However, the check-in process was very smooth. The person behind the counter was respectful, efficient, and gave us our room keys quickly. We had to put a card down for a $75 refundable security fee. We did have neighbors all around us which we weren't too happy about, but no one bothered us during our stay. The room was very clean. The bathroom was especially nice. They gave us more than enough toiletries, towels, sheets, pillows, etc. There was a mini fridge, the TV had my friend's name on it as a greeting, and the blow dryer and iron all worked. You could control the AC/heater and it was solid throughout the night; it did not make too much noise. There was breakfast included with our stay. I believe it runs from 6am-10am. They had the usual - egg and cheese omelets, chicken sausage (very considerate of people with dietary restrictions), potatoes, waffle maker, cereal, yogurt, fruit, drinks, oatmeal etc. They did have coffee and tea at a tale in the lobby area. It seemed like the water dispenser was not working, but the front desk was giving out water bottles instead. There were plenty of tables and they were well spaced apart. I think we paid $110 a night, which is good for the area and the attention we were given. They do have parking all around the building. When we first arrived, we found very convenient parking, but after returning from dinner, options were less great. It is a couple minute drive away to attractions like Thames St., Cliff Walk, Bird Sanctuary, beaches, libraries, etc. and some food is walking distance away.

We were out most of the day exploring Newport and when we returned we greeted at the front desk with no warning that there was a known significant health and safety threat. Since it was late at night, I jumped immediately in the shower and was horrified to find that dark brown water was pouring all over me, so severe that it stained my skin brown. My partner went to the front desk to alert the staff and was told they were already aware that there was a break in the water line, causing heavy metals (lead, copper, etc) and debris to come pouring out of all water lines in the hotel. The front desk was packed with people who had faced similar shock. There were no notices on doors, no emails, no texts sent. There was a single flyer left at the desk (out of the way, a location people would only go to AFTER they have a problem). Meanwhile, children were playing in the pool, people had been drinking from the tap, and people like myself were in the bath/shower when they became doused with heavy metals. We were told that we only had to run the water for 20 minutes and we "should be fine". We were told this AFTER myself and others had been dangerously exposed to heavy metals. There was no housekeeping on staff to clean up the heavy metal spills. Additionally, there was no housekeeping staff to run the water and tend to the messes created in our rooms when we were gone all day. We had to buy or own water bottles (which were not cheap) in order to be able to even brush our teeth at night. There was also no managerial staff on site to address the issue, so we were told to hang on until the morning. When we attempted to talk to the manager, we were told that there was nothing more to say or do regarding the matter as it was an "act of God." The lack of accountability and emergency preparedness at this hotel was disgusting. We did not have any access to a clean bathroom, clean water, or safe food while staying at this inhospitable stay. There was inadequate staff on site to deal with the significant health hazard at hand. Not a single proactive measure was taken. This hotel also CHOSE not to install infrastructure that could have mitigated the incident, such as building filtration systems. The cost of emergency disasters and "acts of God" is covered through the hotels insurance; health and safety risks can be reduced with proper emergency response protocols, clear communication, and appropriate infrastructure. This outrageously priced hotel chose not to partake in any of those strategies. I have been in communication with the escalation team at Hilton numerous times since the incident has occurred. Each time they have informed me that the managerial team has reported that proactive measures were taken and we were notified of the response. I asked for copies of this "notification" but was told that none exists. Numerous times I have suggested signage on doorways, email or text notifications, or having designated representatives at the front desk. Each time I have been told that these measures do not exist. When I asked for a summary of the response to significant health and safety hazards, I was told that "the only policy on place for health and safety risks is that the general manager must be contacted and it is addressed at their discretion." I have been waiting weeks for a call back from the general manager. I asked what the response is from Hilton if this manager chooses not to act and they said there is no protocol in place in the event that the case is dismissed. SAVE YOUR MONEY AND GO ELSEWHERE

I thought I new what I was getting myself into by staying at Bay Willows Inn, and I was pleasantly surprised that it was better than I expected. Our first phone call was with a lovely woman, who has a pretty thick accent. There were times that I didn't quite understand what she was saying, but really that is on me. She was so pleasant that I found it endearing. Upon arrival the Inn looks dated, but you can tell from the plants that they enjoy keeping up the location. Everything outside is old, but in great condition. So far it is better than I expected. When I checked in the dude at the counter was great. We filled out the stuff, processed my card, and then I got a goodie bad with some fruit, chips, granola bars, and bottled water. It was a plain paper bag with Bay Willows Inn written in sharpie. Is it a professionally printed bag that obviously costs an arm and a leg? No. It is a project of love that is absolutely adorable? Yes! He also said they don't do breakfast, but gave us 4 gift cards to the Dunkin Donuts across the street! Awesome! The room is just like the rest of the place. It is a little dated, but it seems clean. Visible surfaces are clean, floor is vacuumed, the shockingly pink tile in the bathroom is scrubbed. The ultra bright vanity mirror above the sink is spotless. The window unit air conditioning was set to 65, and pumping away. Everything is way better than expected. We had just driven 15 hours to get here, and the first thing we did was jump in the shower. Water pressure wasn't top notch, but the water was hot and the shower was massive. It was not one of those tub inserts that you get at the chain places, but a hand tiled shower with a 6 inch lip and a floor drain. I'm a big dude, and I'm used to rubbing my shoulders against the curtain in hotel showers, but the shower stall in this place is massively huge and awesome. I love it. I also love the childlike curtain in the bathroom with the boats. The TV is small, and awkwardly placed, but we didn't come here to lock ourselves in the room and watch netflix. The wifi didn't work when we got here, but I requested that he cycle the router, and everything is up and running. I asked where could get craft beer, and he gave me a great suggestion. At the end of this diatribe what you can walk away from is this. Bay Willows Inn is a labor of love. They don't have Hilton money to do inconsequential updates, but they care so much more than any chain hotel manager every would. Everything is dated, but wonderful. Everything is older, but loved. Everything is home spun, but so much more meaningful. I am so glad we booked this stay.

Luckily the gentleman who was managing that night (I'm sorry I forgot his name due to all the stops we made), took my reservation over the phone, greeted us when we got there and made us feel welcome. Stayed in the King 3 and loved the historic feel of the place, comfy bed, sound proof glass in the room helped keep the noice down from the highway nearby and the breakfast the next morning was the best we had on our trip. We parked in the front and unloaded the cars easily. We did not use valet, the Marriott lot was $48 a night. Walking to the lot next door took about 2 minutes. The lobby is spacious, clean and very pretty. There's a water machine with flavored waters. Front desk staff are very professional and friendly. Valet guys are all nice and open the doors for you 98% of the time. With the daily destination fee, you also get 2 free tickets per room to the sailing museum or a vineyard 15 mins away (Sailing museum is free on Wednesdays). Had I known the museum was free Wednesdays, I would have chose the vineyard tickets instead. You also get $20 per room to use at the bar/restaurants as well as 2 bikes to rent. We checked into connecting balcony rooms. The rooms were clean but the balcony doors were hard to open. You have to pull it back really hard before unlocking it. The beds were comfortable. There are no microwaves but I called in to request one for the room. The first night I went to skiff bar to order some food and use our 2 $20 food credits. I ordered oysters and coconut shrimp. The oyster appetizer was terrible... the oysters flesh was tiny, totally not worth it. The next morning we had the hotel buffet for $32 a head. Omelet station was good. Standard breakfast items, view was good. We really only ate there for the view. Our waitress was barely around. Hotel is at a great location. Very close to the wharf and also right across from a small aquarium. The balcony was a nice place to chill, overall the hotel wasn't crowded. It's also very safe because you need to swipe a keycard to get to the hotel rooms. Best part of staying here was a pool table in the skiff bar. While waiting for my food, I just played two games by myself. I usually stay at Hiltons but I chose this Marriott because of the location and views. Glad I made this decision. The lobby, rooms, and common areas are always clean, which we really appreciate. The staff is great, and they were even able to check my family in before I arrived, which made things super easy. Nice pool, gym, and sauna. We haven't tried dinner there yet, but we love the on-property breakfast buffet. For the evenings, there's a great bar and a little side area for the kids (pool table and some other games), which is a nice touch. We'll definitely be back--see you again soon.

Reception staff were very helpful and professional. A vending machine room is off the lobby with beverages and snacks. Coffee service is in the lobby. Room rates range from around one thirty a night to one forty five for a 'kitchen' room. The back of the Inn faces the water looking toward the island where much of the base is located. Bicycle parking is located in the large parking lot. A drive up road leads to the entrance for drop off, but is seperate from parking so you have to back track to enter the parking lot. Several handicapped spots are in the first row of parking and a sidewalk leads to the entrance. Easy to find, it's the first building on your right after the gate. Happy travels.
