One of the nicest restaurants we've visited in a long time. We loved dinner so much, we went back a month later for brunch (and this is a 1 hour drive for us). Our favorite dishes so far: bbq shrimp, hanger steak, brick oven bread, hearth shrooms, salad with grilled chicken, crawfish queso, strawberry French toast (brunch), bread pudding with raspberry sorbet. Also the service and hospitality is great in a way that shouldn't feel rare but somehow is: prompt nice professional people and not pretentious. read more

This was the second time we ate at the restaurant; our first visit was around the holidays. The last time, we were seated at the bar where the cooking was visible, which wasn't very romantic. I decided to give it another shot, but I ended up disappointed. There were four young women in the corner, and they were quite loud, only getting louder as they drank more. We recently dined at Restaurant 1796 during their advertised Wednesday steak night in April, but unfortunately, upon arrival, we were informed it had been canceled. We decided to stay and dine inside, and were seated promptly, which we appreciated. The restaurant itself is absolutely beautiful, and the grounds are just as impressive--truly a lovely setting. However, the dining experience did not match the atmosphere. The menu was very limited, with only a few options to choose from, and the pricing was quite high. I ordered the Blue Crab spaghetti, and my husband ordered the ribeye. When the food arrived, my dish was cold and had to be sent back. My husband's steak was very thin and small, especially surprising given the $70 price point. It was reminiscent of something you might expect from a much more casual chain like Bonanza Steakhouse, not a restaurant of this caliber. We are not opposed to paying for high-quality food--we travel often and have dined at many high-end restaurants--but this experience did not meet expectations. Just 40 minutes north of Baton Rouge, located at the historic Myrtles Plantation, Restaurant 1796 is a delicious gem that adds to the culinary jewels in our area. I first made it here for a rehearsal dinner - they did an amazing job with both food and service, they were easy for the family to work with, and it was the perfect evening for all. Most recently, we celebrated a birthday with a large crowd. We were tucked in a back room that was cozy with just a few other tables. Joe stole the show with his amazing suggestions, impeccable service, and infectious smile. I don't think anyone could have done a better job with our group. First, the cocktails were creative and very tasty. I had both a bloody mary and mango salsarita. My friends enjoyed bottomless mimosas (which Joe legit did not let the bottom be seen), old fashioned, and a few mocktails. No one was disappointed. We ordered just about all the apps from boutique oysters to hush puppies, peppers (from the gardens on site), deviled eggs, St Bruno bread, and some other delicious items. We also ordered the famous brussels sprouts and cauliflower dishes, which were removed for a slight period of time from the menu, but they have made a triumphant return. For my main course, I ordered the redfish tacos - a more seasonal dish with the freshest fish and delicious slaw topping. Others enjoyed steak, truffle mac, the strawberry french toast, and other dishes. I don't think anyone was disappointed. I can truly say, Restaurant 1796 went above and beyond to make our meal a truly memorable experience. Now this is what bottomless brunch should be. Our waiter never let our glasses get close to empty and Orange juice to bubbles ratio was ‍ . He was attentive without being pushy, and let us take our time and socialize throughout the meal. He was quick with suggestions and they were very good suggestions at that! My recommendations: 1. The Brussels sprouts - holy shit these were great. Crispy, flavorful, every person at the table LOVED them. 2. The cauliflower- this was the best cauliflower I've ever had. I don't know how they do it but I understand why people rioted when they took it off the menu temporarily. Perfection. A must order. Again, everyone loved it at the table. 3. The st Bruno sourdough 4. The snack trio - I love this idea and it gave everyone a nibble. It was the deviled eggs, hush puppies, and shishito peppers when we visited. Delicious. 5. The redfish tacos - these were also delicious. After all the app sharing it was the ideal amount of food, fresh with a crunchy charred flour tortilla and cole slaw on top of the redfish that was cooked just right. 6. I hate a white table cloth restaurant, the staff and other diners are always so snooty and make the entire experience so uncomfortable. This is not the place for that!! The moment we walked in the door there was an instant comfort. The staff were so friendly and fun! You can tell they enjoy it also! The food and drinks were spectacular and this place is gorgeous inside and out!! My fiancé informed me that we'll be making this trip yearly because of this restaurant! Had a nice dinner at 1796 after our tour at Myrtle's Plantation. Rather than getting big plates, we opted for doing small plates to taste the variety of foods which in some cases were nicely unique. I started out with a grilled caesar salad that came with crispy cornbread crumbs and pepperoncini peppers. While the cornbread crumbs worked well, the acid of the peppers with the dressing was a bit too much and overpowered the nice balance of the tangy dressing with bread crumb combo. 4 stars Next we ordered the fried rabbit livers. I have had a lot of liver in my day but never a rabbit liver. This was fantastic! Lightly breaded you really had nice big bite sized pieces of liver server on top of mustard greens with a pepper jelly sauce. This was great. Super tender, no heavy liver flavor but a nice mild flavor. 5 stars The fire roasted Brussels sprouts with Gochujang aoli and picked red onions were good but over salted. A few pieces were way too salty but take away the salt and the sprouts were delicious. Leaving the salt out of my evaluation this is a solid 4 stars. The final dish was the the Hearth Ribs with white bama bbq sauce. The ribs were very tender and sauced perfectly (not too heavy) and almost fell off the bone but not quite. 5 ribs for a side was a nice size portion. 4 stars Finally for dessert I had the Peanut Butter Mousse with Strawberry Compote and Bacon. The Peanut Butter and Jelly concept is sort of the rage in many dishes now but in this case, it didn't work for me. The bacon and strawberry did not mix well with whip cream and peanut butter. I would of left out the strawberry and added just smokey bacon or leave out both. The mousse alone could stand on it's own very well so I think adding to it actually detracts from making this dish really shine for me but I am sure others may love it. 4 stars Service was very good and I would definitely recommend going here for a menu that is unique and different with numerous choices for both small and large plates. 4 stars read more

Amazing experience. Let me first say, I don't write reviews usually unless I was very impressed. It was my wife and I's wedding anniversary and we did lunch and went on the tour after. When we were seated there was a hand written card from the restaurant wishing us a happy anniversary and we got complimentary champagne and desert (which was delicious). The restaurant itself is beautiful and really elegant. You can tell there was a lot of thought put into it. It was lunch, so my wife and I split a few small plates (Brie dip and tuna dip) and had salads. Everything was delightful. We will definitely come back and for a dinner. It's a MUST try! Then we got fried rabbit liver, so yummy. Has a mild liver taste but so tender. I also love their take on a caesar salad but I like light breadcrumbs. For entrees we had the ribeye and redfish. They cook fish to perfection, it's always so juicy and flavorful. For dessert we had the marshmellow strawberry fluff. The ambiance of this restaurant is its highlight. The restaurant is cozy and homey. The outside is beautiful and has great grounds you can walk off your meal on. I went ahead and mostly ordered small plates which included the corn bread and rabbit livers. The livers were okay but nothing special. The slaw was its highlight. I want to start by saying the service was EXCEPTIONAL. Tyler was our server and he was so INCREDIBLE! The reason for my low rating is the food. I ordered the Ribeye and it was 1/2 inch thick with little to no flavor. My mom had the pork chops which were good, but the sides and 'mustard caviar' were not the best complimentary sides. My boyfriend had the lamb chops, which he said was incredible, but the truffle polenta had zero truffle flavor and beets fell short. My dad had the redfish and he said it was 'just okay.' Not to mention, all of our meals were lukewarm. Besides the AMAZING service, we were all very disappointed, especially with a bill north of $375. I went with a 3 star rating, although I'd give 5+ for Tyler's service and 2 for the food. read more

Alright, the ghost of The Myrtles Plantation has caused me to lose this review twice. TWICE! I hope the third time really is the charm! My friends and I are starting at The Myrtles Plantation. Because we had a long day of driving, we decided to rest on site. But Lord, it was so good, we decided to eat here two nights in a row. If you know me, you know it's never do that, because there are so many places to review, so little time. NIGHT ONE: Tonight was a total score- wine by the glass was 1/2 price. I started with a La Toretta Moscato from Veneto, Italy. It was nice without the bubbles being overbearing. Then I ordered the Omen Pinot Noir from Ava, Oregon. It was slightly oaky and full-bodied. My friends ordered the Lola Pinot Noir from the North Coast of California. It is lighter abs but oaky, but extremely fruity. We started our with the Fried Rabbit Liver. It came with an Alabama White Barbecue sauce. It had a minuscule kick with mega flavor. This was a truly amazing dish. The liver was light and did not taste like the traditional liver at all. I ordered the duck with a blueberry pomegranate sauce, a hoecake and asparagus. The duck was cooked medium to medium-well, and if I had had my druthers, it would have been medium-rare to medium. But the mixture of the meat and fruit was an excellent match. As for the hoecake it was wonderful. A hoecake is essentially a cornmeal pancake. This was perfection, crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. But the asparagus, my word, it was the thinnest, most tender asparagus I'd ever had. My friend ordered a 16 ounce ribeye and he ordered it medium rare. Is dat they cooked it more medium, but he was happy. Another friend ordered the bread pudding and I had a bite and it was sublime. They do make their own ice cream and/ or sherbet EVERY DAY, and it was perfect. DAY TWO: Tonight, sadly, there wasn't any 1/2 price wine, so I concentrated on the mixed drinks. First, I had Hester's Honey, which is vodka, honey, amaretto, mint and water. I think it's totally cool that they aren't being pretentious by having it be distilled or profited water, but simply water. It was very good, but thick. I didn't really like the texture of the thickness, but I loved the kick and flavor, Then I had the Moe Berry Martini. This is vodka, St. Germaine, BlackBerry syrup, lemon juice and lavender. This lovely. Great flavors, good the nose and the eyes, with the appropriate kick. I ordered the crab and corn cake. It was very good. The ribeye was on sale today and another friend got it. I tried it and it would melt in your mouth. The scallops potatoes had a robust taste and were yummy. Then for dessert I had panna cottage the flavor was delicate and served with mixed berries This restaurant is epic. read more

Wow! Was in St Francisville for our 1 year anniversary and the wife suggested we come here. Always trust your significant others because she was on the money with this place. We were able to sit at the chefs table where honestly it was the best seat in the house. Everything is grilled using the hearth which just adds to the ambiance to the establishment. I ordered the 8 oz filet, which cooked on the hearth, was fantastic! My wife had the gnocchi which was handmade that very morning. We throughly enjoyed the food, but we really enjoyed the staff. Took the drive on May 1st during the Coronavirus Apocalypse. They're offering window pick up and seating in the courtyard area at this time. The limited menu is only one option per day. They day I went was a ribeye, mashed potatoes and Brussels sprouts. It was served in a styrofoam box with plastic utensils. Liquor was also being served. No masks but everyone was at a safe distance. Great to be out. Lots of old school southern ambience. Should be noted that the at the of this writing the main house is not open but the grounds are. If you need a drive it's very beautiful and peaceful at the Myrtle's Plantation. I didn't plan on eating at the restaurant that day but I'm glad I was still around when it opened at six. Be aware that the gnats are out full force. Lots of customers were asking for bug spray which is sold at the window but not given out freely. Spray some on before you come but don't let that stop you. I've never been to Restaurant 1796 during 'normal' times but definitely intend to based on this experience. We heard great things from friends about this place and made our reservations well in advance. Planning a tour of the Myrtles beforehand, we arrived right after and were immediately seated. tables are spaced appropriately for social distancing and the decor and smell of fires cooking the food made our dinner experience very woodsy. We started with cocktails and a bottle of wine from their extensive menu and opened with a few appetizers, including the Smoked Tuna Dip, Fried Rabbit Livers, and Nashville Hot Cauliflower. Everyone sampled and while all were excellent, the rabbit and tuna dip were favorites. The Caesar is a big, flavorful salad with smoked Romaine and we split one between two people. For entrées, we had to sample from each others plates as each and every dish on the menu sounded amazing. Blackened Redfish, Oysters Florentine, Shrimp & Grits, Duck, and the Hearth Burger all made their way to the table and not a leftover remained. We saved room for dessert and shared Bread Pudding, Buttermilk Panna Cotta, and Peach Galette and washed it down with a cup of the best coffee we've enjoyed in some time. The service for the entire experience was exceptional. From the moment we walked through the door, we were made to feel at home. If you're looking for a truly exceptional meal and happen to be in St. Francisville, do what you can to eat dinner here. You won't regret it. read more

This is definitely worth your buck! My boyfriend and I ate here before going on the Myrtle Evening Mystery Tour, and it was just an amazing experience. The food was delicious and the drinks were exquisite! For starters, we chose the cauliflower and bacon - BOMB! The crab cake melted in our mouths. I chose rib eye which was delicious and had this unique butter that was drizzled on top. Mouth watering! My bf got a salad...looked fresh! The cocktails....oh boy! Where do I begin. You must try them and be sure to ask for the additional cocktail list. Now the most important part - desserts!!! Not a fan of stuffed churros, so we got another dessert and it was the pumpkin cheesecake ice cream!! Goodness!! So delicious! Definitely a great experience and we had outstanding service by our friend/ waitress, Came again during coronavirus era, and amazing!!
