It turned out that the job had a complication that needed creativity. Jose came up with the solution and it now looks beautiful. There was a time a few years ago I would recommend this company but the service is now terrible. They'll quote hours and then milk it. I hired them to paint a very small bathroom and bedroom. Two of them showed up and the one who was painting the bathroom took 2 hours, 1 coat of paint and did not paint the trim. The one who was painting the bedroom, after 2 hours, he hadn't even completed one coat and when I inquired, he said, "We take our time." They never put a 2nd coat and never painted the baseboards in either room. When I originally requested the quote they tried to tell me it was an 8 hour job. A "Javier" from the company responded that the person who was tasked with the job was "no longer with the company," thanked me for my feedback and claimed he'd share the comments with his other techs. When I responded that he wasn't acknowledging the missing equipment I paid for, he emailed back, accused me of lying about his "good workers," called my job "small" and claimed the cleats I mentioned in the request weren't in their paperwork for the estimate (I submitted proof he was wrong on both accounts). I let him know he could simply reimburse me for the cleats, complete the job as it was paid for or I would be submitting honest feedback to Google, Yelp, etc. I then IMMEDIATELY received a phone call where "Javier" verbally promised to submit a check for the cost of the items "within the next week." I'm so sad to update this review, but the original praise I heaped on Hourly Husbands in 2017 seems to be undeserved in 2022. They do not respond to work requests and are rude over the phone--a total 180 from my experiences 5 years ago. I've used them twice, and have recommended them to friends and neighbors countless times. I submitted a work request on Thursday, June 16th via their web portal, and received no response. I called on Monday, June 27th, and was told they cannot give estimates or updates about via telephone and to send an email, so I did. I should also note that the woman I spoke to on the phone was wholly uninterested in customer service and seemed irritated that I had called her place of work at all. It's now Thursday, June 30th, and I still haven't received an update via the portal or email. Even allowing for holidays and weekends that's a 9-day period to even wait to schedule something. I could have had the work done and dusted at this point but am not even on a schedule because I was holding out for what I thought was a gem of a company instead. I get that lots of people are doing home improvement projects these days and the Great Resignation has left many businesses understaffed, but there are multiple ways of automating responses so that people know they are slammed if this is the case. Currently their website says "We will contact you within 48 hours to schedule your appointment." It's been two weeks without a peep. It's a shame because they used to be so great! read more

It is with great sadness that I am actually writing this because my prior experiences with this company have been positive. I've been doing business with this company since 2019. I don't know what has happened, but the lack of professionalism and unresponsiveness have now forced me to put this out. I'm a property owner who resided in California and used this company to do some repairs while there. They were great. Professional, clear, and concise estimates, good quality work. I wish they were still that way so I wouldn't feel forced to write this, but am at my wit's end and need to get the keys to my property back. I hired them some months ago to do waterproofing work in my small basement store in DC. Paid them the total amount, and when I arrived to check on the work found trash, unfinished walls, etc. I immediately called to inquire what happened and why the work was not finished. I provided pictures of how the space was left, and Salomon, their POC, apologized profusely and promised he would look into it. I was never given an explanation but was assured that they would clear out all the construction debris, which included the coverage of an exterior storm drain that had concrete. I also asked them to look into another matter at one of the other spaces in the same building. A clogged shower drain. Because tenants had just moved in, I had asked that they focus on the shower first so as not to disturb the new tenants prior to their move-in. This was ignored. I was also told that the wall job in the basement turned out to be more and that I would be charged an additional 800 dollars, and that he (Salomon) was trying hard to negotiate with the management since he knew the situation I'd faced with defaulting tenants, etc. and that they had left such a mess. The shower project became a bigger issue than they could resolve, so I was asked to call a plumber, which I did. At this point, my new tenants had moved in the ceiling in the space below the shower had to be opened. The plumber did his job, and since then, I have been attempting to get ahold of HH and their staff with no replies. No responses to emails, which is the ONLY way the manager responds. BUT HE/SHE DOESN'T. Salomon continues to decline my calls and doesn't respond to my texts either, and I'm now finding myself having to chase someone to get my keys to my property. This is completely unacceptable and unprofessional. I have been nice and respectful and paid my bills. I expect the same from any company I do business with. Based on more recent reviews, whatever is going on at this company, it is obvious that they have gone in a direction that potential clients should consider if selecting them. At this point, I would not recommend them, not because their quality is not good, but because they are unreliable, especially when it comes to communication-something that should be done in good faith and trust with customers. I had someone come in for 8 hours (non-refundable) which was unfortunate because it quickly became apparent I couldn't communicate effectively with the handyman. I tried, but the language barrier meant multiple instances of wasted time because he didn't understand what I wanted (like remove blinds on one window but don't put new ones up, for example), Then the wheels completely fell off when I wanted help replacing my window screens to be cat-proof. I explained multiple times what I needed, then halfway through noticed he was doing something different (and less work). So half of the day I paid for was essentially wasted because the screens still aren't secured. So yeah, don't believe their website on what they say their people can help with. Super simple projects only. (oh, almost forgot, I also wanted something mounted to a stud. He looked at it and claimed there wasn't a stud. DO NOT USE! I am a repeat client of Hourly Husbands. I needed some minor repairs and so I made an appointment. I was told someone would arrive between 2:00 and 3:00 pm. About two days before the appointment, I began receiving emails and texts reminding me that someone would be at my home between 2:00 and 3:00, so clearly my appointment had been confirmed as scheduled. No one ever showed up, however. After waiting for nearly an hour after the arrival window closed, I called. The answering service told me I could not talk with anyone at the company - my only choices were to leave a message with the service or email the company. I left a message with the service but no one contacted me. After an additional 30 minutes or so, I emailed the company - again no answer. Later on, I emailed again. No answer. Finally, around 5:45 I sent one last email and then gave up. No one ever responded. EXTREMELY UNPROFESSIONAL. I can understand the handyman may have been running late for whatever reason, but he should have called, texted or emailed me to tell me he was delayed. So not only was the company extremely unprofessional, it was also VERY INCONSIDERATE of my time. There are a lot of handyman service providers in the area. Use one of them. I hired these guys to install a sconce, hang mount curtain rods, and repair rotting wood. The wood was done brilliantly, but only one curtain rod was installed (too high), and the sconce is at an angle. But then I just discovered that I no longer have a ceiling fan because of the botched sconce installation. Not excited to find out how much it's gonna cost to fix what they did... and they didn't wear their masks the whole time, which is kinda scary when you've got a kid too young to be vaccinated. read more

These guys used to be awesome. Unfortunately, something is terribly wrong. Most recently, I requested services and was informed that the "office manager" only communicated via email. Well, the office manger does not communicate, even via email. After being given a series of available appointments , I selected a date. I received no confirmation. When I followed up, I I received an email stating that date was not available and that I was being assigned another date (that was never part of the original set of available dates). When I followed up again to inform them the new date would not work for me, I was ghosted. The new date was the 7:30 am the very next day and I didn't want their team member to waste a trip. Three emails and two phone calls later and they never replied. No response at all. I am so disappointed given my previous experience with this company. They used to be awesome. Based on all the great reviews and experiences, I decided to give these folks a try. Unfortunately, my experience has been far from great. What started as a minor faucet leak has resulted in a major nightmare. I wouldn't recommend this business for plumbing services specifically. I am now stuck with a service fee bill and a bigger mess to deal with-had to shut off my water and find another plumber to fix their work. Tried reasoning with the office manager as I love to support local business and am happy to pay 120 bucks for a job well done. My current reality after hiring this company: I'm stuck paying their $120 fee for substandard work, cleaning their mess, ordering more parts, and paying another plumber to resolve this because they left a bigger mess... You can decide if you want to deal with this drama..I opted to pay for $120 bucks so I don't have to hear from them again. We have used Hourly Husbands a few times over the past year or so; they have become our go-to handyman service. They ask for photos and detailed descriptions of the work needed to be done, which I found off-putting at first, but apparently it allows them to be more efficient at scheduling the right workers and assigning the correct amount of time. They have been effective at most of the jobs for which we have hired them (for example, carpentry and minor plumbing), although recently the person they sent to try to fix a ceiling fan light fixture was unable find the problem (we gave up and hired a real electrician who finally got the job done). read more

The process to book a job relies on email communication that often go unanswered or takes a considerable amount of time for a response. I would give Hourly Husbands 10 stars if I could because they are simply the best out there. When I made my appointment, I had just two projects: replacing a faulty garbage disposal and fixing one of the sinks in the master bedroom. Between when I made the appointment and when Jose2 arrived, one of our toilets needed fixing, as did the shower head, and he was happy to tackle those jobs as well. With COVID-19 and my having a weakened immune system, I had requested that extra precautions be taken in order for it to be safe to have someone in my home. Jose2 arrived promptly at 8am as scheduled in full PPE: a mask, gloves, and shoe covers, with his tools freshly disinfected. He proceeded to finish all of the projects quickly and efficiently, even changing his gloves between jobs and putting on new shoe covers after going to his van to retrieve different items! And the best part: I had been able to take advantage of the 15% discount offered on projects scheduled by April 30th, so all of that work was done for less than $200. Jose2 had previously completed a project for me in January, so it was a pleasure to know that someone as friendly and skilled as he is was once again taking care of issues in my house. Fingers crossed he's the one to take care of all future project! I continue to be impressed with Hourly Husbands and have no intention of using anyone else if it can be avoided. read more

I rarely write Yelp reviews, but I had to log in just to post a glowing review of Hourly Husbands. In 3+ years as a homeowner, I have learned to have very low expectations of repairmen and all home service professionals. I can count the number of times they have even bothered to show up within their allotted 3-hour window on one hand. But scheduling with Hourly Husbands couldn't have been easier. I found them searching 'DC handyman' on Google and loved their easy online scheduling. And - they are even available on weekends! As the appointment approached, I got slightly concerned that I hadn't received another confirmation on the time since I had scheduled it a week earlier. Well, no need to worry - the service professional arrived right on time. And he performed both services (hanging a coathook, and a more complicated job reattaching some water-damaged molding) wonderfully in about half an hour and with a great attitude (as a single homeowner on the younger side, I often find repairmen - whose time I am paying for! - to be condescending about the simplicity of the tasks I've requested they perform. Not here!) I didn't even have to pay them on the spot - they invoice you later, AFTER they perform the service, through a third-party, and don't keep your credit card on file. A total delight. Let me break it down for you. 1) Scheduling: After I made my initial call to the company, Fatima helped me with every step of the process. She listened to my proposed project, summarized her understanding of it, put it in writing, and then got back to me with potential dates and times. It was incredibly organized and the company kept its word at every step! 2) Pricing: The best part. There are no games here. You pay an hourly rate or a daily rate depending on your needs. You provide and pay for supplies, they provide labor. (After dealing with so many handymen who wouldn't tell me how much something would cost, this was refreshing!!) 3) Quality of labor: I worked with two handymen, Jose and Enrique, and both were top notch. They handled every project with ease. They didn't make errors. They took feedback and made adjustments as projects went on. Ok, as a single lady who is a complete cluster sometimes, I'm always skittish about having people (read: men) in my home, but HH came with a personal review so I went for it. I am THRILLED I did. I had both Joses, who were 1. Insanely professional, 2. Insanely prompt (exactly on time, finished at exactly one hour), 3. Very nice just generally! They fixed everything I had asked for, even tho I forgot to buy the appropriate drain thingy (see: cluster) and also fixed a towel bar in my bathroom I had completely forgotten was broken. Plus! Prior to the appointment I was difficult to get a hold of, and Sarah was unfailingly understanding about it all. What service! If I have any needs for handymen in the future I will be calling Hourly Husbands, plus recommending them to everyone I know. I have to concur with the reviewers who have noted the unresponsiveness and unprofessionalism of this company. They gave me an estimate for a bunch of work at my house. Two handymen came and did part of the work, then charged me the full amount. Eventually, one came back and did a little more work but could not do everything on the list. He also could not fix the LED lighting they had installed to make it dim properly and uniformly. The worker tried using a different dimmer, which appeared to work at first but then stopped. He told me there would be no charge, including for the dimmer. When I contacted the company to get either the balance of the work done or my money back, they played a bait-and-switch game with me and insisted I owed them $65 for a dimmer switch! I have been trying for weeks to get my money back. They tell me they will send check, then never do so. They do not respond to voicemail messages. Do not hire these guys. Beware of this company. I've never had such non-transparent service. I asked for a quote on a very small job (they called it 'tiny") and they said it "might" take up to 12 hours IF it became complex or went wrong. Fortunately, it didn't and it only took only 3.5 hours. But Hourly Husbands claimed it was 11 hours of work! How? Hourly Husband Math: They informed me (afterwards) "we might send you one person or we might send you more - and we will charge for as many people as we send but we won't tell you in advance." (even though I asked). So they charged me for two people although only one person could possibly physically work on the tiny project. They had pictures in advance and saw the miniscule space. The second guy chatted with me the whole time. THE. WHOLE. TIME. (Dennis and I are quite close now.) Most alarming is that Hourly Husbands claimed in writing to have been in my home for 5 hours when I have documentation that they came and left in 3.5 hours. They simply lied and continue to ignore this fact and accused me of "slander" (very professional of them) as I sought to understand their surprise billing practices and padding of my billing hours. Hourly Husband Math: 3.5 = 5. 5 x 2 = 10. Plus one extra hour for "driving around." (seriously) Presto! 3.5 hours equals 11 hours. I'd advise you to get everything in writing, but that's not enough with this company. They will just reinterpret things after the fact. It's unfortunate because I had used this company successfully in the past and even recommended them to others, too. But this time they just went off the rails by: 1. Not being transparent about their intent to send and charge for multiple workers (I would have stopped this had I been informed) 2. Forcing me to pay for the worker who stood around and chatted with me (feel free to ask me more about Dennis and his family) 3. Padding the actual hours in my home. Maybe it's part of our new "alternative facts" world, but honestly... 4. And accusing me of slander for seeking facts and clarification is perhaps their saddest offence. I'm a bit of a do-it-yourselfer when it comes to most repairs, but sometimes I need an extra set of hands who has a bit more experience and better tools (for not a lot of $$). This was one of those cases, and I'm glad I called Hourly Husbands. Within two days of requesting a quote, Humberto came by right on time yesterday afternoon for a relatively simple job on which I'd hit a snag--a screw was stripped on the lid of my old washing machine that I had a replacement part for, and the water valve on the wall was jammed open so that I couldn't disconnect the hose (I've never closed it for years). Within 5 minutes he had the valve loosened with a large adjustable wrench, and then we set to opening the dryer. No sweat. Since he had time left in the initial hour, he helped me replace the part and move the washer into its new resting pan to test it out. The best thing? The price. Compared to other services that quoted an initial $200+ for the first hour, HH quoted $120, and gave me a 10% discount (I believe as a first time customer). I have never had such conscientious work persons in my home that didn't have to worry about the quality of workpersonship or that they might scratch my floors, etc. They were the consummate professionals, did amazing work, and I will definitely be using them again. They were hired to replace a kitchen light for me, and hang a very heavy mirror but that didn't take them long, so I additionally had them move a heavy item for me, install bulbs in my track lighting, and install my new smoke alarm. Significantly, other companies I contacted have not had such a strange response to my request, I did not have to talk to angry wives, and was given a very realistic timeline and price quote. I received excellent service today from Hourly Husbands to fix a shelf which had become detached from the wall. The repairman was named Jose and he took his time and did an excellent job and only charged me $120 which took some time for him to do. He patiently explained to me what he was doing and was friendly and extremely professional. I was very hesitant about letting a stranger into my condo because I have a lot of nice and expensive items in my condo but I would like to recommend Hourly Husbands Handyman Services as the best. Great experience working with them! They were very thorough in explaining their pricing/billing processes when I was scheduling service. The handyman who came to my job, Jose, was absolutely fabulous! He was so detailed and came prepared with everything he needed to complete the job. I especially liked their quote/scheduling process. You just send them some pictures and measurements of what you need done and then they come out with the appropriate materials. I had other companies wanting to come out once to look at everything and then come back again to actually do the work for what was a 2-hour job. Overall: Top notch professionals that deliver quality results with integrity. Projects: Install two sets of window blinds, one curtain rod and two ceiling hooks for plants. Jose was our Handyman and he absolutely rocked it! He was a little late due to his previous appointment running over. However, he apologized immediately and we understand that you can estimate project times but sometimes things come up that cause it to take longer. We had no problem with this and appreciated his sincere apology. The office (Marylois) also kept in constant contact and let us know the status. We were very appreciative of the communication. Additionally, we had at least three schedule slips and she was very accommodating and rescheduled us with no issues each time. Jose explained that he took the time to read my description of the work before coming so he knew exactly what I was requesting. He also wanted ensure he was prepared with the proper tools/equipment. He worked from the moment he entered the door. There was no attempt to "pad the hours" nor was there any time he wasn't engaged in the work. He took zero breaks over the time he was with us. His work ethic and problem solving speaks highly about his integrity and the Hourly Husband company that employs individuals like Jose to represent them. As he worked he explained everything he was doing and his approach to solving some of the challenges. I personally admired him telling me that "saying no" was not an option; he'd find a way somehow to make everything work. Besides being knowledgeable, his professionalism is highlighted by a great personality and friendly demeanor. The work was completed with excellent results and we have no complaints. He also cleaned up everything and made sure it was just the way he found it when he arrived. Everything looks great! If you are in the District and need a Handyman I highly recommend you start here before trying anyone else.
