Review for the hotel accommodations…read more When you visit Sturbridge, you know antiquity will be part of the theme. Olde buildings, historical relics, period clothing- all the stuff of retro-tourism. And when you stay at a place called the Public House, you know the theme will be continued ling after the time at the Sturbridge Villiage is spent. It's an after-hours continuation of your historical proclivities, and for many, a welcome extension. The main house smells like fireplace, has wonderful construction materials, lead windows, exposed beams- you are staying in an important place that echoes with hundreds of years of conversations and ales. However, book through hotels.com, and your 1750 time warp lands you oddly in 1980. No main inn to be found; rather, you pioneer your wagon to the remotest of the motel complex where nary 2 other weary travelers have been sequestered, and in this desolation you unlock your door to Nancy Reagan, the Bee Gees, and ET. 1980 greets you with mismatched antique-ish furnature, tiled bathtubs, and plug-in electronic clock radios. Curtains look like wallpaper from Williamsburg- replete with pioneer hunting scenes- and carpeting is an odd green color. See, subjecting yourself to a historical setting has backfired, and though antiquey, it isn't anything other than a mishmash of castaway artifacts, seeking a home in the farthest of corners of the Public House complex. And this is your dilemma...you wanted this, and this you have received. Women in their 49's in 1980 would have swooned into the arms of their lovers, to be surrounded by such immersion early Americana! To be concise, the furthest block of rooms is a woefully outdated historical remnant that refuses to modernize. To the credit or historical preservationalists, it is clean, perfectly functional, and has good water pressure and comfortable mattresses and pillows. The AC may be a little noisey- possibly in an attempt to drown out semi-trucks on the nearby highway, rolling over the rumble strips along the white line- but it blows cold, and the room doesn't have odors. It is like the frilled tuxedo with bellbottom paints in your grandfathers closet; still functional and clean, but slightly outdated. And this is the conundrum when staying in a historical hotel: you asked for it. We did have a good night at the Public House, and the delicious breakfast of baked goods in the Bakery the next morning was appreciated. Coffee cake and coffee were a good combination before taking ye olde family back on the road!

I fell in love with the Spanish garden and knew immediately that I wanted to have my wedding here…read more Unfortunately, the venue itself was the highlight of an otherwise disappointing experience. Communication was a significant issue throughout the planning process. Dennis was often difficult to reach, and phone calls frequently went unanswered or were not returned in a timely manner. As a bride trying to coordinate an important event, this added unnecessary stress. I stayed at the property the night before the wedding so I could begin setting up. I was surprised that despite being present, the family appeared uninvolved and offered no assistance while preparations were underway. The interior of the home felt dated and had a noticeable mildew odor. As someone with allergies, I found it particularly uncomfortable. We were also told that the venue worked exclusively with a single caterer, leaving us with no flexibility in our catering choice. Unfortunately, the food did not meet our expectations, and several guests told us they were denied additional servings when they asked for seconds. That was especially disappointing and embarrassing on what should have been a joyful day. The garden is beautiful, but based on our overall experience with communication, accommodations, and catering, I would not choose this venue again.

It was great…read moreexperience and the original house was built by one of my ancestors which made things even more special. The Inn is oriented towards hosting weddings, but the hosts, Dennis and Rosemary, go out of their way to make "regular" guests feel welcome, including providing a "self serve" pantry in case a late night refreshment is needed. In the morning, we had a great breakfast more akin to a bed and breakfast than a full-scale hotel. Two bits of advice: 1. Call ahead to make sure the Inn will be open - the Inn is closed sometimes in the winter and there might be nobody around. 2. I think the prices on the website are somewhat dated so confirm things when you call.
