I'm a frequent shopper at Big Island Delights, and being next to Restaurant Osaka, I've often considered giving it a try. One day, I finally decided to stop in for lunch solo after my shopping at Big Island Delights. The restaurant had plenty of seating, and I found a table spacious enough to set up my laptop and work materials so I could eat and get some work done as well. While there were many food options available, I found the prices to be on the higher side for dishes that were fairly standard. The food was decent, but nothing extraordinary. Best service and food. Japanese, Korean and American. The room is simple and comfortable for traditional Hilo style. Not too much decorations simple and clean. The aunties that work here have been here for a while and the young female server gives the kindest attentive service. Visiting, I had a couple hours before getting on a flight out so my sis suggests we stop at Restaurant Osaka. I admit it has been years since I last dined there. For this stop, I'm glad we stopped. My mom doesn't eat a whole meal so I offered to share a meal with her. She wanted to Tempura Teishoku combination so that's what was ordered. I was totally stunned at the size of the teishoku; large enough to make 2 whole meals by itself. My sis ordered the grilled pork chops which was also a huge meal consisting of 4 pieces of chop showered with grilled onions. It looked delicious and a small bite of the pork chop was absolutely delicious. What appeared to be more on the dry side was actually extremely moist. The have smaller meals for snacking and appetizers. They have a full bar liquor license and it appears many of the local golfers stop there for a meal after their round of golf to settle the challenges of their game, A great local restaurant with great food, full bar, friendly service, reasonably priced and is in close proximity to the Hilo International Airport, A definite must stop if you're in the Hilo Neck of the Woods. read more

We've been coming here for a long time. It's nothing fancy but the food is good. They are located right off the main road next t9 the tobacco shop. There a handful of parking stalls right out front. As some of the other reviews have stated, most of the time there is no one to acknowledge you up front. There is a sign that says seat yourself. If they are busy you may have to wait a few minutes for someone to acknowledge you, bring you water or bring you menus. They serve everything from tonkatsu, sukiyaki, chicken Katsu, meat jun and other local favorites. The food is very taste. I love their meat Jun and sukiyaki. My husband likes their tonkatsu. The prices are comparable to the amount they give. So if you want fast and fancy...this is probably not the place for you. Very solid Japanese restaurant located in Hilo. We got the Miso Butterfish, Beef Teriyaki and Tempura Combo, and the Mandoo Saimin. First of all I was astonished that the butterfish Plate came with 2 large pieces of butterfish. The fish was cooked to perfection and the taste was excellent. Their meals comes with miso soup, rice, cabbage, tsukemono, and potato salad. I also got the beef teriyaki and tempura combo. The teriyaki had a nice flavor and it wasn't too sweet. The combo came with two large pieces of shrimp, eggplant, sweet potato, and zucchini. The tempura was cooked well. Finally we had the mandoo saimin. There were 4 large pieces of steamed mandoo in the broth. It was flavored well. The soup was nice and noodles were cooked well. I liked that the dish had a lot of vegetables that weren't overcooked. First time my husband and I ate here. We waited for a booth because we had baby and wanted a little more privacy. The booth walls are very tall and you can't see anyone else unless you're right next to them. We ended up ordering the bulgogi plate and kalbi & teriyaki chicken ozen, which included namasu, gyoza, miso soup and salad. Both were delicious and cooked perfectly. Whenever we go to other comparable restaurants we usually have something burnt or slightly overlooked, but everything was tasty. Haven't been here in years.. decided to check it out. This is a resturant slash bar. They have a great selection of Japanese, Korean and American foods. My boyfriend got the Katsu Saimin. The broth tasted like tempura sauce.. which I like, but was too sweet, but he said tasted good when eaten with everything. I had the tonkatsu which came with Miso soup (yummy).. rice.. picked cabbage.. mac salad and cabbage salad. The tonkatsu was very flat.. not very meaty, but alright. In my opinion Restaurant Osaka is the best place to eat Japanese food in Hilo. They have a good selection on there menu for everyone in the family. I like to order the combination plate where you can have 2-3 choices from the menu. It comes with miso soup, rice, and mac or green salad. You can choose from Shrimp tempura, chicken katsu, miso butterfish, tonkatsu, teriyaki beef, bbq chicken, fresh fish, etc. I like to get the miso butterfish and teriyaki beef combo. They give a generous portion and the food taste really good. I sometimes opt to get the shrimp tempura on the combo plate, where the tempura is always cooked perfectly! Two pieces of shrimp, fish, eggplant, and carrot tempura. I think that they make the best beef teriyaki that I have ever had. The beef is tender and they have a teri sauce that compliments the beef. They also have Korean and American food on the menu. We always order a side of mandoo for an appetizer. You can order it by the piece. No need for reservations as they have ample seating, unless you have a large group. Parking is a private lot directly in front of the restaurant. The restaurant is located on Kanoelehua Ave near Big Island Toyota. They are open for lunch and dinner until 9 p.m. Good food, fair prices, with great service! read more

I'd hate to write such a review but the food is not good. It is of equal par of Mcdonalds, Cafe 100, and LnL BBQ, cheap food. Its simple and not fancy however the name may imply. I ordered a greasy meal to go and tried to enjoy it in my hotel room. And ended up with a sick stomach and 2hrs later it went into the toilet. I spend the rest of the night drinking tea and trying to rest and sooth my stomach from the bad food. read more

Restaurant Osaka ended up being our families favorite place to eat on our trip to Hilo. They have an interesting mix of both Japanese food and Korean food. First night we went, I got the Chicken fried rice with chicken katsu for I think like $10. It was really good and really filling, even a big boy like me had to ask for a take out container. The second night I had the Hot and Spicy Pork off the Korean menu. Again, a winner. My family enjoyed everything they tried and it seemed like everything was a winner here. The atmosphere is very pleasing and the staff was very nice and attentive. I believe they also had a bar in the back but I'm not to sure. Combination Plate. I had the Special Tempura & Kaleb Rib plate. It was served Teshoku style with pickled raw cabbage, potato salad, white rice in a small oriental rice bowl. The Tempura was 2 pieces of breaded panko shrimp deep fried. Vegetable Tempura included were a slice of carrot, kumbucha pumpkin slice & a sweet potato slice all covered in panko deep fried. The Tempura sauce for dipping came with these items. The Kalbi Ribs were about 3 long short ribs soaked in a sukiyaki type sauce & cooked like barbecue. The pieces were cut up per bone. Miso soup & hot tea were served with this special. If you love this combo you would like this special. My husband ordered the full Tempura shrimp & veggie combo. His plate had 4 shrimps with Vegetable Tempura. These items were also served with the pickled cabbage white rice, scoop of potato salad & miso soup. Hot tea included. My husband topped his meal off with their homemade "Green Tea" ice cream about 2 scoops in a small bowl. He loved it. The items are favorites. Mask are required until you are seated. Servers were masks. The tables were spaced for social distancing. Good service, great food. Always nice staff. No reservations required. We stopped in on a busy Friday night and all eateries were packed. We had drove past this place many times. This time we decided to check it out. Located not too far from Hilo Airport, on the corner of Mamalahoa Hwy and E. Lanikaula Street you'll find this quaint seat yourself family diner. Their menu packs a punch, from American, Japanese, Korean, and of the course da local favorites. They also have side room with a bar and more booths to accommodate the pau hana gang. After scouring the four page menu for some time, we both decided on order from the senior menu (55+). We chose the chicken katsu plate and the chicken katsu/fish plate. Both meals arrived very quickly and were accompanied by small dish containing a Japanese cabbage salad and a bowl of miso soup. The chicken katsu was the best I have ever eaten. It was crispy outside, yet very juicy and tender. You don't even need a knife to cut it. The senior portions were not as large as the items from the regular menu, but for $10.00 you can't go wrong. They were quite busy the night we went. They seem to have just one server, but she did well. Our soft-spoken server greeted us shortly after we were seated and was very prompt with taking our order and delivering our meals; as well as, checking in with us periodically from time to time. The prices have gone up quite a bit which is understandable during this time. However they must keep up the quality of the food because it has changed. This is something of a concern because of the prices. It wasn't busy and it seems like this is the problem. Hilo is very price conscious and they will definitely let you know asap. It is evident that the restaurant is slow because of this. The ambiance has never been a talking point.....it was always the food and its prices. I think at this point they have to make sure that the quality of the food can improve greatly in order to justify the higher prices. This is the only chance they have to survive. Lowering the prices at this point will not help them. Hopefully they will understand this quickly in order to avoid their demise because I would hate to see them close. read more

Coming from out of town, I came w my family. No acknowledgment walking in. Unfriendly. Felt unwelcome. Besides all that we took a vote as a family and decided that we still wanted to dine there because we were extremely hungry. We then waited to be served. After 10 mintues we flagged someone to help us. The employees just starred at eachother trying to figure out who was going to assist us. We then couldnt take it anymore and walked out. Unimpressed. Ended up going to GENKI SUSHI which was down the street, where customer service was great and the place was more lively. We've driven past this spot for years and really felt compelled to give it a try this evening. There aren't many options for variety here, especially when it comes to vegan food and I couldn't be happier to have discovered a wonderful new addition to our favorite spots to eat in Hilo. Our server was easily one of the best we've ever had; friendly, knowledgeable, accommodating and attentive. She asked the chef right away about ingredients for us in particular dishes and even brought out special additions to our meals from the chef (as we didn't get the Mac salad or slaw portion of one meal).
