I rented a car from rent-a-wreck in Jun 2016 for a vacation with my family. The family was flying in from various parts of the united states as well as internationally to all go to this vacation after a long time. The reservation went well and I went to collect the car on the schedule day. When I reached there I find that there are only 1 or 2 options for the minivans that we had booked. I was given the car keys of a minivan and off I went towards the car. As soon as I opened the car, what I found was shocking. The car was in a very bad state. There were all crums, food, debris lying in all the door storage. All seats were heavily stained with liquid spills and was so dusty as if it felt it came from a junk yard. The door mats were stained as if they had never been cleaned in a 7 years. The car was smelling like swamp gutter. And there was much worse damage. You can look at the pictures I have posted. Pictures are worth 1000 words. Not only this, the tires of the car were almost running out of tire tread. The headlights were lose. You can see the pictures. The car felt really unsafe to drive. Especially for someone who is renting it for 5 days and going on a long trip traveling 1000 miles. Externally there were so many dings in the car. Please see attached pictures. I along with my brother immediately returned the keys to the renting office and we asked for our money back. We were told that we need to call a number. We called the number and have been trying to get our money back because we never used the services and that was solely because of the condition the car was in. Wow...i got promises of a car, but I ended up with a truck! Let me back up - I wanted an alternative to the $56/day car rental from Enterprise and thought an older car @$25/day would be fine. However, WAR's owner, Carl, started me with a Ford F150 (with no fuel) with a promise to get me a car the next day. "The truck will be in the car park and the door will be unlocked and the keys in the sun visor." That should've been a sign of a shady operation! The next day came and I was offered a Ford Taurus. But with a hole in the rear fender the size of a football..."it's legal," said Nelson. He jokingly added, "You could drive a car with no doors and it's fine!" I think he was joking. But then the car had no a/c. And it's 90F in NJ with humidity. And this week it hit 109F!! I am a foreigner, but I'm not a sucker. I kept the truck as it was 3pm on a Sunday and all the other places (Thrify across the street) were closed. I thought Rent a Wreck was ironic, but it seems not. The name of the business does not even give it justice to how terrible this place is. I get it...the truck or van is not going to be the most exquisite but when you have a vehicle that looks like it went through the Ferguson riots, it is not so nice. Both side mirrors were completely broken/cracked, windshield cracked, extremely FILTHY inside and a beep noise from the gauges every 10 minutes. I spoke to a gentleman on the phone, and he was extremely rude to me about my reservation. That should have been my first clue that this was not a good establishment. The truck I rented was a piece of crap. The lights barely worked, which was a problem since it was pouring outside. The truck was so old that I thought a piece of it was going to bust off from all the pot holes. I know from the name that I shouldn't expect a brand new car, but I did expect a vehicle with working features. Spend the extra money and just go with a reputable brand like Enterprise or Uhaul. read more

If I could given a big, fat Zero (for customer relations and courtesy), I would. I would. I've been dealing with Rent A Wreck for many years. Small neighborhood business where I knew people by name. The office manager was almost like a friend. Reasonable prices. When I called today I found out Patty, the manager, wasn't there anymore after 20 years. Ok, so a young guy with a robotic toned voice proceeded to take care of me.I wanted the vehicle for the weekend. He said he could give me a Cargo Truck for $75 a day. Mind you, previously it was approximately $30-35 a day, plus tax and basic insurance. 2 days would be under $100, or a little over. And, believe me, their trucks are BEAT UP. We did this many times. I asked why so expensive? So, when I pushed a little he droned he could give me it at $25 a day, plus fifty cents a mile. So I said I'd call him back. After deciding on going ahead I called back to get the hidden costs, etc. and make a reservation with my card. It's like I had to pull everything out of him. Me: Can I use my own insurance? Him: "Maybe, if it is compatible. Me: How much will you be putting on my card today? Him: $50.00, plus $200 deposit (deposit was always$100, but okay), plus tax. Lucky I asked how much tax was. He replied $80, in his pod like monotone voice. That's when it went downhill. I was getting frustrated at this point. He said there was 4 different taxes...but when asked he couldn't tell me what they were. I asked why didn't he tell me that the price would change so drastically with that crazy tax. "You didn't ask". They wanted me to pay up front, and if I cancelled I wouldn't get my money back. I was getting a little upset now. . The Pod tells me he's not Uncle Sam. I tell him more than once that I'm not directing this at him, I'm just frustrated. But, couldn't crack him, his demeanor wouldn't change. He tells me he's not going to continue this conversation. I ask to speak to Carlos, a former Manager who apparently bought the place. Not there. I told this kid from the beginning I was a long term customer, , but obviously he didn't care. I feel I was treated really poorly. I finally said to the emotionless alien that I felt like I was in the Twilight Zone. Probably didn't even know what I was talking about. The worst experience ever!!! Old cars. I was charged a lot of money for a minivan because during the holidays and the car look like a Christmas tree with all the lights on. Called the office multiple times and they did not care at all. Their excuse was that it was during the holidays and the office was close and they did not have another car available. I finally got a different minivan, so they could look into the one I rented and it was even worse. the engine light was on and the car was not running smoothly. Called again, and the service was poor. Don't waste your money. if you want to be save and secure, spend a few more dollars for better cars and service. I will never ever rent from this place nor will recommend it to anyone. read more

I like these folks a lot. I rent from them a couple dozen times a year whenever our business needs an extra truck. It's true that their fleet is cosmetically challenged, but, in 10 years of using their trucks for both local and long distance we've never had a problem. Most importantly though their staff in both East Brunswick ( Patty & Kenya ) and Sayerville ( Carlos ) are always beyond accommodating. We continue to choose Rent a Wreck entirely because of their service even though Enterprise has matched their rates for us. read more

I have strong feeling they are doing multiple booking on same vehicle and trying to get a higher price from other customer. We already made a plan for long drive trip ( 3 family) together for long weekend and now we are in difficulty to find another vehicle because rent a wreck has backed out from their word. It would be great if they honor their word and online reservation I made with them other wise I feel that they collect customer's private and credit information for some other purpose.
