 credit to the total. What a gonif! I didn't need a detailed estimate--I just needed an estimate--it could have even been a range. I responded, "No, sorry, that's ridiculous. Forget it." He responded, "Thank you for trying, no worries". I responded, "No worries? I see a worry. You attempted to cheat me out of $350, you wasted my time, and your outrageous conduct will be the subject of a review." Then he said he would call Yelp and report me because he had not conducted any business with me and the topper was that he wrote, "karma will come back to you when you want to harm others unjustly". All things considered, I would avoid doing business with this individual. I am giving him one star though because that is the minimum. read more
