They had signage to designate which ones you could feed the animal food to and which ones you couldn't enter due to the animals resting. I really liked how they sectioned off all the animals off to the left side with its own entrance and exit and lots of sanitizing and handwashing stations nearby. They had some new things at the farm too. I saw signage advertising Cuddling with Calves for $20 (kids 8+). They also had some additional calves to see and pet along the way. So adorable! Outside of the animal area, they had a new section, Peacock Pedalers, that allowed kids and adults to ride tricycles around. They also had refreshment stations within the farm for drinks, kettlecorn, and other snacks, which made it convenient. What surprised me was that the features that were typically busy on our past visits, like the mini zip lines and the barrel ride, were very little to no waits. They offered lots of seating for taking a break and grabbing some food from the three food trucks they offered. The pulled pork nachos were yummy! It was a great deal to spend the day at the farm for $20 tickets. Yes, they offered lots of additions like the animal feed, train tickets, and gem sluicing for a price but not really necessary to have a great experience. They are the only local source I have been able to find that can regularly supply me with locally raised chickens that eat organic grain, native plants, and insects. Their birds actually move around in a large open space, hunting and pecking at bugs and local forage. (What a concept)! I stopped buying organic chicken from Costco and even Whole Foods after I did a little research about it. I discovered that Petaluma Farms, which supplies organic chicken to Whole Foods, boasts that their chickens have one square foot to live in, instead of the industry standard of 3/4 square foot per bird. Seriously? It's right on their website. I was paying $14 for a chicken that was living in a space a little bigger than a piece of copy paper for it's entire life. It is widely known that even though birds in these environments have "outdoor access", most of them never actually get out there because they're crammed together inside. I currently have a six-month chicken subscription with Rise and Shine that started in May. Every month, Mike, the owner, drives from Fallon to Reno and delivers three chickens to my door. I prepaid with Paypal, and I don't even have to leave my house. Last Fall, we preordered 25 birds and they were all delivered at once (they raise them specifically for you). We plan to do that again after our subscription ends. Last year, we also ordered a turkey for Thanksgiving and a goose for Christmas. (That was really cool; we had never had goose before.) Our family has completely gone local when it comes to buying meat, and we will never go back. All poultry comes from Rise and Shine and beef and lamb comes from Albaugh Farms. We're still looking for a local source for pork. Until then, we've essentially given it up. I highly recommend Rise and Shine Farms without hesitation.

They had a nice little selection of goodies for sale, and overall the vibe was really chill. However... there was a cat hanging around that became a bit of a deal-breaker. It climbed right up on the table where the utensils, napkins, and bagged chips were -- literally sat on the chip bags like it owned the place. Clearly not its first time doing that. who wants cat booty on their food? I'm all for farm animals and pets, but I don't think they should be around areas where food is being handled or served -- especially where straws and napkins are kept. Then our drink came out with a straw already in it, and while it was brought from the kitchen, it made me wonder if the cat's allowed back there too. They also mentioned a flower garden we could check out, which we did but it took only a few minutes, and then we headed out.
