We re-visited the restaurant recently for our 40th wedding anniversary, and I think it's only fitting to offer a view on what is best described as a bastion of excellence and gracious dining in Manchester village, Vermont. Situated in a refurbished former library building, the Silver Fork's setting, decor, and dining experience is indeed textbook flawless. Inside the upscale eatery evokes mid-century Moderne, a setting for the once popular Madmen TV period drama series; tony, chic, but hardly ostentatious and overbearing. On the contrary the high ceilings, lighting and space combine to offer that frozen glimpse of earlier elegance but alongside very contemporary culinary offerings. Table spacing accentuates a good use of space. We started with a "Rubies are Forever" Pomegranate cocktail with Pomegranate boba. The menu is large but not overbearing; a good mix of meats, legumes and fish. Equally the starters are enticing. French Onion soup is amazing but on this occasion we both chose the Duck egg roll with a special peanut sauce. Simply extraordinary and with generous duck portions. For an entree, my wife chose Mahi Mahi Fish, beautifully prepared over plantain. Despite being tempted by a brisket with horseradish sauce, the evening special, I chose the Ratatouille. Why? Prepared properly, this is often hard to find. The Chef's presentation of the southern French staple, was beautifully interpreted, accompanied with some goat cheese. We accompanied our meal with a glasses of red wine. For desert we shared the incomparable Caribbean Bread Pudding which is always a hit here. Allow to me to say our server Lynn showed a genuine experience both in the menu and wine list along with a pleasant disposition. We equally had the opportunity to chat with Melody the co-owner who, along with her husband Chef Mark, described their culinary Odyssey before coming to Vermont years ago to establish Silver Fork. When my wife and I went to the gazebo where the ceremony was to be held it was a rough site. As we sat in our room we watched as they decorate led the gazebo...with a table and a table cloth. About 30 minutes prior we were finally introduced to Jen and our Photographer Greg. The best thing i can say was Greg was truly an amazing photographer and did the best he could with our photos. He honestly made the day for us a lot better with his energy and his enthusiasm. After it all we decided to just cut our losses and go home even though we had paid for 2 nights. The 3 hour drive and staying in our own home sounded better. A few of our friends had dined here years ago and suggested it as the place to celebrate a friend's birthday. I called to make a reservation, and the person who answered simply said "yes" without asking for my name, phone number, or any details--already a red flag, though I didn't realize it at the time. Once we arrived, another major red flag became obvious: there was not a single Thai staff member to be seen. For a restaurant advertising itself as Thai cuisine, this immediately raised concerns about authenticity and quality. The interior is nicely decorated and clearly aiming for a "luxury" dining vibe. However, the shock came when we opened the menu. Chef's entrées were priced as high as $60 per dish, regular entrées ranged from $25-$34, and appetizers averaged around $19. Several of us--including myself--wanted to walk out immediately, but we stayed only out of respect for our friend's birthday. The food was nowhere near worth the price. I ordered a tuna tataki for $16.95, which consisted of just six thin slices of tuna on a tiny bed of vegetables. I also ordered a stir-fried vermicelli noodle dish with shrimp for $34--a small portion of noodles topped with four bland, unseasoned, un-marinated shrimp. My child ordered the "beef tiger cry" for $40, which came with extremely fatty, chewy beef that tasted like the cheapest cut imaginable, despite the menu claiming it was Angus beef (highly doubtful). Then came the final insult: the bill. The subtotal for 11 adults and 2 toddlers was over $600, before tax. On top of that, they added 10% tax and an automatic 22% gratuity, bringing the total to over $800. Every single person at the table was stunned. We felt completely taken advantage of. I have never--in my entire life--seen Thai food priced this outrageously, especially when the quality and flavor were so mediocre.
