It was a little different project this time around. I contacted them as I needed some stainless steel uprights cut to size for my home gym, and they did that tremendously well. 4.950 stars. An excellent business with great followthrough. Over the past few years, we have noticed that our driveway swing gate was starting to sag and would get caught in our driveway from time to time. We noticed that the top hinge was bending and needed it fixed. After researching multiple businesses, I contacted Republic Doors and Gates and discussed the issue with the owner John. He is extremely kind and knowledgeable, and we discussed multiple possible solutions for the sag, including replacing the hinges vs anchoring the top hinge to give the gate some lift. The decision was made after sending him pictures to keep our current hinges, but to anchor the hinge at the top of the gate. They also replace gate keypads and can install a wifi connected system to your gate if needed, which we don't at this time. John and his crew are busy, but we set an appointment for them to come by two weeks later. I confirmed the appointment the day before and Mike and Hector his welders showed up on time ready to work at the appointed time and were polite and respectful and professional. They straightened the hinge on our stucco gate with a small anchor and all appeared to be well. Unfortunately, a couple of days later, I noticed that the anchor that was placed was too small and the hinge was once again sagging. I texted John with these details over the weekend and he promptly replied that it could be fixed and that he would schedule something with me when he returned to work on Monday. To my surprise they had an opening for Tuesday a few days after install and installed a longer horizontal anchor which should hold for many years to come. I was not charged for the new anchor, which I thought was very fair and honest of him to do. I 100% recommend this business for their expertise and consummate professionalism. Many times, after a business has your money they do not respond or care. John stands behind his work and was very prompt in coming up with a solution after the first solution didn't work. We are looking forward to enjoying our gate for many years to come. I expect that we will need maintenance from time to time or a replacement of parts for the motor etc and John will be on speed dial when the time comes. read more

I don't even know how to review this company. Three stars for three failed gates? We agreed to three new safety gates to match our existing deck fence. What we currently have is powder coat wrought iron black fencing. What he "custom made" for us was black gates that were scratched and chipped everywhere. As I was looking at what his worker brought in, he told me, "oh don't worry, we'll touch it up with paint..that happens in the truck during transport". Two questions; 1) Why do you have zero respect for your client or your product? A responsible company would wrap the "custom" and paid for product in order to protect and deliver it in pristine condition. 2) We agreed to match the powder coat fencing. Powder coating means the gate never chips or scratches, so are you lying on purpose or because you don't know your own product? Before my head exploded, I stepped away to call my spouse and discuss what we wanted to do moving forward. We have a toddler that has figured out how to open the door and go outside, as well as how to get through the baby gates, so this is something that needs to be done ASAP for the stairs. We agreed to move forward and install the chipped incorrect gates now for safety purposes while we waited for the correct ones to be made and installed. I came back to speak with him and tell him what we decided and he was gone, his worker was gone, and his truck was gone. I messaged him apologizing and trying to understand where he was and he wrote back telling me he had gone to figure out how long the powder coat would take. Ok great. As I wait to hear from him, he sends our deposit back via Venmo and texts me apologizing and saying he will no longer do the job for us. One star for utterly failing. Two bonus stars for apologizing for it? We've waited almost an entire month for him to get these gates put in just to have him show up with the wrong product and then refuse to do the real work. Now we have to start over and probably wait another chunk of time with a new company who can get it done right. For me, the most frustrating part is that he has in his possession gates that could keep our child safe, but he refuses to do what's right. Not sure what type of person makes business decisions out of spite knowing it's putting a baby at risk. read more

He made time to come see my gate issues very soon after we spoke, as he knew it was a rental property and needed quick resolve. Let me start by stating "just look at my awesome door!" John delivered on what he promised and some; the photos will explain. So previously I had a guy, which I will not name, replace my worn down wooden gate. It was shady and the guy basically ran with my money and refused to make the proper corrections. Well I knew I couldn't live with the work of the previous guy and decided I would get another estimate to completely replace the shady gate. Called John, he and his crew stopped by to access my gate, we communicated what I was looking to do and what I had gone through. He was focused on making us happy by going over our options ie: size of the materials he would be using, our color, direction of the door swing (something I didn't even consider), just more options than what I could have ever thought of. That let me know he knew what he was doing unlike the last guy. Showed up on the scheduled day of install as promised, the crew went straight to work, performed the welding on spot, got rid of the old materials and left us with something more than what we imagined getting! The guys also provided me with a less expensive solution to replacing two of our weakened fence post which made our fence even more sturdy! This fence may be a small project but it's a huge improvement to our home. Called Monday afternoon and John was here early Tuesday morning and within an hour our car was free and the work was done completely and efficiently. I had my gate installed last year, looks nice and tidy like the other photos on here. Seemed to start sagging which wasn't surprising as the gate is massive but I emailed them and they were responsive to fix the gate within a couple of days. April comes ,called him again for the same problem and just now after a week the gate broke again. In April of 2015 we had Republic Doors and Gates install three exterior gates at our house. Five months later we noticed that two of the gates would not stay closed. We notified John and his crew and they came out and widen one of the holes where the latch bolt connects to the metal post. Later we had the same issue and an extra face plate was installed to decrease the gap between the gates. The problem persisted and we asked for a long term solution and we were told "this is all we can do." On further inspection we found indoor hinges were screwed onto the metal posts and they have already started to sag. In the end we paid a lot of money for two gates that do not serve their main function of staying closed.We do not recommend this company. read more

We had Republic Doors (John and his crew) do a large job for our Pacific Beach home 5 months ago. We had one of SD's biggest fence companies install the exterior gates when we moved in 10 years prior, and now they were falling apart, and hadn't worked correctly for years. We had a large back gate that we added bi-fold sliders, several key-coded entry gates, some repairs to iron railings that had worn out on our back deck, and a custom ironwork & wood railing to prevent our dogs from escaping as well as increase the height of our front stucco half wall. It was complicated custom job, and we wanted to make sure it blended with our home's contemporary design. I had called several top rated Yelp/ Angies List fence contractors out prior, and was not impressed. They either wouldn't respond when they heard what I wanted, or their bid was WAY too high. John gave a fair price, and the work turned out better than we had hoped. It's nice to have gates and fences that work and look beautiful. John worked around our crazy summer schedule and was a pleasure to deal with. I was very impressed by his ability to come up with design suggestions for our custom job, and his ability to communicate his ideas to those of us who aren't design oriented. No one else I had spoken to could come up with a solution to our problems at a reasonable price. In addition he didn't try to upsell us with expensive woods, or items we didn't need. My garage door spring snapped and based on their reviews, I contacted Republic. I spoke to the owner, John, and told me he would try to come, but warned me of his already booked afternoon. Despite his busy schedule John came out to fix my garage. I was extremely thankful for Republic to accommodate me, last minute. Once here, John and his partner replaced the garage spring within 30-45 and was very thorough.
