To be clear, we did not stay at this Inn. Yet. We went in to get some info. So here goes. The lobby is beautiful with high ceilings and comfortable seating. Reception staff were very helpful and professional. A vending machine room is off the lobby with beverages and snacks. Coffee service is in the lobby. Room rates range from around one thirty a night to one forty five for a 'kitchen' room. The back of the Inn faces the water looking toward the island where much of the base is located. Bicycle parking is located in the large parking lot. A drive up road leads to the entrance for drop off, but is seperate from parking so you have to back track to enter the parking lot. Several handicapped spots are in the first row of parking and a sidewalk leads to the entrance. Easy to find, it's the first building on your right after the gate. Happy travels. read more

We was fortunate to get two nights while we was visiting the Rhode Island and Massachusetts area this past weekend. There is a huge parking lot on site, and they can accommodate small and large vehicles. The hotel has elevators and is completely handicapped accessible. This hotel has all the accommodations of other hotels. The rooms were very nice and extremely comfortable. Their wifi was very fast and reliable, which was great for doing any work. We were in building 172 room 202 for my husband's school after Making Commander in the Navy. Our stay was for 2 weeks, and we had the most amazing room attendant. Our thanks to ANNIE who went above and beyond we always had fresh towels clean bedding coffee and other amenities we always stocked, we never had to ask for anything, she was always on top of it. Great place to stay for the price (~$100/night). Base access is required to stay here. Staff is very friendly and facilities were clean and well kept. I previously stayed in bldg 442 and it was in need of renovation, but on this stay I was in bldg 172 and was VERY impressed with the queen suite rooms. Stayed at the new NGIS in Newport and it was so much more comfortable than staying at the chalet for the clean bedsheets alone! The things I did not like were no tub if I wanted to take a bath. The military members would walk over from the other berthing and just party in the grill outdoor area. If we wanted to just use the grill and have a nice dinner outside we were in the midst of loud, obnoxious, swearing and drunk students. And lastly the room was only cleaned on Saturday and Wednesday so after a long day of training you just want to come to a clean room, nope. I should get a discount for being my own housekeeper. read more

Stayed here for 2 nights over New Year's Eve/Day. I was given a room in Bldg. 444, which had quite a few windows still missing, an old facility. Other lodging buildings appeared to be in much better condition, either newer or completely renovated. Still, a good room, although a little cool and somewhat difficult to warm up. The room was spacious, well kept, clean and orderly. Relatively quiet, as I was in the only occupied room in the 108-room building. My room was tastefully appointed, allowing for a flat screen wall-mounted TV with attached DVD / VCR player. Apartment-sized refrigerator, microwave and coffee maker, clock radio. An ironing board (with iron) located in the large walk-in closet, along with a spare blanket. A small work desk, and a dresser for storing your clothes provided all the comforts of home. A table on both sides of the bed allowed for a couple table lamps. The bathroom area was ample sized, with a full tub. Free internet, free limited laundry facilities located in the basement of the building. read more

This place makes the "no tell motel" look like the Four Seasons. Some are closed for asbestos removal and other "unknown" problems according to the manager; imagine all the years guests stayed unknowingly. One of the NGIS buildings is closed for structural issues. The room I got was adjacent to the construction. There is zero security on the building to get in aside from the base entry point. Lighting is poor outside the building and an older woman looked totally spooked as I dragged my luggage from the school parking lot across the street. The heat was off when I entered the austere room and temp in 50s. The iron blew out black soot like substance when the steam feature turned on... Thanks by the way NGIS for ruining my uniform shirt. The shower trickles out with the pressure of a three week old kids balloon. So plan an extra minutes to try to rinse out soap with the lowest pressure I've seen in lodging. Oh and the internet.... Totally non existent for building 443 on second floor ... Guess I won't be getting any work done this trip. The bed at least was comfortable... That is until the middle of the night cause the heat never came back on until I got up and moved around the room. Motion sensor to save pennies is apparently worth not keeping guests comfortable enough to get a solid nights sleep. All this can be yours too. And for all this the command saves about $21 off the normal per diem rate. Years of neglect and some fictitious notion of saving at the expense of guests health and comfort? They should get out of the hotel management business because NGIS Newport is achieving it's goal of setting the bar low... Nearly subterranean. -------------------------------------------------- 4:30 AM the internet service was restored and at that hour, the low demand had fast service. ======================================== I did want to add one more thing. On check-in, my experience was different than some of the other reviews. On this visit, the manager and desk staff were hospitable, demonstrating good customer service upon receipt. read more

Need to up the overall rating here. A number of the low ratings are clearly from before the renovation or new building (not sure which one). The newly opened 5 or 6-story building just inside the gates is beautiful. Essentially, a commercial hotel. Our room was excellent, clean, comfortable. Great location. Newport is very expensive so it's nice to have a place for $100 a night. Stayed over on a Saturday and couldn't have asked for more. read more

I love the Navy Gateways, and this one on the Newport base was definitely up to standards! When everyone else is paying $120 + for a hotel room, we stay at the Gateway, get all the same amenities, and only pay $56 per night! You really can't beat it! The Newport location had everything just as good or better than a regular hotel: flat screen TV, microwave, refridgerator, free wi-fi, view of the water, extremely comfortable bed, vending machines, laundry services, the list goes on! The room itself was a standard sized room, totally adequate for two people, with a queen sized bed that was one of the most comfortable I have ever slept on! The linens on the bed were also very nice, a down comforter with a pillow top underneath! Also came with lots of pillows which is always a plus! The building we stayed in, #443, was much like other Gateways, rough on the outside (due to it being an old barracks building), however renovated and new on the inside! The rooms are very clean, with ample bathroom space and a large closet. Has plenty of dresser space as well, with a desk and chair to set your laptop up on. Wi fi was spot on and we never had a problem with bad reception or anything, which was definitely a plus. Maid service was friendly and attentive, and we always had enough towels and soaps and such. Overall the Navy Gateway Newport was amazing, and we won't hesitate to stay there again in a heartbeat if we are ever in the area in the future. Had a wonderful experience and would recommend it to anyone that has base privileges....definitely 5 stars!! read more

Awful rude people work here who can't or won't clean your room, from needless complacations when your trying to check in, to having to clean your room before you go to bed, to getting the call the day after you leave to come back and do the housekeepers job or get charged 200$ BWEARE THE IRONS WILL RUIN YOUR WHITES. Low water pressure, and a thin layer of dust over the entire room. Perfect for people who love pain. Terrible for everyone else. read more

For a person who usually changes rooms as soon as I check in, I was pleasantly surprised. Most government lodging that I have experienced is not that great, the room was good. No stains on carpet or furniture. Bathroom was very clean. read more

Beware the gateway is no longer allowing those on personal leave to stay here. They are instead trying to force everyone to spend twice as much money on an inferior room at the Chalet. The "gentleman" at the desk hung up on me when i tried to alter my reservation. I recommend staying at the Best Western right off base instead. read more

Okay, so I have stayed at the Navy Gateway tons of times, both for short term stays and for longer durations. I have RARELY been disappointed in what they have to offer here. No, it is not a luxury 5 star resort with a concierge and room service, but for about $50/night..I really can't complain about that. The rooms are a good size, and are pretty well kept. The housekeeping staff is ALWAYS friendly and courteous, and have always addressed any needs I had while staying. Sometimes, when there is a drill weekend, or any reason for the base to be stocked full of military personnel, the showers can be quite chilly in the morning. Good news though! Once they all go to work, the showers typically get hot in no time. Building 444 was the only exception to that, however, it has been torn down..taking its cold showers with it (and no air conditioning). Another huge perk? Free laundry! I don't know why..but I think that this is an amazing feature for a hotel to have..and maybeeee I pack more in my suitcase when I come because I know that I will have access to laundry facilities. Wifi in pretty much ever building..sometimes it can be spotty and take awhile..but..I mean..worse things have happened. For the cost, I have absolutely no complaints about the amenities at NGIS! read more

ABE POORE works for Navy Gateway and suites, NGIS and Unaccompanied housing. ABE POORE is a thief, steals confidence in unaccompanied housing, provides false information about reason he enters rooms and is guilty of deformation in regards to Resident. His authority abused, accessing without reasonable justification and obvious disregard for personal privacy, safety of Resident. As a resident that has moved a total of three times since at Newport unaccompanied housing, two of those times I moved myself (while in a cast). ABE POORE stated in conversation 29JULY2015 that he is aware of my private medical history; although he has made my stay at all the rooms I have stayed in under his management VERY uncomfortable. ABE POORE indicated as having told a previous roommate of mine (which forced me to live in the living room), that I filed a complaint against him. This matter did not concern him, was false and resulted in my hospitalization that same day. Agreement and medical specifications outline pertinent accommodation of personal space in my case. ABE POORE is well aware of this even though the first two rooms placed in, included a roommate. This has resulted in me being hospitalized twice. ABE POORE clearly discriminate against me and single-handedly deface any good name, ability of Unaccompanied Housing potential for a pleasant experience for resident. I am disgusted of my experience with Housing in Newport and ashamed someone who represents not only the navy but also housing can continually keep his job with impunity. When I first moved to Newport I lived in my car close to a week before forced to move In with a roommate and entered up hospitalized as a result. ABE POORE has falsely communicated to my command my room was "trashed." When confronted his strangely cavalier response was " I apologize (they) told me its trashed. This is confusing because for one I did not have a room entry form stating there would be an inspection and for two he is not in my command and shouldn't be conducting Independent inspections without consulting with my command, having reasonable intent. Next, he stated "well I just needed to check for extra bedding." In the suite I stay in in building 688, there is an empty room, a suitemate with no Roomate and room that has two roommates and myself with no Roomate. NONE of the residents in my suite received an inspection form, room entry sheet during the time in which ABE POORE reported to my command my room was "trashed."  After having a former LPO check my room, it was clear the information ABE POORE communicated was false and out right lie. read more

When I originally checked in to this establishment, I booked a queen room suite. My wife was going to meet me at the gateway inn and she neglected to tell me she was bringing in her dog until after I made reservations. I went immediately to the front desk and informed them of this situation. I did not get the name of the Asian lady working the desk, but she was working during the day of Friday, 15 Jul 2016; she made my experience horrible. I informed her of the situation and she stated: "We do not have any pet friendly rooms available. Do not bring your pet into this room or else we will charge you $150 extra for cleaning fees. I am also making a note on here [pointing to the computer] to let housekeeping know you have a dog so don't try it. I also am not giving you a refund back since this situation happened after payment." I then told her "I will talk with my wife and figure things out." I was very disgusted with the service she provided. After speaking with my wife over he phone we decided it was best to lose the $75 and book with a hotel somewhere else. I returned to the front desk and thankfully Brittany was at the front desk. I told her of the current situation and that we were going to have to check out of our room. She gave me a refund back and informed me of dog friendly hotels in the area. She is the only reason why I would consider coming back to the Gateway Inn and Suites in Newport, RI. I don't recall ever being treated so unprofessionally by a hotel employee until I encountered Brittany's coworker. I would highly suggest this establishment retrain the staff on customer service. read more

I'm rating this high because of cleanliness. I will forgo a larger room elsewhere if a smaller room is cleaner & this was VERY clean. It had a nice Keurig coffee maker with free morning coffee. a nice small refrigerator. a nice small microwave, clean bathroom and nice view of the bridge. We spent hardly any time in the room except to sleep. What more could you ask for? It only fits two but clean, clean. read more

New bedding and sheets. Great maintenance and cleaning staff, however my room's toilet didn't work, and the manager of the facility refused to fix it. Also, there is no working internet at this location. The heat also went out when it was 15 degrees outside. This location is substantially hindered by the manager, Rachel, that takes problems like no heat when it's 15 degrees out, no hot water, or nonworking plumbing as "unfixable." These major issues are the problem of the person paying for the room. I was woken at 6:30 in the morning by her to tell me there was nothing that would be done to fix my toilet that hadn't worked since my arrival. I was there for ten weeks and my first month was spent having to flush my toilet with a plunger every time. What I experienced was the type of manager that lashes out at others when made aware of deficiencies, the type looking for excuses rather than solutions. This was the worst housing experience of my life. read more
